Go Gardening to-do's for Dave

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Here are the unfinished to-do's and suggestiosn I gleaned from this thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/672584/

- IE7 users are reporting problems again.

- Check off more than one category, either through converting to tick marks rather than a pull-down list; or add a second pull-down list for a secondary category (Same list repeated for companies that may be a nursery AND a seasonal pumpkin patch, etc.)

- Being able to map just the companies within a particular category for a given area (all u-picks, for example) would be great.

- Limit the "search by ZIP" to a specified radius. (The GWD uses 150 miles)

- Ideally, allow the radius to be modified by the user (up or down)

- Within the search results, can you add a column for category, so we can see everything in a given area, but we could choose to re-sort by that column and group all garden centers, public gardens, etc. together? For example, searching on my ZIP code looks like this: http://davesgarden.com/local/advanced.php?zip=37128 - it would be nice to lump all nurseries together.

- Add a means of linking to a calendar of events that are held at the listed nurseries, arboretums, etc.

- Add another category. There's a question as to what to call it (Supplies, Garden (or Horticultural) Supplies, or Garden (or Horticultural) Products) I can take care of adding it, once I know what we should call it.

- On the input boxes, can you add a note above the telephone number to clarify only one phone number can be added? (A few entries have part of a second number - it gets truncated in the process.)

- Also on the input boxes, we should specify they should add PHYSICAL address, not mailing address. Added note: I just now realized that Happenstance was also referring to the fact that on the view of any entry, it says "Mailing Address" and it should read "Street Address" or "Location" or just "Address"

- Lastly on the input fields, please specify above the website and email links to leave blank if unknown or there isn't one. If they add "none", "n/a" or "?" our poor system shows there's a link.

If anyone has a specific to-do for this feature, please post it here.

General feedback or questions should go to this thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/672584/

Thank you very much for itemizing these for me. I'll get to work on them as soon as I'm in the LR code.

Terry,

I don't know if it's used outside of the industry, but within the industry, companies that offer items other than living plants are referred to as "Allied Trades" or Hard Goods suppliers.

I thought about "hard goods" - that one makes sense to me, but I hesitated to use it in case I was the odd-man-(figuratively ;o)-out

This is finished. It required a large re-architecture of that part of the system so I'm hoping I didn't introduce any bugs.

Dave -
I don't know if you want comments on these enhancements here or on the original thread. I just added "Christmas Tree Farms" on the tick marks for the pumpkin farm entry in Clayton, CA (can't link to it now for you as now the entire entry seems to have gone missing. Cleared my browser and it all went poof. :-)

Edit: actually the entry is still there http://davesgarden.com/local/view/595/ , but doesn't show up when searching the listings.

Sorry for the re-engineering hassles :-( But in the long run, I think it'll pay off to have this capability - thanks!!!!

Dave/Terry -

In adding comments to existing listings I noticed that the distinction between "public gardens" and "parks & arboreta" seems a little fuzzy. Some of the UC gardens are in one category and some are in the other. Any way to make it a little more consistant and/or clear where certain types of gardens should be entered?

Under "Type of entry", choose the type you want to search on. So, you can enter your zipcode, then select "Garden Centers" under "Type of Entry" and off you go.

I can no longer sort on the type of entry now that we allow multiple types per entry.

Let's nickname it "supplies" and give it the full name of "Garden Products and Supplies"

Parks vs. arboreta vs. gardens are going to be subjective calls; if you see one that should be changed or added to, let us know.

Maybe it's my warped thinking, but I tend to align parks and arboreta because they're areas where you'll find woody shrubs and trees and are often formally connected, too (e.g, Washington Park Arboretum) while a garden is an area set aside for non-woody plants; perennials, annuals, vegetables, herbs, etc.

I *will* concede that I may be alone in my thinking, though ;o)

Dave, I'm bummed that we won't be able to map by category within a given radius. In retrospect, I wish we had assessed the downside before asking you to proceed with allowing other multiple categories.

In my mind's eye, one of the coolest parts of this feature would be to pull up a ZIP code, see what's there (a list AND a map, for those of us who are visual) and then narrow it down to a particular category and map out a nursery center "crawl", or tour of nearby gardens, etc.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

(Sigh...I'm enamored by your abilities at the computer, Dave. You seem to be able to do anything. No need to respond. I'm just sayin'.....)

I'm pretty excited this morning about some work I finished. You can now specify a radius range for your zipcode, AND you can now enter non-zipcode locations.

Examples:

150 miles of me: http://davesgarden.com/go/advanced.php?zip_distance=150&zip=77807&state=xx&country=XX&type=gardencenters&search_text=&sorter=distance&submit=Search

Now, try 150 miles from me, but using the city instead of zipcode:
http://davesgarden.com/go/advanced.php?zip_distance=150&zip=Bryan%2C+TX&state=xx&country=XX&type=gardencenters&search_text=&sorter=distance&submit=Search

Now, some internationals!!

Toronto, Ontario:
http://davesgarden.com/go/advanced.php?zip_distance=250&zip=Toronto%2C+ON&state=xx&country=XX&type=&search_text=&sorter=distance&submit=Search

Nuremberg, Germany
http://davesgarden.com/go/advanced.php?zip_distance=250&zip=Nuremberg%2C+Germany&state=xx&country=XX&type=&search_text=&sorter=distance&submit=Search

Thailand:
http://davesgarden.com/go/advanced.php?zip_distance=250&zip=Thailand&state=xx&country=XX&type=&search_text=&sorter=distance&submit=Search

Yep, I'm excited. :)

You da man. (As always!) That is a GREAT improvement to let us broaden or narrow our search in a particular area

Now all we need is the map to go with it (ducking and running for cover.....)

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Dave, you boggle my mind !

The map is coming. :)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

chuckle.....I figured it was.

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

I'm lovin' it!

Mapping is in now.

Have IE users had trouble lately?

Dave -

The listing I had within 2 categories is now working fine.

The map is working.
Don't know if the map is supposed to show multiple red arrow thingies, if for example there is only one entry for a 50mile radius of 94534. Here are examples of 50m radius of 94534 where there is one "Pumpkin" listing and two "Christmas" listings within that range:
http://davesgarden.com/go/advanced.php?zip_distance=50&zip=94534&state=xx&country=XX&type=pumpkin&search_text=&sorter=company_name&submit=Search
http://davesgarden.com/go/advanced.php?zip_distance=50&zip=94534&state=xx&country=XX&type=christmastrees&search_text=&sorter=company_name&submit=Search

And I am using IE7

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

There's a typo in add a new resource for parks, etc.

If they have a events of events, please post the web address to it below: (Leave blank if none)

Probably should say calendar of events??

Burlingame, CA(Zone 9a)

Just used the map in Firefox and it works a treat! I love, love, love being able to locate Nurseries et al on DG. Dave (& Terry) - you probably get a bit sick of hearing the same thing over and over but you guys are the best and I really think you've outdone yourselves this time. Happy Holidays.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Dave, we're going to need to be able to move comments between entries to consolidate duplicate entries, such as these: http://davesgarden.com/go/advanced.php?zip_distance=150&zip=Enter+zipcode+or+location&state=xx&country=XX&type=&search_text=united+states+national&sorter=company_name&submit=Search

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Not a barn-burning issue, but adding categories is coming up as a 404 (not on this server) error.

The typo is fixed and the error 404 is fixed.

Moving comments will have to come later - it's a little more involved.

dave

(Maggie) Jacksonvill, FL(Zone 9a)

You guys rock! thanks everyone for this wonderful resource!

Maggie

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Thanks Dave! I bet I can get one of these kind folks to re-add their comment and I'll take care of this duplicate entry issue. Long-term, I can see it being a bit more pressing to be able to move comments, but for now the problems are hopefully isolated.

It won't be a big deal to make the "move a comment" feature... I just need 30 minutes of time to do it and that usually means M-F. :)

Yep, this place just keeps getting better and better. Thanks!

Terry and Dave:

I sent you an d-mail, but thought I better let you know here too. The 'Go Gardening Local' has not been refreshing on my screen since this afternoon. It happened after I added Hershey Gardens. I added lots of new information (in Maryland) for 'Pick Your Own Fruits & Veggies", "Farmers Markets", "Pumpkin Patches & Corn Mazes". Unless they didn't get recorded for some reason, there is a gap between 'Weston Gardens in Bloom' entered by 1_Lucky_Texan and 'Washington Park Arboretum' entered by tiffanya.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

I turned off my computer & then back on. It finally updated all the information. Sorry for the alert.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

The other thing you can do is do a Shift-Refresh (hold the shift key while clicking the refresh/reload button on your browser). This will force your computer to go look for the most recent version of the page, otherwise sometimes even if you think it's reloaded, it's still holding an old copy of the page.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

I was hitting F9 for refresh, but obviously the computer was not giving me the most recent version. I'll remember the 'Shift-Refresh' trick. Thanks ecrane3.

Comment management is now in place! You (Terry) can now edit comments, delete comments, and move them to other entries. It works identical to the GWD admin area.

dave

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Great - thanks Dave!

Cheerfully :)

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Dave, in the diary section there is the option to change the order of tabs. Is it possible to change the order of entries within a tab ? My wish would be to see todays first entry display above yesterdays (which is now the case), then todays second entry display above the first, third above second, ad infinitum. If it is doable now it is just one more of those computer things that confuse me.
Thank you
