I bought a cloth book to give as a Christmas gift. It is brand new but smells musty. Is there any way to get rid of the smell? Washing (total immersion) of the book is not recommended. Right now I have it outside in the sun to air out and get some 6% humidity. It's been out there a few hours and still smells the same.

Musty Cloth Book
Febreeze??
That's worth a try. I don't have any on hand but I can get some the next time I'm at the store.
How about sprinkling some baking soda on it? It absorbs odors too.
Put it in a plastic bag for a day or two with an unwrapped
bar of deodorant soap. Should do the trick.
Thank you for the suggestion. I don't have deodorant soap per se, but I have some soap that is fairly strong-smelling so I tried that. Today (after one day) the book smells like musty roses. By tomorrow it should be presentable.
Good, Kelli. It also works for old furniture with
musty drawers.
I have read that putting newspaper between the pages and then applying pressure by placing a heavy object on it for a few days will draw out some of the musty odor. You might also try wrapping it in newspaper and putting it into a plastic bag of kitty litter for a few days.
My concern would be that once the deoderant smell was gone the mustiness would return. I vote for febreeze I had a brand new baby sleeper that had been packed into a box and in the basement for 4 years. I febreezed it and it still smells great 2 months later
I have heard that you can put fabric softener sheets between the pages and close tightly in zip lock bag to elimate the odor. Have not tried that but sounded good.
I've heard the kitty litter works great.
