Amaryllis-Hippeastrums forum?

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

I posted a note in the Bulbs forum about possibly starting a forum on "the gardener's amaryllis" (the genus Hippeastrum) , but the interest doesn't seem to be there........

I'm cross-posting here in case there are other Amaryllids fans who think it might be worthwhile to have a Hippeastrums-focused forum but didn't see the other thread.

If you think this Bulbs forum offshoot would be an asset (or not), share your thoughts here. The "Hippi cult" may just be too small to support a separate forum, but we'll see.

After all, there's forums for Begonias, Brugmansias( *and* a Daturas forum), Coleus, Clematis, Dahlia, Daylilies,Gladiolus, Hosta, Heuchera, Hibiscus, Hoyas, Hydrangea, Iris, Morning Glories, Orchid Cacti, Peppers, Plumeria, Tomatoes, Violas and so on.

Don't take that the wrong way. I'm all for sub-groups. Just pointing out that there are a lot of them here that stand alone from main headings which might easily accommodate them, and once did.

What if when you clicked on "Bulbs" you went to a page that had subcategories to select from, one of them being "Hippeastrum-Amaryllis"? That way the main page wouldn't become cluttered and one could "cut to the chase" if need be.

If there isn't enough interest, nothing is lost, so it's all good whatever happens.

Thanks.

Robert.

I am one of those that would love to see more specialisation in Hippeastrum, a dedicated forum certainly would help that along in my opinion.

There seems to be a specialist grower or supplier for almost anything and their expertise is very much appreciated, but some plants seem to need to be set apart from others in order to focus more attention on them.

Perhaps a Hippeastrum Forum would bring in more specialist people, to the advantage of all. It is amazing just how much can be found out when people feel there is a special place to go to for their information.

I am waiting for the day I can find Hippeastrum species bulbs or seeds at a reasonable price. If people can share their knowledge, or seeds, or bulbs, then the increase of these would have the effect of not only lowering the prices but also ensure their wider distribution and appreciation.

Whether or not as raydio suggests all bulbs could or should be placed as a subcategory within Bulbs, nothing ventured nothing gained as they say! It has proven to be very popular to incorporate Fungi and Lichens with the Ferns forum, at the moment this is entirely satisfactory as it is as the traffic is not huge, but interesting.

Lately I am seeing many posts on the Bulbs forum which are able to sustain that forum for the forseeable future. Hippeastrums - Amaryllis tend to get a little lost, those who are interested in these would prefer to go straight to a dedicated forum rather than have to sift through everything else.

I would go as far to say that I think a Hippeastrum forum would be used more than many existing forums.

I vote a resounding YES!

Thanks to those that have supported this off-shoot from "Bulbs".

I hope that there are more "devotees" of amaryllis who see the benifit of a seperate forum.

But maybe there just arten't enough of us here at Dave's to make a go of it........

I enjoy sharing with and hearing from others at anytime of the year, even if the blooms I might see are months away, I'm still caring for the plant i front of me, and can benefit from hearing what other people have experienced in the "off season".

I agree with all that has been said. I would definitely follow a separate forum for Amaryllis since their management is so different from other bulbs.

I am all for a separate permanent categorie under bulbs. I wish all bulbs corms and rhizomes had a specific permanent place. They all are so different but not always needing discussion daily. In as such I don't think all bulbs need a forum on the home page but a separate mini forum under bulbs. I hope this makes sense. I love all bulbs, corms, and rhizomes. It is absolutely amazing that something so beautiful can be created in most cases below soil. I think the home page is long with everything I think I might want to see postings on. I am all for mini forums within the main forum. This seems to me doable like stickys. Just my two cents.

Riverland~

I like your idea and I think it could work. If there was a main listing on the homepage that had a drop-down list of sub-forums underneath, the homepage would not be so lengthy. Who wants to scroll down an ever-lenghthening page of forums?

Robert.

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

Maybe you could click the mainpage link to a forum and on that page you would find the sub-forums?

Or have collapsable menues, with an expand all button.

You know, like Windows Explorer?

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

Yeah, like that! :-)))

Count my support.

As I just posted in the bulb forum, I think a tropical-subtropical Amaryllid forum would be better than purely Hippeastrum...it could provide yearround interest rather than late fall-early winter which is the main season of Hippeastrums. The forum could cover Crinums, Eucharis, Hymenocallis, Sprekelia, etc. Many of these bulbs have more speacialized growing conidtions thna most typical temperate bulbs.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

The Hippeastrums alone in one catagory would be good--but the other Amaryllidaceae I would rather see remain with the bulbs. Its kind of obvious why there are so many entries right now. But I don't want to see the narcissi and Habranthus and Zephyranthes and Lycoris and Hymenocallis lost in that forum either. Amaryllidaceae is a big group with alot of species but Hippeastrums are only one of them. There are also a lot of Cape bulbs in this group.

Come on Knight's Star fans.........the Poppy People have a new forum...........

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

You never know, if there was a dedicated Hippeastrum forum someone from the Ascension Islands might join!

Wouldn't that be absolutely wonderful????

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

LOL!

Miracles and small worlds!

I agree with leaving the other Amaryllidaceae in the general bulb forum at this point. I grow all my Crinum and Hymenocallis in the garden, but most of my Hippeastrum are grown in pots and in the winter are brought into a protected area so that the blooms and bulbs are protected from heavy March winds and flooding rains. I do have a pot of Eucharis, but it has yet to bloom for me, so it is also protected. I don't have any Sprekelia, yet, and if I did, it would also be protected. I do have lots of Lycoris in the garden. The clumps of Lycoris foliage are beautiful this time of the year. I also have paperwhites blooming in the garden as we speak.

All that being said, I have more varieties of hippeastrum than most. I consider them very different than my other bulbs. I am trying to learn as much as possible, and I'm hybridizing them. My new ones are just now starting to bloom. The older ones will start blooming in March and April. After that point, I will be noting which crosses worked and which failed.

I would like to be able to share my findings, but I find that when I see the little star by the Bulbs, the new posts is about a bulb that will not grow well in my area. I would also like to see more images of specific hippeastrum varieties in the plant files. Right now, there are many names with no information and no pictures. Perhaps, if there was a separate forum, more people would post images. I know that I would.

I do hope that you will agree to have a separate forum for them.

Thanks!

Me too I vote yes since I am constantly needing advise.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

I vote in favor of a separate forum for Hipps/Amaryllis

I've been learning so much from several folks that are regulars in the Bulbs Forum - posting regularly about Hipps......I love(and grow) other bulbs as well....and enjoy reading about all of them - learning.....but a separate forum for Hipps,... would be a good thing...IMO.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I actually LOOKED for a separate forum for Amaryllis/Hippeastrum and was disappointed that there wasn't one. So yes, I would LOVE to see this!

If you look at the Bulbs forum right now, Amaryllis threads overwhelmingly dominate it.

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

I wish there was a forum for the year-round exchange of experience and information of a year-round bulbous flower.

Wish, I wish, I wish........

This sounds like a good idea. there are so few Southern bulbs and I am always disappointed when I click on something I yearn for only to find it only greows up north.

I vote for a separate Hippeastrum/Amaryllis forum as well. Even when we are not growing them, we can still look at photos of past blooms.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Yes! Yes!!

I would LOVE to see an Amaryllis only forum. There are so many new varieties, and species type Amaryllis are becoming more readily available. Please Dave...

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I just did a quick count and it seems that there has been more than 300 postings about Amaryllis since Feb 1.....bring on the new forum. I just ordered a couple from a small sale going on at Easy to grow bulbs. Amaryllis Grandeur at 8.95. I loved the picture, I hope I love the plant. http://www.easytogrowbulbs.com. Patti

Dave - Is anyone going to move the Amaryllis/Hippeastrum threads to the new forum? This has been done in the past with new forums which were split from an existing one.

Marilyn,

I'd be happy to move the threads if you or someone can point me to them.
