Critter thats a Beauty! Hmmm....Twist your arm for a leaf in my Nov bingo box??Please Please!! : )
YUMMY that is beautiful!!! My favorite in these three..
Nancy, I should be able to manage that, especially if you remind me, LOL. I'm sorry it's been too cold to get your and CJ's boxes out... both of you, keep looking for a break in the weather at your end... winter (or at least fall) just came quickly this year with those early frosts!
I actually found two 'Candy Cane' AVs in the First Class database. No photo of the registered one, but here's the description:
Candy Cane (2472) 10/20/1973 (V. Lorenzen) Double rose-pink star/red fantasy. Plain, pointed. Standard
The other one is an unregistered variety, but there is a photo of it... looks different from the photo that Janet found.
Candy Cane (Eyerdom) Single dark maroon/white ruffled edge. Standard
No need to apologize critter.Wow were you ever right in saying winter came early.I shipped some preserves I made to relatives just one state away in Kansas and they froze on the way there.I even double wrapped them.At least the jars didn't burst!! USPS must let all their packages sit out at night.LOL No don't worry about it..I am more than content to wait til spring and it will probably take poor cj that long to dig out of the 14 inches of snow they had already.
Ohhh I could just take a big ol' bite out of that candy cane it looks so yummy! : )
Is anyone else having this problem- when I clicked on Janet's links to the pictures (to enlarge them), different pictures showed up!! Very bizarre...
lol Sorry- was reading all the posts or typing when you posted, cedar...We've actually had a nice sunny day and melted a good part of it...we can see most of the street again at least. What day did you send those jars? I wonder if they'd still be any good. You'd think they would...
CJ It was the end of November when the lows were single digits already. My brother said they weren't frozen rock solid but I figure if it was cold enough to freeze jam I don't think av leaves would stand a chance at all.
lol Oh...I missed the point you were making that it was too cold to send leaves. Ditz moment here. Sorry. lol
But yes, it's been way too cold to send the leaves...I sure wouldn't want to risk it just yet. ; ) I noticed that there are still people selling plants on eBay and I'm thinking...it's been cold EVERYWHERE, not just here...I can't imagine anyone placing bids just yet.
What temp would others recommend as a minimum for sending plants in the mail...with or without the extra padding and such? lol...Maybe this deserves a new thread...I'll see if anyone has a quick answer, though.
I always shipped year round. One using Large Styrofoam cups, thick insulation and heat packs. I did this for years. Amy did a thread on my packing it was in sticky not there now ?? But with a search might be able to find it. But I shipped year round like this no problem.
Oh, Oh I want Candy Cane and Christmas Carol. They are so pretty. I have nine on my list so far. All of these are beautiful. I guess really I want them all. It is cold in Thomasvillle, but the days are nice. Suppose to be 26 on Friday. Just got back from a Transportation conference and have to catch up on all the news. Happy Bingo everyone. Elaine
Allison, your method of insulating and protecting the plantlets in styrofoam cups is one I've been using also, and it works really well. In fact, the leaf baggies I just sent to Janet were put into styrofoam cups (taped end to end) and then into a box with packing popcorn and other insulation material. But the question of minimum temps for shipping remains for those of us who do not use the heat packs. I've been figuring that if the low temperature on the sending end and on the receiving end (X days later) isn't at least above freezing, leaves are unlikely to make it, and I don't like sending AV plantlets unless low temps are in the 40's.
Sorry to go O/T from the Bingo game... all these pretty pictures have us thinking about packing trade boxes, LOL!
All the "snow" and "frost" and other wintry names of the AVs in this game are certainly appropriate... the weatherman was threatening us wih snow showers this weekend, but next week the high is supposed to be back up around 50. I think I'll wait a few days before putting in my last 100 or so bulbs.... or ordering mulch... :-)
Todays calls are posted.Do we have anyone getting close yet? : ) Good Luck!!
I still need 7. But, somebody should be getting pretty close .... I bet by the first of the week someone will call "Bingo"!
This has been fun .... I really enjoy seeing all the photo's of your beautiful AV's! I'm amazed at how many of these plants some of you have in your collections!
I don't think I could ever be as good at growing AV's as some of y'all ... but, I enjoy the few that I have. Some of the photo's that y'all post look almost like a painting! I haven't yet added to the 7 or 8 unnamed plants that I have ... but, one is finally blooming! And, I have some noid leaves that have taken root and are showing some baby plants ... so, I am having fun! I hope in the Spring to get a couple with those white edged or variegated leaves! I really love the look of some of those!
Lin

ooohhh, 'Snowberries' is stunning.... and I'm not just saying that because it was on my card!
I had two today..the most I have in one day! I think Christmas Glitter is yummy too!!!
All of these have been awesome. Snowberries is a must have. I have got to figure out where I am going to put them all. This is certainly ruining my "budget". Maybe we can get some of the leaves at the Ga roundup. Hint, hint. This is really a great way to see all the pretties.
When is the GA roundup?
:-)
Yessss! I got all three today! Keep em coming cedar!!!
Critter: I don't think the date has been set except Spring. We don't have a place but will probably be near Jonesboro. There is a thread but I don't know how to post it. I think it is under Georga Gardening. Sorry I can't tell you more. Elaine
Thanks, Elaine... I'll check GA gardening and will watch the RU forum for it also...
Gooooood morning, everyone! It's bright and sunny here today, but we got some major wind last night along with the year's first snow flurries. So I'm ready for more of those seasonal, wintry AV names! :-)
