Unknown pest

I'm sorry... I'm just completely at sea when it comes to MG crosses! It's fascinating, but.. I just don't have a clue. Hopefully somebody will come along with more insight to offer...

Actually, you might consider posting all of this on a new thread. We've strayed pretty far from the original topic, and we might get more input if we started again under a new subject line. :-)

Thanks, Critter. Am having some eye problems, so will let this one stay on the "back burner."

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that! *hugs* & wishes for a quick resolution of the problem...

Sorry to jump back but the insect that ate your mg seedling wouldnt be a woodlouse would it? I just checked my lupin seeds in the greenhouse and found they had chomped halfway through my little ones. Luckily other than lying down they seem ok.

Mike, glad you brought us back around to the original question -- sorry we got so far O/T!

Do you mean this critter, http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/151/? I wonder if that's the little bug we call a rolly polly, that curls itself up into a ball when it's disturbed... I have lots of them under the woodpile, but fortunately I don't think I've seen them around the basement seed starting area... and I think it's too dry for them up on the deck where my wintersown containers are.... *whew*

Is this the same as a pill bug or sow bug? I do have them around, but thought they fed on decaying matter rather than attacking living plants. Can anybody enlighten me?

Beth, that's what I thought too... but I don't know if our pill bug / sow bug / rolly polly is the same critter that Mike is talking about...

The one in the link looks the same as i would call a woodlouse. A pill bug is different to me.
Woodlice can curl up but are flater, also the can't curl up all the way.
A pill bug can curl up all the way and become little shiny balls.

As far as i know they eat the same. The link even mentions eating seedlings. I have never seen them do it just seen them and seedlings that have been half chomped! Always half chomped hardly ever fully chomped!

We get woodlice everywhere here i even get them in the house! I have no idea where from and how, they just appear, wondering across the carpet. Easy enough to kil but they come back quick as ever.

Hmmm, I think I've only seen the kind here that can curl up all the way... I'll have to poke at them all now, just to be sure! LOL

It's sure annoying when any varmint takes just enough of a nibble to kill a plant without actually eating it!

As a young boy i used to find them and flick them around for fun! ...... Now i'm a fully grown woman i don't do that kind of thing... lol

Its kind of annoying but some still survive so i'd rather this than complete death!

Mike
