Viewing Photographs

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I have a suggestion.

Currently, when viewing a photagraph from a thread, you click on the small photo in the post and it is enlarged on a new screen. The top half of the screen has the DG tabs, some white space, and title. The bottom half has the top half of the photo. To view the photo you have to scroll down.

Is it possible to change the format of the page to see the entire picture without having to scroll (or at least the majority depending on the size) when the new screen comes up? All the stuff at the top could be on the bottom or it could be left off the page.

I agree. This has been bothering me for quite some time. In addition, is there any way to change the system so that when you're looking at a picture you can go directly from there to the next or previous post (or picture)? Like having both "Next" and "Previous" buttons? Right now you look at the post, click on the picture, scroll down to look at it (and maybe read the post as well), click on your "back" button to exit the post, scroll down to the next post, click on the picture, scroll down to look at it (and maybe read the post as well), click on your "back" button to exit the post, etc., etc., etc.

If there were a "Next" button, all you would have to do when you're through looking at a picture would be to click on the button and be automatically taken to the next post. If there's a picture, you could automatically be taken to the picture and read the post from there. If you wanted to refer back to a previous photo, you could click on the "previous" button. This is especially helpful when someone posts several photos in a row, each one with descriptive info that's very helpful. Take a look at this thread for some great examples:

I really hope that, at the least, we can click on a picture and get the picture without having to scroll down all the time. The other items would be wonderful if they can be done! Thanks for your consideration.

Marilyn

Once you click on the picture you can 'Right click' your mouse on the photo then click 'View photo'.
Then you will view the photo only. Hope this helps

When I do as you say, I get a dropdown menu with several choices, none of which are "View Photo" and most of which I'm not allowed to use. The ones I can use are "Save Picture As...", "Copy," "Bookmark," and "Properties," none of which are at all useful here. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I'm sorry I may have not explained it correct.
You must first Click on the small photo in the thread. Once it's open with the text at the side then Right Click your mouse while the pointer is on the photo.. Then you should get the View Image.

No, you were perfectly clear both times, and I know I'm following your directions. However, I'm obviously not getting the same results you are. Perhaps you're using Firefox or Mozilla? I'm just using ye old Internet Explorer. Wish I could figure out why we aren't obtaining the same results.

Hey pekasky,

Thanks for the link to Happenstance's thread. It was great! I like your idea about continuing to the next post from the enlarged picture post.

I recently changed to the Opera browser. It is similar to Firefox, I think. My computer is too old to use Firefox. One of the best things about Opera is its mouse commands. To go back a page I hold down the right button and hit the left. I do it opposite to go forward. No more going up to the top left of the page to go backwards.

Sorry to get off topic. That guy that started this thread had a great idea, I wouldn't want to send this in another direction. : )

I agree with all the above posts but an interesting side note to pekaskys' comment. I have noticed that when you go back to the forum from the photo it counts as another "view" on that forum. Makes the forum look like it has had many "views" if it has many photos.

Marilyn that's a great idea. Hope Dave is reading! I generally take care of this by just opening each photo in a new tab (using Firefox for my browser) so then I just close each window as I read it resulting in the next window (which would be your 'next') Do you use firefox?

You're welcome, David. Thanks for the input on Opera.

What great eyes you have, podster! I never noticed that at all.

Thanks, BC! I could open each photo in a new tab too, but it's just as labor-intensive on the front end as doing it the way I do now. But it sounds like the back end (closing each tab as it's read) would be faster. As to browsers, I use whatever Yahoo! gives me, which is probably Internet Explorer. I keep telling myself I should check out the other browsers. I'm sure Dave and/or Terry are keeping track of this. I'll bet they're waiting for more input and thinking about how to make this work, just like they do with so many other problems. They're SOOOOO good, aren't they?

Firefox is da bomb, well, on most sites! Easy to download, you really should try it, eventually you get used to it. IE gets clunky for me and annoying. I never open it unless I have to.

I may have to see what happens when I download Firefox.

I was not going to post again since no one else was responding, but since I just got a response, even though it was not about the original post, I am going to add to my initial thought.

Think about when you click on a picture anywhere on the internet besides here at DG. If the picture can enlarge, it enlarges and you see the whole thing, not only the top half. It makes sense.

Maybe all the info above the enlarged pictures could be squashed small but still there?

I love the big photos and do not mind scrolling down. I notice I have a hard time seeing the details these days so the large ones really let me look. Maybe I need glasses. LOL

Kell,
I love the big photos, too. I would rather not have to scroll and have the whole picture or all that could fit displayed after enlarging.
