Spiders !!!!!!!!!!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Hiya ..

Here's the scoop ! About a month ago I bought new furniture, from a reputable dealer in the city.
Once the furniture was in the house we noticed small light brown spiders (I'm an arachnaphobic) would occasionally be scooting across the back cushions or down the arm of the loveseat. A couple cruised across the couch as well !!
Needless to say I was out and to a local hardware store to buy SOMETHING to see if I could get shed of these lil beggars!!
I bought a Vapona pest strip .. the kind that you hangup and magically it exudes some kinda fumes that is not detected by the human population of the house .. but GUARANTEED to make 'bugs' be gone !! Well .. it hasn't :-(

Our dilemma here is .. "Did the spiders appear WITH (in) the new furniture .. the furniture arrived wrapped in plastic and boxed .. OR .. were the spiders there BEFORE .. they would have been tougher to see on the old furniture as it was 'patterned' as opposed to a 'solid' colour.

We live in the country and the loveseat (the piece they seem to pop out of most) is in front of a window that has a slider screen in it along the bottom. We are thinking that mayhaps the spideys are getting in that way ? These ikky deals are in only ONE place .. the living room .. and I'm not talking MASSES of 'em .. just an occasional one. Far as I am concerned ONE is too many !!!

The living room also houses plants .. as well as a woodstove with wood in a container that sits close to the stove.

There you have it .. I'll repeat the fact that these spiders are very small .. light brown .. at one time I thought one was a TIC!!! But .. a tic does NOT run that fast ..

UGggggg .. now that I have set up another nightmare for myself .. I'll wait to see if any of you fine folks can suggest something. I am going to go out today and buy a can of bug spray. I intend to turn the couch and loveseat over and spray from the bottom .. Hmmmmmm .. wonder if they have any bugsprays that smell Christmassy !!!

Thanks in advance

Those spides would not be long in my house. If I were you I would take a vac to ALL the furniture, move all of it and vac around the room baseboards, turn the furniture upside down and vac there, take off the cushions off and vac there, also vac on the undersides of all your tables. They like to get up in the dark corners and deposit egg cases. Then I would throw the vac bag in the garbarde enclosed in another bag. Hope this helps some. LIZ

I am with LC because I too would have the vac out and going to town. I have a very bad case of spider hate. If it was me I would also take some raid to all the baseboards, the floor around and under the couch and if you don't think it would hurt the furniture it also. I tell all spiders outside in order to remain living you had better never darken my door or even think about coming inside because if you do you are toast.

I finally gave up trying to fight my spider infestation by myself, and I called an exterminator. I have a standing date with them every two months. That's how much I hate spiders.

The exterminator said, however, that Home Defense is one of the better commercial bug sprays. You might try that. I tried to do the vacuum thing, but mine broke!

My sympathies. There are a lot of phobias that I don't have, but I seem to make up for it by being an extreme arachnophobe.

Hi

First of all .. THANK YOU for your suggestions.

I did by a 'SPIDER SPRAY" for the house (living room) and as well .. I also bought Insecticidal soap for all my plants. THEN .. I cleaned all my windows .. inside and out .. found webs in either area .. I dusted .. I vacuumed .. and I basically wore myself to a frazzle !! ..
I finally decided that, if the sprays and cleaning did NOT work .. I will call an exterminator :-( altho .. that will be a last resort. The temps here are hitting about 10F at night .. and I am SO hoping that this is going to HELP me somewhat.

I am like the QUEEN of ARACHNAPHOBIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again .. thanks guys :-)

I can't stand to watch TV when there is a show about spiders. The hair on my arms stands up and I get the "willies" just thinking about them. Several yrs. ago we were in bed sound asleep (one of those rare nights when I do sleep). I had short curly hair then. In MY SLEEP I heard the found of eight feet on my pillow, felt something run across my hair and was out of bed yelling "spider" at the top of my lungs. My husband bounded out the other side of the bed wanting to know what was going on. I told him a spider had run across my pillow and my hair. We torn the bed apart looking for that thing. Found it, caught it in a glass and escorted it outside. Then had to check and recheck the bed before I would go back to bed. Never went to sleep again that night. Took another shower and washed my hair. To this day I can still "feel" that spider running across my hair. Even now the hair on my arms is standing up just writing about it. Ugh. LIZ

MarilynneS,
I would worry that your wood supply is the culprit. I see spiders in our wood pile always and when I put logs in the stove, I see them trying to escape. I feel so sorry for you people that have real fears of something so hard to avoid. I suffer from horror of June bugs, but the season for them is short and they are predictable and loud. They are easy for me to avoid. Patti

Hi again all :-)

OH PATTI !!! I am so THERE with you on the June Bugs .. I love the spring .. but when the end of May creeps into play I KNOW that those darned "KAMAKAZEE" June bugs are going to be flyin about and running SMACK into me as I troop from the garage to the house later in the night !! They sure do cause you a scare AND a darned dandy OWIE if they hit you hard enough .. not to forget the fact that IF you have long hair (like me) and they have knocked themselves out and fallen into your hair .. well .. a picture is worth a thousand words .. BUT .. no way am I gonna share it .. the 'hubby unit' caught me at my LEAST glamorous moment trying to get shed of the bug from my hair .. not unlike Liz and the spider!!

As the SPIDER situation stands now .. they seem to have decreased .. might annhilate one a day or LESS .. course .. we now have a blanket of snow in Northern Ontario AND the temps have gone down significantly. As well .. the wood is sitting OUTSIDE and coming in cold and I have noted nary ONE of the beasties appearing from it .. keeping my fingers crossed and my eyes peeled though .. AND the can of SPIDER BUSTER handy :-)

Have a good one guys :-)

Thanks again for the support ..
