gardenpom - Love your Eagle shot and of course ya know I just LOVE that little hummer of yours!
Eagles are such magnificent creatures aren't they? They really do represent the spirit of America, in my humble opinion. They are such freedom loving birds and so smart! Very cool that you actually got a photo of one! I see them from time to time in my area too. Always has me stopping right in my tracks when I spot one. You can't hardly keep your eyes off of them!
It always makes me sad to go to the Brevard Zoo and see them chained to a perch. Even knowing they will never fly again because of accidents which caused serious injuries to their wings. You can just look them in the eye and know how sad they are to be forever grounded. They were born to soar high in the sky with grace and such breath-taking beauty! It just breaks my heart when I see one in captivity. (Of course, I feel that way about a lot of creatures in zoos. They are "wild" animals that were born to be free.) It's a shame. Glad to see a photo of one flying free! Thanks for posting your awesome photo!
I wish I may, I wish I might,
go out and find a hummer tonight!
LOL!
I can dream, can't I!? LOL!
Need hummingbird info ....
Thanks Jax, I was amazed to see the Eagle, and so grateful the one shot I had time for turned out OK. Becky, you can dream about hummers at night, but you won't see one till morning!!!! Your time will come...if my little Hummer knew how many inviting plants you had he would pack his suitcase and head down the road....that's why I'm not telling him!
gardenpom - LOL! Surely he has a mother-in-law hummer he wants to send south far away from him! LOL Or a cousin or two!
Becky needs a watering can !
betterbloom - I need more than a fountain! I need a tiny map to tuck under their wings and a lit runway to direct them straight to my yard. Red lights, of course! With flashing arrows! LOL!
Some day my prince will come ..... errr.... hummer. Until then, I shall continue to fill up my yard with red nectar flowers! By then, I'll be able to host a "hood" of hummers moving in!
Did you happen to go to that site: hummingbirdsworld. It has a picture of the moth that looks like a hummer. Very good info there. If I remember right they have 16 different species of hummers on their ranch. I might have to take a drive and sit outside their ranch with binoculars & camera.
Believe me, betterbloom ....... I KNOW what the moth that mimics a hummer looks like! They fool me all the time. I get tons of them in my yard at dusk. I don't even get excited anymore. You watch, I'll get an actual hummer and think it's another moth! LOL!
My family did a realllllllllyyyyyy mean thing to me when they found out I was planting red nectar plants in my garden to attract hummers. No one in my family believes we get hummers in our area. Late one afternoon right at dusk, my daughter comes running into the house to find me and tells me to go out to the screened porch. She says that her and dad see a hummer feeding from one of my plants! She's all excited. Well, of course, I ran through the house like a crazy woman on fire!!! I get out to the porch and my husband is standing out there. The minute he sees me come flying out there, he bursts out laughing and my daughter who was running behind me is laughing hysterically. She just about wet her pants laughing so hard. So of course, I am now the brunt of jokes in our house. They are constantly teasing me about the hummers in our yard! Which is NOT FUNNY!!!! :-P~
I just ignore them now. Sort of like the boy who cried wolf. Grrrrr.....
Of course .... I fixed them...... I tied red ribbons and hung red plastic dixie cups all around the yard! They didn't know whether to laugh about it or be afraid of just how far I would go to prove that hummers do exist! LOL
That is so funny, the joke and the red cups! How far are you from Coconut Creek, they have a hummingbird ranch there ? Maybe you could at least visit them?
Sandy,, What a wonderful thing.. to keep those hummers warm... and maybe those slower Florida ones are enjoying their "retirement" years.. in that nice sunshine. Hugs, Elaine
"Pom" what a wonderful eagle picture.. thanks for sharing,, Elaine
Hi Elaine, Just hoped i saved a few...since the weather has warmed up, I havent noticed as many hummers "fighting" over the feeders...but the little lamp is ready to go again if we get another drop in temps like we did....there is a few of us in our townhouse complex that bought the lamps so we could keep the hummers going....
Sandy
Love those hardy little Annas you been hosting. Neat idea with the heat lamp too!
They are such sweet and curious little things. In Summer they came up to my face to look me in the eye. They shouldn't be scared of anything with the speed and multi-directional abilities.
Those HB Moths move much the same way, and like Becky I used to think they were Hummers, before I got a good look nd a nice blurry little picture, lol. Not near as good as what I hope to get one day though. I can be very tenatious when I set out to scout something or another. A sort of never say die attitude, lol. Or just plain crazy about flying critters maybe.
Speaking of... gardenpom, What an excellent eagle pic, blessed is a good word! I would love permission to use it in the bird section of my site I need to put together. I would add your copyright of course. Do you have a larger original jpeg? I'm planning time to get many pics in there from the last few months actually. Such a nice clear picture gardenpom!
Your hummer pictures are really cool too. Even with them blending in...it gives that firebush some real life! Those little guys are such characters too, very sharp! Enchanting!
What a delightful thread Becky!
I'd be glad to send you the pic, just d-mail me with your e-mail address. I feel blessed that I happened to look up and see the Eagle in the first place. And I could just see Becky going to that ranch and sitting outside WITH A NET!!!!!
Deb - I had posted a photo of the moth that mimics a hummer on another post, but I don't remember what post it was. So here is another photo of it! Not nearly as exciting as a hummer. ;-(
gardenpom - Oh yeah ...... I'd certainly have my little net with me at the Coconut Creek hummer ranch. I wonder if they "sell" hummers? LOL That town is located about 2 hours south of me. Do you know the name of the place? Butterfly World is down that way as well. Which I definitely want to visit! I might have to visit 2 places in one day!
Becky: The address is on the hyperlink I posted on 11-30 @8:01 It also lists other locations for hummingbird farms.

betterbloom - I can not find the hyperlink with the location of the hummingbird farm in Coconut Creek. I must be blind because I just don't see it. And yes! I DO wear glasses! LOL
BTW - Thanks for listing all the hummer websites. I have actually seen most of them as I googled like crazy when I first started planting red tubular flowering plants to attract the little birds. I've tried all the suggestions with the hopes that it will bring them to my yard. So far, not a one!
Don't worry becky, I 'm getting a map route ready for my hummers..ca to fl.
The hyperlink is www.waynesthisandthat.com
Scroll down to hummers, as there are other topics.
becky, I went back to the link and looked at the info: it is Tradewinds Park...You are in luck, they also have butterflies there.
betterbloom - The tradewinds Park IS Butterfly World! So it's all in the same place. This is the very place that I want to visit over Christmas Break. I heard about this place over the summer, but haven't had the time to drive down there! Gotta do it! The place looks so neat! :-)
What a day that will be to see them both..we want pics ! So if the red cups work let me know, I have yellow cups that bring you chickens.
LOL! You are TOO funny! LOL!
Very good pic gardenpom, especially the second one, so hard to catch the irresdescent colors.
Hi all : )
I had a hummer this summer, and up untill Oct. He/she had a favorite limb that he/she rested on. We would watch from the house with binoculars. He loved my Aloe when it bloomed.
I recently purchased a Firebush,.... could anyone tell me how big theirs is, so I can get a general idea of where to put it? Thanks
~Lucy
Thanks gardenpom, I have just the place for it. I have a fairly large stump (about 2ft by 21/2 ft) that is in the middle of my backyard, left over from hurricane Charlie. I don't see it being removed anytime in the near future, so I'll just camouflage it with the Firebush. : )
I noticed they have a dwarf version of Firebush on the market now....be sure you have the large size.
Hmmmmm, I didn't know that.
It's in a 5 gallon pot, and is pretty big right now. Hopefully it is the big one. : )
Blue, the hummers love my Firebush too, I have a standard and a dwarf. The standard gets to about 6' tall and dies back each winter. The dwarf only gets about 2' tall.
Love the hummer pics gardenpom.
Do the 2 look the same (except for size), or can you tell a difference with the leaves or flowers?
Mine looked the same except for their mature size. But, I can't imagine the dwarf in a 5 gal pot, that's seems too big. How tall is it?
Wow, that's amazing, yours must not die back in the winter?
On another thread TexasPuddyPrint, (I think) mentioned there's a butterfly cat that has the Firebush as its host, but I can't remember which cat. Have you noticed any cats on it? I'll try to find that thread.
fly_girl... I would say it's about 2 ft tall and about that wide.
WOW garden pom, that's a nice one. : )
Hard to say, it could just be a young standard which would be my guess. I have had seedlings come up around mine and been able to move them, you could always move it if it's the dwarf.
