Dear Dave, re. PF pictures forum

would it be possible to revert the order of the pages? i.e., the newest page getting the last/highest number and the oldest Nbr. 1?

If so, could you add a feature 'go to page xxx'?

This would allow us to go through all pages, a few at the time.

Ursula, if I understand correctly what you want to do, there is already a way you can do it. I think changing the order for the PF pictures forum would mess things up for people who watch it regularly and want to see the new things first--this is the way it works in all the other forums so I also think it would be confusing if that forum was different.

To do what I think you're wanting to do, scroll to the bottom of the page where it has links to next page, etc, you'll see numbered pages. If you click on the last number, it'll take you to the last (oldest) page, then from there you can navigate by using the link to "previous", rather than going through in the normal order starting on page 1 and hitting "next". I think that does what you want, but it leaves the forum in the normal order for others. I do like the idea of a go to page X button though!

Nope, LOL, you did not 'read' my mind, ecrane3 LOL.

I am not talking about the 'order of appearance'. That should stay just as it is.

The way the pages are currently numbered gives them a 'mobile' status, meaning they do not *keep* their numbers. The page that currently bears (just as example) Nbr 2635, will become Nbr 2637 in a matter of minutes/hours.

That is the only thing I suggest to revert: the numbering of the pages, not their display. This means, the first PF page will be Nbr 1 for good and every subsequent page will keep the number for ever (which is not occuring now).

I know how it works so far, because I have gone to the highest number and from there on forward, but there is no way I can kep a track of the pages I have already visited because of the changing numbers. See what I mean?

Also, a 'got to page xx' would speed up the process that has to be done manually so far.

I see what you're saying, I don't know what the page numbers are that you're referring to though, but as long as Dave does then it doesn't matter if I do or not! And since you weren't asking for what I thought you were, then no objections here!

Dear ecrane3, maybe you will understand if I tell you that I only own a computer for the last 3 years. Before that, I only was able to access DG occasionally from a cyber cafe.

Therefore, there are many PF Pictures Forum 'pages' I have not had the chance to visit. Sometimes, time allowing, I like to go back to the pictures that were posted before I started checking the PF Pictures Forum on an almost daily basis.

The way the 'pages' in such forum are numbered now, is always Page 1 for the last/newest additions. Since several 'pages' are added daily, there is no way for me to go back to the last page I visited because the numeration is permanently changing.

If the pages were numbered giving the oldest page the Nbr 1, and the newest page the last number, it would be possible for me/others to go back to a certain page and continue watching from there on. This would not alter the order of appearance, just give them a number the pages would keep 'permanently'.

Of course, if somebody added a comment to a picture originally posted on page 1, this would move the picture authomatically to the newest page but this does not happen that often as to loose track of the ones you have seen and the ones not.

I did not specifically ask for fellow DGs' input, but a different point of view is always welcome. Your enquiries probably will help Dave understand what I mean LOL.

Ursula, I know you didn't ask for input. But when I see someone suggesting something that I don't think I like, I'm going to post a response so that it's known that the change might make some people unhappy. Conversely, if someone posts an idea that I would like to see too, I'll post a response so that Dave sees there are others interested in the idea and maybe that makes it more likely that it gets done.

Your second explanation makes me think that you're asking for what I thought you were asking for in the first place. But if Dave can change the page numbers without changing the order in which someone like me who only looks at the newer posts would view things, and as long as when I click "next" it goes to the next newest page, etc just like all the other forums, then I could care less what the actual numbers are.

Dear ecrane3, I wished I had a better command of your language. By no means did I intend to tell you that I did not want your input. What I wanted to say is that although I did not specifically state it, any input is welcome. Otherwise, I would have sent Dave a private dmail and not open a thread!

And sure, mine is just a *suggestion*. If Dave/the Administration consider this is useful (not only for me), they will implement it. If they don't agree with me, they will have their reasons and I accept them.

No harm done! I was hoping that by raising my question early on, it would help so that there could be a solution that would let you do what you want while still letting others view that forum the way they always have. Now we'll have to wait and see what Dave is able to do!
