You have gorgeous Streps, Snowrose! Absolutely love your Spiritual Corridor! And the color of your Daniel is beautiful, Allison! I wish the plantlet of Cynthia that you sent me in the Bingo box would have survived; it is lovely.

Snow - I did. She was very kind and welcomed me and my son into her home, showed us all of her plants and her growing area. We both learned a lot and saw a lot of plants we had only seen previously on the internet.
Your streps are really pretty.

Snowrose: Thank you so much for the pic of 'Canterbury Surprise' .... that's the one little baby I bought from Rob's. They didn't have a photo on their website so I wasn't sure what it would look like!

Thanks everyone ! Love seeing all the pretty pictures ! Wish your Cynthia had made it Don .. she is a darling sorry. I grew many, many babies of her Streps are the easiest leaf to progate. I did give Jan " Jannich" Mom plant of Cynthia and Daniel. My Crystal Dawn is looking once again more Happy on our new sun porch ! Maybe she will bloom soon. I have still a few others. Maybe in the Spring I'll get a few as I enjoy progated Strep leaves so much !

"streps are the easiest leaves to propagate"

Hopefully my variegated one won't end up being tricksy.

Wow! That Bristol's Bluebird would be a great Christmas gift for Mom. I'll have to look around for that one. Blue is her favorite color and she would just freak out at that one. Allison, I also have "Daniel"; it was the first strep I bought. I think the flowers on these plants are just so beautiful - the color, the shape, everything! And for those who doubt their gardening abilities - if my mother can grow them, anyone can! I think it's because gesneriads don't care if she forgets to water them for a while, LOL. She has all of hers in the master bathroom. One wall is mostly glass block and there are two high windows so they get plenty of light and humidity.

OH! I have a new beauty that was a gift from Nannanavarro this afternoon! And it has a bud!! I will post a photo when it opens... such a gorgeously lined purple and white bloom, the tracing on it almost looks like netting... oh, I am not doing it justice! It was my favorite of all her blooming lovelies (she has them in the pretty window that we've come to know through her posts), and I'm pretty sure I squeaked out loud when she said it was the one she had plants of for us!

Can anybody explain the difference in streps and AV's as far as culture goes? My AV's look great, but my streps have yellow leaves and look lethargic. I only recently got some through the mail and they have not looked good from day one.

very very general strep v. AV notes:

- streps like to be in a lighter mix because they like it a bit drier (but AVs will survive longer with no water)
- streps like it a bit cooler (but most are fine at normal home temps)
- streps are more sensitive to fertilizer (use less)
- streps tend to like alkaline soil (not sure if AVs also do, or if streps are just pickier) so add a bit of lime or something to peat mixes

When the commonly grown hybrids have good root systems, they seem to grow pretty much like an AV. It's when they are stressed that these differences might be more important.

I don't grow them much, so I hope someone else has thoughts on the lethargy.....

My Bristols Sixth Scents opened today. It has only one single bloom. It is supposed to have a scent but doesn't really have any scent to it that I have noticed. Maybe my smeller is just off today. : )
