What won't you plant in your garden?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Hollyhocks,
Are wonderful flowers, beautiful to look at easy to grow and they do a great job hiding trash cans. My friend grows beautiful Hollyhocks and is always offering me seeds the problem is. When I was a child growing up in the city all the houses planted Hollyhocks and the end of the yard to screen off the area with the trash cans. I just can’t plant them in my yard no matter how beautiful the flower all I think of when I see them are trash cans.
Daylilies,
I have a friend who is the same way with Daylilies her Grandmother who lived out in the country planted Orange Daylilies around her Outhouse. This friend was visiting and said “Oh I see you planted Outhouse Lillies.”She won’t have Daylilies in her yard either. I think hers is even better than mine. Holly

On the banks of the , VA(Zone 7a)

Chysanthymums.

I hate the smell of them.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

I don't hold grudges against a plant. I just plant it, and if it
performs, it can stay. If it doesn't, and I'm in the mood - I'll
move it once or twice. After that, still no change, it is left to die helplessly.

Life is tough in my garden. Suck up, buck up and get with the
program or become compost.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I'm going to have to think. You would think I'd have a plant come to mind immediatly, but I'm drawing a blank. Good question tho!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Wuvie, I'm kinda like that in the fact that they either grow or they don't with out a lot of help from me. People think I know a lot about plants (which I really don't) because I have such great house plants but it's really a matter of the strongest survive. But I'm trying to learn. ;} Holly

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I'm going with Gooseneck Loosestrife for one!

Elderberry. Too many suckers coming up, away from the parent plant.

Perilla, beautiful but every seed reseeds.

Campanula rapinoids, just what it's name says. Rapid! (Spelling is wrong, but close enough.)

Blytheville, AR(Zone 7a)

I'm still trying to get rid of Gooseneck loosestrife and another one that is rampant at my place is variagated bishops weed. Thought I wanted both of them but they are eating up my yard. Sheverne

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I won't do any ground cover. How do you weed it?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hi Billy,

If groundcover is planted in mass, it typically chokes out the
weeds. If not, it isn't a very strong ground cover to me.

:-)

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Ah, I thought there had to be a reason for so many planting it.

Ingleside, TX(Zone 9a)

Mums, daisies, or pansies of any kind! Seems like so many folks down here have them..and I march to the beat of a different drum!I like to have things, whether it be plants, decor, or lighting, different from others.....I like it to be the "only ones on the block"!! I dont mind sharing though! When I do..I just go and try to find another "something different"!!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Turbosbabe, I hear you. I would have liked to had a couple of my neighbors plantings, but they were her idea. I just enjoyed them from my porch. I'll take ideas if they are out of sight in a back yard tho.

I too like having something unusual and sharing.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

ugh, I won't plant dwarf Mexican Petunias... They will take over a flowerbed!

Ingleside, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL!! billy..the backyard thing..now THAT is a great idea!!!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Thanks Turbosbabe! I have a neighbor who has everything I have wanted or thought about. We are so alike that way. Her backyard is enclosed, so I don't feel I'm upstaging her.

Ingleside, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL!! Once again..you are just too cool, billy! I have been on the prowl for some really unique containers...Have found a couple of good ideas on here..but would welcome any info on sites on the web yall may know of..Or for any kind of garden decor, for that matter..I wonder if I should start a new thread on my post??..hmmm..not sure..still sorta new to all this gardening!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Turbosbabe, Check out the Garden Art site. Lots of interesting ideas there. Holly

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Will never, EVER, plant any Petasites! Took me almost 3 days to "try" to dig up every last bit of plant, root or stem I could find and I'm sure I'll find some that I missed next spring :( I know there is a place for this plant in someone else's garden, just not in mine!

Another "never, EVER" again is Artemesia 'Oriental Limelight'. I was so taken with the attractive variegated foliage when I first bought it, then it started popping up everywhere! Five years later I still can't get rid of it!

Gooseneck Loosestrife is another villain, but I love the flowers so I finally found a spot where I can just let it go :)

Debbie

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Thanks Turbosbabe! I would say Garden Art too. Go ahead and make a thread there. You'll be suprised at the responses. I forget to water so I don't do containers.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Plastic or silk ones. I have seen it and it is well......... I will leave it to your imagination if you haven't.

Thornton, IL

lovesjesus - ROFL! A neighbor near my son's school has plastic flowers all along the house, very tacky.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Agapanthus. They are as common as grass here, but people still plant them.....

Thornton, IL

I won't plant asters, because I never will have to again in my lifetime, LOL.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I have pachy as a groundcover and get little weeds in it.

Spreaders like members of the mint family are not welcome at my house.

Thornton, IL

Do you water the pachysandra at all? I need something that will grow under my maple, in dry shade.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I water everything.LOL I have seen it in shade not watered - if it can compete with the trees for water it should make it.

forgot to add in nicotiana and maybe morning glories as relentless reseeders

Thornton, IL

Oh goodie, I love nicotiana, maybe I'll have more next year. LOL Did you know they attract aphids and then they stick to the plant, so they can't attack other, more valuable, plantings? I have some morning glory seeds, my DH loves them.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

you'll have plenty of nicotiana then he says. I do have reseeders I like - like cosmos and black eyed susans.

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

I soooo regret my gooseneck loosestrife even though in the country it was a beautiful, nodding filler that we all loved esp. my mom who is gardening in heaven now. I had the same thing with the Oriental Limelight Artemesia - 1st year it was 5 ft tall, now it's a huge clump and coming up everywhere and I can't get rid of it either. I even gave some away on freecycle.

I also have an oregano plant that is too big and deep to dig up - sad. It followed me from my childhood home but now it's just a nuisance that attracts too many bees. I need to hire some muscle to get it out.

I love cosmos and had a crop of beautiful double poppies but I forgot to spread the seeds and they died back... :(

Thornton, IL

I would love a really big clump of oregano, LOL. Does it have lots of blooms still?

Natural Bridge, VA

Purple fennel! Although the leaves are feathery and beautiful, they'll reseed all over the bed!

As far as vegetable gardening goes, I'll grow nothing that needs shucking!

toni

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Chameleon plant, can't remember how to spell the botanical, Houttuynia? I never did get it out of my beds, it spreads with a fury, even under sidewalks, etc.

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

It 's not blooming anymore - spring and summer... but if I can get someone to help me dig I'll send you a clump this summer.

Thornton, IL

Thanks! LMK.

Westchester, IL(Zone 5b)

Lotuses or Poppies. The insides of the flowers just creep me out. I dunno why, they just scare me, LOL! ;P

~Kristy

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Verbena bonariensis.....talk about INVASIVE !!! I've seen it growing out of the tops of Palm Trees here.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Kristy, Pod people.

(Zone 1)

NO more Thorny plants! I do have some Phoenix Robellini Palms and huge Asparagus Ferns that are Very Thorny ... but I've had it .... No more Thorny Plants are ever going in my garden!

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm so glad to hear someone else say that Poppies creep them out! LOL I thought it was just me.

I won't plant anything with runner roots, because the plants become more permanent than the foundation of your home. Previous gardeners who lived here had no problems with runner rooted plants...I've dealt with/am dealing with VA Creeper, Crown Vetch, Snow on the Mountain, Chameleon Plant, Creeping Buttercup and Trumpet Creeper plus a few others. Anything with any variation of the word "creep" in it's name just can't be good!!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Holy old threads batman!!!!

I'll play anyway.. :) Anything too fragrant as it makes my allergies go nuts.. Also NONONONO morning glorys!!! I hate them !!! I have every color you can imagine (ok so not really) and they all grow wild in my yard!!!

Nicole
