These are flowering plants that I have seen various butterflies on in my yard. I have seeds currently for the ones listed:

Yellow Four O'Clock
Yellow Flower Dwarf Poincina (large bush or small ornamental tree)
Scarlet Hibiscus
Purple Flowering Crepe Myrtle
Plumbago/Leadwort (which is also a host plant for the Cassius Blues)
Scarlet Milkweed (also host plant and I will have LOTS of seed soon!)

The two most POPULAR plants for nectar in my yard are (of which I have a small amount of seeds available at the moment - Should have more soon as the weather cools):
Yellow/orange flowering Lantana
Blue/purple flowering Porterweed (What I consider "Giant" version - but I have been told it is my garden soil and fertilizer that is making it so huge!)

Oh my Becky!
Goody!! I just got one of those plants at the last swap meet we had here.. I was wondering what it would look like when it grew up. :)
I should have known it would be a real good one! It is still sorta small now, but getting it's legs on.

What is the fertilizer do ya use Becky?
Deb

Here is the baby version, lol

Becky there are 2 porterweeds that look similar. One is called blue the other purple. One get 3 to 5' and the other about 3'. I forget which one does what lol

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Deb - I just use the 14-14-14 Osmocote. But everything in my garden loves it and so do my waterlilies. (I use it for my water garden as well.) All that I know is that it works better than anything else I have used over the past 2 years. ;-)

Donna - My porterweed can get well over 6' if I don't cut it back. Right now it is somewhere between 4 - 5 ft. tall. To me the flowers look purple. I have another one in my back yard and it does not appear to want to grow anywhere near the size of the one I have in the front yard. So .... makes me think they are two different types of porterweed. I'm not plant expert, but I have seeds from the larger one right now.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

My nectar seed list just got much better after a visit to a friends. She gave me a bunch of seeds to share with you all. All are fresh harvest from the 2006 growing season and available for SASBE 2 stamps or 3 if you want some of all of them as some are large heavier seed.

Giant Orange Cosmos-get 5 to 8' tall
Aristolochia fimbriata- Pipevine Swallowtail Host

Hardy Hibiscus- Burgundy 1 person

Surely so Donna, I couldn't find an exact match of the one I have, actually. The purple edge and lighter foliage..hum.

Deb

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, well .... what a surprise! I guess I need to pay more attention and look closer. First year ever that I have seen my cape honeysuckle produce seed pods! Looks like I will also have some seeds for those as well. The butterflies do like the flowers, but I planted them mainly for the hummers (that I hope to one day get in my yard! lol). Here's a photo of the seed pods.

Debnes, you got the Porterweed from me at the swap. It's "blue" and gets about 2-3' tall. I don't fertilize them at all and they bloom great and reseed on their own.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Alrighty Paige, I remembered and was going to ask you again which one it is.. thanks for catching it, ..I think I will really enjoy it. I love the color of the foliage! The Mist Flower is making lil buds too. :o) Cosmos are picking up steam too, one is a real pretty yellow..I love it!
I got a couple more PW from Mitch... they are greener, but I think they are Porterweed too (could it be the larger one like Becky's? Those are budding up to bloom now. Maybe y'all can tell.

Deb

Deb - The only way that I can tell is when it starts growing. If it gets really big - then it's the one I have in my front yard. If it stays smaller - then it's the one in my backyard. LOL! The smaller is more manageable - but the bigger one definitely attracts a lot more butterflies. In fact, I haven't seen many butterflies on the smaller one. But again, I just planted it a couple months ago and it is probably just getting established in my yard. Next Spring will determine how big it may get. My larger one has very large leaves as well. Bigger flowers, too. Which is probably why the bees and butterflies like it so much. I have also heard that hummers like it, too. (I wouldn't know about that.) But it is a monster porterweed! I'll post the picture again. It is bigger now than in the picture I took several weeks ago.

Great pic Becky thx! Once we get into this real well, we should be able to tell by looking at a flower if a hummer would like it....ya think? Bright colors(reds and purples), sticky nectar, small tubular blooms, etc..

Donna says Red Cigar Plant is one to get for hummers for sure and I plan to. If anyone has seed, or a line on it, let us know. I definatly want one or 2 seeds/plants,

Love that Porterweed

The hummers really went after my Bat Faced Cuphea, I'll try to get seeds.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Deb - I have a small cigar plant and the beetles are killing it. I have another gardener friend who is having the same problem with hers. So I don't think that is a plant that I am going to try to keep in my yard. Half the plant is already dead from the beetles eating it. It's not just one or two beetles either - it's an infestation of them! Little shiny dark blue beetles.

Fly-girl - I have a batface cuphea, too. But don't know what's going on with it. It was blooming like crazy when I got it and now it's just kind of stagnant. It's doing nothing. It's not dying but it's not blooming or growing. Perhaps it's going through transplant shock and will hopefully bounce back once it's established. I loved the little bat faces on the flowers. Adorable plant!!!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Becky, your PW is beautiful! A couple years ago I had a coral one and it got huge. Unfortunately it didn't reseed! This is crummy pic but you can see it. I'd love one of these again.

I don't know Deb, I didn't know Mitch had Porterweed. I've never heard anyone around here mention it. Is the pic you post what he gave you? I can't really tell much from the pic, but it doesn't look like Porterweed to me, it looks like a salvia.

...this thread has moved off-topic, again...

ps...and Deb, I think the color change in the PW is due to the colder weather. It's normally all green.

Well shoot, I forgot the pic after realizing we were off topic. Sorry, but I'm going to post it anyways. lol

Paige - Mine has never re-seeded itself either. (Though I do see what looks like seeds on the flowering whips.) It grows year round. I have to cut it back at least 3-4 times a year. It's trunk is about 3 inches thick right now. To me it is a large shrub. It's been there for 2 years now. It looks like a plant having a bad hair day! lol It does get crazy looking! My husband hates it because he likes "tidy" plants! He's annoyed that I have refused to cut it back this Fall! And to make him even more annoyed, it brushes him with the flowering whips as he walks up the walkway to the door! I told him that it's a plant that reaches out to touch someone literally! ;-D

I have seeds to share if anyone wants to try growing it from seed. The plant was really small when I first planted it. It got big quick with compost and fertilizer. I love it because nothing else in my garden even remotely looks similiar to it! I like crazy looking plants! This one fits the bill perfectly for me. The bonus was that the butterflies also love it like I do! (Though ... for a different reason! lol)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh yeah, Paige! That's it - only coral colored flowers. Did your hummers like it?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Paige - I agree with you. Deb's photo looks like a salvia.

If anyone wants a whip of seeds from my porterweed, just dmail me.

St Augustine, FL(Zone 9a)

Becky, I have batface cuphea and it is not flowering for me either. I think it is starting to consider flowering though (lol) because it didn't do anything all summer and now seems to be growing quickly. Maybe it doesn't like our heat.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Becky, I'm willing to try those seeds. Have you ever waited until one of the whips turns brown or do you always cut them back before then? I'm just wondering how long it takes since yours grows all season! My coral one had a huge trunk just like yours. I practically had to saw it down then I had to dig the roots up. It's definitely more like a shrub. The ones I have now are not like that.

I don't remember hummers using the coral PW. I only had a few this year and I can't say that they used it this year either. Hmmm..hadn't thought about that. They used the Salvia guaranitica (Black & Blue) constantly.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Paige - I collected about 7 whips today that are brown. When I ran my fingernail down one (actually going in the opposite direction of the whip) I could see what appears to be seeds throughout the whip. d-mail me.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Paige~
the Discussion thread is: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/667130/
and there we would be perfectly on topic with the discussion we got sidetracked with here.

Deb

Adding to my seed list> Redflower False Yucca, Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora)

I have quite a few seeds of this one if anyone wants to add a cactus..Hummers like them.

St Augustine, FL(Zone 9a)

I have the blue porterweed. It is about 2 ft. high now. I planted it about 6 months ago and think it won't get too much taller. I would be happy to share if someone could tell me where the seeds are and how and when to get them.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok Becky, you'll get d-mail. Brown seeds sounds good!

Karen, the whips eventually stop blooming and will turn brown and the seeds are in there. I broke off a piece from a plant in a butterfly exhibit at the San Antonio zoo once and I had to pick the seeds out of it. (I didn't even know what the plant was for a long time) I just left my one little plant to do it's thing and at some point it threw seeds out, but you will probably have to wait a while for some to turn brown. Mine have been blooming for quite a while and don't act like they are going to stop.

St Augustine, FL(Zone 9a)

Great! Mine are blooming like crazy now, but I will keep an eye out.

The nectar plants I have are:

lantana (yellow and also red/orange/yellow)
cuphea
salvia (leucantha, blue,coccinea, farinacea)
penta
Stoke's Aster
blue porterweed
buddlea
milkweed (all yellow and red/yellow
bulbinella (bulbine) the tiny blues and yellows love it
cassia
angelonia
plumbago

Will happily share if I can figure out how to get seeds. I have milkweed seed from the red/yellow.

St Augustine, FL(Zone 9a)

I was able to clip off the dried shoots of the porterweed if anyone wants some. I don't know how to get the seeds out, but will mail a couple of shoots.

I also have a few seeds of the cassis bicapsularis.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

I grew klondike cosmos this year and have seeds ready to share. This plant, I know, is attractive to butterflies. I planted it next to a fence. Good thing I did, it grow 10' tall and needed the fence to support it's branches. It bloomed late, after my hummers went south, so I don't know if hummers like it or not.
I also have gaillardia seeds ready to share. It's a short front of the border plant that if cut next to the roots, grows another plant. I have been collecting blooms and have recently found out what the seeds look like so I could seperate them. Both hummers and bf were seen on these in my garden.

Deborah

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Deborah do you have any of the yellow. I managed to save some of the orange seeds before the hurricane but not any of the yellow. Aren't they just fabulous. Mine usually get knocked down my Thunder storms but it is still nice and makes a nice long 4' high border when they do come down lol. All the branches grow straight up

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

I love them too. Mine were orange but the picture on the package was yellow. In fact, the package was supposed to be yellow coreopsis Tetra-Mix but they were actually orange Klondike cosmos. I don't know if the come true to seed or not. Love the way they attract butterflies.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Here's what the butterflies and hummers like at my house that I have seed for:
Marigold-durango-orange/red
Wild Aster-blue
Brn.-eyed Susan
Joe-Pye-Weed
Buddleia-dartmore
Chocolate-joe-pye-weed
Verbena bonarienses-one, more later
Butterfly bush-dartmore
Butterfly bush-yellow-not honey comb
Lantana-camera-one
White Columbine
Malva Sylvestris 'Zebrina'-z4-8
Blue mg-1? blooms-ivy leaf-the
Pink/Creamy Columbine/spur (wild I think)
Aster-Professor Kepling? (sp)-not sure if this is PK, can?t find the label.

I had one of the butterflies on a humming bird feeder a lot lol Don't know which one, it was a med. Brown one, everytime I got close to it, it would fly away.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Everybody!
The seeds I had promised are all out in the mail now, finally! (9 envelopes) I had a few hang ups with some seed I was expecting and decided to just send what I had. You may have to pardon my simple packing mechanisms, I was trying to save a few bucks. If there are any questions please dmail me. I kept my mailing list for sending out things I get a whole lot of, and I won't forget..it just might take a little while longer.

Now I need to ammend my list, and again when all my seeds come in. I will be ammending my Host Seed list too for the Host Thread.

Buddelija Alba (White Profussion)

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I up dated my list and added fresh harvested Aristolochia Gigantea and Trilobata seed. If anyone wants any please send SASBE or if you want to trade I still need lots of Zinnias, Cosmos except orange, Queen Annes Lace, and Sunflowers etc. for a big wildflower garden. In about a week I will post what hasn't been requested here on the seed swap forum

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Good Donna..I may want to take you up on it! I only have the 2 little Dutchman's pipe (Aristolochia) plants & might need more. I am getting some things you may like in terms of wildflowers. (..and I have a few WFs you listed). What kind of trilobata do you have, and does it host any cool cats?

Will be revising as soon as all my orders come.:-)

(Maggie) Jacksonvill, FL(Zone 9a)

DonnaB,

Where are the seeds on the Aristochlia? Mine bloomed, I looked in th elikely place but found nothing. are they big/small? I've also been trying to layer propagate my Aristochlias- no success so far and rooting cuttings did not work at all.

I've got PV Swallowtail cats even now and the adults in the area are laying still more eggs!

Thanks,

Maggie

Maggie, What method did you use for the cuttings? I think I will try something new I just found online for Passionvine. It's a vine, there's bound to be a way to make them root.. I haven't tried rooting the Aristochila but today I will put some in and see what happens.

Here's a link I am trying> http://www.instructables.com/id/EVH4LRHSK6EP285ZTC/

I have about a dozen Blue Crown PVs rooting here>

Deb it is Aristolochia Trilobata a Pipevine Swallowtail host. Maggie the seeds grow where the flowers where. I kept looking for them and never found them either on these 2, then when getting ready to take them in for winter since they are still in pots I found the pods yesterday. The gigantea was fairly big but the trilobata was long and skinny

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Put me down for a few of both Donna.. will send Sasbe.
