Parrotia Pruning Philosophy

Peoria, IL

Example #2 is from almost the same spot. It includes the little branch I was talking about.

I went down to the Seattle Arboretum today and looked at the Parrotia. They opened it up quite a bit.

And finally a shot from the southwest side of the plant where it receives a lot of sun. Clean whites, smooth silvers.

Sorry Ernie My page did not tell me you were down loading.

Malusman,

I think the difference between pictures #1, #2, and #3 are this: The housewife washing the bark in picture #1 is using Tide with bleach. The housewife washing the bark in picture #2 is using all tempa-Cheer. And the housewife washing the bark in picture #3 is using the bargain brand.

Scott,

Housewife? Surely you jest? ;-)

Sofer- don't sweat it.

Steve:

Scott must've visited.

Scott:

Is Ernie old enough to recall that of which you speak (like a true P&Ger)?

Ernie:

Yeah, when you get right up to it, that Pinus bungeana bark is just downright disgusting. Talk about not seeing the forest...I guess I'll never carry any of my specimens around at eye level on the bridge of my nose anymore.

Let's continue to e-argue that we really do agree, when a phone call might resolve it.

What I mean:

Less light = the aesthetic color of white or silver you desire doesn't appear (meaning, the bark stays whatever color it is that you don't like, such as browner or greener). I don't mean that the color is there, and that you just can't see it. I DO mean that the exfoliation is there, and your photo proves that. And your contrast between a less lit side and a more lit side confirms what I believe to be true as well, at least in your extensive sampling.

New Debate:

Rank mature bark differences/preferences among the following three (or other synonymous barks):

Parrotia persica

Cornus kousa

Cornus mas

Here's one.

VV,

I'm not old enough to remember whatever it is you are talking about. :-( Now that we agree to disagree about what we agree on .......... Appear is just too ambiguous of a word for me I guess. Point well taken. I'm not big on conflict anyway. I'll check in later about the best bark thing. Perhaps it could be new thread?

Regards,
Ernie
