New BINGO game starting soon!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

November starts tomorrow, and Allison's game ended today... it's time to start a new BINGO game!

Yeeeeee-haaah!

The prize for the winner will be a box of assorted AV leaves for postage. I'll do my best to take cuttings according to interests/preferences, and I'm sure the box will include at least 10 varieties. With the cold snaps we've been having, we'll have to keep an eye on the weather forecast at both ends and time shipping accordingly.

Lauri had so much fun holding cards last month that she has offered to do it again (filling in for Amy, who has been offline lately, so we hope she'll be back in touch soon) -- Thank you Lauri!! You can Dmail your card to her by clicking on this link to her garden site http://davesgarden.com/members/lauriwilson/ and then clicking on the "send Dmail" option.

I'm not going to be available over the weekend, so our official start time will be noon(ish) on
Monday, November 6.

(more details in next post)

How to play BINGO:

I will post a list of 35 African Violet names in the next post on this thread. You choose 15 names from the list, and those choices make up your "card." (It's not arranged like a "real" Bingo card, it's just a list of 15 AVs.)

You will Dmail your card to Lauri as soon as you've finalized your 15 picks. Do not post your card, just send it to Lauri. Click on this link for her garden site http://davesgarden.com/members/lauriwilson/ and then click on the "send Dmail" option. Please put "November Bingo" in the subject line for her. She will verify that she has received your card, but she is not responsible for catching errors, so please be sure you have picked 15 different names for your card.

Cards must be sent in by noon on Sunday, November 5.

Starting on Monday, November 6, I will "call" one or more names from the list each day by picking them at random and posting them at the top of the game thread. I will start a new thread for playing the game and post a link to it on this thread.

If all 15 names on your card are called by me, then you post "BINGO!" on the game thread. The first person who posts is the winner. I will try to send out secondary prizes if we have more than one winner on the same day.

All DG subscribers are welcome to play, however I will not ship plant materials outside the US due to customs regulations and border delays... my apologies to our Canadian members. Postage for the prize box will be $5, paid by the winner.

That is one beautiful violet there, Critter! What is it?

Canterbury, CT(Zone 6a)

And here I was :-( cause the Oct bingo was over LOL...
I am in and this time will pay better attention.
Thanks for doing this. Now I have a whole new list to look up and learn about.
:-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm glad to look this morning and find interested players already!

Mimi, no need to look them up unless you want to do so when you choose your card... As I post calls, I'll put the description for each one... and I chose the names for the list based on which ones I have photos of... I think it'll be a good, chatty sort of game!

Snowrose, I know that's a named variety, but it's a "lost tag" noid.... The original plant belonged to my MIL, who bought it at Carousel of Violets in Winston-Salem NC... she thought the tag "didn't look nice," so she threw it away. There are a couple of registered varieties that it could be, but I refer to it as "Felicia's Rose."

Edited to add that I think the AV in the first post is unlikely to be a "Buckeye" just because I've never seen that series in her collection... My current "looks like" guess for it is 'Ness' Candy Pink'.

Oh darn! It's such a beauty anyway and I do like your chosen name "Felicia's Rose" very much.

Huh...I do have a leaf or two down of Ness Candy Pink that I've just received lately. Later on down the road, we will have to compare them and see if they are a match. It will be many moons before mine have grown enough to see.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Count me in!

I know we've gone O/T with this ID thread, but here's a photo of 'Ness' Candy Pink' from FC:

and here's the alternate photo from FC.

I think the foliage looks very similar to mine, and there aren't that many descriptions with pink variegated leaves & pink blooms that don't have double blooms, fantasy markings, etc.

Welcome, Elaine! Please edit your post (click the green "edit" below your name to the left of your post) to remove your list of Bingo picks... Part of the idea with having Lauri hold the cards is so that I don't know what anybody's list looks like. :-)

I'm glad there's a good bit of interest and even some new players this time! I was fretting last week in a Dmail to Amy, concerned that this game's leaf box prize (I stop sending plantlets once the weather turns cold) wouldn't seem like much after our last game, but she set me straight. She's right... I think half the fun of playing Bingo is in the daily chatter on the game thread, and I'm looking forward to posting photos and descriptions etc... and, as she said, "who doesn't love to get a box of leaves?" :-)

If anyone is curious about the possibilities for the prize, take a look at my post on the "haves" thread, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/581728/. Not everything on the list is big enough to donate a leaf or two, but many of them are, including most of the Bingo choices, so the winner should have a fairly good selection of varieties to choose from!

Here's a "leaf babies" photo, just to get us all dreaming about winter AV babies...

Red Oak, NC(Zone 7b)

I'm playing too, just have to do the card. Thanks critter and lauri!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Your babies are just too sweet! Isn't nature amazing!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I am going to beg off as I will be out of town for a couple of weeks- going to spend Thanksgiving w/ my mom.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Good news! I heard from Amy, and she is OK. She and the kids all got sick, and it sounds like she got hit really hard with it over the weekend. She says she is doing a little better now. I hope she'll continue to rest up and recover this week! She apologized for "messing up the game" by not holding cards, and I told her she did no such thing. I hope she'll feel well enough by the weekend to get a card in and play with us!

April, that sounds like a lovely plan. I hope you and your mom have a wonderful visit together!

For anyone who's planning to be away for Thanksgiving, I figure we'll be through before then since it's 2 1/2 weeks away from our start date.

(Zone 1)

Hey Everyone:

I'm new here at DG, but love AV's and would love to play "Bingo"

Will d-mail my card to Lauri and hope I'm not too late to get in on the fun!

Lin

p.s. Critter: That's a Beautiful Violet! I saw a photo somewhere on the DG site of an AV that, to me, looks similar ... if I remember
it was called 'Wranglers Pink Patches'. It was really beautiful!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Welcome, Lin! You're not too late at all... everybody has the rest of the week to get cards in! Good luck!

You know, I did consider 'Wrangler's Pink Patches' for an ID, and the foliage sure looks similar, but the description says WPP has double blooms... I don't think I'd call the blooms on mine even semi-double. But that gives me another "looks like" to add to its description the next time I propagate it and share it around!

:-)

Thanks Critter, I had never edited anything and it took a couple of tries. Looking forward to the game.

Whoo hoo!! I'm in! ; )

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

It does take a while to learn all the ins & outs of posting. I appreciate your taking care of it, Kami! This way, when you're the first to yell "BINGO" nobody will wonder if my calls were really random, LOL.

Looks like we'll have a good list of players for this game... Get your cards in!

:-)

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

O.K. people wake the neighbors, call all people who may or may not need AV's and get me some cards................LOL I only have 15 so far.........................Lauri who is waitng...open open open....LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Woofie!! You've been very much in my thoughts & prayers lately, and I'm glad you're getting settled into your new home. :-)

Kay, if you win I will be sending you leaves, along with all the helpful advice you can stand! LOL, but seriously, with all the folks on this forum that are doing some propagating, I'm sure we'll be able to help you find a method that will work for you!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Kay, If I can start leaves then anybody can...just follow the directions given and you will have success....LOL I did and went overboard........................Lauri
