Ginkgo

Ah, look at its robust youthfulness. Gorgeous plant and good pictures, Scott.

I think it is just a seedling because she is a girl. A stinky, smelly girl. As for age, good question. The house was built in 1890. A swimming pool nearby was built in 1965. A walnut we had removed last year was 80 or 90 years old. So I'm guessing anywhere from 80 to 45 years old, leaning more towards the 80.

I don't know if you can see it really well from that second picture or not, but the twin leaders have almost exact branching patterns. For every branch on one side, there is almost always a similar branch on the other.

That is the unique beauty to the mature ginkgo. Strong laterals with a strong upright. Unique. It is interesting how the twin leaders got the same amount of hormone to create the exact opposite on each side.

very interesting. until DG in the last two weeks, I had no idea how popular ginkgo is, and why.

sallyg:

Take a peep at the Ginkgo Day in Louisville thread for more ways this tree is used (if you haven't already).
