the bulbs begin to roll in...

Gee, I give up LOL:-)

Lindenhurst, NY

They look like the monster bulbs I just got in from Buggy Crazy. Aren't they amazing.

Am I right? I think I am :-)

by the way, anyone know if I can keep the bulbs in the plastic bags they came in for 1-2 wks? They are in my detached garage right now in the bags they came in.

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

I kept mine that way in the fridge for 2+ weeks and everything grew this year.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I've kept mine fridged for much longer than 1-2 weeks. But any longer than that you'd want them in peat rather than wood shavings.

Since we're playing show-and-tell ~ I got my superbum from B&D. Placed my order at the time they started taking names, so said I'd take the private harvest or exhibition size, whichever was available. I know species bulbs are quite small so I'm not sure what they are since there are 2. (paid private harvest price)
Are these small larges, large mediums....?? (lol)

Here they're shown with an oriental one the right and a 1 cup measure ~ :)

Heh, heh, you are right maureenpm00 ...Buggycrazy.....I have seen the pics before but it was still a shock to actually SEE these. I hope they settle in ok and aren't too 'over the hill.' I am going to have to dig some deeper holes!
The wood shavings are a bit wetter than I like, I won't be able to plant before Friday and so I may change them out for peat if I can make it out to the shed.

Wow Moby, those are marvelous looking superbums...I am waiting for some B&D lilies too...don't know when they are sending...hopefully soon!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I figured they were from Buggycrazy when I saw those brutes. You might need some dynamite to get those holes deep enough.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Here is my Superbum, exhibition size harvest special. I bought 1 , they sent 2. Not sure if they thought they were small.

Overall, having received a Buggy Crazy order, A Lily Garden order and now B & D Lilies order, Buggy Crazy has been the most impressive. They are all wonderful, but Lisa and her harvest take the cake, as they say.

These images are all B & D bulbs. I planted Buggy's too fast (pure excitement) to get photos, but lucky for you all :0), I ordered more and will post those in a couple days, when they arrive.

Look great. Are you letting the dollies play with the bulbs??

Lindenhurst, NY

ESw - So far I've seen the biggest from Buggy, then B&D, and from what The lily garden sent me last year, they are going to be the smallest bulbs.

Moby, you are so funny. I caught the dolls too, hysterical.

Mag, your bulbs look great. Now maybe you and the others can help me with a situation I have. I ordered superbum from B&D too - private harvest size (24.00) and I was not impressed with what they sent me. If I had known it was going to be what it is, I never would have ordered it for that price. Was yours considered exhibition size or private harvest size? And what price did you pay? Mine is 2 bulbs attached. Like yours but connected. I took pics so I can ask you experienced bulb growers if this is the size I should have gotten for the price. Maybe it is, but I'm not impressed at all and was thinking about returning that bulb.

Here is my superbum that I paid 24.00 for. For size comparison, I placed it on a papertowel.

What do you all think, is this "private harvest" size? What is regular size of this bulb?

Thanks
Maureen

Maureen-measure yours at the greatest area of circumference. Then I'll tell you. Mine were exhibition size for 14+. I went cheap. Are these bulbs normally smaller, like martagons? I have to plead ignorant. But I will measure mine.
The dolls? Oh yeah, Polly Pockets help me plant my bulbs. LOL! Actually those exhibited in the above photos, if you look closely, my 5 year old just gave them each a "haircut", along with herself. Not bad , luckily. Her Bitty Baby Twin suffered too. Between the kitten photos and the hairdos, does this give you some insight into my life?? Lol!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Okay....the largest bulb at the greatest circumference is exactly 8 1/2 inches around.
I've always been happy with their bulbs. But with Buggy's coming first, I felt a little let down. Some of the newer OTs were quite a bit smaller, like Porcelein Doll, for example. Hopefully flowering size though. I do think some bulbs are naturally not as large though, or so it appears.
How doesw Buggy Crazy do it with those large bulbs? Some growth stimulant. Incredible Hulk Innoculent? LOL. She obviously does something different.

Lindenhurst, NY

Mag, your hysterical. The polly pocket dolls are so funny and the haircuts are so funny too. yes, it gives plenty of insight into your life:-) But have I missed something with the kitten? You have dolls, I have skateboards...as I went to sit on the chair to type this, I almost sat on a mini skateboard. Now it's in my lap. I love kids.

I'm going to measure....brb

The circumfrence around the widest part of each bulb is 7"

What do you all think?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Can someone chime in to these Superbums and their ususl size? Pretty please??
ps. I posted these kittens in the The Dawning of... Part 2... 5 week old kittens that we found in the pumpkin patch, so much for the GREAT PUMPKIN, Charlie Brown.

Two of them we have found homes for so far, I'm hoping two more...any takers?????

Lindenhurst, NY

I must not let my son see that pic or you will not only have only 1 left, but you will have visitors from New York:-) They are absolutely adorable. OMG - the one with the little tongue sticking out is just adorable. My dog Lucky would love to have another cat to harrass.

Thanks for the pic. Now I have some real insight into your life. Kitties and dollies:-)

They're all darling! I'd love to take that little gray puff on the right but we already have one rotten little kitty.

But then again.... the one with the spot on her nose looks like a sweetie.

I think the difference is that she doesn't dig them every year. She digs as they are sold. On the other hand the Lily Garden, for example, has a mechanical digger that goes through all the rows and lifts all the bulbs every year. We all know that lily bulbs are set back a bit when they are transplanted. When B & D comes up with their exhibition size bulbs they most likely are ones that were allowed to remain undug for more than one year.

Looks like buggy's lilies did quite well without water all summer. And I can verify that we had NO rain from about mid-June to well, we still haven't had much appreciable rain other than a few sprinkles that haven't wet my garden soil more than a quarter of an inch or so down. What I do see different about buggy's lilies (esw's first post) is the lack of the usual juicy root systems we are used to with her lilies. I noticed some lilies that I dug are similar as I watered very little over the summer, and not deep at that. It just goes to show how drought tolerant many lilies can be.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

The one with the spot on her nose is available. As is the one with the "splotch" on her nose. They are really nice kitties, but I have been up all hours the last two weeks feeding them at night. There mother is a feral that needs to be "caught, fixed and released" These kittens have been handled early on and are great with people. Come on over Maureen, one look and you will melt. My favorite two (love them all though) are the grey one and the Splotch nose one. Sweetest and Smartest, both females (of course:0) )
Oh yes...I love getting these bulbs. My mailman just laughs and says, "more planting today, huh?"

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

I wish it would warm up so I could plant. As it is, it's 36 degrees here today. I may end up potting everything up and putting the out on my unheated sun porch for the winter....

I wish I could take one of your furry babies, but alas, my three furry babies might object a bit... :)

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I can't take one either, as I am maxed out on 3 furry friends as well.
I'm holding off on planting, as I have a guest here (not the kittens, but that too). Buggy order #2 should come tomorrow, then perhaps I'll get it all done at once.....wishful thinking....

Lindenhurst, NY

Mag - what else have you ordered. ?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Got my first order last week & the bulbs were so impressive that I placed another order. Shouldn't have, but this lily frenzy I had before joining Dave's has only worsened with these threads!
SILK RUFFLES
BLOODSHED
ORANGE CRUSH
SPINK
L. henryi citrinum, FLARED YELLOW HENRY
EL DORADO
LAMB'S BLOOD
AWESOME, AURELIAN LILY

Some of these were added after I placed my first order. Then the bulbs arrived...I just couldn't help myself. So much for grounding myself :0) Better luck next time.
Ticker...it is freezing here too. Ugh.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Hey, we're up to a balmy 41 with a bit of sun!! It's supposed to be rainy and snowy this weekend... :(

Diann

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

A whopping 52° here!

Lindenhurst, NY

Magnolia, I'll have to look them up later. I also got eldorado.

I also got my Lily Garden order in. Some are very large, others are small. But the quality looks good. Silk Road is HUGE, yipppeee...

It's balmy and went up to 70 deg today. Lovely warm weather!!! Still cuttings vases of roses from the garden.

Well it won't be 70 for long...
Have a good night all
Maureen

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Only 60 today, Maureen, and rain so no planting for me.

I could go out and cut a vase of rose (no plurals here!).

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I ordered from a place called Bulb Crate and her bulbs came the same day as Buggy Crazy's order #2. Shocking comparison!

Same variety? I'm guessing the huge bulb is from Buggy Crazy - right?

May I ask the cost of each one?

I can't imagine Buggy's bulbs regular root systems on these bulbs with a year that has rain. She does a great job.

The variety there is an OT called Anastasia, from Bulb Crate. Silk Ruffles on the right, from you guessed it, Buggy Crazy.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I tried Googling for Buggy Crazy and found references but no direct link. Then tried Garden Watchdog.

Does anyone have a link to the site? Thanks.

Oh yes, the cost of 3 Anastasia Bulbs $40
The post of Oriental Slik Ruffles $8
Bloodshed $7

Thanks for the link!

"There are no products to list in this category". Sure, we know who bought the entire supply now! :-)

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

pirl....actually there are some products, you just can't link from the front page by clicking on the lily bulb section. click on one of the small windows showing a lily....when you get to the specific page, you can get back to the more general pages for the lily types....go figure.
try this link:

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

interesting to see the difference in size of the lily bulbs....it will be interesting to see if it really makes that much difference. Most ofthe lilies I have planted in the past have been the medium sized...most have put up a single or sometimes 2 stems.
the few martagon/hybrid and other species lilies were quite a bit smaller.
I really don't know that the bigger bulbs will really put out that much more (they sure will require a LOT more digging to get them to depth!) and I worry they will be a bit more unforgiving in the transplantation? Does anyone know?
