Finally, buds on my three year old pubicalyx, and my two year old macgillivrayi. It looks like SF's recent warm spell has really perked up some of the formerly non-productive Hoyas. Look for photos in November!
October blooms
Nice flowas Ann! and as usual great photo. -joanne
Hey Becky those flowers are awesome, it really does pay to keep them under lights in the winter.
Ann your nummularoides is really cute, mine should open any day, the stems are just packed. I am really excited this is the first time this plant has ever bloomed for me. I forgive you for the cat hairs on your plant, if you forgive me for the labrador hairs comming in on your clips.... LOL She had to help me count them out.
I just found tiny peduncles on one of the DL cuttings! The H. Odorata - is this normal, roots, but not planted in soil yet? Will it drop the buds if I plant it now?
I am stunned at the speed the plants and cuttings have been growing since I set up the plant rack - even ones I wasn't too happy with - I water about every 2-3 days, give 'em a good spray twice a day at least and they are truly rewarding me with growth!
Tami - too funny with doggie hair, mine will go nuts! :) They are great helpers are they not!?
Tee Hee ... I think of pet hair as an additional form of plant food.
Well if you can justify pet hair as a plant food, I think dust must me fabulous for my plants ;~)
dust would have to be the 5th most important plant food ...
Beautiful ! Christina. it must make up for the smell.
Christina - your pictures continue to be amazing! Karen
I love your H. fungii Christina, I have been checking mine daily to see if there are any signs of life. Nothing, zippo, nada. I thought perhaps after it vacationed outside this summer it would try to bloom for me. I'm running out of patience with this one. It has to be getting enough sun, as H. australis, nummularoides, H. sp. Sulawesi and H. brevialata are all blooming or getting ready to. What am I doing wrong? Just me pouting.....
Christiana, those blooms are glorious!!!!
Tami, I am pouting right along with you - especially when it comes to my big plants like fungii, sp. Sulawesi, cummingiana, and the pubicalyx's (on, and my lonely orchid too).
Boo & hiss,
Ann
Interesting how on that fungii cluster some of the flowers are 4 point and some are 5. Is this a common trait among hoyas?
dmichael
Ann, I couldn't help thinking how enhanced your Nummularoides flower was with the red background. I suppose you could do the same with other coloured flowers to enhance them too. Yellow/orange brown background, Mauve, purple background etc.
Roy
Roy, I do try to think about how the background would enhance the bloom colors. I am thinking about going to the art & craft store and getting a variety of colored posterboards, so that when I do closeups I can have some different backgrounds to choose from that might work to make the blooms stand out even more. I have mostly been using a raspberry-red bedsheet since most of the hoya blooms have some color that the raspberry compliments. However, I need to find an alternative to it since my davidcummingii is about to bloom and the bedsheet color will overpower, rather than contrast, that bloom color - perhaps a minty-green might work.
Ann
very pretty. Waht does it smell like?
Dawn - to me, she smells like really expensive perfumed soap or lotion. It's not over- powering, very pleasing! BTW, I'm jealous of your picture - very nice! I'm infamous for blurry pictures (really need a new camera, but DH refuses to get another "just for pictures of hoyas - can you imagaine??!!) Karen
I know, I am not allowed to download anymore pics of plants on the puter. I have finallly learned how to transfer from my camera to a travel disk and it works great! I am in a room right now where I can smell my lucanosa blooming. It is so nice to smell these.

DH is coming around though. He's into wood working and I have him making me orchid boxes (hoping I can learn how to grow these) and I had him make a tray with wheels to move the big pots around. He did these without grumbleing. He is either starting to enjoy my plants or he was bored and wanted something to do :)
Ann...have you tried using a deep purple for background? I find the green is nicely set off by it (Secondary Colors) without being overwhelming. DH uses black....
Karen and Dawn, congrats on those fantastic blooms!!
Carol, excellent advice - thanks! I agree, a jewel-tone like deep purple would be perfect for a background ... now to the craft store!
Ann
Today I could bbbbaaaarrrrrely smell syrup? (on the DS 70) Does that sound right? It was so faint I may be imagining it wanting to smell something so bad. lol Pitiful I know.
Dawn
Well, Carol....I see another one I need to add to the "Gimme" list. Just gorgeous!!!
Ann
Ann, I got this one in my last Hawaii ;~) order. I'll put a tag on your branch. I can't wait til it blooms! Should look much like Carol's.....
God bless, -joanne
Beautiful blooms everyone. Oh and thats right the month is almost over. October was still a pretty good month for blooms, I hope November is too.
David, Kristina has had a few hoya's that are like that, and someone else did too. If you go back through the post you can read about it. I have only had it do it once on my H. carnosa.
What other hoya besides H. nummularoides blooms from every node? How stunning it is... I likey !!!!
Tami...my H. cembra is blooming from every node on about 4 branches and everyother node on the other 7. Really is something!
