What's Growing - Part 11 -Fall's Upon Us!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I planted Zebrina this fall. every time I see it I fall in love again. it was blooming in the box when it arrived. I haven't grown nasturtium since I was a kid..good herb garden flower. I'm making a note :)

Welcome pegdog!
I still have swiss chard in the garden, have cosmos, pansy's, mums, malva zebrina, one or two roses all of which are looking pretty ragged bout now. We first had a few frost then the following week it hit 65 during the day and in the high 40's to low 50's at night. Naturally some of the plants reacted to it, asiatic lily came up through the ground, along with hyacinths. Two different daylilies shot up new scapes with buds!! Those will never open, but it was so strange to see. I only hope it won't hurt them any, and they come back in the spring.

Kassia ~Nasturium had a peppery taste the one and only time I tried it. It was in a salad and it really wasn't bad at all. Nice collage! And thanks for sharing all those wonderful colors!!

Andy/Gram/Al, Would one of you give me some seeds from that Malva? It's another plant I had at my last house that I miss more & more. Andy, I would prefer yours because Al's are too blurry. I don't like the blurry variety as much.

Pixie, Wow! And you are in Maine!

Dave - I have seeds of this one

I would love some.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

They look better if you squint.
They need room, but you should know that.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Thank you. (Does that mean yes?)

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I still have a nice big fat bud on my bizarre 'August-sprouting' clematis. actually, there are several, but only the one is really close to opening. If we got sun for 1 or 2 days I bet it would open.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

You bet!
I'll put in on your list, the rest of the stuff you don't know about yet.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

hi everyone... theay are also growing in Framingham...

lol on this thread. I've never grown Malva. Interesting and nice color, especially when you squint. I don't mind growing the blurry seeds! Lol

Kassia, you can eat tons of flowers like nasturium, johnny jump ups, chrys.mums, and even holly hocks!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

is lobster a flower? I should grow them!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll bring the butter!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have the pot!

Can eat daylilies too...but I rather just stare at them.

Edited to say: A Lobster Pot. Whew....left my self open for Dave and Al on that one!

Well, at least I'm predictable.

Lobster pot!

Kass- how big are your turtles going to get?

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I am going to try to eat nasturius next year,,, nothing like trying something new!!!

Al, according to an article I read the females can be from 5-7 inches and males slightly smaller,,.
Right now I noticed that they have grown... they are bigger than a water bottle cap... maybe about 1/8 inch...

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

LOL - I don't know what made me think of the movie Jaws..."we're gonna need a bigger boat"

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Al, where is your dahlia winter thing??? I decided not to be lazy and I dig up all the 3 dahlias I have and they are clean (no tatoos yet) but I am a banana head and I can't find your instructions... would you please be so kind to me and send me the link????
I am cleaning up spme of my plants on Friday afternoon before we get rain all day saturday...
thanks

your turtles look a lot bigger than a bottlecap

I filed this pic under 'last week of Oct 2006', but I should have called it 'why I love roses'. granted, they are growing right next to the nice warm foundation of the house, but they are also exposed to the cold west wind, and they weathered the worst October storm ever! the blooms on the last scapes of the Stella d'Oro look like daffodils.

I think I should start a pool on when this clematis bud will open, because I actually think it's going to make it. there was a little color showing yesterday when I took this pic. we actually had a little sun yesterday.

I wasn't going to bring in any more of the roses, but this yellow one was on a stem about 18" long and smelled so good when I walked by it yesterday, it is sitting in a prominent spot inside today.

Gram ~ They are beautiful! Yellow rose's are my favorite (there's a story behind my love of yellow roses) I would definately bring it in!
As for your clematis, I believe it may very well bloom! Do you remember the lily bulb that I planted and crabbed about because it came up through the dirt in late Aug.? It had a bloom in Sept. and I said it would never have time to open...I was wrong. It looks sick, sick, sick, but it opened!

Hi, the turtles are growing... they are bigger than the bottle cap... one of them is really bigger its really visible!
I am going to need a bigger place... you are rigth... I spoke with a friend that has easter painted turtles and she said it will take about 3 years to reach 7 inches... so I can plan maybe a pond for next summer???? see roses and turtles ... another reason to dream .... oh, not to forget "the greenhouse"... the monster is loose!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

pix, I remember that sad little lily sprout. it's the 'little lily that could'. Doesn't look too bad considering :-)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

The "little lily that could" is about to be blown to smitherines in 60 mile an hours winds. I said good bye already!! LOL

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

sounds like a very good day to stay inside ....'bye lily

Well, out lifting tubors today. Al, I have at least 6 small tubor sets from your seeds. (Plus 1 large tubor that came free with my order somewhere).
Checking out what was left blooming: a couple of daisies, 1 pentstemon red husker, 1 black eyed susan, 2 sedum autumn joy, mums, 1 aster, 1 I don't know (flower like an aster but different leave) ,1 chocolate eupotorium that I share with Al, a handful of roses (mostly bonica roses still blooming). Sounds more bountiful than it is.
I'm off to plant bulbs. Took it easy this year. Around 70 bulbs. Tulips, species tulips, daffs and allium.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Not much happening here, still very windy but we have power so im not complaining. Lost it yesterday briefly, but it just flickered most of the time. We had strong gust of winds and sheets of drenching rain for most of the day and night. Today it's dry but still extremely windy, found my Witch half way across the yard...seems she took her broom out for a short spin.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

The wind whipping the neighbors Weeping Willow...don't you know the wind was blowing in my direction. All those weak branches will end up on my lawn sooner or later.

This was dry land yesterday morning before the storm started....this was taken 24 hrs. later.

My bulbs are in. My son was a great help. He got a few in his little garden too. We also hung those tree faces on 3 of our trees. I like them.
I must have used about 25 lbs. of bone meal between the new & old bulbs. Tubers cleaned & drying in the garage. I'm going with half perlite & half peat moss. (No vermiculite in sight and could only get peat in the overpriced 8 qt. size.) It was a good day.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Sounds good to me, Dave. Wish I could have done that today, but the weather didn't cooperate. My bulbs are still waiting. I potted/repotted about 8 house plants today and potted up a bunch of herbs I got on sale from Hazzards for 50% off, so < .90 ea. I'm planning on putting in a new herb garden in the spring, so I figured I might as well grab 'em and winter 'em over in the house. all the basics...sage, parsley, basil, marjoram, chives, and even hyssop and lemon balm. it's supposed to be really nice here tomorrow and I work from home on Monday, so I might grab a long lunch and get some bulbs in the ground. I bought about 75 and got 20 free daffs with an order.

alyrics...2 pretties for you! I made a note about the shiso perilla earlier this season. neat plant.

I got 10 of those 95 bulbs in at lunch time today. I wish I could have taken the day off. It was beautiful here. and warm. short sleeve warm.

I posted a pic of my confused clematis over on musings...here's a different view of Dr Ruppel. he beat that storm yesterday and is half open

funny you should mention our confused plants. I was stunned yesterday to find that my Erichleer daffodils are coming up. They are up about 1/2 inch. I can't imagine what would stimulate them to come up now. Spring of 2005 they bloomed so densely they were just packed in tight, and then this spring they were very sparse. All I could think of was they had not finished blooming from last winter?
