Beneficial Insects ......

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Too many of us are prone to whack any insect we see ... how can we as members of DG inform others not to whack because the insect is beneficial.

(Who would ever have thought that a hornet was beneficial, all I knew is it hurt like the dickens when they stung me. OK you have taken a bite of me now be on your way, to eat hundreds of insects that are harmful to my plants???) I think that's part of the idea behind BugFiles - where you can give a thumbs-up to the good guys along with a comment explaining WHY they're beneficial.

"I think that's part of the idea behind BugFiles"

I checked a few of them and there wasn't any indication one way or the other that's why I posted the above.

Did you add a comment to those entries?

What you know will help others. And when you add comments (to BugFiles, PlantFiles, the Watchdog, the Bookworm, Garden Terms, etc.), your input will encourage others to do the same.

Sorry I posted it was just a thought and hoped it would be positive.

I don't think you can just add a checkbox that says good bug/bad bug, it's just like invasive plants where they can be good in some circumstances or areas of the country and bad in others (the hornet may be good in the garden, but if it builds a nest right by your front door you'll need to know how to get rid of it!) That's why putting in a comment is probably the best way.
