I went digging and dividing yesterday, to my OT lilies, their first divisions. I was so proud of how, after just 2 years, how many new bulblets had formed and sprouted stems. One lily had a very strange growth coming from the base of the stem. This lily had made successful divisions this year, which flowered and looked normal. This lily is a Robert Greisbach OT that I had purchased from Brecks a couple years ago.
I'm hoping it is not some disease, but I really haven't seen anything like it thus far. Any ideas of what caused this?
Bulb Deformity?
Mags, the image didn't make it through..
I would put it back in the ground quickly. Looks very healthy, good tissue from the looks of it. If you are worried, I would take off a couple of scales if you can (thought I could see one nice big one) if you are worried about it.
I've never seen anything like that but seeing where it came from, is it a named variety or one of Bobs seedlings? From Breks so I guess it is named.
Sometimes strange things happen. It might have some stoloniferous or stoloniform genes so I would replant and put some sort of marker on it so you can dig it up in a few more years to see what is happening to the bulb.
Very interesting. Thank you for so many pictures.
Hope we get lots of other comments from others on this one.
Inanda
Thanks inanda. Your experienced comments are so helpful. Thank you.
I agree with inanda. That curious thing is a mass of new bulblets forming. Sometimes this is due to an injury or other conditions, but it's a good thing. Lots of offsets there.
Robert.
I'm hoping you are right & you probably are. I planted it right away and marked it special, as to track it to see what happens. It just looked so odd, it was a growth flat against the stem and I do mean flat. Strange.
