LOL, Don! I'm afraid I have been quite mean to plants this year. I dug up and got rid of all my aggressive growers and those things that needed constant pruning. Anything with chronic insect problems got tossed too. I'm trying to make my life easier by getting rid of the problem plants. I don't want to grow a brug for its potential of blooming, and HG didn't bloom at all last year. And besides, I have a more lovely one called 'Duchess,' which I grew from seed. I named this one after my Great Dane who died in 2005. I may register her soon.

Oh Clare, I hear ya! I am always buying plants I have no business having. Too much work for this old gal.

I remember Duchess and the day she died. Oh so sad for you, Clare. It is amazing how we feel about our furry best friends. This morning when I woke up I had my Gabcat hugged in my arm where she sleeps most nights and she is so soft and so warm and she purrs. I was so happy in that moment. Then I remembered a friend just lost his cat to a car accident yesterday and I felt so sad. I already dread the day Gab leaves me if I do not leave her first.

Though Don, you solved that problem by filling your heart with parrots. The live so long. You have to worry about who will care for them when you are gone. My parrot is in trouble, my husband and son hate him so. Though deep down my husband is such a softie I think he will keep him and spoil him rotten.

Clare, your Duchess is just beautiful! Is she a Cream sickle cross?

Thanks you guys! Its funny, isn't it, how we love our plants and animals. You guys are my kind of people. I can't relate to people who don't love plants and animals! LOL!

Don, I'm so sorry about the loss of your two family members. That is just heart-breaking, and I can relate to your pain and feelings of loss. Spikey, Peanut, Yummy, Sweetie, and Tango are all wonderful. Yes, 'Duchess' is fragrant at night and smells wonderful. I can send you a rooted cutting of her if you like.

Kell, you are going to be around for a long time so no talking about leaving is allowed. LOL! But I know what you are saying. I'll probably leave my pets to a close friend and leave them a bunch of cash to take care of my babies after I'm gone. I feel terrible for your friend who lost his cat in a car accident. I hope he goes to the Animal Shelter to rescue another one right away. So many little lives are in need of a home. My cat Madam died this past February after having her for nine years. It left a definite hole in my life, but I rescued 'Buddy' from an animal shelter in Los Angeles, and he too sleeps under my arm and purrs and kneads. He's a character. 'Duchess' is a Susie French cross of 'Tiara' and 'HG,' I think.

Oh I will have to ask Susie for sure. It sure is pretty.

Your Buddy is sure cute. My cats knead too. Gab does it with her claws out. She hurts! LOL. I try and try to teach her to keep them in but she of all my cats is very expressive with her claws so I have to get used to them. I always have scratches on me.

WOW Don, you birds are all beautiful. They must feel right at home in their tropical surroundings. I would love it there too. LOL. Do they all get along? It must have been so tough to lose 2 dogs in the same year. 17 years is a very long time! We had our Nick 15 years when he passed this year. He was such a sweetheart.

We should talk of happier things! I try to focus on upbeat things these days. Like flowers. LOL

Hi Don.
I just wanted to say I have enjoyed seeing all your wonderful brugs in bloom. Such a wonderful site to see this time of year.
Sorry to hear about your family friends you guys. I have been on the quiet side because I just lost my best little gardening buddy last week. I miss him so!! He was always by my side helping me plant and water.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kell, that is a great color! I didn't know that you lost a pet this year. I'm so sorry about that. Buddy kneads with his claws out too, and it hurts sometimes too, but I love it when he does that. It makes me really feel like his mommy. No more going to bed without jami's anymore! LOL! I have to make sure that I at least wear a jog bra!

Oh, Kin, I'm so sorry. That is terrible. We all know what you are going through. Losing a pet is no less painful than losing any other family member. It's funny how are pets follow us around the garden and keep us company. I hope that, when your grief subsides, you will give another little fella the chance to be by your side in the garden again.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I find so many plant people have lots of pets too. I think we have a great big nurturing gene in us. I am dying to get a little dog. But my cat Gab will be crushed, she thinks she is my dog.

Oh Kin, I can feel your pain thru your post. I am so sorry.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Kin,I too am sorry for your loss ,funny how things stick with you,I'm always looking behind me when I go outside to make sure the door doesn't slam back on one of the dogs, trying to sneak out with you, funny how those habits continue on going!!!

Wowwwy! That is fire red orange, good thing my glasses turn into sunglasses at such bright light!!!LOL

Clare your a sweetheart, and of course I'd love to have one,Might even throw away my hg too!!!LOL

Wanted to ask if that fire was getting close enough to you to smell and see the smoke yet???

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Yeah, that's for sure. Losing a pet leaves a great big hole in one's life, and that's why I I adopted Buddy about a month after Madam died. I couldn't stand not having a cat around, and there are so many in need of a home. I didn't get another dog though after Duchess died because Duke is so old now and so jealous when I give other dogs attention so he gets to be the king of the household for as long as he hangs in there. We know we are going to lose him soon, and I will be unconsolable when that day comes.

Sure, Don. I'll get it in the mail to you on Tuesday. Let me know if there is anything else you need. I think I have some epi cuttings that you don't have that I'll throw in. I'll send you a d-mail. Yes, that Day Fire has made the past few weeks very smoky, and it drops ash all over the plants. It rained today for the first time in a long time so, hopefully, that will help the firefighters.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well lets pray they get it out soon!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

The rain really helped yesterday, and it is 95 percent contained now so it should be out soon. It is the fifth largest fire for California ever, consuming 162,000 acres of Las Padres National Forest. What a terrible shame.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes I agree what a shame, seems Californy gets more than there share of fires!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Clare, you got ashes on your plants? Not good to breath I am sure. Hope it is over soon.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

That's for sure, Don, but I guess each region has it's own problems. You sure get your share of snow!

Hi Kell, Yeah, I was hosing them off only to have more the next day. You are right that I was worried about breathing ash as I was watering and asked hubby to get me some of those paper breathing masks.

When there is a fire nearby, the smoke from the fire against the sun casts an eery light, making everything look yellow.

Good news I heard today the fire is now 95% contained!!!

Well lucky we haven't had much snow the last couple of years!!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

That is good, Don! I heard some heat records were broken somewhere in Kansas the other day!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yep 2 days in a row here, record was set in 1889,long time before that one was broke!!!
