Oh Clare, once again I have learned from you. So I have not been feeding my epis................ shoot. So feed with a high middle number? You obviously have the touch. Don, with Clare in our corner we are bound to succeed!
WOW Linda, lets see a pic. I bet Clare could walk you thru to get blooms. She has been my savior with my Plumies.
Here is the neighbor's epi.
Size of pink beauty's flower
You are such a doll, Kell. I thank you for your compliments and kindness. That is definitely a Epiphyllum oxypetalum in the picture. It looks like it will open tonight. Yes, I would start feeding in January weekly and don't stop until you see buds. After you see buds, you can switch to regular MiracleGro every so often until Fall. Others recommend fish emulsion as a supplement also.
You know the reason I have not gone nuts on epis is my lack of blooms. And also the snails just love them. I know 2 huge epi growers here. Shoot, if I have good blooming now I will go nuts on them. They are so very pretty! All your fault, Clare!!! LOL
Here is new hybrid done by a great guy at the San Francisco Arboretum, Ilie. He loves brugs, clivia and epis. This epi had the nicest burgandy tinged stems/leaves.
Louise,d-mail your address, and I'll send you some, mine are huge and need cutting back before I bring them in for winter, they'll be all the colors you see above that Clare posted.
Don
Kell, those are beauties, and I know how much you like bright pink! Isn't Epies by Pat up there by you? Here's her link (tee hee): http://www.epies.net/ Yes, you do have to scatter the snail bait if you have yours in an area accessible to snails and slugs. I don't have problems with snails and slugs, but I found a green bud worm on mine once.
Louise, that is a beautiful bloom. I highly recommend Epies by Pat: http://www.epies.net/ There is also a trade forum here: http://www.epiforums.com/ I just read Don's post while I was typing. Isn't he just the sweetest guy?
Oh Louise, I do not have the 2 I posted. In fact I do not have the 3 I posted. LOL. I only have 2 plants and neither have ever bloomed for me. They were cheapies from Navlets.
Clare, I have mine hanging in trees and the snails still get to them. Unbelieveable! LOL
There is a worker at Regan's Nursery that has one of their greenhouses full of them. He also sells online, a real nice guy. I will have to look to see if I can find his website. And Ilie from the Arboretum sells cuttings at lots of the S.F. Arboretum sales. I have only bought a few for friends. But maybe I will look for me if I can get mine to bloom.
Clare, I do no think Epis by Pat is near here.
Epis by Pat is in Orange County so closer to you Clare.
I have 4 now, 1 from Happenstance that bloomed for me, (below) my first blooms, just blew me away! I have cuttings from the lady across the street I got last year, no blooms yet and a garden club friend gave me two others recently. I have them on plant shelves so no snails. Now all I want is a big yellow one like Clare posted above and a large fragrant white one.
Clare,why you know I'm just pure SUGAR!!!LOL
Clare and Calif-sue,can you tell if those flowers of different colors stay open longer than
the white varities?I've heard of them staying open as long as three days, but can't remeber the variety!
Some of those bicolors are to die for!!!
I grow all mine in hanging baskets,no snails here except for the ones I have blooming tonite and what a fragrance they have, somewhere between honeysuckle and jasmine!!!
Your PINK 2 tone is gorgeous, Sue. There was one posted last year on Tropicals I think that was so incredible I just had to have it. I searched and searched for it. Of course now I can't remember it or who had it. I want to say Nathalyn did but I could be wrong. Sue, did you see it last year? I bet you and I discussed it at the time. It was that incredible. I never do trades but I would trade a double PINK for it in a second.
Oh Don, I think I finally have that vine started here. I have bought several only to find they really are the other one.

Thanks for the info on Epies By Pat, Sue and Kell. I don't know why I thought she was up north.
Kell, you may want to move those hanging baskets to another location because I think the snails' munching could affect your ability to have blooms if those snails climb up the trees into the branches and down to your basket and leaves.
That's a beauty that you posted, Sue. I too really like the yellow ones. So much so that I bought a few yellow cuttings from Pat earlier this year. I broke my no more plants rule, but I figured that they wouldn't take up that much more space.
Don, you are just the sweetest guy, and I adore you! You may want to consider repotting your hybrids. Mine are rootbound in huge pots. I know people say that they like to be rootbound and crowded, but I think that not having enough room for the roots could be affecting your ability to have blooms.
Kell, that is a gorgeous one. Did Laurrie know its name? Maybe you can find it at Pat's or Gray-Davis.
Edited to fix spelling:-)

Don, I forgot to answer your question in the post above. The hybrids stay open for several days to a week. The hybrids tend to open in the evening and then stay open for several days as opposed to the species which open in the evening and only stay open for one night. There are white hybrids which stay open for several days, and some of them are fragrant, and some are not. In most cases, the hybrids don't have any fragrance at all, but your 'Frances C.' does happen to have a lovely one.
I think this is your 'Saigon' below:
Oh My! I'm loving the your epi pics! I have a few, they are white with thin petals. One has bloomed for me. But just a few every summer. I also have a "ric rac" plant or is it fishbone, I think it goes by either name. It hasn't bloomed either. I think I will let them get some morning sun next year and feed sooner in spring... You alls are just breathtaking!
Oh shoot, you guys are making me want EPIS!!! Oh no!! I am so easy to lead astray. I go wherever I see a BBB, a big beautiful bloom, and now I want a sunny yellow epi one too.
I just do not know how I ended up being a nurse and not a florist!!
That yellow bloom pic is just so inviting. It screams getme getme getme.
Clare, I am so hot for that one. It is called Norwood and it wants to come live with me. You know I just was thinking epis do NOT get mites.............WHOA............a huge selling point. LOL Instead of miticides I can invest in slugicides.
I also love little sweet blooms! LOL
I think you're all a bunch of enablers! lol I just traded a hosta for a ginger!?! Why? I've never had gingers...... guess I'll be learning about them, now. Wow Kell, I didn't know slugs liked epis, ever try beer? For the slugs. :)
Thanks, AuntB! Yes, it is true that we are all enablers! LOL! Gingers are awesome! Mine didn't do anything the first year, but they put on a show the second year. They do seem to need a lot of room though to spread out and a lot of water. My gingers are all blooming now, and they smell wonderful.
Kell, yeah, that is a big selling point for me too. You can neglect them, and they still thrive! I like plants like that. They are kind of ugly when not in bloom, and they only bloom for about two to three months out of the year, but at least they are low-maintenance. Laurrie's 'Norwood' looks different than the other 'Norwood's' in the gallery. I wonder if the name is correct. Her's is so beautiful; it is more beautiful than the others, I think: http://www.epiforums.com/gallery/search.php?do=searchresults&searchid=12047 You may have to offer that double pink brug to Laurrie to get a cutting of hers to be sure that you get the same one that she has.
Sorry for the thread hijack, Don! Kisses,
Kell, that is a beautiful picture, and it is wonderful that you are a nurse. What an honorable profession!
Clare,I just repotted them last year.are you using plastic or clay, wonder if that makes a difference or not!!!
That pretty one Kell, reminds me of one of the Alstroemeria markings on the leaf, usually black lines or markings.
Clare have you gotten any fruit from any of these epies?
And is that yellow one a King Midas??
Clare you can hijack me anytime you have a mind too!!!LOL
I think you and kell must live on 10acres a piece to have so many pretty plants and flowers!!!
Oh Clare, such a neat site! So interesting that Laurrie has such a different one.
Oh Don, I have a little yard but I have a big addiction.
Hi Don,
Actually, I have some in clay, some in plastic, and some in those lightweight polyeurathane containers. I've not had any fruit yet, Don, but I probably don't have any pollinators around either. That yellow is an unknown from Antoinette, I think.
You're a doll! Thanks for letting me hijack your thread:-)
I actually have less than an eighth of a acre here. I keep digging stuff up to make more room. This summer, I dug up a section of the front lawn and planted a little garden and got some container plants in the ground. I'll never do that again. It was too much work! LOL! I'm like Kell -- with a little yard and a big addiction. I wish I had it the other way around -- a big yard and a little addiction;-D I'd do anything to not be a renter anymore. The landlord sure has a nice garden.
You guys should join that Epi Forum site if you want to! There is a lot of great info. and pics over there.
I guess were all alike, big addictions and little yards!!!LOL
Clare I'm sure the landlord thanks when ever you move, the yard was landscaped by somebody with the love of plants and flowers!!!
I hope so, Don. I just hope whoever moves in after we leave will keep watering and taking care of everything. Two of the Michelia trees and the Ylang Ylang tree are very valuable. I would take them with me, but they are too big now. People who don't have the love for plants just want plants that they don't have to take care of but that will still do well despite neglect. Let's hope a plant lover moves in after we move out. Yes, we are a lot alike here!
Yes we all are, NUTS! LOL
My son was in the marines and stationed in San Diego back in 1990,he was telling me that some of the nurseries were so big,you could drive a vehicle, thru it to look at the plants,we don't have anything here like that.I'd l;ove to visit Monrovia Nurseries, has either of you been there?
Hi Don! No, I haven't been to Monrovia Nursery. It's true though that there are some huge nurseries here that I've spent hours wandering through. I don't do that anymore and generally stay away from them because I know I just have no more room left for plants and know I will find something that I really want.
LOL!
I admire you!
For I am weak where you are strong!!!!LOL
Need a aaa for plant lovers!!!LOL
Oh wow, Don! That is one huge bloom! Clare I can't believe all the blooms on the cuttings. I have a Janet Reno that is opening finally. My first blooms for the year...sigh. I wish my other brugs would have done something this year. Not sure if I have a pink one or not.
:) Donna
There are a couple drive through nurseries in the San Diego area. We went to one that used to be wholesale only, right off route 805, because we're looking for a tree. It was fun to drive around in there. They had some brugs but just plain yellows and frosty pink types. Nothing named.
I've heard that there are nice palm tree burseries as well there.!
My lord!
Looks like the back of a alligators tail!!!LOL
No,I don't but when it flowers,it ought to be real interesting the way the leaves zig-zag,now what color do you suspect???
I'd love to drive thru a nursery,in my pickem up truck,I'd have it loaded to the top!!!!
Would you believe someone stole my gazing ball, after being out front in the garden 7 years!!!!
Large green one,it was under the HG brug!!!
If you look close at the bottom of the pic,you can see an empty pedastal!!!!
If one has a pickup truck and goes to a drive through nursery, that person could drive out bankrupt. I know I've busted the budget more than one time.
There's a big palm nursery in Northern San Diego County. Just off the 15 freeway. It's waiting for you Don!
WOW what a cool room. And esp. cool in Kansas. LOL. I love it. All you need are a couple of parrots flying around there.
I am going South again for another begonia gathering, I will really need to find me one of these drive thru nurseries. LOL
Oh, so sorry about your gazing ball, Don! That sucks! People can be so thoughtless and selfish sometimes. Are those HG flowers?
Kell, congrats on your new purchase! You are well on your way to another addiction! LOL! That is a species, and all species have white fragrant night-blooming flowers. That looks like Epiphyllum anguliger: http://www.ecology.org/tropicals/#Epis
Kell,I have 5 parrots ,and that just happens to be the room,we let them excerise in,twice a day.
The wooden perch, next to the chair,is where spikey chews the wood perch into mulch!!!
Yes Clare these are the hg you sent me!
And man do they ever have a strong fragrance too!
Don, that is fantastic that you got your HG to bloom! Mine will be mulch if they don't bloom for me very soon:-)
