about four days the first time, but a week and a half the second time. It depends on when you place your order.
If you order on a Monday, it goes out on Tuesday, if you order on Tuesday or any other day, it will be mailed the following Monday...

Tacca nivea (bat lily )
The link didn't work for me either; I'd really like to read of their experiences though.
Thanks for the acronym help seedpicker, I'm familiar with most (I think), but hadn't seen the DH or DD until I joined this website. I'm crossing my fingers and bet yours will be just fine, I'm going to be anxious to see yours open from buds. I'm really hopeful that my bud will open up like the big flower too.
I got mine super fast. I ordered over a weekend and received it Wednesday from Natural. My black bat from Eldon came really quick too - just about the same amount of time :-)
This is such a fun thread!
I ordered Sept. 26 from Natural and haven't received mine yet. I did receive the notice saying it has been shipped...so I meet the postman everyday but nothing, maybe today I'll get luck.
amarantha00 tell your DH he is very lucky that he has to put up with only some of your tropicals in the house, while I have to bring all of what I want to keep alive. Maybe when I clean up my house...lol.....I will take pictures....so don't hold your breath! Also DD is darling daughter or driving me crazy daughter.
:) Donna
Yes, people this thread has given me many minutes (hours?) of amusement and education (over 740 views, thus far!). Seems tacca plant buying is highly contagious! I thought I read somewhere (PF?) to let the plant dry out between generous waterings...... I'll try sitabrothers link..... I'm in 5b, so it will be pot bound (not root bound) for life. I do think I will put it outside during our growing season, though.
Amarantha00, I don't have a DH, however, I do have a BF. Actually, a DBF. lol
Hello all,
yes, you are right, the whole website is gone. What a shame, what a shame. It has the most complete info from "before you buy" to "FAQ" to "Seed Germination", and it just disappeared. I did find the name of the person who wrote the article, but the e-mail bounced and the phone# is not working. So sorry about this. I have a printed version dated 07/21/06, and I was almost sure the link still worked last month. Don't know what happened.

darn
Found some sites with great information on growing them:

can you make your printed forms into a (downloadable) pdf file?
Yay for you!

Come on Kell, you KNOW you want one, lol!
You all are killing me, too!!
I have had 3 white ones, and probably 10 black ones,
then, killed them all!!
I even started a thread about it"Help save the dying bats!!"
LOL!!! They all died, but I never got a bloom, so I am jealous
that ya'll got yours with bloom in tact.
Resisting......................

Well, I just received my white bat plant from Natural Selections Exotics. I'm embarrased to send a picture! After seeing everyone's new pics, I was anxiously awaiting my order. What a let down. I ordered the white bat plant, a Dr. Moy ginger and a Ms. Elizabeth ginger. All three were severely pot bound. When I say severely, I'm not exaggerating. It looks like they had been in those pots for years and stuck somewhere, say a deep dark corner of a negleted barn. I guess my expectations were too high. Needless to say, I won't be spending my hard earned dollars there again. The gingers I received from Stokes Tropicals look like GIANTS next to these that I received from NSE at comparable prices. I had to cut 2 of the pots off it was so root bound. IF they make it it will be from hard effort on my part NOT any type of care provided from NSE. I just expected healthy happy plants to arrive not ones gagging for breath!

DiamondD, Man! I'm sorry to hear that. I guess they have run out of all the good ones. That probably means mine is prolly gonna look bad too. Dagg on it, i guess I jumped the gun.
edited to say, please post a pic.

Well, everyone else has raved over theirs, how could I go wrong?! Maybe I was destined for a challenge. I guess I have been spoiled getting such great plants through the mail that this order was such a let down. Be sure and let me know when yours arrives, you might get a new batch and put all of us to shame :)
I only wish! Yours is going to make though right?
I think so, hope so. In reading this thread it was recommend to not disturb the roots too much. That was not an option for me. The roots were knotted and stuck together, some roots even wrapped around [tightly] and then making their way up to the top. I unknotted as many as I could, pulled some apart but I figured I had nothing to loose. There was no way it would have survived and been healthy had I not unwound them. As soon as I received them [I stood at the street for the postman] and removed them and soaked them in a bucket of water with a tropical blend liquid feed. They were dry, dry, dry. Not surprising really considering how pot bound they were, but I didn't realize that at the time. After their rest tonight, I'm thinking they will be perky since they have a new home, a new Mom, and lot's of love.
What a shame DiamondD. I got mine today (yes Kell, I succumbed too) and it was in excellent shape. It was too tall for the 4' box so some of the leaves had been folded for shipping but they are straightening out nicely. It has healthy roots too. The buds on mine are still tiny but the leaves alone make this a special plant for me, they have great texture.
Keeping my fingers crossed then!
Diamond D-
I"m very sorry to hear that, for you!
Can you please post a picture?...even if you think it looks bad?
So far they've sent me four, total, and they've all been really large and healthy.
I'm really surprised that yours would be so inferior to the others that they sent out. ...weird.
I have question, when they arrive and are ready to be repotted, do you put it in a deep pot?
Seedpicker, it's too dark out to take pics now but will tomorrow afternoon. I almost took a picture of the roots when I was untangling them but didn't stop to get the camera, well, I decided that I wanted to forget what it looked like. I tend to document the various stages of my plants and in the evenings I can admire their growth, or lack of. I will be heading out before it is light enough in the morning to snap a pic, so again, it won't be till late afternoon. I'm thinking with the blast of food and the new digs, she should be pretty perky. I'll 'tour the gardens' about 4 a.m. tomorow and know then if she's happy.
Just to reassure you, mine was a tangled mess of roots, too. I untangled them (which I guess is controversial, lol).
I'm sure yours, and mine, will recover and later thank us for the root straightening.
I'd much rather have a large plant with tangled roots, than a teeny plant with hardly any. I hope yours becomes very healthy and happy at your home. Sounds like you are going to treat it well.
I honestly can't imagine how they'd do it any differently, though, unless they grew these in bottomless supertall band pots. They obviously just have very long roots that like to grow straight down.

I did have some roots wrapped around in the bottom of the pot but the important thing was the condition of those roots and mine were fresh, new and healthy. If they had been dark and brittle I would have been disappointed but mine were fine. Haven't re-potted mine yet because I am debating if I should put it in the ground or not.
Seedpicker, I send you a D-mail. Glad to hear Ardesia that you had wrapped roots too. Mine weren't brittle, they appeared strong. I just took a quick look at her and she is perking up! I like to put all my plants in a pot if it is questionable that I will need to protect them in the winter. Typically for me, if I put them in the ground they are on their own :)
DiamondD, I just got an order of the alocasia robusta from Natural Selections Exotics and they were wonderful. Contact the nursery and see what they say. Maybe they've gotten a new shipment in and when send you another one.
Jeri
I just checked on her, she is HAPPY. Makes one wonder just how she would have looked had she had a better home before making her way to me! Maybe, just maybe, I was too harsh with NSE so I will retract my earlier comments so others will continue to get lucky. But I will have to be pretty desperate to order from them again. Yes, looking at her this morning, I said 'self, she looks good, do you want another one?! and Self said can you take the disappoint again? But it was worth it, look at her! Control dear heart control.'
That being said, I am pleased now with her but my original disapointment is too fresh to attempt another. Like I said, maybe after viewing others beautiful new arrivals, I set my expectations too high.
Vizz that sucker is huge! Where did you buy it from?
Diamond D I have been in that same spot many times! If only the venders would tell you in their description..."Don't be suprised if this plant is in the smallest imaginable pot, severely pot bound, does not resemble the picture on the web and is not particularly healthy...all of our plants look this way when they 1st arrive and eventually they begin to look like the pictures we have on our web..."
Home Depot has the White Bats for $40 right now and they are blooming.
Gosh, I need to move to Florida. I sure wish our HD would get such great plants.
Wow, that's awesome. Our Home Depots NEVER have good stuff. I keep reading about all of your great Home Depot and Lowes finds, and am pretty sure they must ship all their great stuff to everywhere in the U.S. except San Bernardino, lol. I guess I'll have to do with mail order, lol.
It's going to be really cool to track the progress of all these bats :-)
WOW..I read the entire thread with interest. Before I found this, I ordered seeds of the black bat.. now I am afraid I made a mistake !! Being up here in the cold, I need to ask all you lucky warm people if you know about growing these indoors as a house plant? Any suggestions?....LeeAnne
That 'Eldon Access' site that Amarantha00 posted suggested that they do well as an indoor plant.
You could always put a humidity tray under it, if you house is dry(they usually are during the winter from the heater).
A humidity tray can be as simple as plant bottom water tray, filled with pebbles and water. Set your plant on the pebbles so it is not just soaking in the water, and as the water evaporates, it will cause humidity on the plant.

For some reason all the Florida HD's and Lowe's get really good plants. I live less than three hours north of Jacksonville and we never see decent plants. Interestingly, my climate is actually warmer than many areas of FL (for instance Central FL and the Panhandle) but they get the good tropicals and we get peonies and lilacs that would never live in our hot, humid climate. Go figure!
Ardesia-
I'm with ya! I pretty much mail order everything...

AprilWillis thanks for sharing your experiences with root bound pots, it made me feel oh so much better. I'm also happy to report that my Tacca is happy in her new digs!
April :I got mine from HYPERLINK@naturalselections.safeshopper.com
