Tacca nivea (bat lily )

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

No hummidity here at all!! and it gets too cold in the winter. Sounds like they need a very tropical enviroment.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Sorry seed, I should have looked up there, thanks for the repeat Ü

I have a tacca getting ready to bloom also. I'm in N. CA. zone 9. Its outside on the patio and goes into the greenhouse in winter. I also have a couple I started from seed. Took forever for them to germinate. I just about gave up and they finally starting growing. I'll post pictures as soon as my bloom opens.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

What conditions/temperatures do you think finally convinced them to germinate?

I've heard they are very difficult from seed...congrats!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I was told the secret to seeds is casting them on TOP of the soil in the pot and NOT to cover them. Any truth to that?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Well, ....

If any of you noticed, that's the way God does it.....He doesn't come down and put them a 1/8 or a 1/4 inch under soil......

I would think that He knows what He's doing!!!!

Concord, CA(Zone 9a)

I started them in rock wool in those plastic seed starter trays with a clear plastic lid. It took forever for them to germinate. They were is a warm area out of direct sunlight. I think I was very lucky. Now if I can just keep them alive. I need to go take some pictures.
Just goes to show you I have no idea what I am doing. lol. I figured seeds are inexpensive so what do I have to loose but a couple of bucks.lol As my daughter says I will try anything.

Curse you Taylor for that website.... Arrrrggggg!!!!!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Please no curses, lol...Giancarlo was the initiator

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I did read that the seed can take forever to germinate...I'd probably assume they were not going to, through them out and the local land fill would find this lovely exotic bloom! LOL.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

April, I think it's wonderful for you to want to improve the look of the landfill LOL

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Very Beautiful.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Beautiful, giancarlo! I've always thought they were so cool. Oh sure, Taylor get one before me...lol.

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 8b)

I too had to go immediately to the site and purchase! I'm just as anxious as you were Seedpicker for it to arrive. Every morning I tell myself '...no, no don't do it, stay away from Dave's Garden and I just can't help myself. But it is killing me. I saw the picture of Giancarlo's bat flower and had to have one. Hope I can do as well.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

DD,

What would you want to stay away from family?

Hap

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

An enabling family even? Enabling with safe & fun addictions. Nothing better! Unless your wallet is totally empty and you have no plastic. Then you may want to be serious about staying away. ☺

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 8b)

Happy & CaliSue: Such kind words! I tell my husband, you have 2 choices, over look my plant expenses or pay a therapist. He happily over looks my plants. And even accomodates me when I make a request for a new planter or bed or garden house! Well, I have about 10 new 'babies' coming in the next 2 weeks, I'm running out of room. But it is such a wonderful hobby! I like the unusual, and the challenge to see if I can keep them happy and healthy. Every time someone offers a suggestion I just have to explore their ideas. Hence, the new bat plant, the new plant markers, the new snail vine, the new plumeria and the list just goes on and on and on! I think I need a meeting :).

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I think that you are doing just fine.....or as bad as the rest of us........ROTFL

Sounds normal to me!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheesh...I just bought three more, lol...

Donna-They won't ship to you,... (so I bought you one)

Okay, I've been watching this thread. I LOVE that bat! I've enjoyed all the banter and "frenzied" buying! lol What a hoot.. really, go back and read from the beginning... Everytime it comes up on my threadwatcher, I think "okay, who bought one now?" DiamondD- you are normal like us! People that don't understand are the ones that need help! I just bought one and an amorph, too! SO glad I'M normal. Thanks for the fun and I wish you all the best blooms! Giancarlo, the pic is awesome. Over 400 views...Thanks for starting it all!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL!!

I should start getting kickbacks for referrals to that site, lol...

AuntB-Irresistable price, isn't it??

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

It is a good company, nice sized plants, I bought from them last year too. They are friends with Brian Williams from this Tropical forum here.

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 8b)

Okay all, here is the challenge: post your picture as soon as you receive it. Then again when you get your first bloom, we will see who gets lucky! Thanks again for recommending the site, did I mention that wasn't all that I bought from them!

Louisville, KY

Here is a pic of a very rare Tacca I am not sure if this was ever named you can make out the flower at the top of the pic. The leaf is not like most taccas looking a bit like a hand in shape.

This tacca was considered a Amorphopahllus for a long time but its flowers are Tacca so it was later put into that group. I have a bit of a time telling it apart form my other odd aroids. This one goes dormant and acts just like a amorphophallus.

B......

It is so good having you back confusing us all.....

God is Good...

Hap

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

OH BRIAN! Good Golly! Now I want that one! It is tacca, right that goes dormant??? What's its name? I Love dormant going tropical plants, makes them so much easier than a brugmansia to winter-over... Seedpicker your "commissions" would be stacking up... thank you for the link. I bought a $40 aroid..... it was a weak moment for me.... :) AND, I deserve it cause I'm a nice person! Yep, spent my "allowance"- back to the Plant TRADING forum for me.....actually to bed.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the info and pics Brian!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Yep-
That is not all I bought, either...

I've been looking for the "correct" medinilla for a LONG time. I bought one a while back, but it turned out to be medinilla myriantha. Myriantha is not as showy because it lacks those gorgeous bracts.

They have the REAL Medinilla magnifica, with the pretty bracts.

I also saw a rare RED medinilla on their site. ($95!, and they're sold out, lol)...good thing I don't like red, lol...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well shoot, I found one here but I am afraid it needs humidity to live and we have little all summer. Has anyone grown one successfully out of a GH in the Bay Area?

Tacca Chantrieri "Black"

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm really finding it hard to resist the temptation!!!!! I want both black and white... would there be an advantage in waiting until next spring? Do they have a dorment time?

Viv

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Enabler Bonnie says "oh, Viv, get em' both, you know you want to.." :) I didn't resist. It is a great deal. I've waited till spring on things before and seems what I want is out of stock.. I liked the size of plant we're getting... I'm almost positive they don't go dormant.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

And don't even look at their offerings on eBay, some prices even better than their online store.

Oh, now Sue, don't ruin it for us, our purchases have been justified at the price we paid. lol AND you HAD to put the link in.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I like that rattlesnake plant.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Me too AuntB, caught my eye with that striking foliage, and now it's gone. Can be found on the site though under 'Other Plants' on the Home page.
