Not sure if this is where to post this...

Brimfield, MA(Zone 5a)

I was wondering why there aren't zone maps for Canada and other countries? The DG USA zone map is a link to BHG and what if they move it on their site, or take it off (not likely, but possible...)? I admit to having no knowledge of adding content to a website, but it seems like it might be a fairly easy thing to download and add to this site.

Please don't be offended by my suggestion, it's just that I'm always looking up so much gardening information and I hate to leave Dave's to find it elsewhere. "All roads lead to DG" anyway, but it would be convenient to just stay in here.

Thank you for your consideration.

Megan

I'd love to host it here at DG, especially since it's always possible that BHG could remove it. The trouble is, the files belong to BHG and it would be stealing to host it here.

If someone ever came up with a world-wide hi-resolution (PDF) map of zones, along with a data file of the latitude and longitude lines, that would be the coolest thing in the world.

This is a pretty good one: http://www.ahs.org/pdfs/USDA_Map_3.03.pdf
I wonder if AHS would allow it on this site. You can zoom down to a county.

That map you linked to is the new proposed USDA zone map but there's a lot of controversy around it. We had it published here at DG for many years but ultimately I took it down because there were so many problems with it.

I wonder if a map can be generated by indicator plants in PF by location and a map generated based on that data. I know in the defunkt Canadian zone map certain species indicate a zone limit. Just a seed for an idea.

There's your million. Construct such a map then copyright it and sell it. The bucks would probably fly in over the internet. Or you could make it available for free. Maybe get a research grant to create it.

Well, how'z 'bout this. Using the zip reports in PF, generate a red dot on a map. I'm sure I've come across this before.

I knew I'd seen it before and here it is: http://planthardiness.gc.ca/ph_main.pl?LANG=en
Take a look at the example species (Red Oak) which shows a dot for each input of the species by postal code, I believe. We already have reporting by zipcode, now how do we show a red dot for each indication of a zipcode on a map that can be zoomed on? I'm sure there's a way to input postal codes as this example shows.

How's about google maps: http://www.google.com/apis/maps/
It looks like the info can relatively easily generate a map with indicators.
