Good morning to you!
I remember when I was a kid that my mother would come upstairs to wake us up for school and she'd sing that or some other cheery ditty. It got so that I'd wake up sitting bolt upright by the time she'd hit the stairs, saying "DON'T SING!" Better than any alarm clock. (My brothers seemed to react to her singing about the same way that I did.)
Anyway, we were over here before http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/646363/
Coffee and ......... for Saturday, September 2nd
Patti, is it your birthday? Well hope it is a good one. How is the kidney stone? Of course you will need to wait until after the holiday to get something done.
Carat, the BBQ smelled delicious when we left. This is a "real cookoff" and probably will have some of the best cooks ever there. Let me know if you get to taste it.
LaurieWilson, If I had known you were so close, I sure would have let you know. I would have loved to meet you, and we could have had a competition about who lost the most moola!! Okay, from now on, I will post my whereabouts well in advance, and if anyone is near, I will go to extraordinary lengths to get to meet you. Hope everybody will do the same. Just love to put "faces with names".
Maria, I know that you appreciated your DD and DSIL's help today. I have a Rainbow sweeper, and it sure does a good job. I would be ashamed to let anyone see what is collected in that water. With dog and a long haired cat in the house, it is unbelievable.
I01, hope that the excitement of your birthday lasts for weeks. Isn't it wonderful to have good friends, and lots of well wishes not only on birthdays, but every day. DG is great!!
Molly, I have your birthday on my calendar. Hope that you have a good one. Maybe it will be extra special this year, now that you are settled and planted.
Darius, saw your post on the canning forum, and I have posted a reply to your request. I can remember my mom canning pork, we always killed a hog in the fall, and she canned the meat, as freezers were for the rich.
which we weren't)
McCool, when is DH's party? Hope it all goes well, and how rude that people can't let you know if they are coming or not. Wish DH a happy ffrom us.
To let you all know, DH had his stitches out today. His ear looks good. This turns out to be one of the best known plastic surgeons in this area. Aren't we lucky that we have these services near? I did 2 loads of laundry before the energy gave out. There is 1 load left, but it will keep for another day.
Tomorrow night is our last of the season fish fry. DH is taking a cold, and I am feeling rotten, but since we have invited 80=90 people, can't cancel. Just will have to pull ourselves up by the boot straps and muddle through this. We plan on breading the fish tomorrow morning, and I will need a trip to town to gather last minute supplies, then we will rest tomorrow afternoon, and then begin about 5:00 p.m.
Hope you all have a good night's rest, and awake feeling better, and more refreshed. Not setting an alarm, just depending on mother nature to get us up. Today has been overcast and raining, so hope the weather improves overnight.
Good night all.
Just had to sneak in while DH was in the shower to say Good morning while it is still morning for everyone. Have a great weekend everyone.
Casey
Good morning, Casey, glad you snuck in! I have been up for an hour was still dark out there but getting brighter now , I think we are going to have a cloudy, rainy holiday weekend.
Wish all of you a good one
Hi everyone ... Am getting ready for the DB and also to get out the door for the craft show today. don't want to wait too late as it will be hot out. It's a big event in this area, though and lasts for 2 days.
Maria, so glad you got your vac put together and like it. It's nice to havve family that can help out when you need them isn't it. Hope you are still feeling better today. :-)
Defoe, glad the DH got his stitches out yesterday and that it looks like a good sewing job. :-) He was really lucky! Y'all try not to overdo it with the fish fry this evening. Sure hate you are both feeling bum today. Wish I were close enough to lend you a hand.
Molly, so glad to hear about your job. :-) Did you decide not to go up north?
Well, Casy ~ at you for now cause I've really got to get up from here. Will check in when I can.
~~~~~~ to everyone for now.
Good morning to one and all, back to my cyber life. DS hit the road at 6 a.m. fortified with a cup of coffee and hoping not to run into too much Ernesto rain as she approaches N.C. tomorrow. It was fun to see her, but also nice to have her gone. Most of her conversation is complaints about her DH and it gets old pretty fast. She didn't have a pleasant summer though, with the son who bought the house and his family there for a month. She was reminded several times that it wasn't their house any more, but it didn't seem to bother them that she was the only one cleaning and dusting.
Her son did all the cooking, and their three girls did the dishes. Oh dear....what a disaster. Their mother hasn't taught them how to do them properly...i.e. using HOT water, rinsing, not using the dish cloth to wipe up splatters on the floor. She didn't want to be criticizing them all the time, but I can see where it would have been hard not to say something. I told her, I probably would have just packed up and left them to their own devices!
Nice to be back. Is everyone feeling a bit better? Maria? Has Darius injured anything besides the kitchen towel? Sarv's itchies? Might be something in the air this time of year..DH used to take Imitrex for those horrible cluster headaches he used to get, but his Dr. switched him to a new Rx, Relpax. He's been doing well on the daily meds though and hasn't had a real Banger for a while.
Bonnie, too bad you left your loot at the Casino. I'm such a poor gambler, I just hate seeing that money slip out of my hands. I'm just too cheap! Only go to the casino when we plan a luncheon at their bountiful buffet, where I do my best to make up for the money I've lost. Since this is your last fish fry for the year, everything will turn out delicious and they'll all be back for the first one of 2007. Hope you are feeling much better today.
Robert, weren't you tempted to leave at least a couple paw prints in that cement? Your Zinnia photo is beautiful. I have a few here and there, from a ten cent package of seeds I threw in late in the season. Worked out nicely as some of the other bloomers have passed their prime, and they add some bright notes. My hardy Hibiscus are sending out a bloom or two the size of saucers!
Hope, the kittens are just adorable. Will you keep them or find homes for them when they are weaned? They are so sweet. Olivia was a good girl while my DS was here, and smooched her up good. DS thinks she is too skinny....but that little girl is on the move every waking moment and looks for all the world like a ferret!
Molly, congrats on landing another painting job. Have you decided yet whether or not you'll make the trek to MI to do your DB's property? Sounds like a major packing up and hauling job. Is the roof leak fixed yet?
Dorothy, I had to mark your other thread with a watch, so I don't miss any of the excitement. It's going to be so much fun to watch all your progress, and not have to do any of the work! It will be so beautiful once you can get your gardens started.
Elaine, tofu in pasties........sorry,. but yuck!! I'd skip the tofu and just load them up with carrots, cabbage, beans or whatever other veggies you have on hand. The old timers used to put rutabaga in them, but it's hard to find. Now you've whetted my appetite for them, but I can wait until it gets really cold before I make them.
Scooter, I can't really compare the Dyson to the Kenmore's power head with the beater bar. My power head died, and needs to have the belt replaced but I'd guess the Dyson works better. That old Kenmore itself won't die though, so it's worth repairing. I keep it down by the big litter pan to catch the stray litter before they track it all the way up the stairs to the laundry room. That bag is mighty heavy when it needs to be replaced!
I think I'm caught up,,,,weather report says we might get rain but it's sunny and bright today, so I hope it stays that way through Monday when Kooger comes through, and doesn't spoil our visit!
Later
Sheila
Edited because I can't spell this morning.
Morning everyone- late getting here this morning....slept like the dead courtesty of two allergy tabs. At 10pm last night I went to the pharmacy - sick of the itchies. Talked to the pharmacist- showed her my arm and got some meds. She said that in the last week, they've had tons of people in trying to find some relief. DIL send me home with two different kinds of lotions to put on from her doc.
Got a new cell phone- takes pics too- how funny! Spent last night programing in all my numbers. Phew, that was a job, but it is done (I wonder how many errors I made tho...)
I was bored last night so decided to take a drive by myself. Ended up going over to DS/DIL house as they were supposed to be going away for the weekend. But they were still home, so I stopped in and picked up my new phone. We ended up going out for dinner and had a great time. DH wanted to stay home and watch wrestling...can you imagine...
Another birthday!! Sending a big hug to you Patti!! What fun thing do you have planned?
Maria- how nice your kids came over. Sounds like the Dyson is going to be a wonderful cleaner for you. Did you get the pet one? Food cooked by someone else is always much better than your own!! DH made a hash and scrambled eggs this morning. Tasted wonderful too.
Oh, I'll go to the casinos anytime - I love it there....however, I always lose...
Well, CRS has hit and I spy DH outside starting to close the pool...I should go offer a hand..
Good Morning all, it is gray, overcast and sprinkling rain here. Slept in a bit, Mother Nature didn't wake us.
Already doing prep for the fish fry, need to run to town to get a few forgotten items.
M5, didn't know that you and Kooger were meeting this week, good for you both.
Well, gotta get a move on, will BBL
Wow, Yall been up and chatting while I was on the phone this morning. I just got a call from my former neighbor at the last place I lived. So here's what's been going on there.
They sold 3 properties across from my old rental place and they are building townhouses over there. My old landlord had to kick out his tenants because they were disrupting the peace too often and they were several months behind on the rent. He had an offer of $375K on the house and in his continuous greed, he turned it down. In this deflating market he's under the impression he's going to bring in over $400K. Too bad he didn't stand by his word on renting to me for 2 years and not selling..................
I thought a little harder about going to Michigan to work. I had to push aside that urge to go visit with family and look at things economically. I just would not be able to get ahead moneywise, by making the trip.
Anyway, we can make the trip in the spring. My brother needs to save his money to make their annual trip down here this fall/winter. His wife almost has him convinced they need to come down here for Christmas, she has grown children down here in Fla.
Did I tell yall that my fall veggie garden (part 1) has all germinated and grown considerabley, except for the carrots. I put part 2 in about 5 days ago. The cukes and zukes have germinated. I did it in 2 parts because I couldn't get a hold of all the seeds I wanted at the same time.
I could kick myself. I forgot to use the Messenger seed puffer on the part 2 seeds. I did for the part one and germination occured withing 7 days on all but the carrots.
Todays plan is get my heucheras that I bought in the co-ops moved from the orchid house out to the shade garden. I need the space in their flower bed for planting my newest daylily seedlings. I am going to be trying to push growth on these to see blooms by end of next summer (I hope) Although no one will divulge their secrets on how to accomplish this in less that 2 years. I shall give it a try.
I really should get up now and try to get some work done. TTYL.
Molly
:^))))
Snuck in for a minute. DH is on vacation next week so I have him home for 9 days in a row. So excited!!!! Since we only have the grandbaby two days next week and my kids are back in school well have some quality time to ourselves. I love spending time with my hubby and don't get much alone time with him any more. This is a great treat. He didn't even tell me he was doing it. Like that:)
~~~~~~~~~~~~ing to everyone Happy Birthday Patti have a good one.
Won't be on much this week but will be thinking of all my DG's friends. To those sick hurt ot just downright sad Get better very soon If I don't get a chance to get back on today everyone have a wonderful weekend I know I will.
Molly, you should have lots of room in the shade garden as you dig up my shade plants! The planned area for them here is currently clogged with all the debris from the downed weeping willow tree so I need to attend to that immediately. I forgot to call Sidney back and say we chose shipping rather than her bringing them. Will try to remember to do that today.
Brent should be here at 11:00 and we will start on walls in the barn, assuming I have more electric cords to reach. Still haven't spliced the one Buster chewed up with his mower.
I have more defrosted peaches I didn't finish yesterday but I did get my wineberry jelly made. Almost have room in the freezer for an ice cube tray! But... someone in the newspaper has blackberries for $10 a gallon and I'd love to put up some blackberry savory if they are not all sold.
My brother Bobby, age 57 (I have 3 half brothers) lives in Jacksonville, FL. He recently bought a Harley and thinks he's going to ride it up here to see me soon. Yeah, right. It's a 12 hour trip, minimum, and longer if he takes the back roads as he said.
BBL
Usually, after a hurricane passes, it pulls all moisture out of an area and we have a few pristine, low-humidity days, but NC is not so lucky this time. Another front was working its way east so it is cloudy and gloomy here and is supposed to remain that way, on and off, all weekend.
I am hoping the rain stops long enough to finish digging and dividing my irises. They are too close to my daylilies and the daylilies are smothering my pinks, so the whole bed needs attention.
I still have to garden in small time segments because of my back. I kid my spousal unit and tell him I am going to write a book called "The 15-minute gardener."
what is wineberry jelly? what is blackberry savory? I hope Bobby has fun, but I'll bet he has to spend the night somewhere.
Back in for a short visit. Crisp but sometimes sunny here today - door and one window are open!!
DH is closing the pool today!! Yea, after last months electric bill with AC running full tilt plus the pool going 24/7, I need to rob a bank!! Just think, tomorrow I won't wake up to that filter running in the background!! I've noticed a decline in the birds chirping in the morning too. I thought our resident 3 hummers had left, but they buzzed my head this morning on the garden walk, so they are still here.
Darius, friends of ours road their Harley's from Mich out to California. They loved it. There are several groups around here that take trips on them. Not for me tho!! But in my younger years---yahoo- I loved them!! Hope you and Brent accompolish tons today!! No rest for that kid is there!!
Molly - hope the market hits rock bottom for your stinky landlord...hate people who go back on their word... I got some heuchera from the co=op and all are doing fine except for one- the cats must have dug it out and I didn't find it until it was crispy. Despite all my loving attention, it is history. I'm envious of anyone who can get in a second garden. Ours are winding down and a freeze will not be far in the future.
Well, I should go offer some help to DH. I did bake him some peanut butter cup/choco chip cookies. There's a plate on the counter for anyone who is hungry!! I'll put a candle on the biggest one for the birthday girl!!
Sarv, I am really happy to be able to put in a fall/veggie garden, particularily since the spring summer veggies was such a failure.
It was all a learning experience (I learned we're not in S Fla anymore) and it seems I have learned because the fall stuff is doing so well. We may eat this winter yet.
:^)))))
Woodspirit, wineberry is a fruit much like a wild raspberry, only more tart.
http://www.motherearthnews.com/library/1982_July_August/The_Wineberry_s_Winning_Ways
Blackberry Savory is a sweet/sour accompaniement kinda like we use cranberry sauce with fowl. I make up up a tart vinegar with spices and hot peppers and use a little of it in blackberry jelly. Makes a delightful sweet/sour side to use with pork or chicken.
Brent hasn't shown up. Sigh. So much for teenage boys.
Hi folks,
We've made it as far as Vancouver airport. Once here, we asked if an alternative routing might be available so that we didn't have to sit around here for 5 hours and then go to Ottawa via a change in Calgary. We are using points and the desired routing isn't always available when we make the bookings, but once actually in an airport, they are usually really happy to send you on providing your luggage hasn't already been checked through and there is space. SO, in about half an hour, we board a DIRECT flight for Ottawa which should get us home a lot earlier than we thought.
Must give up computer. There are others waiting to use them in the lounge, but it sure is nice to have an English keyboard.
Ann
Happy Birthday Patti...Hope it is filled with fun and lots of Chocolate Cake!!...Lauri
Darius, Your brother should have no problem driving that far.
Shoot, I am older than him and make my solo trips from Milwaukee area to Key West ,
just taking it easy with 3 stops inbetween.
Nashville
Troy Al
Daytona
Once I did add a stop at Homestead because it was late in the day and raining so hard I could hardly see. I do not drive after dark on these trips.
Could push it harder but my thousand mile days are long gone .
Anyway , you know a gal's gotta have time for window shopping and going out to eat at a local cafe ;-))
Coming home I slightly veer eastward and take in the mountains of Ga ,Virginia , KY & TN.
Oh have a good one for ya.... DH drained about 2 ft of the pool water off (he's closing it)- came in for a rest - went back out and the pool timer had come on (he forgot to turn it off) and practically emptied the pool!! Now we are refilling it. How do you say duhhhhhh...
Now we have to add more chemicals too...We'll remember this closing for sure!!
Vi = glad to see you heading home. Seems like you just left tho!! Can't wait to hear your tales of what happened and the fun you had.
Happiest of birthdays PattiLurker!! Definitely chocolate cake!! And Yayyyyy, Ann's coming home!! And Booooo for teenage boys who don't know how to keep their commitments!
Scooter, my girlfriend rode out to W. Va once behind her BF on a BMW and had a sore tailbone for months!! You got grit, woman!
DH just bought another Honda.......asked him where he was going to put it. Said he's gonna sell it. I said, yeah, like the Maverick, the other Honda and the extra Mustang. I'm running a little short of patience.
Back to work.
Sheila
Okay, I'm back and obviously a glutton for punishment. Just LOOK at these blackberries! I ended up getting 3 gallons, at a better price. First time the lady has ever sold any but she has a bumper crop and needed to get rid of some. Said she will probably top out at 100 gallons this year, more than her family can eat. 3 short rows about 20 feet long.
Mine are juicing as I write, hate the seeds!
What a haul, wish you could use my Victorio with the seed strainer, it would save you soooo much work! Those are luscious!!
My food mill will have to do, but then I strain again through jelly bags for a really clear broth.
OH man, I hate those jelly bags but a gal's gotta do what a gal's gotta do. Brent ever show up?
S.
Nope.
Did you call him to see what happened??
No, he's a teenager. I'd only get excuses and I wasn't in the mood for excuses. I did talk on my porch last night to his mother, and she thought he'd be here.
Man what a dofus I am! I don't know whatever made me tackle juicing 3 gallons of blackberries in one fell swoop. My kitchen looks like Charles Manson visited!
Anyway, halfway finished, excepting the mess. I might get a full gallon of juice, just have to find freezer space until I decide what to do with it.
Holey Moley- that is one mother of a mess Darius!! I've always wanted one of those Victorio thingies. Those berries really looked massive!!
Well, the pool is officially closed...Amen... DS/DIL/DGS came over and the guys all did it while the girls sat inside and laughed. My folks came out. I felt so sorry for them. DM said they were so lonely - just sitting at home and were hoping we would ask them out. She had made potato salad just in case they got asked out here. Now I feel bad for not calling her bright and early this morning. Anyhow, we all had a hamburg fry afterwards and soapilla cheese cake and ice cream for dessert. I pigged out on the cheese ball appetizer we had earlier, so I wasn't hungry at all.
Sent my folks home with a ton of produce from the garden. DM is making stuffed peppers and bringing them out for dinner next week.
After dinner DM, DGS, and I played the card game Speed. It was fun.
I am all screwed up on days- today seems like a Sunday!
Time for a shower...I'm pooped
Hi folks. Home safely. Too tired to read and respond. Will try to get caught up tomorrow.
Ann
Welcome back Ann, bet you are very tired, hope you will have a good night with sound sleep
Hi everyone
Just got a minute before time to turn in. We have had a lot of fun with DB today. went to the craft show and boy was it hot! Saw a lot of pretty things, but didn't buy anything except for some kettle corn which I adore. We cooked steaks tonight for supper, and they turned out very good. We had some of my million dollar pie my neighbor made me for my Bday yesterday. That rounded things off nicely. :-)
Ann am ~ at you. So glad you're home safe and had a good trip. will be looking forward to hearing all about it.
Pati, I sure hope your silence today doesn't mean you're not getting along well.
Hi Maria ... how are you feeling? Sure hope you're on the mend now. :-)
Well, I see Defoe hasn't checked in yet, so I'm thinking she's probably bushed after feeding all those folks! I can't even imagine having that many over to fry fish for.
Defoe ... I sure hope you and your DH are feeling better tonight and didn't overdo today.
sarv, sounds like y'all had *one* heck of a time today closing out the pool! LOL
Meezers, guess that's just a man thing. Just let him go at it and then you can spend your $$ on your garden! LOL Hmmm, maybe another kitty would be the ticket? :-)
Well, please forgive me for not speaking to everyone but I really need to get my bath and put this tired ole bod in the bed. I'll just say night night for now.
~Elaine~
Ann, glad to see you are home safe and sound....looking forward to pics! :)
We decided to postpone going to my DS in Oostburg, WI. This is the first time in 1.5 years that I have had 3 days off in a row and I just want to be home and if it stops raining, paint on Mon. I want to get a bunch of volunteer babies potted up for our Fall Fest at work on the 13th. And I have tons of sorting and putting away to do inside - the dining room table does not have a square inch of table top showing! I'm feeling the pressure to do some of these jobs before my surgery.
Speaking of which, I've decided to postpone that till the 25th since our DD is moving on the 15th. If I stayed with the 11th, she'd be too busy to help me and I'd not be able to help her so going with the 25th is a better date. It also allows me to participate in the Fall Fest.... more playing in dirt! lol
m5 is hopefully going to forgive me for not showing up - I promised we wld come the week before I go back to work - we'll be able to stay longer then too.
I'm washing dishes so better get back at it. We bummed all afternoon in S.F. - 3 hours at Barnes and Noble and 2 hours at Savers. I bought a pair of red shoes, 4 tops and a book for abt $12. Pretty good haul! Night all.........
Well, I am typing with a cat on my mouse, and inteferring with all computer functions. Inconvenient, but it happens!!
Back from the fish fry by 8:00, it was good, had a power failure during the meal, so we had a candle light dinner!!! We had 65 folks show up, and it was all good. Didn't get all the fish fried because of the power failure, (electric cooker), but made do with everything else. I just marvel at the fact that we have so many friends. These are people that you can count on, no matter what the situation. We could call any or all, with a request for help, and they would respond in a minute. Ah, just have to count my blessings, on this front.
I had something weird happen to my left foot tonight. I dressed comfortably in tennis shoes, and half way through the night, my foot started hurting. So took off my shoes, and joked that I have to practice wearing shoes, as winter is coming. (that's the truth, as I go barefoot most of the time). When I got home that foot was red and swollen, so sat with an ice pack on it for a couple of hours, it is not hurting as bad, but still am having trouble walking with the pain.
Called DTS tonight, and her Dr. had told her that she had a sinus infection, mine told me I had bronchitis, but we have managed to infect both our families. Just think, about 200 people on all our flights (4 in all), plus the people at the convention, we figure we have infected about 2500 people with whatever we have had. Since I don't know them personally, I don't feel as bad as DTS, she has infected people that she works with. DM wasn't feeling well today, so if she is still not feeling well by the first of the week, will take her in to see the Dr, as she is not strong enough to fight this whatever.
Darius, yes, it does look like Charles Manson visited you, plus maybe Lizzie Borden. Hope that you will be able to find a use for all that juice. I'm thinking blackberry jelly, yum, with hot biscuits and butter.
Viann, glad you are home, hope you have a good night's rest, and you can start telling us about your trip tomorrow.
M5, that is a "man thing". Just keep account of what he spent, and do likewise in the plant department next spring. My DH retired from farming 3 years ago, but we have 5 tractors. The latest acquisition was a "bargain" that he could make money on, well, the bargain is sitting in the barn, waiting to be winterized!!
I01, glad that you enjoyed your day. Hope that you and DH will get some "quality time" without DB before the weekend is over.
Kooger, glad that you have settled on a "date" for the surgery. Hope everything goes well, and that you will be out of commission for a short period of time.
Sarv, do you mean to tell me that DH almost drained the pool? I am going to pool school on the 9th, hope that it will not be painful financially. While I was gone, DH dumped in a concoction of chemicals, and the PH is way out of balance. So will have to address that before we can even think of closing our pool. We got our electric bill a few days ago, and with the AC and the pool pump, will have to float a loan to pay for it. Gosh, just didn't realize what kind of current we were pulling.
Went out this morning for a garden walk, and have some beautiful glads blooming. Never thought that I would see blooms this year, as they were planted way late. So I will have quite a show next year. I did a trade in early July, and thought I was getting a few glad bulbs, and this person ended up sending 50 bulbs.
Well, gonna get ready for bed, tomorrow is a busy day, and I need all the "beauty rest" I can get. DH says that it is probably a lost cause!! Hope you all have a good restful night.
DeFoe hope foot is so better. I'am always barefoot drive that way..i know i know illegal. I hope there is not a lot of people infected.. They may try figure out who??lol..
Sheila i will keep the calico one if no goodhomes the others to will not "kick " them out.lol..
Ann glad back safe sound i wan to see pictures to.
kooger hope surgery is no problem to recovery speedy....
everyone ~~~~~ hope all are well or mending.. that is to say getting better..
took 2 pills 2 hours ago so now going to try to really go to sleep but be tv probably till 4 or 5 as usual.
i also forget what i read so miss things..sorry
Twyla
Greetings all,
Happy Birthday to Pati and welcome home to V-ann.
I'm afraid that once again I'll have to leave you all with a hi and bye. I'm waiting for DH's cake to be done and think that I will just hit the bed after that. I'll have to get up early to continue the cooking marathon for his birthday party tomorrow.
Stay well and have a restful night.
Here's the link to tomorrow's thread. See you there!
