I also have radar ears. I can't wear them for long periods any more, but they make things quiet. I get....agitated at too many noises, like on airplanes. I got to the point, when I still went out to clubs and dancing, that I wore them 'cause the music was too loud. Once, when I substituted for the band teacher, I was really glad I always carry them! (a pair in the glove box, one in my toiletries bag, one in my fanny pack, in my suitcase....) The silence calms me down. Even helps my own yammering brain to clam up!

Denver can sure get cold, WH, this I know from personal experience. I lived in Montrose for 10 years and did a few shows/flea markets/fairs over there. Once, during an antique show at Currigan Hall (am I remembering the name right?) in January - it was 7 below zero. The heater had gone out in our cabover camper. Oh my! Fortunately, I had a friend who let us plug into his apartment for a space heater at night, but I worried for the dogs in the camper during the day.

4 paws...i hate hearing what i hear...i can hear noises that no one else can and it drives me and them crazy....i don't wear plugs as i said cause they hurt except in Xtreme circumstances....i turn on a fan for 'white noise' as my noise machine has this extra click noise every so repitition of sound and that drives me crazy......i know i sound like a nut and probably am...but would love to not hear....once i could hear this sound....i would move around the house and it was coming from my wall of my bedroom....but i would go outside and hear nothing....hubbie thought i was losing it....and went to bed(in another room)...the pitch of the noise was driving me nuts ....so i get back up and get him up and said we have got to locate that noise....it is driving me nuts....(for some ungodly reason if i can locate the noise then i am fine....but, if it continues and it is a certain pitch i can not think , rest etc)....so i drag hubby outside at 10 pm.....he steps in water....WELL, come to find out a pipe had busted and for some reason it made a different noise than running water....he turned off the water and the noise went away....but we would have had a flood had i not heard it...

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Hey, we're both nuts then. Also I am very sensitive to smells. Once in CO, where we had solar electric backed up by generator, and propane fridges, I swore I could smell something toxic burning. My then-partner sort of blew me off, but I kept sniffing around. Sure enough - out in the travel trailer where we had a propane fridge, someone had left a gas lantern on hanging a few inches from the ceiling (city people visitors!) and it was burning!

Back then, I could hear a power strip that wasn't turned off.

Now we have a regular house with new, but noisy fridge. I have a noise machine too - I set it on ocean waves. When I sleep outside, I don't need it, 'cause I'm sleeping only with the dogs. I recognize various critters, and the neighborhood dogs. Outside animal/nature noises don't seem to bother me, but inside and human noises do. I have to figure out how to sleep outside in the winter, too. Except then folks will be burning trash full-bore in their woodstoves and that will kill me.

i can't even sleep with the ocean waves setting......the noise ebbing and floing isnt consistent noise therefore my brain anticipates the next noise.........arrrrrgghhhh; i have had to change hotel rooms as many as 3 in one night due to noise...elevator, heater that clicked, child crying........wish i could have normal hearing

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

That's really rough, sticks! The real ocean isn't restful to me, but for some reason these wave sounds are....maybe because they are predictable.

I'm glad your husband backs you up.

i can't sleep unless Law & Order is on.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

ruby....i have even branched out to the birkies that are the tatamis....they are more fashion forward....with the same foot care....have you tried those?

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

It's good to know that I'm not the only one with super hearing. I *hated* living in an apartment because of all the noise. Boom boxes, TVs, crying children, arguments, doors slamming, more boom boxes. People would tell me "just ignore it," but I couldn't ignore it. I would use a fan for white noise, and I used to have to wear ear plugs at work because this one idiot kept his boom box on with that awful bass beat. I once went over and politely asked him to turn it down, and after that he decided to target me. He complained about me daily and kept trying to get me fired. I caught a cold last spring, and he demanded that I be fired because all of that noise from my coughing was making him not be able to do his work, and I was preventing him from making quota, and he was going to lose money because of me, and I'd force him into foreclosure and he'd lose his house. And I was infecting him with all my asthma germs, and he was going to have to go to the hospital and he'd lose his job because of me. And it was all my fault because I was purposely coughing at him!

But he kept his boom box going constantly (that noise didn't bother him) and kept bragging on the phone to people about all the employees that he'd gotten fired.

And it was a little sniffly, coughing cold.

I really like living in a house. Generally, all I hear are the crickets outside, or my cats chasing around inside. For the first time in years I actually don't need the fan on to sleep.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

white...aaahhhhhhhh; so glad you have relief from noise.....; i live close to a retail location so there is no hope for my situation.....i just try to not pay attention which is very hard to do.....sigh

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

Oh, btw, our team moved to a different part of the building, so I don't have to put up with the office bully anymore.

Some noises I can put up with. I live a couple blocks from two busy streets, so I hear traffic noise, but that kind of fades into white noise. And I'm a mile from a hospital, and from a fire station, so I hear sirens. But frankly I'm glad to live that close to emergency services.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

white...was i reading in another forum that you have seasonal affective disorder also?? i suffer from it....and need lots of sun....i am just wondering if there is a connection with that and the noise thing etc etc

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

sticks, I'm wearing tatamis right now. I think those are the best of the line for me.

Congrats on a house, White H. I could never go back to an apartment.
Poor sticks! I would be in very bad shape if I were in your situation.

ruby42, I tried birks about three years ago. I had to wear orthodics in other shoes, and it was hard to find them to fit. I was also having a terrible time with my left heel. I got a cortisone shot in it (OOOOOOOWWWWWW!) and it was better for a few months, but then it got bad again, and sometimes I'd have to use a cane to walk. So, I decided to get a pair of birkenstocks on eBay. They made such a difference.

Unfortunately, I've yet to find a closed pair that work. I tried workboots, but they were impossible to put on after a while. Then I got a great pair of tall, fashion boots (I was so thrilled!), but they murder one ankle (same one that has the finicky foot). Anyone a size 41N?

:-)

SAD?
Wow, what a co-oincidence. Me too. Here is especially rough in the winter with all the rain. AZ was good. CO too, but here and upstate NY, 'way low!

Maybe we are very sensitive folks.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

i am a 40 to 41 n.....and have heel spurs too....i had to do the orthotic thing too....that is when i was working in the real world and had to wear good looking shoes....now that i work for me well....it is birks all the way and yes i love tatami....i rarely have to go back to the orthotics altho sometime i do for professional looking dress....as for a closed pair....i bought a couple last year that i will be testing out next week....i work for clinique part time and can't wear open toed shoes....so i will try the closed toed shoes ....try to remember to let you know how they work...

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

you all need to try zappos.com for shoes. you have 365 days to return unworn shoes and when you place an order, you get it in 2 days. you can read customer feedback and you can look at the shoe close-up from all angles. i'm telling ya, they are the best. also, when you send a pair back, they credit your card within days.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

4 paws...i think there is so much about the mind body spirit that isn't researched....and i DO think there is a huge connection with alot of the different things.....i need SUN....if i don't get it i go into hybernation mode....i might as well kill myself.....but have to live thru it....i dread the winter;

as for another connection ....i rescue cats....we have about 20...but the population ebbs and flows based on whom i can and cant get spayed and neutered....our city is primarily impoverished people who don't spay or neuter...so alot of unwanted animals...they dump the cats in the country....very sad, so i do what i can....and what funds will allow

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

i hate to spend full price for shoes...i get mine on ebay and generally half....i am not a fashion plate so i may buy 6 pair a year....with ebay i can buy more...i am very hard on my shoes...

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Wow, almost another me living somewhere! I have one cat, who chose me when there were about 15 dogs here, at least half little bitty puppies. Her name is Radar, and she trains the dogs to be good to cats before they go to new homes. This is an Indian reservation, so similar situation. I work with a non-profit on the coast for discounts on surgeries, and hopefully get reimbursed for some of the costs when the dog is adopted (three great adoptions in August!)

I wrote on the calendar that I was "hibernating" from Dec 21 - late Jan. and that's that. I'll see how it goes.

Tracks, I'll take your advice and give a look at the zappos, and see how they are, especially with that kind of warranty.

Sticks, we ought to trade plants for boots...lol

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

i for sure need plants...but i don't have boots....only shoes....will keep you posted....

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

I lost that last post somewhere, and there it was (after I wrote it again).
Well, I have boots that are just storage...lol
I have some plants, too.

Yes I have tried tatamis.... and probably evey other pair they sell! I were White Boston's or London's to work (dr's office) everyday and with all the miles I walk in 1 day my feet feel GREAT!

You know Birkenstock does sell BOOT'S and guess what I just happen to own a pair of them too!!!!

I will NOT pay full price for them, and since I found e-bay a few year's back that is the only place I have been buying them! I am waiting for a new pair of tan Betula clogs to arrive anyday. BRAND NEW off ebay and under $20.00! (WHAT A BARGIN)

I will go find the seller's name and put it here! ( websbestdeals ) is the sellers name.

Another seller I have bought several pair from is: ( theshoeplanet )

shoeplanet is one I'm a regular of.
maryclimoges as well.
Under $20 is pretty good, that's for sure. I'm coveting amythest suede Bostons, but I won't pay more than $35 including shipping, so I'll put it on a gift list for my DH (help eliminate the dead plants from the local, tiny, grocery store)

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

I actually tried a pair of Birkenstocks, but they weren't comfortable for me. If I don't just go barefoot, I wear Nikes or Sauconies or, lately, Crocs knockoffs.

I'm still not entirely unpacked from the move. Most of my stuff is still in boxes in my garage, including my full spectrum light. I'll have to get it out of there by the end of this month.

The first time I tried full spectrum lights during a Chicago winter, the difference was enormous. I wasn't sick. I wasn't depressed. I actually felt like living.

I know some people are just more sensitive to environmental input--light, sound, etc. I'm really happy now to have a garden and a quiet house for me and my cats.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

free shipping both ways on zappos also!

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Good for you, White (:-)
I love to go barefoot, but my back just hates it, and my back rules. So birks are the next best thing. They were rather uncomfortable at first for me, too.
I have full spectrum lights, too. They helped a lot in WI, but not here.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

zappo's is great. The only prob is you can spend days and day looking at shoes they have so many.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

4paws...sell your boots on ebay that you can't wear...then you can get your amethyst bostons.....as for your comment....dead plants at the local grocery store...what were you referring??

rubi...i am waiting anyday for a pair of tatamis to be delivered...never worn..31.00 kinda wicker top....i hope that doesnt kill my feet...but they are ever so cute

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

whiteh...what do full spectrum lights do?? i may need them...where to get??

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

track anastasia...will have to look into zappos...

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Sticks, the dead plants comment was rather vague, eh? When my "D"H doesn't remember a birthday or other holiday (after all, they are all such a surprise!), he brings home some plant from the grocery store that doesn't have much hope of survival, but he thinks gets him off the hook for thoughtlessness. I'll email him the shoes on ebay, and maybe he can get them in advance....

(He is not so nice to me about my idiosyncracies.)

Amazon.com is at the top of my list for used and new books and CDs. I wear a small size so clothing is iffy for online shopping, although I did pick up two great blazers on Ebay. Ann Taylor Loft and Liz Claiborne in size 4 usually fit so I search for those brands. I even found brand new bedroom curtains in an odd length on Ebay for a fraction of store cost.

I do some aromatherapy work and Nature's Gift (www.naturesgift.com) has been my resource for years for organic and wildcrafted essential oils. It's a lovely site to browse even if you don't use those products.

This thread made me realize how few, if any, printed catalogs we receive anymore. It's no wonder since we do so much shopping online. My husband buys everything from work pants to computer parts to car parts and accessories. I buy books and CDs, office supplies, household appliances, software and art supplies, and occasional clothing items. We even just ordered two new Dell computers, two monitors, a new scanner and some camera accessories online. We Google first for whatever we want, and then decide based on price, vendor ratings and shipping costs. We usually avoid sales tax by ordering online which is a big plus. Online shopping saves a lot of time and frustration. I think though that the time we save is spent browsing more online catalogs!

The paper catalogs still come here, and I'm not happy about ebay's catalog!! Same for Amazon. It seems to take quite a lot of time to get them to stop sending them.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

4 paws...do ebay and amazon have catalogs??

as for forgetting things i am the one.....hubby is so good about it and really puts alot of thought into his gifts.....(last minute)because he does wait till last minute he spends way too much on gifts(which bothers me cause i could spend that money on so many more things.....but he does buy good stuff)

Sticks, I got mine from Northern Lights online. I think that's the name. Google "full spectrum lights" or "broad spectrum lights."

Cheapo way: go to a pet store and get one of the lights meant for birds or herptiles. Or go to a gardening supply place and get a plant light. Get the flourescent, though, instead of incandescent. The incandescent ones get HOT, and I think they're dangerous.

Then get a timer and set up the light to go on in the morning, maybe from 6 to 8. That's most important. Some people set it up to go on in the evening, too, from 5 to 7 or thereabouts. Basically what it does is extend the winter day to summer hours.

I *really* have to find mine!

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

white hy...my regular waking time is around 9 am....AND i am under floresent lights till 9 pm at night....do i need one of those lights?
