i'm just curious to see if i'm missing out on anything. i love catalogues and i shop online because it saves time and i live a fair distance from great shopping meccas.
online, i love Zappos for shoes and Amazon for everything else.
one of my favorite catalogues is Ballards. oh, i love Anthropologie too.
favorite non-gardening catalogue and/or shopping website?
I don't do much shopping on line but really like Fantes. They are based out of Philidelphia and have great kitchen stuff...if I can't find it here in town I look there. They also have a wealth of information on the site (product care, recipes ect).
i've never heard of that one-thanks! i love kitchen gadgets.
Welcome, I've always been happy with my purchases and even do a little gift shopping from them. I'm gonna check out yours also.
I have fun w/ Coldwater Creek. Very reasonably priced womens wear, not high end but gets me thru. I receive catalogs from J Jill (?)more women's wear but never ordered from them.
I like Sierra Trading Post, Amazon (esp. Friday sales), Nordstrom (Wednesday sales, under $30, search by size, post season...lol)-sizes fit me better than Coldwater Creek.
Amazon clothes sale on Fri? and Nordstrom on line or at their stores for Wed sales?
coldwater creek doesn't have my size, but j.jill has some that fit me. their stuff is made well too. nordstroms is great for shoes and boots, but they can't beat zappos customer service.
Sorry to be confusing.
I can't wear most shoes, so I stick with buying new birkenstocks on ebay.
Sierra Trading Post has clothes, gear, home stuff, some pet stuff. I've been shopping with them since 1991, online for at least half that time. They are a good source for Birks and other good shoes. I've purchased turtlenecks, silk underwear, excellent socks (socks are very important in my winter wardrobe-I love my Bridgedale thigh high socks!), great coats/jackets, camping, hunting, fishing, climbing equipment, etc. from them. Yesterday I purchased 31 collars and 25 leashes of solid quality for a total of $127. I usually buy when they are offering free shipping, or other discounts. (I'll sell the collars for a bit more, but still under retail, at a Christmas time bazaar to raise a little money and awareness for the dogs that come through here (rescue)). STP has excellent service and a forever return warranty that they truly honor.
Nordstrom online (I don't think I've ever been in a store)--on Wednesdays they have new stock added to their sales, but the sale items stay on sale for the duration. They have a search option "under $30," which is where I start, then I sort by size. Usually it is after season stuff, like my wonderful corduroy dresses and jumpers that were $20-30 each. Also they have $5 shipping. I think free sometimes if you order shoes. Since I'm not working in public much right now, I don't need particularly nice clothes, so I don't visit Nordstrom much.
Amazon does have clothes, but I don't look for clothes there. The Friday Sale is only on Friday. On the Amazon home page there is a subcategory "today's deals". If you click on it and scroll down, you'll find the Friday Sale link.
Amazon purchases for me over the years have included: laundry and dish liquids (Seventh Generation), assorted groceries, microwave, burr coffee grinder, telephone, answering machine, label maker, flashlights, my KitchenAid mixer and other assorted appliances, flannel sheets (Wamsutta, excellent quality $20/set), household items, movies, etc. from Amazon. I usually buy when there is a discount, besides shipping, offered. For example, until midnight tonight, Amazon is offering $10 off purchases of $49 in grocery on select items. That's great for me for some things, because there's no shipping, no lugging from the store, no tax. I've stocked up on maple syrup (real), Orvilles' popcorn (DH likes), whole green chilies, toilet paper, etc. In June, one offer was $30 later on any purchase totalling $90 on certain household products (that's when I stocked up on Seventh Generation laundry soap, fabric softener, dishsoap, dishwasher soap, paper towels, and toilet paper). All those things would have had a 7.5% sales tax and have been heavy to carry home.
lol
I should work for Amazon! And Sierra.
4paws, you sound like me! i've purchased books, cds, vacuums, tools, crock-pots, gloves, garden supplies, headphones for the tv and a host of other things on amazon. if it's direct through amazon, it's free shipping and if it's not, well, it's still the easiest way to shop. they have everything you could ever want, tax free.
Oh dear you folks are giving me ideas!
LOL
I buy my cd's and books, all used, via Amazon. I get great cd's for a fraction of the cost of new. Sometimes they are radio station demo's that were never opened or maybe someones Christmas present. And I just ordered 2 used books, $1.60 for one and $4 for the other.
oh, yes, used books are wonderfully cheap and most of the time they are like new. the seller usually tells you the condition, so you can pick from the best one. i just bought a new pooper-scooper. it's not used! LOL, or at least it wasn't, it is now.
my first place to look if i wanna save money is ebay....i look up pretty much everything that doesn't weigh alot on ebay....then i go from there....i do buy books, dvds, cd's on amazon most of the time; of course i have all my gardening catalogs to drool over when i am in a gardening mood.....
how could i forget ebay? LOL i've received a lot of great things from ebay over the years. in fact, in 4 hrs. i may be getting something else! LOL
trackin....don't you just love it?? ....do you use bidnapper?? i subscribe to it....i feel it is a must for ebay and getting what you want....
oh no, don't tell me there is something i don't know about with ebay. what is bidnapper? and do i really want to know? lol yes, yes, i want to know!
Do any of you check out Norm Thompson? Out of Portland and beautiful clothes.
bidnapper is a bid sniping program that bids the last 4 secs of the auction......that is the only way i bid now....i have used it for about 2 yrs....it gets the emotion out of buying....i don't have to get sick at my stomach anymore or count down minutes......bidnapper does it all for me....they have a trial thing that you can try it for 5 free bid snipes....bidnapper.com
that's what i thought it might be. you know what? i can't do that. i know other people do it and it's perfectly fine, but i can't. i would end up buying way more than i need. i set limits for myself and if i get outbid, that's the way it goes. if it's something i really want, i bid high, but not so much anymore. there's only so much one person needs and i'm trying to find that spot! lol
i've heard of Norm Thompson. i will have to check it out. maybe i'm thinking of Hunter. what kind of clothes do they have?
I couldn't do the bidnapper thing either...and I rather like the last minute excitement of the auction when I may or may not win.
I've also sold a few things on Amazon that they sell. I didn't get them there, but it's easy enough to list since they've got a photo and description of the item on hand. In my case, it was some LeCrueset cookware. Sold fast.
Half.com is where I look for books.
Ebay used to be where I bought everything, but I've slowed down. We were doing a lot of remodel work, and I bought ceiling fans, kitchen cupboard handles, electrical outlets, bathroom exhaust fan, light fixtures, latches, hinges, etc. etc.
Clothes I cannot even consider shopping for at this point! I've reasoned that if I own it, I'll wear it, then I have to wash it. Then, I have to put it away, and there's the rub. No closets in this house.
Amazon, definitely, although mostly for media stuff -- books, CDs, movies, especially used. I have a long wish list, and when the price drops on something I want, I nab it.
And ebay. I've found out that I can wear size 6.5 Nike, Saucony, and Merrill, so if I see a deal on any of those shoes, I bid on it. I also like to buy earrings on ebay.
(Edited to say that I also buy a lot from LL Bean, now that I know their stuff fits me well.)
I've shopped at Toscano's and Signals, though haven't bought yet. I've also been to a couple of cooking sites.
And a dozen or two gardening sites....

Now you've tempted me, anastatia and I had to look - a first glance (and I should only glance), the front page is very similar to nordstrom.com
oh dear...they have tall sizes....and I was just going to sleep! lol
These folks make WONDERFUL clothes. Not exactly high fashion, but I like them a lot. Solid, handmade, excellent fabric, they'll send you samples (or at least, they used to). I've got clothes from them that I've worn regularly (in season) for seven or eight years, and they still look good.
www.devalifewear.com
I forgot about this place. 40% off designer clothes. So your $500 dress is only $300 or your $60 t-shirt is on $36 and you can wear it gardening! http://www.bluefly.com/
...I'm too cheap to spend $36 on one shirt, usually, and if I do, it better last a long time and I won't wear it gardening. :-)
When my shrubs are grown and various screens are in...maybe I won't need a shirt for gardening....hehehehehe
thanks for reminding me about bluefly. i don't think i will be gardening in a 300 dollar dress. i usually do wear a dress though, a long one to keep bugs off my legs! i get the ones with spaghetti straps.
Me too, tracks, I usually wear dresses or skirts, and have several with the spaghetti straps. I use those as a second layer under winter dresses when it's really cold in the winter, too.
in the winter i go more for flannel pj's. i'll bet we are a lovely sight! lol
Nightgowns...flannel nightgowns and sheets, and I have the best warm socks! (who is looking? or better...who cares? lol)
i see you're a zone above me, so you do get a little colder than i do. i freeze when the temps drop below 70, but i still look forward to it every year!
4 paws i am with you on a couple issues...if i wear it then i have to wash it....then i have to fold it...then i am only going to get it out and do the same thing again.....what a hassel
i mainly wear t shirts(white) shorts, linen, in the summer...in the winter it is jeans or khakis, t shirts white, cashmere sweaters....
i am so wierd cause i will not spend 36 dollars on a t shirt when i can buy them (they have to be 100% cotton...hanes)...i get them for 4.36 on a website ....i wear my food so i destroy my white t'shirts...anyway, i wear huge scarfs in the fall....so i will pay 50 to 75 dollars a scarf for ysl, ungaro, escada scarfs go figure....and wont spend 36 on a t shirt.....
i wears hats most of the time cause i drive a convertable...i will pay up to 100 for a hat.....frank olive, javits, gilly forge....yet, look for used birkis...but will pay 50 for birkis on ebay....am i goofy or what
lol
I don't buy used birkies, my back and feet would be angry. Big time. They have the final word in fashion, since they make me go. :-)
Love hats! Absolutely! And gloves.
Love scarves, and yes, I'll pay more for a scarf/shawl, but I always have to find a deal. I always carry a scarf. It is one of the things most essential to travel, too, with a bit of essential oil on one end in case I find myself in a ... well, an aromatic situation. lol
(A sweet scented scarf, earplugs, handkerchief, and water...gotta have 'em)
4 paws....i used to wear only dana buchman scarfs....they are about 42 x42...well i decided that is too small for me as i am a big gurl...14 -16....now i am wearing 52 x 52 scarfs ....love that silk wool flowing .....
you said:
A sweet scented scarf, earplugs, handkerchief, and water...gotta have 'em
do you carry all the above with you everyday??
i love the skinny scarves for wrapping up my neck in the winter, but not the really long ones. i'm short and i trip over them. i have 8 or 9 hats, mostly winter ones and then i have my "old man" white cotton gardening hats. i look like i'm ready to play golf with Bob Hope. my big thing is capes and panchos. always loved 'em, always will.
uhmmm...yes. Though it's been so hot, the scarf has stayed in the truck, unless I go to the coast. I keep earplugs & handkerchief in my fanny pack (which is my "purse"), and I always carry water, 'cause I almost always have a dog with me, but also when I don't. Basic survival and all.
I never wear dresses or skirts, or shorts. I have ugly legs, and I don't want to show them off. For the most part, I either wear my gi pants or jeans.
I also don't wear any kind of PJs. It's just me and the cats, so who cares?
And I wear tee shirts. I have possibly 100 in my closet, and I just ordered two organic cotton ones.
I do have hats because when it's cold and/or windy, it gives me a headache. I have several baseball caps and a couple bucket hats, and several knit caps for winter (which I'd better find in the next couple of months).
ok...so why the ear plugs.....i know i am noise challenged.....i have 'radar ears' i have been told....can hear too much...but plugs hurt my ears
