What's Growing - Part 9!!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

they don't self-seed, but they are perennial :0)

Hi, John. I love elephant ears. Wish they were perennial.

Top left is standing on top of the hill looking back at my house.
Top right is standing in the same spot looking down the field. Where the field looks like it ends...it actually drops down a hill a ways before it hits the woods. The "greener" spot in the middle is where we will be building the log home, below that will be the pond.
Bottom left is where the deer have been laying down at night. The tall grass around the circle is about 5 ft. tall..the rest is about 20".
Bottom Right are black eyed susans growing wild in the field.

Very pretty pixie! It looks relaxing.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I picked up 3 plants....paid under $4.00 I got 2 Gazania one is yellow and the other one is maybe red, rust or maroon....not sure, no tag but the bud on it is dark reddish. I also got "Helen Dianthus" it is peach colored. I will have to keep the gazania's alive all winter in the house....Now thats a challange! Can't resist a bargin plant!!!!

I have read 2 different things about Gazania's. First one place said they were annuals the other said they were perennials. Anybody know which one is right??

The first dahlia has a second bloom!

Pixie, you just keep plantin' those daylilies! you're never gonna run out of room ;0) Nice views. What happens to your house when you build your log home...one of the kids?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

one last pic...my mums are off and running!

Gram ~ My oldest son is handi-capped and this house was built around his needs. The entire 1st floor is made for a wheelchair to be able to go anywhere he needs to. He is not in a wheelchair full time but it helps when he needs to use it. There are 5 rooms downstairs and 5 upstairs.
My youngest son has no intentions of moving out. LOL He is one of those kids that doesn't like change...ever! When he was 6 his teacher was sick and he had a substitute...the school called me at 8:15 am..Josh wanted to come home. His Father & I changed his room around one day while he was at school he was 10 years old. That night at 9 pm when he should of been sleeping we heard furniture moving around up there...he was putting his room back to how it was. So I guess this house will be the 2 boys!! LOL

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Pixie, I love that mum! knew it was gonna be a beauty.

you guys are killing me with those dahlias. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get some in the spring (no more lazy gardener)

all those boys need is a housekeeper and they're set for life LOL

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

They have 3 sisters...none of them can stand messy boys so no house keeper needed!

Beachwood, OH

Pixie!! You sound just like me 2 years ago - lol. My girlfriend has a wholesale license and we put together an order with our garden club and went up to Bluestone Perennials and bought $850 worth of plants - perennials were $1.15 each and shrubs were around $2.10. I had flats and flats of plants that took me all summer to get in the ground. I want to see pics of that Uchida next year. You'll have to report on what you thought of the sellers.

Now on to an Off-Topic but worthwhile never the less. You can vote for free at the weblink or send in the yogurt lids if it suits you. Getting kids involved in gardening would be great.

Stonyfield Farms is contributing between $20,000 and $60,000 to the National Gardening Association to support their Adopt a School Garden program.

Never heard anything about gazania being perennial - maybe zone 9 ;)

Gram - I'll help you cheat, when you do a second edit you can delete the first edit message on the post.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Al, I am shocked and disappointed that you think I might cheat...and... I will remember that next time LOL (gettin' even for the entymology/etymology thing?)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Gram ~ I am familar w/that site...been eyeing "Stones" for a week now!!!
I have the "Buff Pixie" and the "Pink Pixie" ...no "Peach Pixie" YET. I have or had Touching somewhere, love my Black Beauty and you saw what Lollypop does is 3 years! Have heard wonderful things about Gran Paradiso so I think you have a lovely selection there!
Strawberry Shortcake is small like the Pixie's collection, short and robust. So is my Starfighter and a few others I have, that the names of just left my brain. LOL

Aly ~ You can drive to Bluestone? Lucky You!! I have been going through the book every day trying to finalize an order with them. Can't decide what to buy and I have limited my self a set amount of $ this time!
As for the sellers..I have heard nothing but praise from DG'ers about Buggycrazy and B&D Lilies, and I am very careful when buying from ebay. But I will let you know what I recieve for sizes on the bulbs and if they bloom or not.
BTW I fully intend to go to that site and vote and then I am going to tell my niece about it so she can tell all her friends. (She has 6 kids..lots of Mom's are going to get an email from her!)

Al,
Your dahlia at work is beautiful. Even my husband, who doesn't have the gardening gene, said it's a stunning picture.

Pixie,
Yours are so pretty also.

Gram,

I agree--after seeing theirs, I want some dahlias too.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks Loretta

this is my favorite dahlia pic that's not mine LOL

Hi,
I am really new at gardening... and I really have been enjoying this site... so I decided to share what is growing too... just found this morning... not a very sunny morning here... but this made my day ...

(well, not only flowers are growing in my house this year... also 6 painted baby turtles!!!!!) lol

Thumbnail by Kassia
Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Hi Kassia - you have morning glories in your house and you paint turtles?

welcome to Daves and gardening

Al

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Kassia ~ Welcome! If you let it go to seed and drop...you should have more next year. It worked for me for the last 3-4 years.

Thumbnail by pixie62560
Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi, I love morning glories, but believe me that one was planted by my 5 year old nephew at school on a styroform cup... he was so proud... so we planted and it is beautiful... I have a basketball pole and I am going to adapt that to plant morning glory to go up the pole... I plan to keep some of the seeds...

Well, I haven't painted the turtles... I actually found 6 eggs as I was preparing a flower bed and I decided to rescue the eggs... and they are painted turtles... so cute... so they are also growing here!!!! one died and I buried next to the morning glories...

but this is also growing.... miniature roses!!!!
just bloming today!

Rain, rain, rain go away my tomatoes are about to explode. Welcome Kassia - I got tears in my eyes reading about your turtles.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, gram, we sure did get a lot of rain today. And wind. And it's freezing. I see that it's 55 degrees, but it feels much colder. Apparently it will be warming up again soon.

Kassia, I love your blog! The turtles, the flowers.....it was very enjoyable. Thanks for the link.

This is what's new in my garden this week.

Oh, the rain is coming my way... I got some stuff done today, but I filled my garage with my plants... didn;t want to take any chances with the wind... I lined up my mini roses against the wall so they don't get blown away...

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

The purple on this pansy was so dark this morning it just caught my attention. Normally it's much lighter than this...must be the cool nights.

Pixie - that is a sharp pansy alright.

Went to tend on my dahlias at work today. Here is a class photo for this year.
