Sambucus

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Here are a couple of photos of one of my several varieties of Elderberries. This one is Sambucus Quincho Purple. 1st the whole tree-shrub. Very vigorous. It was pruned severely this spring to try to keep it under control. Had lots of bloom and now there are several branches that are at least 15 feet tall. The birds love Elderberries. The Eastern Kingbirds have eatten all the fruit on the native one that I transplanted into the yard. It has the largest fruits and seems to be earliest to ripen. This morning there was one -only- Cedar Waxwing eating on the variegated Sambucus growing in front of my computer room window. A pair of Cedar Waxwings had a nest somewhere in the yard.

Hi Rutholive!!! Glad to see you're back. I was just wondering about you yesterday. Nice plant, btw.

Scott glad you liked the elderberry. I have been around but not too much with Shrubs & Trees. Today has been a really bad smokey day, yesterday was not bad. I just couldn't go outside very much, and now have to go can a few string beans.

Smoke from wildfires, or are they burning off grass seed fields or something?

The smoke is mostly from lightning caused wildfires. They are fighting the worst one the Tripod fire to the west of here, but mostly trying to keep the fire from burning close to towns. It has burned more than 134,000 acres so far. They said we would have smoke until fall when the rain(whatever that is) or snow smothers the fire.

Quoting:
rain(whatever that is)

That's a term they used to use a lot, back when we all saw it occasionally. Like other things from the good old days, few of us can even remember what it looks like now. Your fires are being covered on NPR as I type this. Current containment 48%, full containment not projected until 1 October! Not particularly encouraging . . .

I know rain well. We've had over 2" since Fri. It's rained everyday since Fri. Sort of took a break yesterday, mostly drizzle. But boy did it rain today. Last month we were begging for rain and now it won't stop.

Sorry to hear about the fires Donna.
