Coffee and..... for Tuesday, August 22

Millbury, MA(Zone 5a)

Good morning to all of my fellow caffeine addicts!

Pull up a chair, lets share the coffee and breakfast goodies with a good dose of the "daily news". What's been happening in your neck of the woods? We all want to know!

Here's where we came from: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/641855/

Waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Guess I'm officially the early bird this morning. Well good morning to all. Coffee is done and first cups aroma is heavenly.

Kinda cool out there this morning. Feels good.

Not much on my agenda today, so it'll be a play it by ear day. There is so much I want to do and .........I'm just lazy. I don't want to do anything but sit out by the pond and watch fish go round and round.

Yesterday I took all 3 of my Rudbeckia fulgida x Goldstrum off to the ground. They were still blooming but had a fungal disease and all the leaves were turning black and crispy. Ugly....so I cut it to the ground. I'd read in a couple of the books I have by Melinda Myers that good fall cleanup was the best defense against fungi. I really don' want to start using chemicals if I can avoid it. Although, I did break down and bought some Sevins for the jap beetles. It do anything though, didn't even slow them down. Shouldn't they be disappearing about now?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Good Morning. Sure wish I had my coffee pot here! Hot coffee sounds good about now. I have 2 coffee makers in storage so I cannot justify buying a third one. I awakened soaking wet and can't seem to get warmed up.

I have to say a quick good morning and scram out the door in a few minutes to meet a friend at the golf course. Don't have anything else planned for the day, except go feed the grandcats, and water the dry spots. Darius, boil up a pot of water and throw some coffee in it like the old timers used to do. If you have to keep the grounds out of your cup, use a hunk of paper towel and a funnel to strain it. Start a day without coffee? Unthinkable!

DH is hobbling into work today. I'm sure he will be the object of much good natured ridicule. Just like home.

~~~~ to all and heading for the shower.
Good Morning,
I have been awake since the dogs beckoned for their pee run. No....I don't run them, at that hour, they do it in the back yard on their own.
Night fore last I had the insomnia thing. I gotta figure out at what time of the day to stop drinking iced tea. (I know...decaf...later) So I tossed and turned that night and by morning when I went to stretch I pulled/pinched that muscle/nerve right between my shoulder blades. It was a little worse last night, although I did get some sleep this time.
I don't have time for this stuff, I need to get up on the roof, put another coat of paint up there and take care of any other caulking that needs to be done.
Artcons and his wife are stopping back by here today on their way back to Lauderdale. I have been trying to come up with some native plants that he does not have and some other unusual butterfly attractors that I know he also doesn't have. I think I am doing quite well.
Yesterday I notice the hardy water lily in my pond had disappeared. How does that happen? Ya don't know until you stick you arm down in shoulder deep murky water to find that pot. It got tipped over and I can't for the life of me figure out how that happened. My goldfish are not big enough to move a pot. I don't even want to think about what critter might have been trying to catch fish in there. Luckily, my pond is deep enough and I have enough foliage cover to protect my fishies. They all seem to be present and accounted for.
An update to the snakes: Looks like the moth balls in the shed and archid house are discouraging them from entering. As for the test of the moth balls around my tomato plants, it worked for one night then someone ate them. I'll just have to put the tomatoes in my herb garden by the house. Critters don't want to come that close to human and dog scent.
Well, one more cup of coffee then I am out getting this stuff done. TTYL
Just a quick Good Morning here too. Meeting twin sister in Lexington for a day of shopping. Had to kick the animals out this morning for a potty break, everybody is lazy here. Hope everybody has a good day, will check in later to tell you about my "great finds" at the mall.
Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)
Good morning. The sun is up and so am I, hubby's breakfast is cooking and I have a lot to do this morning before I have to head for town this afternoon.
Good heavens, Darius, get one at a thrift store for the interim. You're more frugal than I am and that is saying a whole lot.Got your shoes on?
The air was smokey yesterday afternoon and evening, but I'm not sure where the smoke was coming from since we don't have a fire closer than about 60 miles and it is over a range of pretty high mountains from us. Our winds were crazy last evening, swirling. We were sitting out on our porch with the wind blowing from the north at about 10mph and suddenly it quit, dead calm. A few minutes later I could hear the wind in the treetops and the branches of the tree in the yard were bending the other way. We were sheltered by the house so didn't hardly feel it, but then it changed and came from the east. We seldom get wind from the east. Later we had north wind again.
Molly, I know what happened to the moth balls. The mice have taken up bowling.
Defoe, have fun shopping.
Time to get moving, have a great day everyone. ~~~
Well the thing about the wake law are anything else that interferes with the rich and powerful is that in this state they will not pass laws against those people who are paying the money to line the pockets of the politicians. Anyone who wants to see what is can be like just go to your local video store and rent the video Party Cove. It is rated X so be prepaired.
In this country it is getting to the point where you have the gap between rich and poor is getting wider. We are going to wind up with all sorts of internel problems unless they cut out all this stuff. In the 30s when my people were abused by the coal mines there was nothing like terrorism. today however, we all know about it and you push on people enough and they will resort to it I am afraid.
Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)
Good morning folks,
Getting the hang of typing on my daughter's laptop. We have DH's computer along, but DD can't remember her wireless password; so it's use her computer or the Internet cafe. This morning we plan to do some more washing of window sills and baseboards and do some laundry for DD and ourselves. Little by little the boxes are getting unpacked and this place is beginning to look like a place in which someone could live.
It's a classic case of everything happening at once - the new house coming on the heels of their vacation and just before we took them away for a weekend in Portland. And we didn't see Mark till 10 pm last night because he was working on renovating the condo before they put it on the market. They had a dishwasher to install and test and tiling to be done in kitchen, entry and bathrooms. He's got a demanding job as a City of Vancouver engineer, so he's squeezing the reno time in at lunch and after work. Fortunately the condo is close to City Hall where he works.
I'll try out the hairdresser here this afternoon. Hope she's as good as reported, but I'm getting so shaggy it won't really matter much as long as it's shorter. Then this evening we'll have dinner with friends who used to live in Ottawa.
Hope you all have a great day and will try to check in later if time permits.
Ann
Hi y'all
Let's see now ... where to begin.
Ann, so glad things are working out for y'all and the cleaning is going ok. Hope you get a good hair cut and you like your new do. Isn't typing on a laptop hard to get use to? Boy, when we went on vacation, I had to take a regular keyboard because it was so difficult for me to find all those tiny keys ... plus I had to learn all new keystrokes for the talking commands. Decided it just wasn't worth the effort for a few days!
Defoe, hhope you find some good buys in Lexington. The DH went to that mall when he was up your way. He bought me a bottle of lemon olive oil that is ever so good. I was almost out of the one I had purchased in Montana. If you've never tried it ... it's wonderful! Of course, I know you're looking for clothes this trip, but if you ever feel like indulging ... it's worth it.
Mary, sure hope there's not anymore fires out your way. Your "end of the day" always sounds so relaxing sitting out there on your porch. Of course you certainly earn it with all you do, but it's such a pleasant picture in my mind's eye. :-)
Cece, I hope you have good luck with the remaining fish in your pond. Maybe you have things settled down now and they will thrive. I know it's going to be so much fun!
Molly, I hope moving your maters close to the house works for you ... but mine are in my back yard ... and we still had critters. LOL Of course you do have outside dogs. That will help you. Mine is an inside dog and only goes out to pottie. I found the squirrels liked to steal my moth balls.
Darius, I had an extra coffee pot. Wish I had known when you came through. What about those Folgers coffee singles? Yeah I know ... pretty disgusting. I like Meezers idea better. Put your shoes on! Remember ... you don't see good anymore. You have to wear your shoes!
oz ... you are right about there will soon be 2 classes in this country. That's why people are so discouraged and don't go to the poles and of course that's the wrong thing to do.
Maria, I haven't seen you check in this morning ... but saw where you still weren't feeling good so am ~ing at you and sending hugs your way.
sarv, where ever you are ... hope you are having a safe and wonderful time.
Mccool, thanks for starting this chatty thread for us every day. Hope you and your DH are getting your lives back in some sort of shape.
Has anyone heard anything from Twyla lately? Haven't seen her post in a while.
dmc, how's your hand doing this morning?
Babs, what about your Mum? If you have time to check in please know I'm sending hugs and prayers to you today.
Well, I've probably missed someone but this crowd has gotten so big ... I can't see the other end of the table and y'all get so loud down that way I can't hear either, so I'm just gonna wave as I leave the room. Hope everyone has a blessed day today!
Jeremy got the deer fencing up for me around my veggie garden, so I think I shall be putting my maters back inside of there. He buried the netting a few inches in the ground in case those wabbits twy to dig under.
Artcons was here and he says I should start some maters now. I should have thought of that, but the maters in the front haven't even died off yet. Funny, when I was in Lauderdale, end of May, first of June was mater dying time.
Okay, I got Bougies need repotting and Jeremy is calling to help. Better get it while I can,
Okay, have been wearing shoes since 8 am and my feet need a break. Plus, Brent has gone for a few hours. The pregnancy (sp?) test yesterday was negative but the doctor told them there is a 40% chance of error... so they are going again today for a better test.
VAnn, I've been here 2 months and still have dishes in boxes. Can't believe they are unpacking already.
Quoting:
LOL, I thought someone ate the moth balls!
Mary, you cracked me up about the mice bowling with the moth balls! (and I needed a good laugh!)
Oz, I agree that the money gap is widening and things will get tougher.
We did pretty good this morning in the barn for the short amount of time we had... got several floor joists installed. Photo is on the Limbo #3 thread. I left the window on the camper top open, it rained, and my tubes of liquid nails for the sub flooring are history. Guess I need to go to town for supplies later on. He starts back to school tomorrow so will only have an hour after school before supper to help me, and Saturdays.
I have to hit the road by 7:15 tomorrow morning for my TN trip for the ultrasound and bloodwork and still haven't found my alarm clock. Brent has promised to call and awaken me, don't know if I should count on that or not. Last time I needed to be up early, I asked my sister to call and she forgot so I had to reschedule that appointment. I used to be able to set my internal clock but I guess it has CRS too.
I thought someone DID eat the mothballs, they were no where to be found.
And if the mice took them for bowling, where is the alley?
I thought someone ate the mothballs, too...I had to re-read it...LOL
Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)
Hi again,
Taking a break. It occurred to me that the time on my posts will appear wrong as my time is set up for eastern time zone but I'm writing in Pacific. Will be even more wrong if I get a chance to post from Japan. LOL
So far this morning, we've washed most of the windows that we didn't get to yesterday. I've NEVER seen such dirty windows on the inside. They are still dirty on the outside, but I'd venture a guess they were dirtier on the inside than on the outside because rain washed off some of the dirt on the outside. Am on the third load of laundry. Did sheets for DD - I think they just moved them from the condo to the guest bed here to the futon couch that they are presently sleeping on but never had a chance to wash them. And we'd accumulated a couple small loads of laundry ourselves. There is a real old fashioned clothesline in their back yard but the pulleys are seized. With some effort it cam be made funtional. For now. there is just the electric dryer and a small folding one that is on the deck over their carport. Anyway, Their bed (futon) is remade, the window washed, the baseboards washed and loose stuff vacuumed.
Vacuums - she has the old Electrolux that I bought a few months after she was born - nearly 32 yrs old. I gave it to her when I bought a new one. it was still working but she had Electrolux overhaul it and it still does a real good job.
Darius, I venture to guess that there will still be things in boxes here for awhile, but they had us descend on them and next week Mark's parents and grandmother from Kitchener, ON will do the same thing. They need to have enough unpacked to be able to function. And they'd only been in the house 3 days when we dragged them off to Portland for the first weekend that they had the house. Both are facing stressful deadlines at work too; so I know they will appreciate every bit of help available.
DH has gone off to the hardware store. The curtains in the guest room were crooked because the screws were coming out. And we need a sink stopper. The metal one is in pieces and the rubber one we bougth yesterday was too big in spite of measuring. But I hear that the washer and dryer have stopped; so i guess I better bet going.
Back home again after a fruitless search for a caddy. Guess online will be the next order of business. Beautiful day.
I can't type well on my laptop either, have to watch what I'm doing every minute or it all comes our bskldirdjhgd ... ya know? Don't have much to say, uneventful day. Got the sprinkler going in spite of promises of rain tomorrow. I don't believe them any more. Cats are all sound asleep. Grandcats are fed, and plants watered. I don't believe my DIL. She put a cute little kid size truck on her deck, and put the plants in without adding any extra dirt to fill up the empty space and they dry out instantly. I water them anyway. Max still wont come to me. The other two are happy to see me and get some scritches and belly rubs.
Somebody come over and make dinner for me. I'm brain dead and sick of cooking. Maybe DH will limp out for a burger.
Hope everyone is feeling well and able to do the things they want to do.
Sheila
Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)
We just had a downpour of rain. Even though it's been 5 hours since we second coated the roof, we still got some paint run off, down the orchid house roof and the screening. Had to stand there with a hose washing the screen down.
I did get a little more time out putting some plants in that Art left for me before the sultry air drove me into the a/c in the house. He summed it up a 30 plants, wow, lots of work there. A lot of them are Fla native so they will go right into my native wildflower bed. That will be easy. Now I have to figure our how to get rid of the grass that got into that bed. Don't need grass in my wildflowers.
Having salmon filet for dinner then Jeremy is off to see his girlfriend for the evening. He's been kind of scarce since he found her and it's been kind of quiet around here. If I need him to do some heavy work or hauling stuff around, I let him know so he will come home and help me out. This works for me.
Finally a chance to sit and do nothing. Had to take MIL for her psych doc appt this am. She was a bit owlie but not too bad. You know when she answers "existing" to "how are you this morning?" That just rubs me the wrong way so she got a mini-sermon on how to answer people. Either you are sick or fine! LOL Usually she doesn't respond, she ignores me when she doesn't like what I tell her. But she didn't give the doc that so I was glad for that. He got the "as well as I can be" response. I can live with that. :)
Got her meds refilled and got her back to her apt in time for the communal dinner. You know how important that is!! Picked her back up at 1 pm and went to the county seat for her new ID card. Her old one expired in 01, oops! Now this one is good for life. And got my cycle licensed and grabbed an instruction book. Figured it's high time I got legal. Dropped her off and went with youngest DS to dentist appt. NO cavities, hurrah!
Now I have to wash dishes, the ants have invaded the dirty dishes. yuck!
till later all, Laura
Oh my goodness ... thanks for reminding me ... I need to get my ID card renewed!!
edited for a typo. Y'all * know * I can't spell! LOL
Wow, alot going on this morning and then nothing for the past couple of hours.
Work, was well work. LOL We are getting closer to being ready for the kids each day. I did type up a copy of the new dress codes. A few of the kids have already called in arguing when they received it in their mail. Anything to buck the system.
I had to renew my drivers license this year. I had planned on getting my SC while I was there but they made things so difficult that it just wasn't worth the fight. I renewed here by mail and got a sticker in return for the back.
Well I need to get outside and start working on the new dresser.
~~~~~'s to all.

Well, I swear I posted earlier, around 5:30. I guess it went poof.

Brent (who is not preggers with his GF!!) and I got nearly all the floor joists installed. Would have gotten them all in but he kept nailing the joist hangers on the wrong side of the line. Tomorrow is another day, except he will have limited time after school.

Casey, my sister and I saved $2600 per year in auto insurance transferring titles and tags to VA from FL. Same coverage, different company. Farm Bureau.

BBL, I hope.

Well I have been home for quite awhile, but had to do that supper thing, and Mr. B had to have his car ride, so just had to get that done first. He really likes going to see his grandmother (my DM), he goes in jumps in her lap, licks her face all over, explores the kitchen (looking for anything she may have dropped), then is ready to come home!! He is quite the stinker!!

Well, I couldn't believe my luck today. They had every summer item on sale, then on sale again. I got 2 tops one for $3.60, a camisole to wear with a suit for $2.60, some neat shoes (comfy ones) for $19.00 A summer sweater 3/4 length sleeves, it was $6.00 and a basic undergarment that wasn't on sale though! My sister could shop all day every day, I am one who goes when I absolutely have to go. Lunch was fabulous, a lump crab burger sandwich, awesome.

Well, I see that everyone has been busy today,
Darius, great news about helper not gonna be a father, you better instruct him to offer thanks every day for eternity. Close brush there.

kooger, don't you just hate negative people, being around them brings me down so fast. Good for your speech.

Molly, still am confused, did the moth balls disappear, or the tomatoes? I like Mary's theory of the bowling. LOL Hope there is enough paint left on the roof. So Jeremy has a GF, hope that is a good thing!

Viann, I am sure that your help there is appreciated. Don't tire yourself out so you won't enjoy Japan.

Mary, how did your adjustment go? Better, I hope.

Hi Hope, glad that you checked in, sorry for the tummy upset. Sending hugs and healing thoughts your way.

I01,, never heard of lemon olive oil, what do you use it for? Sounds like something that would be good with fish. May just have to explore that.

Meezer, no caddie to be found, so did you have to caddie and play? That's no fun. Good exercise though.

Carat, there is a dispute at a neighboring county high school about a new dress code there too. Every edition of the paper carrying letters to the editor about the unfairness, etc, etc. Anything to rebel.

Oz, it always seems that the laws are passed for the upper class, to provide all the breaks they can get. Doesn't matter about us lower class folks, who actually carry the SS burden for a large percent of people.

~~~ to earthling and kittymom, keep on lurking and just check in occasionally.
Gonna go finish a book tonight, but will bbl.
Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)
Although there are bites out of the cherry tomatoes, the moth balls are gone.
The moth balls are what I thought someone ate. I knew the maters were getting chewed on already, but they left some maters.
Tomorrow I shall work on that dilemma.
There is still plenty of paint left on the roof so no problem there.
Getting sleepy now, going to sack on the couch and watch some TV for a while.
Hi ... back for just a quick check in before I get comfy
Defoe ... that olive oil is yummy with pork, chicken and fish. I've got a pork tenderloin out to do tomorrow. Will sear it in the lemon olive oil, then sauté some garlic and shallots and add a little fresh lemon thyme and add the pork back into the pan and slip it into the oven to finish cooking.
Well, the DH had a meeting tonight and was late getting home so supper was late and I'm tired. Off to get a bath and hit the sheets. Hope everyone is able to get some sleep tonight.
No Caddy for the shower....thought I lucked out and found one at LNT, but when I got it home, I see that one of the shelf welds is broken. Geeeez Louise. I don't want to pay $100 for a darn old caddy, but all the over the door types are either made in China or super expensive.
Bonnie, I ride a cart, don't need a golf caddy! Besides, he might give me helpful instructions and confuse me.
And lucky me, DH walked...limped...in the door and said let's go out to eat.!! An hour earlier I was staring into the freezer and reciting "I don't want to cook that, I don't want to cook that either, I don't want to cook...period. "
Now I'm overstuffed and lazy. Going to say good night and hit the couch.
Okay, an early to bed night for me since I have to be on the road so early in the morning. I just hope ONE of my 2 wake-up calls responds since I still haven't found my alarm clock.
Say Goodnight, Gracie...
Darius, I have checked into insurance in SC and we also will be saving over 3000.00 a year and with a lower deductable.
Defoe, our dress code is set up for the safety of the students and staff. A rough shortened version is: White tee shirts, rounded neck, no pockets and plain. Khaki tan casual dress pants. Correct size, no bagging or sagging. Plain black cloth belt with tension control buckle. Black/white tennis shoes, white socks. No make up, hair products including gels and hairspray. No fake nails or nail polish. No typical or piercing jewelry of any kind. Any new piercings while attending is a mandatory 4 wk extention. Natural hair colors only. No braids, dreadlocks, highlights of unnatural colors, or dyes of unnatural colors. No hats, doo rags, bandana's or head gear. No cell phones, MP3 players, CD players or game systems. No sunglasses. All confiscated items are donated at the end of each school year to a non profit org. in the name of the attending students of that year.
Last years students donated over 5000.00 in just electronics alone. They just dont learn or listen. Really made alot of parents mad since most of the items belong to siblings. Both the students and parents must sign a contract during orientation or student can not be on campus.
Meezer, so glad that DH read your mind and took you out for dinner. DH made a pork noodle dish. Really good.
Time for my bath and off to bed. Darius, I would be happy to give you my alarm clock. Dang thing never fails to go off. Depresses me every morning.....
Hope all have a great night and a wonderful day tomorrow.
|M5, Oh, sorry for the confusion, a shower caddie was what you were looking for. Well, I suggest that you get a good cute young caddie for golf, just to "decorate" your space!! LOL. Good that you got to go out to eat, we did a very unhealthy supper, chicken nuggets and fries.
Darius I would volunteer to give you a wake up call, but depending on my sleep, may give you a call at 3:00 a.m. or 9:00 am.!! LOL.
Molly, thanks for clearing up the moth ball confusion. Maybe it is a myopic squirrel thinking he has a nut. If so he is gonna be real sick at some point during the winter. Liked Mary's theory of bowling though.
Well, packed seeds to send out tomorrow, all caught up now, until another request comes in.
Think I will try an early night tonight, and maybe will get going early for the grocery/errand day.
Have a good restful night.
Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)
Well, it will soon be time for me to lay myself down to sleep. It's already dark outside. I wish our long days would last longer, I can already see that we have lost about 45 minutes from just 2 months ago.
This morning I rode Patch for a couple of hours. As we were climbing a hill he was very interested in something, a buck deer with antlers in velvet had apparently been sleeping under a tree and we disturbed him. He went down through a gully and I didn't see him until he went up the hill on the other side. The day before we came upon 3 does sleeping under another tree, so now Patch thinks there are deer under all of them. There are very few trees out there where I ride, it is mostly sagebrush. Deer bed down in that too, and I've been seeing signs of elk but haven't seen any of them. I've been watching for more important things, snakes. Didn't see any.
Today's in-town errands included taking a lot of things to the recycling center, took the pickup to the dealership to have it serviced, walked down the street a few blocks to the chiropractor's office. He said I had a lot of tight muscles this time which made my bones harder to adjust. I feel a little bit achey tonight. After that I walked down a few blocks more to my hubby's office in the courthouse, sat a while and then walked about 8 more to the library after a stop at the dollar store to buy a cheap pair of reading glasses. Mine were in the pickup but I had almost reached the chiropractor's office when I remembered them, no time to go back to get them and by that time the truck would have been up on the hoist. My hubby picked me up at the library after I spent a relaxing hour or so reading, we went to get the pickup and then had dinner at the Chinese restaurant. He drove the truck home and I got the car, went to our local discount store and then to get a few groceries, got home about 7:15, put away the groceries and things, fed the horses and sat down.
Elaine, the pork loin sounds very good the way you cook it with the lemon olive oil. I might have to try that sometime.
Darius, I would guess that close call will keep those kids rather subdued in their relationship, or if they have any sense, it should. A good scare is worth a thousand words. Drive safely tomorrow.
It's time to put myself to bed. Brain cells are too tired to have much effect on the fingers.... Goodnight.
Millbury, MA(Zone 5a)
Good evening all,
It's getting pretty late (except for our night-owls ---- are you out there, Maria?) I've been working since I got home from the store and didn't get a chance to check in earlier.
Today has not been my day. Got out of bed and headed for the bathroom, but upon rounding the corner of the bed, SCRRUUNNCHHH! I knew immediately that I had just stepped on my glasses (which I'd apparently set down on the bed last night and forgotten). Luckily, I didn't break the lenses, just bent the frames all out of shape. We were double lucky too in that the eyeglass place near my store fixed them for free. Phew!
DH's feet have been "twingeing" again. I sure hope that doesn't mean that he's having a set-back. We're both getting really tired of this state of affairs. He has another appointment with the podiatrist a week from tomorrow.
Sorry for not responding to everyone, but I have read all the posts. I just do need to get to bed! Back in a minute with the link to tomorrows thread.
