Morning folks,
And hello to any night-owls who are lurking here! Here's the link to yesterday's thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/640924/
Coffee and . . . . for Saturday, August 19th
Good going McCool, sorry that you are not feeling better. A couple of crappy days, but do you realize how long that is. Hope you are better soon, and please both you and Maria, keep that crud north, as I surely don't want to encounter it, this early at least.
Night all.
Goodness, I am the early bird today. I really need to rest today as my back problems are getting worse and worse.I have an Rx for 800 mg. ibuprofen but even taking 2 of those just barely gets me comfortable. However, no rest for the weary. Today I am meeting like-minded fools to clean up a house that is close to 188 years old, as best we can figure. It's going to be nasty work as it has been abandoned, after being used as apartments, for about 50-60 years. I think this job is going to be a gross-out but I am not very sensitive to indelicate proceedings, so perhaps I can handle it when I get to the worse stuff, like dead rats.
I will probably only last an hour or two of light -duty stuff, but that's better than suffering for a week. I hope to get some pix and if I do, I will post one here.
Morning everyone- to is SO humid here - you can cut the air with a knife . Any activity is sure to cause a drenching of sweat...Think I'll lay low today!!
Wood - if your back is bothering you - quit cleaning...just supervise. Why are you cleaning up an old house?
M5- yum any sub sounds good to me!! In fact I'd like one right now- I have nothing that sounds good for breakfast- oh wait a minute - I do have some Eng muffins...Wish DH would get out of the sack and make me an egg McMuffin! I love meeting my friends for coffee, but few of us are golfers - just talkers..
Darius- I second the getting a cd player. I would nod off and hit the ditch if I didn't have something to listen to. As it is, I have to munch and get out and walk often. I take it Brent didn't go with you...too bad. Glad to hear that Gracie is stitch free _ we"ll call you the "cat whisperer" I can't remember a thing I had to memorize in HS...
IO!_ what a fun time going to see Elvis!! And going back stage and getting his autograph. What a nice DH you must have...would he give lessons??
Kooger- ouch- I'll pass on the plumbing stuff...Had the hose up the arse a couple of years back. Wasn't near as bad as I thought it would be, but sure wouldn't want a yearly one of those. We haven't had a bad storm here all summer. A couple of wind things blew thru, but nothing awful - thank goodness...Seems like our weather is moderating - summer and winter. I'd like to have one of those snowy, shut down the roads winters. I remember years ago we had snow bank so tall you couldn't see cars pass down the road....them was the good ole days!
Well, something bit me yesterday and I have scratched myself raw - need to go take a look at it and see what I can do.
Hope everyone's crud is leaving them pronto!!
Hello all.
Read yesterdays thread and this morning so far but CRS. I do hope all who are feeling cruddy get better real soon, though. Got the two kids all set for school. Registration was Wed. and yesterday I went and got supplies and school clothes. So frustrating because she doesn't like that , he doesn't like that. By noon I was ready to spit nails!
I never understood golf either. Course I don't understand why they want to run around after a samll brown ball and pounce on each other to the point of pain and injury either. Now you see I didn't take after my mom in that respect. She is the biggest Packer fan in the state. She can tell you every play that is going on and name every team member right on down to the ones that seldom play.
I take after Grams. She never watched it either, she always had her flowers inside and out to keep her busy and that is what I'm doing I guess. DH watches golf constantly when its going. Now I'm not too dense I know of Tiger Woods and Phil Michealson(sp) and the one DH isn't fond of........LoveIII I just don't understand it. I know Tiger's gotten rich over it.
I am down to the original 25 fish as of 6o'clock last night. I don't even want to go out this morning and check. All the clear brownish ones are gone and a few, well more than a few of the smaller orange ones. Will it ever end? Can I have just two? Thats not too much to ask is it? What are ya gonna do.
Must go up for more coffee, outside for a quick smoke and check the pond.............Dread. bbl Cherie
Cherie,
That is disturbing about your fish. I have set up new ponds 3 times (not to mention innumerable fish tanks). I have thrown feeder fish in every time, the day after set up and only had one or two die.
Where did your pond water come from? Have you had any rain runoff get into your pond and had weed killer in your soil/grass?
This is very perplexing.
Molly
Cherie the little brown fish will most likely change color. When my fish had little ones almost all of them changed to orange or orange and white. So hang in there. That still seems to be a lot to lose.
101 glad your date was fantastic~~~
Marie beautiful GGS. Samuel is a neat name. Hope your cold disappears fast. Gotta have GGS time.
Sarv48 the humidity yesterday was that bad. My DH came in the house from mowing lawn and he was drenchd from it.
To everybody dealing with dental problems or illness hope the professionals get their butts in gear and get you taken care of. That goes for the ins. Co. also. Which we will never see. My DH's Boss is switching companies again. So who knows what we will end up with.
Read yesterdays thread and didn't keep track of what everybody did. So if you had fun- good, if you were ill- hope you get better, If you had a good viist with someone hope it was enjoyable, Yes I'm sure I'm leaving out someone and I'm sorry.
Good Morning. :)
Kooger, so sorry about the upcoming procedure, sounds terrible. Good thing they will put you to LaLa land. Hey, Thanks for the Green Grow the Rushes Ho lyrics!
I have thought about a portable CD player but I have this issue with contributing to the 3 billion lead acid batteries we put in landfills every year. Besides, I think it does my brain good to search around for old lyrics in my head. BTW, M5, yes that's the same Gilbert from the wonderful G&S "patter" songs. I have a couple of great old vinyl records (in storage, of course) of some of them.
Maria, Lovely GGS you have, and sorry you aren't feeling better. There's lots of fall pollen in the air here already and that may be aiding and abetting your cold up there too. Same for McCool. I saw in the paper there's a golden retriever up for adoption here at the animal shelter... his name is Sampson!
IO1, sounds like you had a great "date"!
Well, I need to get off line. Brent will be here soon and stuff like the joist hangers remain in the back of my truck. Busy day planned today!
Hi all!
hope those stupid colds go away! It'll be winter soon enough for all that kind of stuff.
Well we signed all the papers for the next phase of the farm....the picking up and moving of the house. What a hoot...an expensive one, but I have to say, for all my rearranging of the shrubbery, I've never moved the entire house 20 feet to the left!! I'll just tell everyone I like the view there just a little better!
Once they bring in the cranes and steel beams, Ill be there with my camera. Gotta get my entertainment value. I'll post on the Farm forum, but I expect it'll be at least another week or so.
Oh boy, Monster's drinking the coffee, just what he needs, be right back////
Whoooeee, dmc, you will have one wild cat!
Good morning everybody. It is overcast here, and they say rain later on. I have been hearing this forecast for the last 3 days, and no rain yet. It was mid 90's yesterday, and really humid.
Gonna see if there are any yard sales worth visiting. Need a trip to the bank and library too.
dmc, a cat drinking coffee? Better watch out, he/she will be energized for the rest of the day. Now I see why the name Monster!!
cece, sorry about the fish, I would be concerned, there has got to be a reaston for the fatalities.
Ws, can you manage to be the supervisor today, giving "direction" is a lot easier that working!!
Darius, having a CD player would be cheaper in the long run, than fixing a truck that ran off the road, because it's driver was bored/sleepy!!
Sarv, hope the humidity decreases, maybe in the form of rain?
~~~ to you Molly.
Gotta go pick up the house a little before heading out. Hope everybody has a nice day.
BBL
We filled the pond on a Saturday night, went and got a chloramine remover and put that in then got the fish the next day. I feed them once a day. Should I be feeding them more often? or maybe not enough? No rain to speak of and there was no lawn in that part at all. I don't use a weed killer I just pull them up so no, no weed killer. Ed did spray the tree back in May with a mosquito killer but that was may. The water came from the outside faucet, hence the chloriamine remover.
Darius- get some rechargeables....I use them in all my stuff - they last eons.
Monster really sounds like a monster!!! what next??
dm- refresh my memory - exactly why are you moving the house - onto a new foundation? Sounds exciting anyhow!! I'm watching HGTV and keep wondering - who really lives in all those mansions?? Certainly isn't anyone I know!!
Time for another game of scrabble. Weather is so gloomy, I may not even get dressed today! (plus I am sneezing my head off....something must be blooming.)
Cherie,
Still perplexing. Even without the chlorine remover, 48 hours is plenty of time for it to dissipate on its own. Try this just for the heck of it. Go to the fish store and by a big handful of anachris. Throw that in the pond. This floating vine plant is THE best oxygenator and it also helps to clean fish poo.
2 of my last 3 ponds have been stillwater and the only thing that really killed the fish was when a hired lawn man didn't use a bag on the mower to catch the grass. The grass went in the pond, got rotten and killed a few fish. I had to remove a lot of the water, clean the debris and refill it.
I don't remember if I told yall last night, but we had lots of rain for quite a while. One of the roof vent sprung a leak around it and was coming into the living room, dripping on my dsl box. NO GOOD.
So during the downpour and storm, my ds got up with the plastic tarp and tied it off at the 4 corners over the top of the roof, down over the drip edge. It stopped the leak. I went up and was going to seal it up this morning but the roof is too wet and it looks like more rain. I checked the ties and they are good. So I guess we are part of the blue roof syndrome, only my tarp is green.
They are calling for rain for the next 48 hours. So in the meantime, we praise for the water for the gardens and try to stay dry up here in the house.
Artcons and his lovely wife are coming to visit today on their way to their vacation spot. He's bringing a lot of plants, including natives that he started from cuttings. And I have lots of natives I dug up for him from my property here to take home with him. Oh yes, they're stopping back by on their way home next week. Oh, I just remembered a couple more natives I wanted to share with him.
And I need to get cleaned up. Been a sweaty morning already.
Hey Bonnie... if you're gonna "pick up the house", maybe you can go and help dmc pick up hers to move it 20 feet, LOL.
I have been up since 7, wishing I was still in bed all the while, but DS got me up and I am watching after him. I just finally decided to make some coffee and wake up for real. We arent doing anything today, just staying at home and resting up. DH will come in from work about lunch time and hopefully I can get him to watch the boys for a while as I need to go and get a manicure. We had a terrible storm Wednesday and some of my potted plants were blown off of the porch into the yard. So I will be repotting them today at some point.
I just love this time of year. All of the gardening supplies are on sale! I have gone a bit crazy this week with it. Cant allow myself one more shopping visit. LOL
darius-LOL!! Now I can say I picked up the house too! Another first!!
sarv- We bought a farm last Dec. House was built in 1830's, upgraded a bit in 1930, then had water damage in 2004 and was sold as is. We excavated under the summer kitchen in the early spring. the sills are rotted and that addition is pretty beat. We will dismantle and save all the wide boards, beams, etc.
The main part of the house has a stone basement under part of it. The sills will need repair, and everything will need replacing eventually, windows, roof etc. I already gutted the lath and plaster. The most expedient way to save any of it is now to pour a basement in the footprint that has already been excavated, set the main part of the house on it, and then eventually build a whole new kitchen which will look just like the old summer kitchen from the outside but be all new. Then we can put windows or French doors overlooking the meadows. It will be gorgeous. It will be an R-50 insulated walkout basement, also with views of the meadows. From the front it will look exactly as it always has. Seems like a good alternative to me. Probably not from a financial standpoint,but what the hey...its an emotional and historical thing too.
Good morning.
Monster on caffene, sounds like just what the little fella needs!
Dmc, house moving, wow! Is the pit under the house going to become a swimming pool or something now? Give us more info, or is it already on another forum?
Elaine, that sounds like quite a unique evening! Great fun.
Darius, I sing and recite things as I drive quite often where there is no radio reception. I also have a bunch of CD's that I play but the player is built in so I didn't have to improvise anything.
Maria, and McCool, I hope your colds are in the going away mode as of today. Meanwhile, I hope you haven't sneezed on the keyboard!
Our house was also moved, way before we bought it. The former owner said it used to be down the hill near where my garden is, and they moved it on log rollers, pulled with trucks and tractors. The journey took quite a while because they had to move the logs quite often and make other adjustments, and it made a large U shaped turn in the process. So the bedrooms ended up on the west side of the house (therefore hotter in the summer) and the front door which had faced south now faces north, right into the prevailing wind in the winter, but we mostly use the back door anyhow so that really isn't a problem. They had dug and cemented a basement to place it on, and it hasn't blown away in the wind although they said they sure could tell the difference in the amount of wind they got up here. We have a picture taken of it from a plane in 61, the big trees in our yard (elms) weren't even there and I also see a lot of other changes. We made a lot of those changes ourselves.
Busy day ahead, got to go now. Have a great day everyone.
Zoom zoom zoom!!!
That's me running by. I've got to get this nasty place cleaned up. My parents are coming next week-end and with my arm in a mess ... I haven't been doing much in the cleaning department lately. It's finally beginning to feel better. The bursitis is *all gone. I still have to wear my splint, but McCool you were right. It does make my wrist stop hurting. I just have to be careful with those sudden moves that upset my rotater cuff.
Cherie ... so sorry about your fish. Hope you figure out what's going on.
Katie ... you sound like me ... I do love going to the garden sales. Went to a famous place last week-end though, and they had a nice big reduce sale on their flower pots. Had a gorgeous one all picked out, but when I got to the register ... was told the sale was off and they had forgotten to pick up the sign. I do so hate it when they pull stuff like that. I just set it aside and went on my way.
sarv, I think we must have something blooming here also. I was sneezing all day yesterday. I hope all these sniffles at coffee means fall is on the way. I'm so sick of this heat. LOL
Wood, so sorry to hear about your medical problems. That sure sounds yucky! Please do take care.
Maria ... h e l l o??? Are you feeling better today?
Defoe, hope you have fun at your yard sales. If *only* we lived closer!
Molly, hope you have a good time today with your DG friends. Sorry about the leak. Isn't that *just* the way of it?
Well, to those I've missed this a.m. please just overlook me. I'm waving for now.
~~~Elaine
Someone mop my brow. There is so much humidity in the air it is like a fine mist coming down. DH decided to plant two new pine trees. The 40 or so we have are slowly getting some disease and dying. We cut down 5 or 6 last winter and another 10 or so are showing signs of dying with 4 really dead. Hopefully the kind we are replanting will not get the disease. I wanted to put in some oak, but DH said they are bad for plants (now he has never cared a hoot about plants before!)
We have one tree in the ground and DH said he needed a water break- so we are both inside.
Katie-I have gone to several sales and am overcome with buying tons and then have no where to plant them. I currently have 6 with no place to put them....but I'll find a place!!
IO1-I would have asked to speak to a manager- if the sign is still up- they should honor it. I did that at Sam's club. They had beautiful summer chairs marked for 8.99. I thought that was awfully cheap, so picked up 4. Got to the cash register and they rang up 29.99. I said 'your sign says 8.99'- they called a manager over and I did get the cheap price. Pays to say something....
Take it easy with the arm!!! I thought mine was ok and over did it and the pain was back. Took another month for things to settle down.
Molly - hope the tarp holds and you don't get anymore leaks!! Isn't it always something...I often think I am ready for a condo so I don't have any upkeep other than the inside. But then I think about leaving my beautiful gardens and I think I'll stay where I am for the time being.
Well, time to rouse DH and get a planting (he nods off the minute he hits his chair...)
Molly, I forgot to say sorry about the green tarp. You can't be a "real" Floridian unless it's a blue tarp, LOL.
Well, my day is nothing like I planned. I had hoped to get the 4 remaining posts in cement in the barn but Brent never showed. Strange because he's never even a minute late.
So, I'm oven roasting tomatoes again, with onions and garlic. I have some store canned black olives in a box somewhere, and a pound of chopped fresh mushrooms in the fridge. I guess I am making spaghetti sauce, my neighbor gave me more tomatoes. I should have some of my own in a week or two. There's probably 200 on my Husky plant but I'm not sure they'd make good sauce. She gave me several big beef toms and I bought bacon. Only time I usually eat bacon is on BLT's in the summer. Looking forward to it!
Sarv, the phytophera (sp?) root rot is taking a BIG toll on the pines here, and Christmas trees are a big business in this area. Sorry about yours. As far as I know, oaks don't affect plants, only black walnut trees do. And, turns out I have a big one out by the road and bridge.
sarv, I am cleaning an old house (helping) because I am obsessed with historic preservation (dmc understands). I helped save the oldest frame house in the mountains of NC which is now a house-museum. This is only one of several that I've helped with. Once cleaned up, the house will be sold by the Preservation Foundation of NC, which resells historic houses with protective covenants on them.
cece, the ball isn't brown, it's usually white although I have seen some yellow yellow ones, lol.
I got to the house at 8 a.m., about an hour before everyone else but it was really quite cool. I spent a lot of time on one room, tearing down loose wallpaper, cleaning up 6 inches of debris on the floor, and sweeping. There was a lot of very fine dirt on the floor. I had to go over the same spot 3 or 4 times and did the whole room like that 3 times. Since there's no water, I will have to bring a Swifter to get up the last of it.
I saw some wonderfully optimistic things. The roof is not leaking. After 50 or more years with the same tin roof, it is still OK. No rats, bats, snakes or mice, just spiders. The floors are wide boards but fit very tightly together. I wondered what they might look like if the brown paint was removed and they were sanded. Well, later on I was in the kitchen and we began to pull up an old linoleum rug. Under it, the floor was beautiful.
The mantels are missing, but I have pictures of them. We can rebuild them.
My back did pretty well and I am OK now. However, I was appalled when i got home to discover when I blew my nose that the dirt came out looking like coal dust.
Okay, I am back, stopped a few yard sales, and they were the pits. Didn't buy a thing. I did see a pretty stained glass panel, as a garden art object, but it was overpriced. I have seen them, it is really colored glass, it was new and in the box, but they wanted more than what they cost in the stores. So I passed.Some brand new tennis shoes (mens) but I would't know anyone who could wear a 15 1/2!!
Woodspirit, that house sounds lovely, especially the floors. I just love the old wide boards, they always give such character to the rooms.
Darius, you didn't know I was so strong did you? LOL, what I meant to say was pick up and straighten, aw you know that. If you are making spaghetti sauce, the ingredients you listed is just about what I have been using, and it is delicious. I could just sit and eat it right from the jar, no crackers or anything. This last batch I made, had some yellow tomatoes and threw them in too, I thought it would make it a lighter color, but I can't tell much difference. So far I have 18 pints, and may make another batch. I made the last smooth, so I could use it in chicken dishes (parmesan) and for lasagna, and ziti.
Molly, I laughed about the green tarp, does that mean that you are a higher class Floridian or are you dirt poor. Don't want the neighbors to miss class you. So sorry about the leak, hope that you get it fixed before any more damage is done.
Sarv, sorry to hear that your trees are slowly dying. Is it something that is spread tree to tree? If there is nothing that would halt it, I would seriously think about taking them out and replanting with something else. I would check first to see if there is anything in the soil that would damage other trees before doing that. I agree with Darius, I don't think that oaks affect plants, just the dreaded black walnut with the juglone.
dmc, as you can see from my comments above, I will not be coming to pick up your house, better stick with the contractors for that. LOL There is a large block in a nearby town, where they are moving several houses. It is a slow process, and have been watching it weekly as it progresses. When I was there Thursday, they had three that we up on the platforms, looked ready to move.
katym, A manicure sounds like something my poor hands could use. I always keep them polished, mainly to hide the dirt that I never can be able to remove entirely.
I01, slow down, don't want you running out of energy before your folks get there. Yeah, I wished we lived closer, just think of all the mischief we could get into together!!
Mary, hope you had a good day, you come back and tell us all that you accomplished.
Since we haven't heard from Maria, I am assuming that maybe she got a Dr appointment, and is planning on getting better. Hope that is the case.
McCool, hope that you don't have a day that will wear you out, and I hope you too are feeling some better.
Well, I am going to grill some hamburgers tonight, this week has been so busy, that we decided to forego the weekly outing, stay in and try to get rested up.
Will be back later to check to see what's gone on.
Molly? I have a question for you. I went to the fish store for the anachris you mentioned. The man didn't have any and said it would last only about a day or two any way. I told him the size of the pond (100 gallons) and that although I used tap water I did use a chloramine remover. I explained about the fish. First he told me 50 feeder fish was way too many for a 100 gallon pond......I figured that but had been told they die off so easily. Second when told the size of much of the fish was appalled that they even sold the tiny ones to me because he said the real small ones can't live outside. He suggeted that I go to the store and buy some UN-iodinized salt or Kosher salt and add 1/2 lb to the pond. Something about the good bacteria vs bad bacteria. I'm reluctant..........I've lost so many. Have you heard of this????? Does it help??????? I ended up buying 10 more feeder fish from him 2-2 & 1/2 inches long.

Bonnie,
I think the blue tarp indicates they are waiting for the insurance company to dish out some money for repairs.
The green one means we're waiting on me to repair it.
Actually, I picked up that green tarp at Big Lots as a sun shade for the plant trade I had here in June. It's a 12X16 so makes a big shade spot. I wanted green to match foliage and stuff. The blue would clash, donchaknow.
Molly
:^)))
Hello everyone
I feel much better today, but still cough dr. prescribed pills, they helped. My daughter picked them up. I was too sick to do it myself was afraid to drive
Cherie,
First off, the anachris will last and grow as long as the fish don't eat it. I used to keep it in my aquarium in the house and it multiplied so quickly I put the extra in my pond. Then I threw away the extra from that.
General rule of thumb for fish in water: 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. When you have plants then you need to take that into consideration too.
I don't know what the man was talking about the anachris only lasting a day. Some say that it only oxygenates DURING the day.
The only thing I've ever heard of putting a little salt in the water was for conditioning. This may be true, but certainly not mandatory.
I'm sure this is probably a bit disheartening to you, what with fish dying and conflicting advice. Take a look at this site and just read it and get a feel for things.
http://www.geocities.com/dtmcbride/home_garden/fish_pond.html
Other than what you are experiencing at the moment, your next problem will be algae. Keep in mind, aside from the fact that algae will consume oxygen, that is the only problem with it. I had a big string algae problem in my new pond this year. I fished it out, laid it at the base of my Jap. Maple tree, sprayed it into the ground and the next day, some of the leaves had gone red on the tree. It had acted as a fertilizer.
Anyway, check into the water garden forum and see what bits of info you can get over there. Most of all, just relax. You knew you were going to lose a fish or two, that's why you got feeder fish. In the end, everything will work out just fine.
Molly

oh crap - I typed a long message and it went poof....now I'm ticked...gonna sign off and pout
Thanks Molly, No matter How much I've read up on this subject of ponds fish and water plants, I know there's so much more to learn and I'm inpatient. Things gthat work for everybody else will not necessarlily work for me. I really do appreciate though that you take the time to anwser my questions and give advice. That means alot and it endears you to my heart for tryin g to help. I'll check out the web site Thanks again................from the bottom of my heart.
Cherie
Molly, just kidding about the tarp. I know that there is still a lot of the blue ones on roofs in Fla.
Maria, glad you got some meds and are feeling better, hope by the first of the week you will be your normal self. How's Samson? Is he being the good nurse?
Sarv, come on back, don't pout too long, we really want to know what you said, I have cursed the computer grimlins for you, so that should solve the issue.
Got to get some things ready to go in the mail on Monday, I am running about 3 days behind on some stuff.
BBL
Samson must know I am sick, he is as good as gold, does not ask for anything just picks up his ears when i cough or blow my nose comes up and puts his head on my lap, so sweet
Home at last, whew, thank goodness, home at last. Got up at 6 to help DD with her rummage sale. Then had to work 10 to 2 and back to the rummage sale to help pack up. I'm pooped! I stopped at a co-workers on the way back to the rummage and she gave me 4 ripe tomatoes!! Yum! Yum! I bring flowers to work about once a week and she wanted my huge limonium (Russian Statice) bouquet. I was very glad to give it to her since she worked for me two weeks ago when we had our rummage. That was so nice of her to help me out and save me from getting attendance points. What would we do without friends??
DH went on a motorcycle ride so I get to bum around and play with plants for the next while. I better pick the raspberries, they need it. I should bring them to our back yard neighbor. DH heard yesterday that his two boys are home cuz he's not gonna make it. He's only mid 50s. He had a heart valve replacement a number of years ago and something went wrong, I can't remember what all. Abt ten years ago, I guess and he's looked like an old man since. Apparently the valve needs redoing now but he got staph and infection in his blood and now he's not going to make it. Sad, that's for sure!
The birdfeeders need filling too! So I better get something done. Enjoyed reading everyone's posts today. I sure am interested in the poor fish's dilemmas in that pond. I dream of a pond some day so always have to pay attn when pond and fish talking is posted.
darius - ur welcome! :) I was surprised how wrong I had remembered it. LOL And I didn't even realize it was a Christmas carol. :)
ok, ttyl all! have a wonderful evening!
Just got back from my evening garden walk - now I feel calmer...
Oh that Samson- what a good boy he is. Animals sure are sensitive to our needs aren't they. Maria, follow doctors orders - take it easy. How bout a pot of chicken soup?
DH went and got us subs for dinner- I had a veggie one- really hit the spot!! As I was coming in from my garden walk, DH was busy in the kitchen making dessert - malts! Oh my, were they the best!!
I messengered my plants this afternoon- probably for the last time this year. I am sold on that stuff. I had beautiful blooms on everything,, despite the beastly hot weather we've had. Sure hope we have another co-op for the stuff next spring.
defoe-when we moved here 34 yrs ago we had about 100 trees all planted close together. We've slowly weeded them out so that they are nicely spaced and my shade garden beds are all under them. Now that they are dying, the beds will become sun beds. I have tons of gorgeous hosta and astilbe - they will cook with no shade. We do have 5 different pines that do not seem to be affected like the others. They are a short needled pine. Oh well, life is full of change...This one is just hard to accept.
Well, `` ~~~ to everyone...
Oh we're going out to DB yacht tomorrow. DS/BIL are coming up from Indiana. We going for a boat ride and out to dinner. Hope the lake is calm...burp...
sarv - how much do you figure you used of the Messenger. I've been tempted to get some.
kooger, I use it every three weeks. I've used 15pkgs so far - the one gallon size. I could have used more, but I haven't done everything that last few times - didn't do hostas, and couldn't reach all the leaves on my brugs.- they are taller than I am. And I didn't do both sides of them - just the side I could reach!
lSarv, thanks love some chicken soup, my very faavorite
There must be a post-eater on the loose, I had one almost all written and POOOFFF it disappeared, so I went to pout for a while too. Now what was I saying that was so important? snort!
Let's see. DH's softball tourney was ummmm....not so good (should have gone to Detroit??) The team from work that he played with doesn't play regularly, and the first team they played plays every week. You can see what's coming can't you? Yup, 13 to zip. Second game was almost as bad. There were only three guys that actually knew how to play, but you can't carry the whole team on your back. Now he's limping around with a bum foot. Nuff said.
Maria, hope you are on the way to recovery. Isn't is nice that our furry friends always sense when we are ill, or troubled and stay by our sides to keep us company. Sometimes i have so much company on the bed, I can't turn over without squashing a cat.
Molly I hope the rain lets up enough for your DS to get up there and do a patch. The water that you see come in is only half the problem, it's also where it seeps on the way down.
IO1, you should have called the manager, they have a responsibility to have corrects signs and prices. Usually they will comply with the posted price. I'm staying out of garden shops for the duration, too much temptation.
Cece, guys seem more obsessed about golf, I just play for the fun and socializing. I'm sure I'm never going to get any better, but if I stay home I might have to clean and that's contrary to my nature. I think you were referring to football when you mentioned the brown ball. I dont watch it either. I think the last game I watched was the one known as the Ice Bowl, the Packers were playing in an ice storm in Green Bay...must have been in the sixties. I heard they were making a movie out of it. Game time for me is shopping, a movie or long distance phone time.
DH's boss is out on leave, they diagnosed breast cancer and it has spread to the lymph nodes. I have her home address, and I'm planning to send a card, but I thought I would also pick a big spray of lavender and dry it and send that. What do you think? She's in and out of chemo and I know it tends to make people nauseated, would lavender be unpleasant?
Bonnie, some yard sales aren't even worth the gas to visit. People sell stuff that I'd throw out. I like estate sales much better, there are some genuinely nice things. I did pick up a nice little step stool last week, but it had those black rubber no-skid strips on it, that were kind of worn. I soaked them off with GooGone, but some of the adhesive is still there. Denatured alcohol made most of it ball up, but there are still some sticky spots. I'll finish it when it's cooler, the garage is an oven most of the day.
I tried making spaghetti sauce with all yellow tomatos once, I thought it would be fun...but the longer I cooked it the redder it got until finally you couldn't tell the difference.
I better send this off before the gremlins attack again....Hope everyone is having a good weekend.
Sheila

kooger are you saying your DH is very ill and not going to make it? with heart disease? Oh my goodness, how sad to be aware of what's coming. But I'm sure your sons want to make the most of the time he has left.
I hope I haven't misunderstood this.
no, it s my neighbor's husband. sorry if I didn't put it very plainly.
