Morning all,

Hopefully this isn't a false start to our day. We'll see in a minute.

Hi McCool ... just wanted to say good job on starting today's daily! Also wanted to ask about your DH. Sure hope he's doing better and you've had some profitable days at the store.

Oh Maria ... congrats on Samuel!!! Isn't that just so wonderful? Another generation to see and love! :-)

Defoe ... what a pita to be in that chair so long ... but oh how worth it. Now you're all done with those braces! We need a pic of your beautiful smile!

Ginni, you are such a wonderful daughter. You're lucky to have your Mom close by. Mine is 175 miles away and too old to drive this far. My sis is bringing my folks down here in a couple of weeks, though. Can't wait!

Ann ... hope you have a wonderful and safe trip. Yeah ... those airports will probably be different now. Wear some shoes you can easily slip out of. They say everyone will be taking them off now. Oooh, can you imagine trying to smuggle a bottle of wine on board? Wow!

Oh dmc ... cute name!

Casy, I too have wondered about your DH. Sure hope all is going well for you two.

Babs ... it was so good to see you checking in and I'm glad your Mum is doing as well as she is. Please know you're in my thoughts and prayers and I'm sending you many hugs.

Well, I didn't have to cook lunch afterall. The DH called and said he was bringing lunch from the little caf across the road. It's home cooking, and you get a meat, 3 veggies, bread, a glass of tea with dessert for $5. Can't beat it for the price. Then late in the afternoon he called and asked if I'd go out on Friday night with him on a date. Of course I said I would. I haven't figured out what's wrong with him, though ... he hasn't done that in soooo long. He said he has tickets to somewhere but won't tell me where. I told him I needed to know so I'd know how to dress ... but all he'd say is casual ... no jeans. Can't think of much around here that requires tickets except maybe a gospel sing which I do adore ... but not aware of any. I'm sooo excited!

Okay, it's late so I'm just ~~ to everyone else for now.
nighty night

I01, it has been so long since I have been on a date, would thrill me to pieces. So first thing Saturday morning, you have to dish all, okay.

I posted on yesterday's thread, cause when I started it, it was Thursday.

Babs, so glad that you are popping in once in awhile to give us updates. Glad your mum is doing as well as she is. Just give her an extra hug from this group, and tell her often how much you love her.

Carat, tell us about DH, please, we care, and am hoping that he is more comfortable.

Well to be redundant, Good night again.

Bonnei, Samuelmay have been the original consideration regarding the biblical name but in this case GGS was named after his ancester, Samual Lord, who arrived in this country from Leeds, England, in 1780. He weight was 8.1, the other particulars I do not know .

As you can see that darn cold is keeping me up, grrrrrrrrr

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Morning everyone...cloudy and humid here. Todays chore is to water all the brugs -- then folks bringing out lunch - lebanese meat pies -yum...

Dinner last night wasn't that awful - just hamburg helper with fresh veggies- I had no creative juices left to make something from scratch. We scarfed it down like it was cavier. Had a small ice cream cone for dessert and huge red grapes later on....

Maria- what a sweet little guy!! When your cold departs, give him a hug/kiss from all of us!! What, you not only cook lovely meals, but you do flower arranging too? What a talented gal..I cannot arrange flowers worth a toot. What's the secret?

Defoe and Darius win the 'best worker' award. Honestly, you two put me to shame...What super vitamins do you take??

tg - thanks for the info on the retirement stuff. We had mom make a trust/living will thing, so her end wishes are in place. She also made provisions for her DH - he can live in her condo alone, but cannot have anyone move in with him. We tried to talk her out of that, but she dug her heels in. (he has some leeches for children....) Is there any secret for getting your name on the 'list'? Do you have to be a member of a certain church etc?

Defoe - hooray on the braces coming off - now smile nice for the camera...DGS who is 9 just got his off too- he looks so handsome. They sure do start them early now. He didn't even have them on for a year. He said wearing the retainer is the pits tho- always has to take it in and out for food consumption.

Vi - good luck on your trip - check in when you can.

Well, CRS and can't go back to yesterdays page...grrr darn computer. I am afraid of losing this post, so I will send it out!!

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Oooooo, new baby! And a nice size, too!! How sweet, I love the old fashioned names that are being used more these days, and how special that he is named for an ancestor. I hope you get to see him often, Maria! Your bouquet is lovely, Where did you learn flower arranging? Mine all get stuck in a vase straight up!

Oh my, it's after 6 and it's still dark out! I've got golf this morning, and I think long pants will be the order of the day. Not because of heat, Tuesday when I golfed the flies were ferocious, and I came home with quite a few little scabs where they took out a chunk of me. Nights have been very cool here. I predict....... fall, with winter following soon after.

IO1, a date!! How exciting. I usually have to ask my DH out, and I don't always get a yes. He's playing in a company baseball tournement on Saturday, if it doesn't rain, and I'm trying to not comment about it. He has back problems, which he won't see anyone about, and personally I don't think he should be doing it, but anything I say would just fly past him so I'm zipping my lip. We will need to hear all about this event, in glorious detail!
And he brought lunch~what a guy! If my DH comes home at lunch time, he usually brings a couple of coworkers. He is smart enough to warn me so that I'm not sitting in front of the computer in my jammies.

I have one moonflower growing out of a pot that is slowly creeping it's way up to the deck. Wonder if I'll see a blossom on it before frost hits!

Ann, some people are taking self addressed stamped padded envelopes with them so they can mail items home from the airport if they can't take them on a plane. Maybe they are doing some traveling before their flight, like you are and don't want to have them confiscated. Have a great trip, I hope you are able to keep in touch for a while before you fly out.

McCool, I'm sure the more exposure you have to the public, the more at risk you are. I've heard the Airbourne is effective, but I can't say I've tried it. I hardly see anyone in the winter time!

I'd better get moving, have a super day, hug your loved ones, pet the animals, water where needed, and come back before the day is over and tell us how everything is. ~~~~ to those who haven't checked in, reminding those who haven't posted for a while that we are thinking about them, and wishing for healing for those in need of it!

Later...

Sheila

Good Morning all,

I only just did a little reading last night, it was a long day yesterday.

I have a girlfriend that moved from S Florida to Jacksonville in March. So I went to see her and took her to FlaJaxGardners and Sugarweeds houses.

Jeremy in Jax had more of the motherlode plants and we cleared a few out. I'll have a lot to do in the next couple days planting them and Artcons and his dw are coming to visit on Saturday. I guess I sould get some of that dust off the tables in the living room.

It's 75 this morning and looks to be overcast. Looks like they are calling for rain for the next 3 days. The good news is, it's usually not a constant rain. I can get some decent gardening in when it's overcast and drizzly.

I stopped off at a roadside backyard grower nursery, that I trade with. I picked up a beautiful Crepe Myrtle tree yesterday on the way home. It's called Red Rocket, of course it grows red flowers. I also got a good deal on a couple of Lord Baltimore hibiscus plants. As if I didn't already have a van load. The problem is, Gail took some of Jeremy's plants and when I dropped her and her plants off, it left more room in the van........make sense now?

Not a very good picture, but the best out of three. Wind is calm, I better get out to the fire pit and take care of that business now.

Beautiful color, Molly! I planted an hibiscus, a pink one, of course, it is an annual here but have and still do enjoy looking at the lovely blossom.s

Sarv, I have been a garden Club member since I was 19 years old where I learned to make arrangements among many other stuff, eventually I received a few ribbons when we had an exhibition.
The basic sare really not hard to do. Think of a triangle with, just as you might do for a container but much smaller.Spiky plants in the back and on sides follow through with buds of small .flowers. The focal point shoud be with large blossoms cut to different lenghs,Something like that has to be placed agains a wall if you want it to see it from all sides repeat same in the back. You will need a flower pin .to anker them.
There are great books on flower arrangement , if you have lots of flowers it is fun to make them. Also when you cut the flowers on the garden make sure you put them in a bucket of wateer you carry with you, they will keep a long time.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Good morning all, I slept in a bit this morning, it sure did feel good too. Still in jammies, but need to get going, if much is accomplished today.

Sarv, that supper didn't sound that bad. Isn't hamburger amazing, so versitile, and filling? Last night I grilled pork loin chops, which were marinated in california garlic, herbs and peppers, had yummy sweet potatoes from the garden, corn, creamed yellow squash with onion, and of course ripe tomatoes. Very good. Tonight is Cornish game hen, and haven't thought about sides yet. Gosh this is so awful, go to bed with food on the mind, and wake planning what to eat during the day/evening.

First order of business today is to plant 4 daylilies recieved from a coop yesterday. Waiting for DH to leave to do that, he is grumbling about everybody going daylily crazy.

It is overcast here, but the forecast is for hot/humid mid 90's, with chance of showers today/tonight and tomorrow.

J C Penney's is having a sale today, and want to go there, will see if there is enough time to squeeze that in.

DH is taking DMIL to cardiologist this morning, hope they can reduce some of her meds.

Well if I don't get started, won't get done, so BBL

Clinton, IN(Zone 5b)

Good morning to all. We are getting the rain that everyone else wants/needs. It has been a steady downpour since the kids got on the bus this morning and is dark and gloomy outside. I feel like I should still be sleeping because it is so dark out.

I had a very good breakfast this morning. There is a restaurant right up the road from us called The Beef House. It has won national awards for the best steak house so some of you may have heard of it if you've ever been over this direction. Anyway, they have the most amazing yeast rolls that just melt in your mouth and a co-worker brought me a box full of them yesterday, so Beef House rolls with grape jelly were my breakfast. I could eat the whole box myself, they are that good. But I will be good and share!

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Good morning. I hope it's a beautiful day in your neighborhood.

Maria, congratulations on a beautiful GGS. I hope you are over your cold soon so you can see him. And thank you for the quick and simple explanation of flower arranging. You made it sound so simple, but wait until I try it. My flower arranging efforts have always turned out like a handfull of dandylions stuck into a fruit jar by a 5 year old. So, your quick lesson will help a lot. Now, if I just had flowers, mine are pretty much done except for the tall phlox until the fall types start blooming, even the roses have quit. They need more TLC, some MG or something to give them a boost now and then, not just water, and regular deadheading would help too. Hmmm, how many could I have snipped in the time I have used sitting here?

Sarv, you have to tell us about Lebanese meat pies. What kind of meat, and does it have vegies, gravy and a pie crust? And yes, do tell us about the dinner you mentioned last night. My take on it was that it was not anything that you expected to win a blue ribbon, and did you have the leftovers for breakfast?

Elaine, how sweet of your hubby to take you on a date. Maybe there is nothing wrong with him but everything right. Hmmm, something that requires tickets but not overnight bags, we will all be waiting for the details.

?, for the owner of the PITA cat, is that short for Pain in the A_ _? I couldn't think of anything else it might be.

Defoe, I hope the rest of your dental work goes smoothly. Hooooray for having insurance, I don't, so mine has been the expense of the century!

Dmc, the name Monster for the kitten reminds me of my son and daughter in law's cat, when they had only had him a couple of days they named him Taz for Tazmanian devil. He is still a very active cat even as an adult, and they later rescued a kitten that was outside their house in a snowstorm, a female tabby they named Connie because of her stripes and the fact that she must have escaped from somewhere. She was a very friendly, loving, box trained kitten but they never learned her origins. The two cats run up and down the stairs, over the backs of chairs and couch, and the layout of their house is such that they can make a circle though living room, office, back hallway, kitchen, dining room front hall and back to the living room, like a racetrack. Zoom, galloping cat feet, and furry streaks going in all directions! And then when they run out of energy they sleep snuggled together.

My daughter in law came out and spent the afternoon with me, we did some trimming, some weeding, she fixed the computer! and then we went to visit one of my neighbors. The neighbor is the lady who lost a cat about 2 months ago with feline leukemia, and day before yesterday she lost another one to a snakebite. She was happy to have us come and wander through her gardens and provide some company and a bit of sympathy and cheer. My daughter in law had been there in the winter but had never seen the gardens so it was nice for both of them.

Tgif, I wondered about Mither, it's a term I haven't heard often. Bless you for taking such good care of her in her old age.

Babs, it's nice to have you check in. Give your Mum my best wishes and a hug. I know she appreciates all your loving care, and caring enough to make sure she has care when you aren't able to be there. I would emagine you feel a bit more rested now that somebody is helping.

Molly, that's a beautiful Crepe Myrtle. We don't have them here so I'm guessing that they are tender and wouldn't stand cold winters. And another van load of plants, isn't it fun to have all the room to plant them. Did you get your ad figured out? They cost but they also pay! When does the new phone book come out so potential customers can find you? Do you have a sign on your van?

Breezy has been turned back out into the pasture, he just has a small open wound now and I can rinse it out easily if he gets into the mud along the little creek from the spring. He will, it is just a matter of when. I need to ride Patch today before the afternoon thunderstorms come through, I didn't get it done yesterday. There is a ride in Idaho in just over a week but he won't be ready for it and neither will Breezy. Somebody else's turn for year end awards this year I think.

Time to get dressed and get busy. ~~~ to everybody I missed this time around.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Mary,

Thanks, I like the Crepe Myrtle too. Primarily the red ones. This specific one is hardy to zone 6b according to the plant files. They are deciduous so will lose their leaves and flowers for the winter anyway.

Yes I did get the ad figured out. We'll go with a business card size ad with a black and white photo of my head and shoulders. There aren't too many house painters in the Gainesville area and certainly no other women advertising in the yellow pages.

The books come out in the middle of January and my first bill won't be due until after the end of January.

I don't have a sign on my van, but have been considering getting one. Benjamin Moore offers many items such as this at a lower than retail cost for professionals, magnet sign, and signs with wire posts for sticking in the front yards, t-shirts.

I know, you have to spend money to make money. That is so true.

Well, I am taking a break, not lunch break, just a break. The dentist gave me a mouthwash to be used in the morning and at night, and by the taste of it, they could use it for a weight loss product. I used it this morning, rinsed real well, but still have that lingering taste. Right now don't even want to put any food in there.

So far this morning, I have done 2 loads of laundry, planted 4 mature daylilies, and 3 seedling, moved 2 clumps of spiderwort, got another batch of tomatoes, etc in roasting for more spaghetti sauce. Still have a bucket left to go, so may make another batch when this one finishes.

I have a cornish game hen marinating for tonight, cooking some beets, don't know what they will turn into. this was DH request.

I need to go out and dig some daylilies that are for a trade, and may even have time to hit the J.C. Penney sale.

Tomorrow, I will start the ironing and getting ready to get the suitcase packed and ready to go. I wonder if the airlines web sites have a list of prohibited items in carry ons listed, need to go check that.

Well DH just came in DMIL got a good report from the cardiologist, no med changes, but wants to check blood pressure daily, so add that to my list of things to do.

Well, gotta go, and see what else I can find to do.

BBL

Hi everyone
Defoe so glad to hear your DMIL got a good report. Sorry you have one more thing added to your list of many to do, though. Where does it all end! LOL More tomatoes? Wow, you are sure getting a bumper crop. Just send me a jar of that sauce. You may need another's opinion. You know it *never* hurts to have another's view. LOL

Molly, I hope the advertising works well for you. Sure wish you did painting in GA. I could sure use one.

Maria, how's your cold today? What about baby and Mom?

Okay, lunch is over ... had tuna and crackers and need to throw some wash over in the dryer. Looks like everyone is wacking that monster a lick or two lately. LOL He must be kin to a cat! LOL We did get rain yesterday evening, so I didn't have to water today. Yea!

I01, would send you some, but want to test it first here, make sure nobody ends up dead!!

No the laundry monster has many more than 9 lives, maybe that is 9 lives per day! I have whacked him with 2 loads today too.

Glad you got the rain, it is overcast here, with mention of showers, but nothing so far.

Molly, if you would agree to travel some, I could give you this whole house to do. I would cook and provide accommodations also.

Decided that instead of hitting the sale today, need to get some reports for the church caught up. The Kentucky wide conference meeting is Sept 16, and I haven't done one report. Have about 30 to fill out. So maybe can make a dent in that job.

The roasting tomatoes are smelling good, wish they made an air freshner that smelled like this.

Well back to the reports.

BBL

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Bonnie,

I will sure consider it. For interior work, it could get me through the fall and winter. Please d-mail me.

I'll tell you what. I have been poor and I have been un-poor, and I would much rather be un-poor. I would like to be able to go out and buy a new vacuum cleaner, or lacking that, be able to hire someone to come in again to clean my house.

Okay, I just finished kinda cleaning. I have put it off for so long, the dust was flying and making me think I have allergies (which I don't). There was a layer this thick on the wood and glass. I can't believe how much the big dogs get dribble lips over the coffee table and wooden chest. Doggie saliva mixed with dust, turns into grime.

So I dusted, swept, cleaned the bird cages, doggie rugs and then mopped. But I can't vacuum. Shoot, if I had -0- carpets, I could buy a dust mop and who would need a vacuum.

Okay, I think I am done complaining, thanks for listening.

It isn't raining yet, but cloudy, maybe I can go out and puts some plants in now. I think I will do that.

GM, all,

It's another wonderful day in the neighbourhood! The sun is out, the sky is quite blue, the fog has burned off and it's supposed to be in the upper 70's to low 80's this weekend. Drat! Wouldn't you know it's my weekend to work?!?

This Island County Fair is this weekend too and of course, as usual I have to work. I don't think I've gotten a chance to go to the fair in the last 9 years if I'm counting correctly. Ahhhh, well. I love fairs, even if they are little home-style ones like the Island County Fair. Next month will be "The Puyallup" (pronounced phew-al-up) and hubby and I usually reserve a motel room, drive down and go to the fair, stay the night and go again the next day before we head back to the island. It's quite the affair and I most enjoy the exhibits the 4H'ers create and I love to go to the concessionaires stands and see what's for sale. I started using Quik-N-Brite years ago for cleaning because of the Puyallup Fair and I've never stopped using that product. It's the best all purpose cleaner and has no fumes to bother my asthma.

My BIL had knee surgery yesterday afternoon for a torn meniscus and is home this morning, actually doing quite well. I'm surprised as he usually has so much trouble with anesthesia because of his sleep apnea, but this time he sailed through the surgery without any troubles. He'll be down for a few days, but is allowed to go potty and such, just take it easy. He and my DH have a fishing trip planned in British Columbia the weekend after Labour Day, so he has until then to get his tuchas up and moving. DH didn't want to go on the trip because Mum has been so ill, but I told him to go, no matter what. We can't change fate and we can't plan our destiny's. He needs the break from the action as much as I do at times. His job is so stressful and with the added burden of my Mum, he needs a good mind-emptying break.

Well, I'm off to the shower and to pack my supper for work this evening. I hope everyone has a wonderful day. Thank you all for your wonderful support and caring during this difficult time. I'm finding my footing and I'm working hard to keep it all together.

I send my regards to all, ~Babs~

Hi Folks,

Just checking in from an Internet place near my daughter's house. We had a good flight but I barely slept at all last night. We were here in Vancouver at 9 am Vancouver time. Just found some lunch and are going back for a nap before we all hit the road later this afternoon.

No problems at the airport. I took my shoes off because I know the buckles trigger bells and whistles but I got a lip gloss on in my pocket and a plastic crochet hook and en route did round 3 of 20 afghan squares.

Will check in again later.

Back again, feel just awful, called the Dr. said I wiil be called back, that was 3 hours ago. Have not done anything today except water first thng then picked the remnants of my flowers including the last of the roses that usually bloom in abundance till frost

here is one more photo of the last flowers I have, The flash did not work for some reason so it is kind of dark, especially the cultivated joe-pye-weed (sp) that is the only flower right now in full bloom.

Glad you had no problems at the airport Ann, wish you a wonderful journey

Babs, will email you very soon

Babs ... hugs&blesings to you and family.

Defoe ... if you figure out how to make an air freshener from that ... please send me one. LOL

Molly, I'm with you on the housework. I've decided I don't like carpet anymore. I like my house ok but sure wish I had my old one back ... well, not the house but those *gorgeous old oak hardwood floors.

Maria ... if I had some ... I'd send you flowers. Will these do? they're left from the beginning of the year. ;)

Okay ... I've got a hot date to get ready for! :-)

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Afternoon - sheesh, haven't done much of anything today. Did two loads of laundry, dishes, and made two beds. My folks showed up early for lunch. We played scrabble (I won 2x!!) had lunch and gave DSF a haircut.

My DS/DIL came over for a swim, so everyone hung around until DH came home from work. I love days like this!! Now everyone is gone and it's lonely!!

The lebanese meat pies are made out of lamb, snuba beans and wrapped in wheat and fried. They look like a football and are wonderful!! We had them and two different kinds of syrian bread- a cheese bread and a spinach one. Oh they were to die for!! That and a platter of red grapes and we were all happy!! My mom also brought some fresh humus too...

Vi - glad the flight went smoothly and nothing crazy happened!!

Maria, is your cold making you feel rotten? Hope you get some relief soon. (darn docs= don't they know you are waiting!!) Thanks for the instructions for flower arranging. I just cannot make mine look decent. I am the type of person that learns by doing. Mine look like Molly's - a wad stuck in a jar. Oh, speaking of jars. ....When my sister was visiting she got me a squat jar with a grid type lid. It is fun to poke flowers in the lid. I have it full of dahlias right now. But it still looks like "I" did it!

Molly we have a little local paint store in our town. (suburb of a huge town north of us) anyhow, I frequent there - I know I pay more, but I so value their advice. Do you have any of those little locals there? People are always asking for painters there.

defoe - one more job for you...yikes...I have a blood pressure thingy here. I got it for DH, hoping he would take his BP (I know it is outta sight as he is beet red often). It is easy to do - just slip a cuff on, velcro it and push a button. Thank goodness my BP is ok!!

Well, time to think for something for dinner...

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

|Maria, sorry that you are feeling so rotten. Hope you get some meds prescribed for you. Rest is a good thing for fixing a cold, don't fret about being inactive.

Babs, wish you had the weekend off to go to the fair. It would be a good break for you. DH's fishing trip will do a world of good. You are right, we can't alter fate, and what would he do if he was there? Might be a comfort to you. A big job.

Well the spaghetti sauce is done, I made this a true sauce, strained out all the seeds and stuff, haven't filled the jars yet, as I need to start something to eat. I am going to pressure can this, so will give you a total count later on.

The cornish hen is in the oven, as is an oregano potato dish, a salad, DH his beets, and I guess that is it. Just may go to sleep if I sit long, so up at back at it.

Hi, Folks... it's been a long day for me today. I've been gone almost 12 hours and I'm pooped. Thought of lots to tell you while I was driving but it will have to wait for some supper and a rest... or maybe even tomorrow.

Got ALL the rest of Gracie's stitches out tonight. Didn't have to wrap her up, just lots of cuddling and cooing.

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

wow, you all have been busy today. I just got home and thought I would pop in real quick.

Maria, what a handsome youngman. I love newborns. Its when they turn into what I have that I start running the other way. I sure that you are feeling better soon. No fun getting a cold.

DH is doing okay. He is in constant pain but takes pain pills that relieve alot of it. Since this is a work related injury the county had to hire a person to drive DH around town so DH can take his pain pills as needed without risk of not being able to drive. So long as he takes his pills at the scheduled time he does really well. If he forgets and the pain begins it usually takes hours for the pain to dull enough for him to walk or be civil. The scheduled surgery keeps getting pushed further back because of the hoops the insurance has him jumping through. He goes to see the actual surgeon on the 23rd again but that doctor is waiting on a report from the pain management doctor. The pain management doctor cant complete that report until DH sees him on the 30th. DH doesn't set up the appointments, they are set up by the insurance company. So for right now he sees the surgeon on the 23rd and asks that they have his insurance set up another appointment for after the 30th , then the pain management dr on the 30th and hopefully not to long afterwards back to the surgeon. Gosh I hope I explained that correctly.....

Defoe, so glad that your are now metal free. DD had braces and the day she got them off she had me take her to the store so she could buy some taffy. She loves it and couldn't eat it for 2 years.

Molly, I love the crepe Myrtle. While at the Daniel Stowe botanical gardens I saw a crepe myrtle that had a smooth bark and it was spotted with green, grey and tan. Are all crepe myrtles that way???

Meezer, I hope your golf game was a good one. DH loves to golf but is not allowed because of the back. He is really missing it. I am not a golfer. Never understood why people would chase a small ball around in the heat to hit it in a hole with a stick. Liking sports would probably help in understand and that is something I have never done.

Mary, not sure if you were asking about my cat named PITA but yes, that is exactly what it stands for.

Well DH wants to have Applebee's oriental salad for dinner so I am getting off here and hurrying before he changes his mind.

Have a great night all, Casey

So, you might ask, what did I do on my long trip with NO radio?

Well, I started with trying to recite some of the things I learned in school a thousand years ago. Here's a good example of alliteration...

Quoting:
To sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock,
In a pestilential prison, with a life-long lock,
Awaiting the sensation of a short, sharp shock,
From a cheap and chippy chopper on a big black block!

Then there was the Prelude to Evangeline, an epic poem by Longfellow... I've forgotten much of the history but the Brits moved all the Frenchmen off Nova Scotia in the middle 1700's. Most went to what is now Louisiana and are now Cajuns.

Quoting:
THIS is the forest primeval. The murmuring pines and the hemlocks,
Bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight,
Stand like Druids of eld, with voices sad and prophetic,
Stand like harpers hoar, with beards that rest on their bosoms.
Loud from its rocky caverns, the deep-voiced neighboring ocean
Speaks, and in accents disconsolate answers the wail of the forest.

This is the forest primeval; but where are the hearts that beneath it
Leaped like the roe, when he hears in the woodland the voice of the huntsman?
Where is the thatch-roofed village, the home of Acadian farmers --

Much of the rest of the time was singing old hymns... Can't get a grip on how many verses I have lost. When I was a senior in high school, we had a huge youth choir at my church. We had a barbershop quartet of boys, and a song I remember is "Eziekeiel saw the wheel..."
Quoting:
Ezek'el saw the wheel
'Way up in the middle o' the air
Ezek'el saw the wheel
'Way in the middle o' the air
The big wheel moved by faith
The little wheel moved by the grace o' God
A wheel in a wheel
'Way in the middle o' the air

Apparently there are many Biblical references to folks seeing a moving, lighted wheel in the air. Same with images in very early paintings. Early spaceships?

What dismayed me was how many songs/verses I could NOT remember, like verses to "Green Go the Rushes, Ho" or some title like that. I did get into a lot of the foot-stompin' Baptist songs my youth choir (200 strong) used to sing, and had a good time today. The Lord will forgive me for not being able to carry a tune!

Our student body president (3500 students) went to my church. He always introduced himself as "Obslob Grubblewich". He went to law school in MS and practices law there. I keep waiting to see his name as govenor, or senator.

Oh, the purpose of the trip: Gastro Doc wants more tests, so that will take up much of next week. I did stop to see my regular dentist in Asheville hoping that since I've been a patient a long time, he'd see me. Office was closed early. Stopped by where I had my last colonoscopy (couldn't remember the name, just location) and they are going to send Path. reports to my new doc. Sure hope I don't have to do that test again soon.

Well, I lied. The OTHER thing I did a lot was to reflect on how important all my DG friends are!

Back again, my roots are blonde, the golf game was an embarassment, but I picked up two delicious subs from a sub shop that has set up business again after twenty years out of the picture. They overexpanded in the 80s, and went bust, but they had the best subs. One of their original ads included the line "Where's the meat" which was subsequently ripped off by another fast food chain, changed to "Where's the beef?' DD was thrilled to have one for lunch and I am now promoted to Best Mom. She even remembered the names they called them, which had completely faded from my memory banks. (Ham and cheese was a Gold Coast, Turkey was Miles Standish, etc.) I didnt get home until 5, so dinner was the hamburger fall back, tacos. Yes, V'ann, it is versatile!

Carat, we are at the mercy of insurance company, health care management and corporate oversight, and all we can do is grit our teeth. They make massive profits and we wait for what should be our easily and readily available care. By the way, golf for me is just a handy way to avoid housework. I certainly see no improvement in sight, but it's a super nice bunch of ladies my age, and we enjoy each other's company.

Molly, that crepe myrtle is an eyecatcher. They would never survive our winters. What a beautiful vivid color. I have two hardy hibiscus that managed to survive last winter, right next to the vulnerable Japanese Maple, and they have both bloomed. If they make it through this year's, next year should be a treat for the eyes. Have you ever arrived home without a load of plants stashed in your vehicle? I think it is brilliant to put your photo in your ad. I'm sure there are lots of single women who don't relish the idea of some strange man in their living quarters.

Good job Darius on getting Gracie's stitches out! It's not really a painful process, but mostly cats don't like to be restrained, so you did a masterful job of getting them out without stressing her. I don't mind long road trips alone, except for the part where I have to get out and move around after my butt's gone numb. I don't think I can remember a single thing I memorized in my youth, which was also a thousand years ago. Give me a rock and roll song from the seventies and I'm fine. Was W.S. Gilbert the other half of Sullivan? The meter sounds familiar. I thik the Cajuns were first moved to Arcadia, and then migrated to Louisiana from there.

Babs, I think the small county fairs are the best. I love to see the crafts, canning, needlework, bakery, flower displays. Our big one has become more and more a place for vendors to sell Tshirts, kitchen tools, knickknacks, and such. At least they still have the livestock barns so I can go gaze into the big brown cow eyes, and watch the baby chicks, kids, lambs, and such.

Is IO1 home from her date yet/? Huh? Huh?? We need to know all about it! Her DH is certainly a keeper!

Most air freshening sprays are not appealing to me, but put a little garlic or cinnamon or lemon in the air and I'm a happy camper.

Maria, you probably contacted that cold on the airplane breathing all that recirculated air. I hope you are rid of it soon so you can spend some time with that new addition to the family, Sam.

Tgif, isn't mither an Irish or Scottish term? I've heard it and read it in books, but never knew what the origin was. I hope she does well and has enough good days that you can enjoy her for a long while to come.

FC, mudt be real quiet in your house with the kids back in school. On a dark day with all that silence, I might have tucked myself back in for a little snooze with my furry friends. They are so happy when I do that, they race me for the bed! The breakfast rolls sound so good!

Time to shut this down for the night. Might rain some. Hope so. We're off to baseball tournement early tomorrow, depending on the weather, so I'll see you later in the day. Have a good one. ~~~~ goodnight!

Sheila

I'm home!! Oh I had such a wonderful time. I went to see Elvis! No ... he isn't dead. I just thought so! LOL Went to see ...
Elvis to the Max
29th Anniversary Remembrance Tour
Starring Max Pellicano as Elvis

He plays in Los Vegas ... so Casy ... have you ever heard of him? Oh, it was so much fun! I got to go back stage and meet him, get a hug and an autograph. We had VIP tickets and were on the 7th row. :-)

Y'all forgive me for not commenting tonight but I'm tired and want to get a bath and put this bod in the bed!

Hi all, I had the 'plumber' appt yesterday. Now I have a procedure to be done next Thurs. at the same day surgery place. The doc knows for sure that I have urethritis which is narrowing of the urethra. They put you in lala land, do a cytoscopy and inspect the inside of the bladder to check for problems there, like the interstitial cystitis my family doc was talking abt. And then they shoot dye up the ureters into the kidney. And then they watch the dye come back down to see how well it travels. Now doesn't that sound like fun?

Oh, but the best is yet to come... the last step is stretching the urethra. And after the drugs wear off, I have been advised that it feels similar to passing razor blades for the first while. (shudder, shudder) My, but I am really looking forward to this!!! And the 'stretch' is good for anywhere from 6 months to 3 years before problems start again. grrrr! Getting old is really the absolute pits sometimes.

One thing, it has diverted my mind from worrying abt the Sept. surgery. Always a silver lining, right?

We had a nasty storm come thru this afternoon. It was only abt 20 miles wide and went south of SF so all I saw out the windows was some rain. Five miles south of SF they had high winds and a couple of semi blew off the interstate. They also had abt 5 inches of rain. A few trees down, not too bad, really. We had 2.9 inches of rain in Inwood. My shephard's hook had two pots on it and it bent just above the ground. Both pots ended up sitting on the sidewalk, not even tipped over. I was quite surprised to see it had bent that much. A little pushing and it's back upright but I think I better stick to the birdfeeders on it. I bet it's much weaker where it was bent and those wet pots are just too heavy for it.

If you're interested in history, here's an article on Acadia (no 'r'). The Frenchmen had a year to pledge allegiance to Britian and when the year was up, they refused so out they went. I was surprised to read that most of the Atlantic states were part of early Acadia. Fascinating stuff! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acadia

'Green Go The Rushes, Ho' -- I remember that one! What is your one ho? One is one and all alone and evermore shall be so! Green go the rushes, ho! What is your two ho? Two, two, the lily white doves.... um what's the next part? think it'll be on google? lol guess I will go see. brb

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Fascinating. The original had an "r" in it, and if you look at the dates, you will see that is my era....LOL I couldn't ride my dinosaur to school because of the glaciers, his feet kept sliding on the ice.

Good evening,

You've all been talking away today, no way I'm going to be able to catch up with everyone.

Maria, sorry you've been feeling lousy. Maybe we've both got the same nasty bug that's been circulating in the area. Hope you can get something to make you feel better quickly. I figure I've got a day or two of "crappy" left and then I should be pretty much over it.

V-ann, hope you're able to catch up on sleep so that you can enjoy your visit.

darius, that's quite a way to entertain yourself on a long drive. I have a bad tendency to get hypnotized by the road, at least if it's a long stretch of relatively straight and level highway. I remember that bit of "Evangeline" too. Hated that poem. The only literary work I hated even more was "The Merchant of Venice" which I got stuck with two years in a row in school. I liked Shakespeare, had read most of his plays on my own, but man, school sure wrecked THAT one for me. You must be a wizard with cats or you've been gifted with an exceptionally calm one! I have to make a towel straitjacket for mine to even give them medication, never mind trying to take out stitches.

I01, thanks for the encouragement. I thought that I had fixed one of those links, but obviously, I hadn't. Hopefully tonight's will be better.

Babs, thanks for checking in. Wish there was more that we could all do to help you.

Bonnie, your menu sounded very good. We dined on cardboard pizza tonight. Fridays, I don't get out of the store until 8 at the earliest.

Casey, hope things work out well for your DH. When did his back start bothering him this much? Did something set it off or has it just been building up for ages?

Molly, the magnetic signs are a good idea, especially because there are various city ordinances about signs both on and off vehicles. I assume that you have business cards to hand out if anyone shows an interest.

Sheila, I hope that you get at least a few moonflowers before it gets too cold for them. I hated to lose the bulk of the buds to frost the year that I grew some of them. Maybe next year I'll try again and see if I can set something up to start them even sooner--- problem is that the vines get so long so quickly that they'd probably permanently attach themselves to the inside of the greenhouse.

Mary, sorry you haven't been able to participate in as many rides as you'd planned, but glad that both horses seem to be on the mend.

kooger, sorry for all your medical trials. There are lots of rude rhymes about the "Golden Days" out there. My mother had a pretty good one from one of the senior citizen groups, but I couldn't get away with trying to quote it here.

It's time for me to try to set up the links again, then climb off to bed. Tomorrow's another work day. Goodnight and sweet dreams to all.

Millbury, MA(Zone 5a)

Okay, hopefully, this time I've got the right link. Here goes
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/641246/

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Okay, back after cleaning the kitchen, going to the garden where I collected more tomatoes, more sauce for tomorrow. I had 6 pints of sauce today. Sit and read a spell, after the shower, and finally on DG to catch up for the day.

Darius, why don't you get a good CD player, and some CD's and use that on your long trips. If I don't have some interesting distraction, tend to get drowsy, and that means stopping, walking, getting something to drink, and then back in the car. When we go to the Prizer Point RU in Sept, I am thinking about some audio books to listen to while on that 5 hour trip.

Kooger all the plumbing appointments sound like Chinese torture. Just be thankful that they give you something to put you in lala land, and hope that the "razor pain" is something that is short lived. Anything bladder or kidney related is painful. Several years ago, we were on vacation in Las Vegas, contracted a UTI, and called my mother to tell her to make an appointment with Dr, as soon as I could get there after landing at the airport. Drank copious amounts of water, and cranberry juice, made it more bearable, but surely not comfortable till I got the antibiotics to get rid of the infection.

M5, I have never tried golf, but it would seem that it is good exercise, and an escape from house work, throw in some companions and seems like a good day. The subs sound wonderful.

kooger, isn't Google amazing, it even returns us to times lost, and lyrics as well.

I01, Oh, your date sounds so very much fun. Glad that you got "back stage" and that you had a good time. Think that Danny is a real keeper, but if you decide he isn't maybe we can work out a trade??? Do you do country, horses, cats dogs, an enormous garden? I could try "city" and see if it works. Maybe we best keep what we have, you know the "known vs the unknown"

Carat, so sorry that the insurance is ruling your domain. Ain't it the pits to have them tell you when you need to go, and in what sequence? Sorry, can't remember if PITA is a dog or cat, but evidently was named early and properly. Miss Boots has started scratching on my couch, (never before) so bought her a scratching post yesterday, do you think that she has even acknowledged it, NOT. Well, guess I will have to get out the spray bottle that she was trained with, and the next scratching on my couch, she gets a good drenching with water.

Well, this has been a long busy day, so will sign off for now, hope everyone has a good night, and awakes refreshed and ready to tackle a new day. Tomorrow is supplemental errand day, library, bank etc. Might try to stop at some yard sales, and home again to tackle whatever gets in my way. The laundry monster is dead at my house for the time being, but come tomorrow, it is sure to rear it's ugly head. The other side of the crushed brick area is waiting, so may try to start on it.

Good Night John Boy.
