cool plant sale coming Sept 16

thank you! We are proud of both of them. They are both good people with good hearts. Anything after that is just icing on the cake!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Hey Pixy - I am going to the Newcastle plant swap. It is a short trek for me, and I may have things to trade/give, depending on how quickly I can accomplish necessary landscaping tasks. There's too much dividing going on in my yard, and I definately need another 2 months to consider it done for the season...

Super! See you there, too!. It's still too early for me to be digging stuff up, but I have stuff in pots to trade and by that time I should be able to do some digging. Dmail me if there is something in particular you are looking for.

So. Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8b)

I lost my long time companion Boomer last month and I'm looking for a weeping shrub or dwarf tree I can put in a large pot to commemorate him. Keep you eyes open for me... I'm planning on being there but I may not be able to move as fast as some of you younger 'uns.

What a sweet looking boy! Are you looking for a flowering tree or something like a Japanese Maple? If I see something like what you want, I'll grab it and stick it in my cart. You can always take it back to the vendor if you decide you don't want it.

I'm bringing a long time friend of mine; a woman in her early 70's who has pretty bad rheumatoid arthritis. I took her to Northwest Bonsai last weekend and she was just overwhelmed with it. She'll be moving slower than you will, Katy, and I'm bringing a chair so she can sit if she needs to. If I remember correctly, they have a vendor who sells hot dogs or something like that, and I think there were picnic tables for sitting. Is that right, Herpst? She's always wanted to go to this sale but never has because she doesn't drive on the highway.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Sitting here pouting cuz I don't get to go. Not fair!!! ;o( LOL I hope you guys have a grand time! You have to post pics of all your spoils!

Ohh, thanks for reminding me! I'll bring the camera!

Bonn, Germany

where is "newcastle"?

Here you go Hoodsport:
http://www.ci.newcastle.wa.us/index.asp
Are you going to be in this area?

Bonn, Germany

Pixydish;
Why didnt you just say renton, lol. Yes.

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

I can not believe, after the weather we've had over the last 4 months, that it is going to rain THIS weekend!!!!!

We're going to have to start sacrificing virgins again. It's the only thing that works.

Hoodsport, I didn't say 'renton' because I couldn't remember whether it was Renton or Redmond. I always get those two confused. Will we see you there? Do I know you? Maybe we have met somewhere before?

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

Pixy, if you can find a virgin to sacrifice after the winter we had, more power to you!

Well, I recall that early in the spring when we were worried that the sun would never shine, someone found one disguised as a computer nerd type. It seemed to work. They tend to hang together, so maybe I'll get lucky and find another one. I'm not ready for the rains to start, and besides, the weather man is rarely correct this far in the future. I'm banking on that.

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

Yes but all the people from that group have had all summer to make sure they no longer qualify. You'll have to find a new, unsuspecting batch.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

Wheres Herspt and Skydivr ?

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

It wont rain, it would'nt dare!!!!

Viv

I just checked the weather report and Saturday looks good, not that the weather is ever predicted accurately necessarily, but if we all sacrifice some virtual virgins at least in thought, it will help. We must all pull together! Our collective energies can made a difference! We must make no room in our minds for rain.
I fear we have been abandoned by Skidivur, but I have noticed a new friend - Hoodsport. Perhaps he can contribute to the cause to show his support. Herpst is still around, but likely busy with new students.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

LOL guess I'll have to get going on that imaginary virgin! NO RAIN, NO RAIN, thats my chant!

Sky dint have coffee with me... that stinker!! I miss them both... umm Bonn eh? Cant wait to meet everyone.

Pic of my new light setup, might help with the winter doldrums this year... thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

FYI. Earlier today, we discovered that "hoodsport" was the third username registered by a member who was removed from DG a couple months ago (their second username was removed a few weeks ago.) We have now removed "hoodsport" from the site as well. From a quick search of "hoodsport's" posts, most of them were in this forum, and since they had posted to this thread, I thought I'd let you-all know why this new member suddenly stopped posting.

Thanks,
Terry

Viv, if you are serious about wanting to prevent winter doldrums, you need one of these:

www.alaskanorthernlights.com

This is the number one treatment for Seasonal affective disorder, which I believe is a significant cause of unhappiness in this part of the country. The symptoms can be similar to depression, but they don't have to be. For many people it manifests in tiredness, that 'blah' feeling, not sleeping well, craving carbohydrates, irritability - to be brief. Even people who don't have the full blown 'disorder' (a word to which I take great exception...) benefit from using these lights. These lights really, really work and are covered by most insurance companies, at least in part. This is the brand I have, but it's not the only one out there and I see that they have raised their prices a lot. This kind of light is not the same as 'full spectrum' lighting or 'grow' lights. The number of Lux is the most important thing in getting a treatment light. Read the info on their site, though. It's very good and useful. Lots of people make these. Do a google search on 'SAD treatment lights' and you'll get more info and websites that sell them. This treatment protocol was developed at the University of Washington. In choosing one, be certain it has the right number of Lux, and then go for the biggest one you can afford. That will allow you to sit farther away from it and sometimes more than one person can use it at once. You don't have to look directly at the light, but the light has to hit your cornea. So during the darkest part of winter, I eat breakfast in front of mine and that's it.

You see this huge response to your little light photo? I think it's time I get my light out!!! The darkness of this cloudy day is already pushing my buttons!

Thanks, Terry. Sadly, I thought as much.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

Very intresting, I'm checking it out, thanks Pixy..

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Pixy, how did you know about Hoodsport? I know you asked "him/her" if you had met before. And thanks for the info on the light for treating seasonal affective disorder - I am definitely going to look into that as the last couple years the gloomy winter has gotten to me (not enough to move somewhere else, though!!).

I don't really know how I knew, it just 'felt' the same. His posts, coming out of 'left field', had the same feel to them as the ones before.
Definitely look into the treatment light. The research is very, very clear about how helpful they are. They are a mainstream treatment option.

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

Hoodsport was his third incarnation -- all three of them "felt" the same.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

And I would bet that he will be back too.

Well, in some ways that would be okay. I'm sure there is a reason why he needs to keep changing his ID. It's wierd, but not necessarily harmful. Of course, if he felt threatening to anyone, that's another story altogether.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, to be honest, no it wouldn't be okay if this person returned yet again.

When we ban someone, it's because they have repeatedly and deliberately ignored our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) guidelines, and have been repeatedly warned by admins, to no avail. When it becomes evident they don't intend to work with us to correct the problems, we're left with only one choice - to revoke their membership. It's thankfully rare, and it's unpleasant, but sometimes it happens.

Many active members have asked us to change their usernames for a myriad of legitimate reasons, and that's a pefectly fine with us. But sneaking back in under another name after being banned is very different.

In this case, the person took some rather elaborate steps to mask his/her true identity and used a "spoof" IP address when they signed up for a third time. (The second time was pretty easy to spot because of the IP address they frequently logged in under - we found them when we reviewed some Garden Watchdog reviews that sounded similar to one another.)

As you can gather, it's frustrating and IMHO, a waste of our resources to keep vigil against people who have been asked/ told to leave, given reasons for why we are banning them, and told explicity to not return. And it boggles the mind why someone would keep returning after being banned. (Speaking personally, I know I wouldn't "darken that doorstep" ever again, unless it was to come hat in hand and ask for a second chance - as myself, not disguised as another user. And we have had a few people return - some successfully, some wound up leaving again. But we're certainly willing to give folks a second chance if it's apparent they've realized what went wrong the first time around.)

We'd much rather devote our days to creating new forums and features for the DG community - and our spare time gardening here and outside in our real gardens ;o)

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

Just goes to show that you have to be careful, even in well moderated venues these days. Thank-you to our Admins for doing their best to keep our little Edens serpent free. :-)

So. Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8b)

Well, the whole thing saddens me. I can't imagine his motive but I never sensed anything ulterior or threatening. Just a bit unorthodox. Um, maybe a bit over the top?

I'm sure that there are good reasons before banning anyone. Going to such elaborate means to disguise your identity is just a bit on the dark side IMHO. I thought maybe he had a social phobia or some other anxiety disorder and that this was the only way he could interact with people in any meaningful way. But there are limits even to that, and treatment is available if that is the suffering he has. I wish him well.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Hi Gang,

I'm still here & have been reading posts but with (Pixy was correct) students and school and meetings and keeping all the pots watered, I've had less time to post. Things are calming down now and, like Arnold, "I'll be back"! Looking forward to seeing y'all tomorrow at the sale.

Yea! thanks for checking in Herpst! I was beginning to feel so abandoned!

6:22 AM????? That is positively uncivilized!

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh Pixydish,

I assure you that it is only the hour that is uncivilized. O.K. I'm pretty uncivilized before the first cup of caffeine but then I'm better.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Too bad for me I won't be able to go to the sale. My family decided to do our annual cider pressing tomorrow. But good for my pocketbook most likely. I hope you all have a fabulous time! Maybe next year for me.

Well, mauryhill, sounds like you have more 'pressing' matters to attend to. If I don't get to bed, I won't be awake for the sale. Maybe you can make the spring sale.

Sumner, WA(Zone 8a)

Woo-hoo! It's plant sale day!!

Waaaah! I have no money!!

LOL. Oh, the conundrum.
