cool plant sale coming Sept 16

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh, nothing like that. I usually get there at around 8:40.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

thank you kindly!

Marysville, WA

Ok, someone PLEASE coordinate this so we can ALL MEET, I may be available to car poool.

The fleeting image.....ROFLOL!! Vizz, I say bring the chair! It's amazing how you can push a crowd when someone is in a wheelchair! Plus, the guilt factor alone is worth it, in case we need that card up our sleeve! In addition, you can sit if you get tired. Or I can sit if I get tired. I'm not proud.

Now, in terms of the sale being " genuinely fun to be outside on a lovely Sepetember morning among like-minded people and tons of plants", clearly you did not attend the sale I last attended, Herpst! Can we talk about the weather for just a moment? My poor son, NOT a die-hard plant lover, was with me that day. We're talking wind at approximately 25 knots, for all the sailors out there. Driving rain. Tents blowing over. And freezing cold as well. And there I am with my shopping cart, trying to hold an umbrella, which I can't believe I even had in the car, and going around once more to make sure I hadn't missed something good. The vendors were sodden and sullen and were starting to pack up. I vaguely remember going back out for a pot of trout lilies. I think I've blocked out the rest. I hope it was worth it. Probably it was.

But Herpst has dangled hydrangeas in front of me, so I'll be there. It will be a vendor that has really unusual plants if I actually find a hydrangea that I either don't have, or actually want enough to squeeze it in. Maybe there will be a Purple Tiers. I believe I have just killed my third one. It was hiding underneath a larger plant, both still in pots, and my dh didn't see it to water it while I was gone for three days! I discovered it this afternoon, leaves crispy. I've soaked it, potted it in a larger pot, and now I remain on a hopeful vigil. I can't believe it. It's like I'm not supposed to have that one! And you KNOW that can't be true!

We can synchronize clothing later. We'll want to match, I'm sure!

I believe Herpst said 8:40 in the parking lot? How about if we meet by the rope gate at 8:40? I'm driving my van. It holds lots of plants.

Marysville, WA

PIXYDISH,
Easy for you to say, you dont have to drive an hour an a half, lol I love all you guys a LOT, but I am NOT getting up at 5 am, even for a plant sale.

Ski, I thought you lived in Olympia? On a saturday morning, should take you maybe an hour to get to Weyerhauser? Course, we'll be there for awhile. So you could come later if you want to hook up. I wouldn't get up at 5:00, either. I NEED my beauty sleep!

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Hey Pixydish,

Nope, Skidivur lives in Marysville, not far from the fake Lakewood.

I was at that sale this spring. Without an umbrella. And the carts were all taken so I was wandering around with sodden cardboard trays bending from the water and the weight of the plants. And I had to walk five miles to get there & back - uphill both ways - in the snow. Oh, wait, that's a whole other story. The weather at the fall sale is usually nicer.

So, 8:40 at the rope gate it is. Synchronized clothing? Hmmm. Is that what they wear for synchronized swimming? Because, believe me, this body ain't doing that! It's just not a pretty sight. I shower with my clothes on. I've covered all the mirrors in the house. I've purchased fogger machines for all the water features in the yard so that my reflected image won't frighten me. Perhaps it's time to have more "Slave to the goddess Flora" shirts printed. Or the whole group could wear those charming "I'm with stupid" tee shirts. When people outside our group ask "who is stupid", we can just give them that sympathetic look that says, "why, my dear, I thought you knew."

HERPST,
You have d-mail. And here is a pic of the REAL LAKEWOOD.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

Ski you just said you would car pool, and now your not coming!! I have to find another ride. J/K.
I will have a sign (Tads & Bitsie) and hopfuly they wont be there, and I will be with an Old Hippy. Driving my gas hog SUV, with the back seats removed, optium plant area. But plant godess know where in the blank I will plant them. I do have a backyard that is now delicated to the dog monster, dust bunny devils. If they would just go be with the dog godess, I would have sooooo much more garden area. (how long do dogs live?)
Pixy I have two burgs in ground second season, they are now four ft. tall and not a sign of a bloom, really nice huge leaves, they provide nice texture, like thats what I want.. .yahright. The others will go into the garage, and I wont have to worry about watering them, because the Old Hippy cares more about them than I. They are his babies,, lucky me.
8:30 at rope gate, unless it rains.

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

Vizz8
What kind of dogs are they?

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

Sharpai, and Chow mix..
Shepard, mastiff, chow, and the ever present wolf mix.
Here is a pic of them, checking out the raccoon family that took up housekeeping in our yard this spring.
They are both 9 yrs old now.. surly they cant live much longer!!!

As a general rule, canines in the 40 - 50 pound range live about 12 years I believe. Larger breeds live shorter lives and smaller breeds live longer. Some breeds are known for living unusually longer or shorter than other breeds their general size, but I don't have any specific information on your breeds. However, mixed breeds tend to be healthier than their purebred counterparts and therefore may live longer! Don't hold your breath. :-)

Awww geesh, cant get much more mixed than these dogs.

Sumner, WA(Zone 8a)

Katye -- here are some photos of the Weyerhauser Bonsai collection + some shots from inside the Rhodie gardens. The sale sounds like it's worth the trip, but with the addition of these sights it's definitely worth the trip from Sammamish.

From our trip there in May 2006 -

Herpst -- thanks for the info on this sale! I'm always keeping an eye out for new and interesting things for the garden. Maybe I'll bump into you guys if I get there early enough. LOL! :-)

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I think i will see if someone can make me a Tad and Bitsies' t-shirt! otherwise, a sign works well.
i will be driving from Sammamish, and plan to get there early, like 8:15ish. i'll figure out travel time, make a coffee purchase and try to be at the head of the line.
As far as apparel goes, stilettos work wonders as deterrents to line cutters and plant thievery. Herpst, don't worry - i would not place that burden on you; you may wear sensible shoes. talk about a fleeting image!
If someone can organize all of us - you know, so we all move in the same direction... this could be a major accomplishment as far as plant acquisitions are concerned. well, for us, that is.
if anyone from up this way needs a ride , i can coordinate with you: dmail me. however, i am sans computer for the next couple days, but will get back to you.
pixy - i have a hydrangea habit also, but am currently residing in the land of denial, and frankly, i don't care to move!
Tiff - thanks for the link - i will check it out.
i wouldn't dare miss this event - that's why i'm bringing the chair!

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Katye,

Thanks so much. I'm trying to cut down on my stiletto wearage.

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

Hmmm, a zepplin on stilettos ... Herpst I think you better be careful where you aim those points!

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

I think someone said that to Dolly Parton once. Funny thing, though, I think she was wearing loafers.

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

I have got to be more careful how I phrase things!

Hey, those were natural!
Okay, maybe we don't want a zeppelin in stillettos. Besides, his feet are likely to start hurting 5 minutes into the sale and I won't be able to be patient with the complaining. I'm thinking tennis shoes.
I don't know about the organizing part. I thought we were doing good just to be able to meet at the same time. when I'm plant shopping, I'm likely to take off without warning if I see a flashy leaf on the other side of the plant mall. It's hard to control me. But you can try. If Vizz brings the wheelchair, I plan to use that as a ramrod to wheel my way in to the best stuff. I can spot a hydrangea at 100 paces.
Skidivur, if that is the real lakewood, count me in. since you are my friends, I would not post a photo of this Lakewood's post office. Every person who works must be seriously depressed and is likely psychotic. I think they take pleasure in seeing how long a line they can maintain throughout the day. The slower they work, the longer the line gets. Therefore, I denounce them and their ilk. I drive to the friendly and cheerful post office in University Place. Believe me, I'm not very attached to this Lakewood, even though I've lived here for close to 20 years. Hard to believe it.

Herpst, if you see a strange looking woman cruising your street slowly, she is not looking for drugs or for a john. She is looking for your house. Be kind.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

OK I take offense!!! Strange looking woman..... ? Just cause I have glazed eyes, and my tounge is hanging out pointing in Herpsts direction, does not make me strange looking.

Does it?

Viv

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Organizing this crew would be like herding chickens or nailing jello to the wall. Let's keep it casual - if we meet at the starting gates, groovy, if not or if we miss some people, we could linger at the pick up area for a while. I agree with Pixydish - "I thought we were doing good just to be able to meet at the same time. when I'm plant shopping, I'm likely to take off without warning if I see a flashy leaf on the other side of the plant mall. It's hard to control me. " You know, all's fair in love and war. Was just joking about spreading out & grabbing everything & sorting later. Besides, I don't need any more plants! It's kind of like a married guy going to a singles bar & allowing himself to be seduced. However the consequences of the plant affair are a lot easier to deal with. One never knows who the green seductress will be.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Viv & Pixydish & Skidivur

You can cruise my hood anytime. The stranger you look, the better you'll fit in - We're a motley crew round here. Anyway, from the street, it doesn't look like a gardener lives here. Brown grass boring parking strips, etc. You actually have to get out of your car & come inside the gate to see the garden. If you call first, I'll put the hounds of hell away & we can walk around in relative peace.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

LOL, hounds of hell. OMG our dogs must be related?

RE: meeting, I think we should all..... is that something shinny over there.................

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh Vizz8,

I laughed so hard at the RE: meeting comment, that I started coughing & my head started pounding! It's funny because it's TRUE!

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm so glad I gave you a good laugh!!! But be careful will ya.

It was just a shinny piece of foil anyway.

Viv

Oh, Viv, LOL! I was referring to myself as the strange looking woman!
Meeting at the gate is good. Then, when we get inside, we can yell across at each other a lot. Then we can hang together and compare notes, then run into each other at different plant tables, then maybe do lunch at the hot dog counter. It will be a blast! We'll have to let each other know what we're looking for, if we know. Sometimes I have lists, sometimes I don't.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

Pixy, I figured that out when I relized my cruising was in a different thread... but same home. Great minds eh?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

my previous reference to organizing was more in the vein of basics like making it to the gate & comparing wish lists, pretty much as described in Pixy's last post. I don't mind being on the lookout for plants that others might want.
Too bad we don't qualify for a private viewing, pre-event.

Wouldn't that be just the greatest!

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

How do you qualify for a private viewing? Maybe we do and dont know it?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Hmmm, have to noodle this one. I'm sure there is a way.
The "DG contingency"???
One thing's for sure: if it were possible, I could shop quickly & play longer!

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

At the spring sale, Friday until 3:00 is reserved for members of the rhododendron species garden & Saturday is the day for everyone. They only do one day in the fall.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

rats....

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

For rats, I would suggest trying one's local pet store:)

Oh Hardy har har har!

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

I see Herpst is at it again.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

I just got back from a road trip to the midwest (family reunions), so I have just seen this thread. It sounds like a great plant sale. I may be able to make it, will know when the weekend of the event nears how swamped I am with other work. My garden is somewhat overrun with weeds after almost 3 weeks away, and I really need to be getting my classroom ready for school to start rather than puttering in the yard. In addition, I have several unfinished hardscape projects around my patio which I am trying to 'do-it yourself'...it is all an experiment as I've never done steps or paths before. It would be fun to meet people, though I really should not buy more plants before I do something with the previously purchased greenery langushing in pots on my back porch..

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh maruyhillfarm,

School will start, the kids will come & they'll never know if your room is ready or not. Play in the sun. We have 10 months of school, school, school ahead of us. As for doing something with the previously purchased greenery before buying more - The plants langushing in pots will be just fine. Put them in bigger pots. And if they are really suffering, you need to buy more plants as misery loves company. To quote the girl scout song, "Make new friends but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold." The lesson that this is clearly teaching is that we should always be buying more plants.

Hope to see you at the sale!
