What's Growing - Part 8

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Nancy - you go to plantfiles and click on 'add a plant 'and you fill in the info. I would rwrite down the genus and that from a different one before since I bet you don't have it memorized :) You create the entry and then you can add a photo or comments on it.

Thanks nap!
Al ~ That coleus sure is bright and cheerful..I guess if it HAS to get cooler it's the least Mother Nature could do for us.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

But Al, I don't know those things. I really am a dahlia-dunce. I have to be sure I'm picking the right one, don't I?

I remember that in grade school, my cousin wanted to know how to spell a word and the teacher told her to look it up in the dictionary. My cousin said, "How am I supposed to look it up in the dictionary if I don't know how to spell it???"

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

That's right - how are you going to learn if you don't do it.
Dahlia,Asteraceae,Dahlia - you fill them in

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Pix, thanks for the purple boost. I like glads anyway. I just came in from planting a purple daylily (Plum Perfect). that cosmos is so pretty. my birds planted some sunflowers for me, too. no blooms yet but buds. that pretty one must have self-seeded from last year, yes?

nap, that is a particularly pretty hosta bloom, but I look forward to mine blooming. the hummingbirds like them and anything with a flower on it looks good to me! I planted a couple of new hosta last week and one had a bud. it's actually going to bloom. I'll post when it's really open.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Thank you for your help, Al. Thank you all. Fortunately, if you put the wrong answer in the wrong blank, they let you know. But I did it.

And gram, over on the texture thread, sometimes I do feel that old!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Nancy - I wasn't sure when you entered yours, but there was one in there already. Now there's 2 LOL. They will correct it for you, enter the picture anyway and I'll complete the one that is already there.

took a picture of my lawn today

Al ~ Pretty lawn.....are the neighbors really that close??? I am sooooo not use to that, I think I would go nuts if I could actually hear my neighbors conversation!!! I'm guessing you get use to it? I truely can't imagine, but then again you would most likely find it too quite out here in the boonies.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

OMG, he even has a good lawn! I pay somebody to take care of mine, have automatic sprinklers, and it looks awful. I'm certainly not taking any pictures of it. My lawn service uses more organic stuff and fewer chemicals than some of the chains. I'm sure it'll bounce back but it's a little disappointing.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Boy, I knew I should have avoided plant files. I should have listened to myself.

Anyway, Al, I entered mine about 4:45, with a photo. The first one is mine. I didn't put in the 'dinnerplate' one. I doubt I'll go there again.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Pixie - I do live in a city. I live on a corner so I really only have 2 close neighbors.
I grew up in the country with no neighbors and yes it seems quiet when I go back there and I can't sit still to enjoy it.

Nancy - oh come on now, it's not like they are going to audit your plants now LOL

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Al ~ There are neighborhoods in the city that are like that...im about 15-17miles away from any city but I do go into them once a week, with dread. LOL I can smell the exhaust from the cars and trucks, makes me nausious. I'd rather smell the fresh cut grass and hay, and actually hear the birds, and even the coyotes. I have a pair of big beautiful Bald Eagles that have made a nest somewhere on the lake, and a hawk that I haven't positively identified as of yet. (pic below) So it is very hard for me to imagine living so close to neighbors, I'd probally see less of the wildllife.

Gram ~ Yes i believe the sunflower re-seeded it self...I wish this one would of. This was taken last summer.

I live in town, with a neighbor ten feet away on either side. I am used to it, have even seen one neighbor naked through my kitchen window

. The worst thing for me is going outside to garden for some peace and quiet, and all I hear is lawnmowers and chainsaws. There is always someone with an engine outside these days.....irritating.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thats what I mean...I couldn't stand the noise. I didn't mean to offend anyone...hope I didn't. I can hear the boats and such on the lake sometimes, and my neighbor with his chain saw or tractor but its more of a faint hum. Also in the city I noticed the sound of sirens more, very unnerving, puts me on edge as I know someone somewhere is in trouble.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm far from being in the country..guess you could say I moved from city-suburb to country-suburb. Where we lived before we were a block away from the local volunteer fire company, so the sirens were pretty constant and we were on a busy street. It's soooooo much quieter here. Our lot is about 3x the size of the old one, so the neighbors aren't as close and we have no 'behind' neighbor because we're on a lake. They pretty much design new homes so most of the windows are front & back so you don't have exposure to your neighbors if you don't want it. Ivy, I know what you mean, though. I used to look out my kitchen window doing dishes into someone's bathroom.

One thing I don't understand. All of the folks chose these lakeside lots, but on a nice summer evening or weekend there is rarely anyone outside (unless they're mowing). People have patios, decks, lawn chairs, hammocks, but rarely use them. I kind of appreciate the quiet & solitude, but it continually surprises me.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I became serious about gardening when I moved from a crowded surban lot (50 X 75) to a more suburban lot of just short of an acre. I like the quiet. I sometimes miss more of a neighborhood feel or being able to walk to a store or restauraunt.
I remember how excited I was to see deer when I first moved!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Dave ~ I still get excited when they come into the field out back. Lately a big majestic buck has been trotting through, I think he smells the 3 doe that have been bedding down in the grass at night. Coyotes are driving them out of the woods and into the high grass at night, closer to the house where I can watch them with the night scope. On my way back from my brothers Sat. night, a Bob Cat crossed the road about 100 ft in front of us! Talk about excited...I was jumpimg up and down in my seat like a kid screaming "Did you see that!!? Did you??" Poor D.H. just looks at me and smiles, doesn't say a word. He's a good man. LOL

Mystic, CT(Zone 6b)

Your DH sounds like my DH....LOL.

We are lucky here, we have the best of both worlds. I have nice neighbors, a strong neighborhood feeling, and we get lots of wildlife from the woods across the street. I thought last year, when the property was up for sale, that we would end up with no woods at all nearby. Luckily, the people who bought it are keeping it the way it is. Whew! It's nice to know that some people still value land for it's own sake, not what they can build on it.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

This daylily should not be blooming now but so happy it is, even if it's looking a wee bit on the rough side. It was shot by accident during target practice, it had little bullet holes in some of the leaves and they shot the scapes right off. I thought for sure it was going to die but low and behold she put out another scape and more leaves. It should of bloomed in July but I'm just glad it bloomed at all!
This is "Please Say Yes" .

Pixie, I think she said yes! I don't know what goes on at your place, but you gotta tell those guys to stop shootin' the plants ;^(

The one big down fall of "Country Livin"....hunters, im surrounded by them. They live in my house, they are related to me and even the mail lady hunts!!!!!!!!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Used to have hunters in the family, all our friends, target practice at our 'country friends' house on weekends. but somehow they outgrew it. and my son was never interested.

Postal worker with a gun - don't disgruntel her LOL

Hey everyone - great pics Pixie!. We've been having rain the last few days, so I haven't really been out in the yard. I wish I had more property so I could choose when I saw my neighbors. I don't have any privacy in my yard, so when I want peace and quiet, I have to get out there before they all wake up. I am lucky that the neighbors are all nice and considerate, but they do enjoy their motorcycles and music.

Beautiful photos, I am going to call you Pics-ie.

Pixie -your collage reminded me I haven't done anything with your dahlia ID, I will get to it.

here is a single full shot of my purple fountain grass, the largest it's every grown for me

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Geez Al! Is that grass 7-8ft?? More? Wow..I get creeped out on tall grass in the field, but that I wouldn't mind. Thats amazing and beautiful at the same time!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ivy,
Thanks for the compliment! I enjoy going out in the morning to snap them, but some times the flowers are a bit lazy and not opened all the way. I can only presume its the cooler weather as I find i'm not as eager as I was in say, July. Although the colder weather is making the color of the flowers more vibrant and I for one am loving it!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

The back green stuff - Silver Feather miscanthus is that tall for sure. The Purple Fountain is 4 ' or so. Just how short are you?

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Al, the fountain grass is very pretty. I'd love to try some, but anything resembling grass is promptly 'mowed' by the Canada geese. I'd probably have to fence it in if I wanted it to get over an inch high.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Al, that Fountain Grass is lovely.
Here is one on my Butterfly Bushes.

Nice and big Andy, I had Lochnich like that - but a lot smaller.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Lochnic? A type of butterfly bush?

Pics-ie, All your plants look so lush & green. You really do good work.

(Especially for someone your size)
