What's Growing - Part 8
Al, that is one amazing display. It must be something to see in person. The colors are wonderful. and just think...you don't have to bend over to deadhead ;-)
looks like a sweet dog, Al. he's not 6' tall, too, is he?
hey, I got a helenium on sale today...I think it's Zimbelstern. There was a sale at the nursery and they only had one variety. and since I don't have any....it followed me home.
he's a good boy
I'm working on my bed where I am putting my ones in pots for next year.
Had to look yours up, here's a big list
http://www.samshrub.co.uk/helenium/helenium.htm
Al - They are really impressive.
Dawg's left eye doesn't show any white...did he get stung or is it just the light reflection?
I was wrong..it's Flammenspiel (that sounds a lot like zimbelstern, doesn't it?). my mother was raised speaking German at home when she was a child, but I never learned any. this one means 'flickering flames' ...that's neat. thanks for the link, but I found that site last night when I was looking for info about this one...good reference list.
Flammenspiel ! That is a great name. I want one just to say it. Der es mine Flammenspiel
oooh, pix...worth the wait. definitely.
Thanks Gram...I planted it this spring and was begining to wonder if it would bloom this year. I am told it will be 4' the first year and then increase to 6' by the 3rd year with loads of blooms. This one is about 3 ft...maybe 3 and a half so not to bad.
I have 36 bulbs of lilies to plant this fall so I better get out there and prepare the bed!!! Not to mention about 25 other plants, and yes some are daylilies. I'm an addict!
Oh BTW...I saw Custard Candy for sale for a double fan it was $5.99 and of course I thought of you! LOL
I have resisted Custard Candy so far, but I did order a few (5) others..let the addiction begin!!
of course, I've ordered other things. too. lilies & other bulbs coming in the fall, some iris, echinacea, and a clematis should be here in a day or 2, planted a couple of hosta earlier this week, still working on an order of herb plants from Mountain Valley. oh, and the aforementioned helenium that followed me home from the nursery yesterday had friends, some lamb's ear, guara, joe pye weed, hens 'n chicks, 3 half-price house plants AND an absolutely beautiful specimen Japanese pieris 'Mountain Fire' (it wasn't a great bargain - 10% off, but what the heck).
Gram ~ Hate to tell ya but you already have been bitten by "the bug"! What daylilies did you get?
Plum Perfect, Highland Cranberry, and (3) Little Heavenly Angel (I hope this is really a true pink.. still goin' for the pink/purple in the fairy garden. also hoping the Plum Perfect will be dark enough to give some contrast with Paw Print). ordered from Oakes so I would have a decent chance of getting good plants instead of looking for bargains.
I don't have any of those so you will need to post some pics next year when they bloom and let me know how they survived the winter. Thats the hardest test for my daylilies...getting through the winter. I am considered a z5 but who ever made that zone map didn't account for people in a valley and near a lake. We are more a z4 and if I buy as a zone 4 my plants usually survive. If I buy as a z5, I get a 50/50 chance of survival. It really depends how bad I want that plant, some I have wasted my money on twice, but never 3 times. You don't have to hit me in the head with the shovel!
BTW.. that Mountain Fire is gorgeous!
I know what you mean. I usually try to plant only things that are hardy to z5, even though I'm in 6. I like that cushion. And I was really hoping to never have to hit you in the head with a shovel ;-). Can't believe I found 3 that you don't have. what's the odds?
edit to add: checked and these are all rated hardy to z3

Odds are good! There are so many daylilies, I will never live long enough to own even an 1/8 of whats out there! But I can dream..........
let's see,....55,921 divided by eight......
You got the idea! LOL
LOL Petunias don't grow in the cracks in my driveway - you lucky duck.
Andy, I have a particular fondness for petunias. We were always given a petunia to take home on 'children's day' at church when we were kids. And they looked pretty much like the one in your driveway. I'm sure someone at the church grew them from seed and donated them. still love the smell I get on my hands when I'm pinching them.
aly, I wonder if your Sarah Joy explains why my Strawberry Candy is so orange. I heard from other DGer's that theirs have gotten pinker in time, buy mine pratically glows orange from across the yard.
gram
I know I'm lagging way behind, but Al that shot of your garden is great!
We need to tie a rope around you Dave...
alyrics ~ The second picture of Sarah Joy is more true to form. It is listed as a double and has always presented itself as a double in my garden. There are no photo's of it in the plant file, you could post a picture for other DG's.
Dave, unlike the rest of us, must have a LIFE ;-)
Gram ~ Pink or Orange...it's beautiful.
pixie, I think they're pretty, too (in fact, I'm thrilled with it). just wondering if aly's observations on environment kind of explain it.
you say your brother has the green thumb? seems to me there's nothing you can't grow. you've shown us enough fruit this summer to supply a small army ;-) what kind of watermelon? the round seedless ones? that's a beaut!
I like the light one on the bottom. looks like it's carved out of ivory chocolate.
Most are "Crimson Sweet" a few "Sugar Babies" a few muskmelons and some cantalope.
I noticed my "Butternut" squash is growing great too, have to save at least one or two for Thanksgiving. Had fresh string beans on Tues., Cauliflower on Wed. and Swiss Chard last night. Should be eating corn next week, I planted 3 different kinds so that they are ripe within a 10 days of each other.
I was hanging out on the Veggie forum to learn a few things- 'cause I'm thinking of giving corn a shot next year. I have to pay attention at how much sun the spot in question gets
