Plant Swap Sept 23rd, Newcastle, WA

LOL!! Does the compost go with the peanut butter?

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

yummy...

Renton, WA(Zone 8a)

Sofer, feel free to drop off plants this week. I'll be at the fair tuesday night, but the plants will be safe. My neighbors are very good about watching my yard.

Sumner, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi. I might be able to make this on Saturday morning! :-)

I have to trade:

- Seeds:
Cosmos - mixture of 'Candy Stripe', 'Daydream', and 'Gazebo' varieties
Cosmos - 'Double-Click' variety
Sweet Peas - Lathyrus Odoratus 'Cupani'
...others TBD...gotta look through my stash!

- Plants:
We'll see what looks good for transplanting and sharing later this week.
I'll surprise you. ;-)

- Veggies
Have some pumpkin-size zucchini (really!) that I'd love to share. I thought they were supposed to be about hand-size round zuc's, but they are more like small-med pumpkins in size. Nice light zuc flavor; great for bread.
Also may have a variety of tomatoes and a few green peppers to bring along.

- Garden décor
Ceramic statues (gnomes, etc.) and stakes. Wood garden signs. If you want to pick out items ahead of time for trading, click on my username then scroll down and follow the link to my homepage "garden whimsy". I'll remove items for the trade from the site.

What I would love:
- Purple hydrangeas
- etc.

Tiffanya, you can count on some hydrangeas from me. Rooted cuttings, but they should bloom next year.

trying to pull up your site, but the link doesn't work. typed in gardenwhimsey.com but nothing comes up on the page. server problems?

Try this one for garden signs + statues:
http://gardenwhimsy.etsy.com

And this one for garden stakes:
http://www.bluekidney.com
I have many stakes available -- dog, cat, bird, moose, whale, etc. etc. etc. -- just let me know your preference and I'll see if I have them in stock.

I have a lot left in stock and am refocusing out of craft shows; I'm happy to exchange items for plants, etc. :-)

Tiffany,

I have a couple of small lavander 'louden blue' starts, silver king artemesia, and nice big divisions of yarrow 'moonshine', autumn joy sedum, shasta daisy, and sunburst coreopsis. Also a chartrese grass that doesn't mind shade. If you are interested, let me know and I'll put some aside for you.

-- jacqueline

Sumner, WA(Zone 8a)

Jacqueline,

Some 'louden blue' and a division of the 'moonshine' would be great!

-Tif :-)

You got it. You have some lovely plantfiles pictures! If you have seeds, cuttings or divisions of any below, keep me in mind.

Delphinium 'Volkerfreiden' or 'Delft Blue'
Penstemon

rose 'sun downer'

See you this weekend. It is going to be so much fun!

Sumner, WA(Zone 8a)

I may have some 'Volkerfreiden' and/or 'Delft Blue' seeds available; will bring them along if I do. Will double-check the yard for 'Delft Blue' extras -- may have a few younger ones around.

I also have Foxglove seeds - 'Pam's Choice', 'Foxy', and 'Shirley'.

I have an extra 'Super Purple Aster' that I've been wondering what to do with...let me know if you'd like it. (See photo.)

And I have a few extra Cerinthes grown from seed -- see image at:
...lol. oops that's purpurasens.

I suppose I should go outside and take stock, then update my "to trade" list, eh!? ;-)

I feel left out because no one wants my Yarrow. I live where they often hybridize and I am bringing one that has developed from crosses from natives to other hybrids. You guys should get in line. Also I have a ton of seeds from my Columbine crosses and nobody wants those. I guess I'll just go home and cry.

Sumner, WA(Zone 8a)

Sofer, got pics...?

Yarrow -- any pink?
Columbine -- do you have any 'Dorothy Rose' or 'Songbird Cardinal' in that collection?

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I am bringing them so everyone doesn't leave before I get there. "The news to follow"

I'm interested in your cerinthes, Tiffany. I've got the hydrangeas, and bunches of other things. I have double daisies, too, that aren't on my list.
Don't cry, sofer. It's just that the yarrow drowns in my garden.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I never grew them here. I didn't know the plight of them here. They are spectacular in Montucky.

Renton, WA(Zone 8a)

I'd love some columbine seeds Sofer. There will be a table setup with seeds from everyone's garden with envelopes, so people can take some of each home.
Yarrow does fine in my yard, I already have white, red, and yellow. So, I'm good. :)

Tiffiny, update your list and I'll take a look. Those malva are beautiful, I'd definitely like one of those!

-- jacqueline

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

OK I will have some columbine seeds and unknown color Achilla. I have some flowering still to show the colors. several pinks and some yellows and oranges.

Okay, I have everything ready...just not in the car yet. :-D

Pixy, I have a really big cerinthe for you! They look a little droopier in the pots than in the ground, but should come back okay if the weather stays like this.

Jacqueline, I have malva and penstemon. No extra delphs right now; will follow-up w/you on them next season.

I will be bringing seeds, plants, a few veggies, and garden décor.

....11am...how long does it extend to? Do I need to get there by/before noon?

I am hard at work and plan on getting there around 1Pm barring any emergencies. Nice Day!

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

Wish I could come.. but dangit,,, got other things I have to do today... have a great day everyone.!!!

Sumner, WA(Zone 8a)

This was fun! Thanks so much for hosting, Jacqueline!

-Tif :-)

Renton, WA(Zone 8a)

We had a great day. About 30+ people came and filled my large yard with plants, food, and friendship. I'll bet there were at least 500 different types of plants available today. I have way too many left, both that I traded for and that were remaining in the free pile! :) I'm not complaining though, just wondering if I can get my husband to make any more beds this fall....

Thanks to everyone who came and shared their extras with those who didn't have anything to share. We had lots of first timers, but somehow everyone I met went home with more than they came with. Isn't that impossible? Must be a fishes and loaves thing. The plants multiplied during the trade!

If you didn't make it, I'd recommend the green elephant on the first saturday of november. It is held at Holy Cross Church in Redmond. See you there!

It was a great event! How much more fun can a gardener have without getting dirty, than to gather with like-minded people and talk/trade plants! I knew I shouldn't have said I was going to come home with fewer plants than I arrived with. It is definitely a 'loaves and fishes' kind of thing. Here's a photo of the back of my car when I got home. It was extraordinarily satisfying! Thank you, Jacqueline, for hosting this cool event!
I got to meet Soferdig in person (yes, he is a real person!), and also Katye, whom I had not met yet. I wish Soferdig could have stayed longer. While he was at the swap there was so much action going on that we didn't have the opportunity to sit and chat. But maybe next time around! I know he went home with a car full of cool plants, and I took some lovely bergenia off of his hands, as well as a great color of yarrow. That one is already in the ground!

It was an unusually satisfying day!

What a nice day, with wonderful weather, too.
I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet & talk with some of you - it was very relaxing to be with others who understand why plants need to be moved, (not once, but multiple times...) and the like.
I am happy to say that I was able to connect with Sofer in Bellevue, so the iris are on their way to Kalispell.
What was with the traffic southbound 405 today? It was still tied up when I left about 3.
Any other swaps in the near future, or are most of you done with dividing? I haven't started yet...How about next Spring? it may take me that long: someone stole my sun.

Oh, I was wondering where all the sun was coming from ! Sorry it was from you! I've been sacrificing virtual virgins at an astounding rate to get this weather.
I'll be up for trading any time in the next couple of months. I didn't have nearly the plants available today that I will in another month, considering I'm digging out at least two entire beds and likely will not have the energy to replant everything.

Glad you could connect with Sofer!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Thank You thank you thank you jburesh! I am sorry I had to leave so soon but had a call to get back to at work. Thank you pixiydish for all of your plants and warm conversation. But Kayte you win the award of the most friendly person who drove all the way to the office I was working in to bring me those spectacular Iris'. I so appreciate your sacrifice. I hope you got to go to Wells Medina for an hour. It was good to meet you all and I'm sorry for the lack of conversation. I was consumed with plants and then got an emergency from the office. Hey I'm back in the country of zone 8 in November I'll have to focus on the Redmond thing. Thanks Pixy, Patrick, Jburesh, and Kayte. Next time. Steve.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Pixy - keep sacrificing - we need to detain the sun locally. Nice collection in the back of your car! Are they all in their little beds now? :O)
I work 8-5, so the time I have to dedicate to the garden is diminishing at a drastic rate. But I think I would have much more in the way of sizable offerings in another month or so. What do you think? Anybody? I would be happy to make a list & post what I will have. Well, barring unforeseen circumstances, as Murphy's Law seems to be in play. My tree guys never showed yesterday - they'll probably arrive bright & early next Saturday - while my relatives are here! All I can do is laugh - a little levity usually puts things into perspective.
Sofer had mentioned previously that he'll be back later in the fall. Maybe he'll want to make another haul - but at that point he'll probably be planting into the snow!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I won't be planting in the ground. though it doesn't freeze intil late December. I just winter over my aquitions in my compost pile. Seems to work well and stimulates great root development.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Sofer - if you make it out this way late fall, will you be wanting to take back more plants?
Let us know - I think there are probably several of us who will be dividing over the next few weeks. Pixy has the sacrificing thing down pat, so I believe she can keep the sun around for a while, which will enable us to get most, but not all of our autumn work completed. LOL like that's going to ever happen...
And btw, it was no problem to get the Iris to you. I just kept thinking about your DW: since she was looking forward to getting something special, happy to oblige. No Wells Medina yesterday - I decided that I will go later in the week after I prepare some spots in the orchard. Besides, it hasn't quite sunk in that I have less sunlit hours in the late afternoon/evening. Time is fleeting........

Oh yes, Steve! You'll have to let us know if you are still lacking in the plant department! LOL! As you well know, gardening is a year 'round contact sport here.

Katye, of COURSE all of the plants are snug in their little beds --- in the considerable 'pot ghetto'! LOL

You and I could certainly do some trading later on. I'll still be digging for the next 2 months.
Now regarding the hideous 8-5 routine during this time of year, have you not discovered headlamps?? Gardeners up here need to invest in lighting equipment. I have several types, but the favorite is a combination of high intensity halogens and a halogen light in the center of my forehead. (I just press a button and it comes right out of my skull...)
Days like this a simply made for being in the garden.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

Keep me in mind for swapping the next few months, got my getto going on the patio right now... will be going into the plant room soon... and will be digging some up to move too.

Thumbnail by Vizz8
Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Pot ghetto, lol! I have a permanent city...
Headlamps - no. Halogen lights on stand - yes!
Skull-mounted halogens that come out when you push a button - ow!
But, I'd really like one, or several...
Soooooooooo, I am sorry to say that the heat was a bit intense today, but several trips to the wisteria for respite was okay by me.
Yes, I'll be dividing - I just took a long hard look at my daylilies - can I let it go one more year? Perpective is necessary: better daylilies than the 6' tall Miscanthus!

Viv, I will definitely keep you in mind. Looking for anything special?
Katye, are you complaining about the weather???? Many virtual virgins gave their lives for this weather. No complaints! Just enjoy the blue, blue sky!

cool aside: we got to see the great horned owl flying last night. We hear him all the time, but this was the first time we've actually seen him. He flew from tree to tree, landing in one of our doug fir trees. It was the coolest! I love owls!

Renton, WA(Zone 8a)

Here are some pictures from Saturday. Hope to see you at the Green Elephant the first saturday of november. Not that I have any more room for plants! well, ok, technically I just need to dig up more lawn. :)

here is a pic

Thumbnail by jburesh

Not seeing those pics, Jacqueline.
BTW, the joe pye weed we got from Jim cannot possibly be maculatum. That one is the one I have and it gets huge. He said this was a different variety. I'm wondering if it can be Eupatorium perfoliatum?
Here's a link to photos:
http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&aq=eupatorium%20perfoliatum&ie=UTF-8&rls=HPID,HPID:2005-21,HPID:en&q=eupatorium+perfoliatum&sa=N&tab=wi

I haven't really compared the leaves yet myself, but see what you think.
If you can email him on gardenweb, maybe you could ask him what color the flowers are and how tall it gets?

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

It will be too late for me to plant in Nov but I am looking for a couple of trees at Wells medina so I don't need any more plants. I am always looking for Cimicifuga any. Interesting hostas. I have many things but will divide in spring cause the winter is too tough for fall. We will get together when I come over in the spring. Again all of you thank you. Oh I have spent the last 2 days with Valley Viburnum while they John and Maryanne have visited the park. Why don't you guys think about it. Steve.

trying again>>
