Coffee and ... for Wednesday, August 16

Thanks all for the advise on the math problem. I had finally figured it out. I did it the same way Meezer did, and yes, I got 9 also. I had to send DS out of the room so I could concentrate and really think about it and diagram it all out. Once I got it, I had him come back in and explained to him how to do it step by step as he drew the diagram himself. Then when he was done I asked if he understood it and knew how he got that answer, I got a blank stare and he said "I have no idea." It's a really good thing I never finished my teaching degree!!

Evening all,

I'm feeling slightly more alive tonight, so hope this virus will pass more quickly than they usually do. As far as I can tell, my immune system is in pretty good shape, but I am susceptible to upper respiratory problems --- think it may be in my genes, but smoking for 31 years or so didn't help one little bit!

dmcd, that was a great thing to do to memorialize Lydia. I'm so glad that you were able to take in two homeless cats and they look like really neat ones at that.

darius, sorry about the extra problems in the barn and especially about your tooth. Have you been in touch with the dentist's office lately? It sounds as though you really need to get in and have that taken care off ASAP.

I've bought lard too. I used to use it for pie crust, but haven't for some time now. I do use it in the peanut butter mixture that I make for the birds and can usually find it not far from the butter in the refrigerated case at the grocery store; however, in one of the big grocery chains, you have to actually track down an employee and they get it for you --- it's not displayed in the store at all. DH has requested pasties for his birthday party and wants the lard pastry dough. That's okay except that if the vegetarian part of my family plans to attend, I'll have to make two kinds of pastry as well as two kinds of fillings.

critter, glad to know that someone else appreciates Tom Leher. What about the "Vatican Rag"?

Maria, nice bouquet. So nice that you have such thoughtful neighbors. Roses are nice, but I've never even considered trying to grow any (except, perhaps, for the wild roses). I simply don't have the time to bother with "fussy" flowers.

Bonnie, I hope you're not having another bout of the phone line blues! If you can check the forum, I'm ~~~~~~~~~ to you.

Afraid that I'm quickly running out of steam, so must say hello, goodbye, and goodnight to everyone else. Sweet dreams to you all.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

you have a humerous child, Flowerchild, lol

Sheila, I do not like Crisco either but try half crisco and half butter, have used lard way back, it was my MIL recipe and very good too. I feel dopey too in the morning if I take SP too late because I do not sleep longer no matter when I take them, I still wake up early.

Sarv,I think I am going to get some disk computer games too, they be good to relax with, you see I can't read books anymore, eyes are too bad now, even have to stop using the computeer just to rest them.

Have not been out of the house since Sunday so I decided to go to the mall and se what is new in clothes, last time I bought summer things was in April. Actually I don't need anything but it was fun to just look around.

I bid you good night , hope you all sleep well

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

good night from me too, I'm yawning, no nap, hope to slip quietly into dreamland tonight with no wake ups....

And yes, we are demolishing the cat tree, shred by shred.

Night Gracie...are your stitches out yet?

Sarv, I am not in the classroom anymore. I am an office administrative specialists. I handle all the overflow from the dean, councelor and principal. Everything from disipline to paperwork. As far as I know no public school can require that a parent provide any supplies that the teacher may need for assignments or daily tasks. They can send out a suggestion list/want list but if the parent does not provide it the school/teacher must to allow the student the same learning opportunity as the others by supplying the items. That is another paragraph in the No child left behind law act.
How large is this house that they are clearing out. I cant imagine what could possibly be left in that home. So sorry that they are unable to celebrate their wedding anniversary the way they want. At least they are spending it together.

McCool, maybe you need to start taking a daily vitamin and a dose of that OTC Airborne. I wonder also if you are just not getting enough time for your immune system to recover before the next bug comes a visiting. I do hope that you are feeling well soon.

Twyla, the above goes to you also. I saw that the heat has backed off somewhat so hopefully that will help. You are in my daily thoughts..

To all that commented on my wonderful boss, Yes, I know..... She is one of a kind. I think the spirits knew I wasn't about to deal with the type of person my last boss was again and gave me this one. I kidded her about getting her statements in writing while the getting was good yesterday.. She laughed and this morning she had a glowing recommendation all typed and signed for me.

DMC, I am glad that you are doing a bit better. What a great way to memorialize Lydia by adopting another cat and her kitten and allowing one more empty cage to be filled for another rescue. They both have beautiful markings.
I agree with your line of thinking about friends. This is why moving and being closer to my best friend played a part in our moving decisions. I just can't imagine growing old and experiencing the rest of our lives over the phone. I have been truly bless with a few good friends. These women are ones that I know if I called at 3 am they wouldn't complain about the time. I am sure they all know that I feel the same way because a couple do call in the wee hours when they just cant wait to share info.

Meezer, I have a picture around here somewhere with the family St Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage hanging like threads from the kitchen ceiling. Wasn't me though. My mother forgot to turn down the heat and went out to do some gardening. When she heard my father, brothers and I laughing histerically she ran inside to find my dad taking pictures for proof.

Maria, beautiful roses from a great friend for a wonderful person. It is things like this that make me smile and realize that not everyone has forgot what is important.....

Vann, please be careful and I hope that you enjoy yourself everyday. Check in when you can. I will miss hearing about all your going ons.....

Bal, you deserve a nap after all those chores. I would be ready for a nap after all that...

Flower, a couple years ago, my oldest son was taking a physics class. When I walked by the table he was sitting at I looked down and all I saw was letter and words. I thought he was doing English. He still wont let me live it down. Good thing I left the classroom, I am so out of practice with math.

Okay I am sure that everyone has had the chance to update and post in the time it has taken me to type this. I am going to get off here, get the plants watered, take a bath and head to bed. Spent most of the day doing the graphics for the new office stationery. The school district has decided that they want a uniformed logo platform for all publications leaving the schools. This means all new letterhead, envelopes, fax cover sheets, memo's and business cards, ETC....... Talk about a waste of money and time.
Have a great night and wave's to all ~~~~~~~~.

Hi folks. had a nice message all written and then I clicked on Sheila's cat pic above and it went poof. this time I've got two windows open as I try to reconstruct.

I got all the foam covers done and spent about an hour earlier this evening wrestling them all onto the foam. sure got some exercise doing it. Took a couple pics maybe I'll try to post tomorrow. Just got finished loading them all into my car (have to fold down the back seat) and after aquafit tomorrow, I'll drop by the church and put them back in the bell closet.

Also spent about 4 hours at the Food Cupboard bringing successor up to date on monthly and 6 month stats. He sure isn't anywhere near the computer expert he made himself out to be.

I enjoyed the math question. I sometimes see things like that in puzzle books. By the time I got here you had all solved it; so I'll take your word for it, but I would have gone about it in a similar manner. Always enjoyed math and at one point intended to become a math teacher. But made a switch into music after one year of university.

Sheila, I pack like your DIL with lots of zip lock bags. And I also have some fabric packing bags I sewed a number of years ago - some plastic lined. But unlike your DIL, I'm a last minute packer. Will pack tomorrow for our trip and only because our flight is too early on Friday to pack on Friday. LOL

Dorothy - what a nice idea to rescue a cat and kitten. They will make a fitting memorial to Lydia BTW, there is a hosta which starts with Lydia. Forget the second word, but I think it's probably hard to find. I could find very few Internet references to it and it's not listed in either DG plant files of the Hosta Library.

earthling - loved the story of the big red tom with the kitten that showed up at your place. I can certainly buy lard very easily in Canada.

Hi McCool, glad to hear you are feeling a bit better. Ready for the big challenge of thread starting?

Hi Casey and anyone else I didn't directly address.

Have a good night. Hope many of you sleep better than last night. I'll be back in a minute to start my last thread (at least for now).

dmc I am so happy about the new kitties, I can't stand it!!! LOL

I am the treasurer of our local SPCA and I know about all the poor animals that come in and need homes. And that you took a mama is even better!! Monster looks like a sweet little thing and mama reminds me of my Bit. She never was a mama though, LOL, but I did get her at the shelter.

Here is a picture of The Bit saying welcome to mama and Monster...

Well, it is still the 16th, so will post here. Don't know where the day went, but it surely did. I spent the better part of the day, taking up the crushed brick, loading it in a wheelbarrow, and then put down the black plastic, there was so much soil that I ended up getting one of DH's minnow baskets, and sifted out the dirt, then washed the brick before putting it back down. I have about 3/4 of one side done, and will try to get back to the task tomorrow. This is a decorative area coming up our walk, and didn't put down the plastic, and grass grows up through the brick. So to keep the grass down, decided that I needed to take it up, and lay the plastic and put the brick back on over the plastic. Wish that I had done it right to begin with, then this wouldn't be necessary.

Put in 5 new daylilies, that I had purchased from a friend/neighbor, and got that bed weeded. I have gone from about 4 daylilies to 57 this year.

Got in the pool about 12:00, and since the temps were in the mid 80's and a breeze blowing, didn't stay there long.

Had a good chat with I01 this afternoon, fixed supper, have some sweet potatoes, just dug, and boy were they good. Then to Bible study, and home to work on the brick again.

dmc, so glad that you jumped right in, and replaced Lydia, and what a cutie the kitten, and a regal looking mom.

Sarv, sorry I didn't see your invitation sooner to go shopping, I would probably have taken you up on it, as I need some things to take to Reno with me next week. On DS dumping cat, I would have a fit. It just makes me so sad to know that "indoor cats" are expected to fend for themselves after a life indoors. I even bought cat food to take to a neighbors barn to feed the little kittens there. I can't stand to see any animal hungry or in distress.

Maria, what a pretty bouquet the roses were. I sure hope that they last several days, I love them, can't grow them. I try to keep fresh flowers in the house at all times. I cut the glads and dahlias and bring them in. It just perks up the house.

McCool, hope that the latest in "bugs" doesn't decide to stay too long. It seems that several people have the upper respitory infections from allergies this time of year. I take Vit. C on a daily basis, and the Airborn during the winter. Seems to have helped last winter.

Viann, good job on the covers for the foam. I know that it is something that many people will not notice, but you know that they are new and clean. Sounds like you and I are 2 of a kind. I do the last minute packing too. Although, since the weather will be cooler in Reno, I have washed and ironed several pairs of pants to pack for next week.

Flowerchild, glad that I don't have a school aged child here any more. I have done so many math problems in my lifetime, that I actually get brain dead when confronted with any kind of math. If I don't have my calculator, I can't add anymore.

Well, I am having a CRS attack now, and hope that nobody takes offense. Just ~~~~ to all I have not addressed.

Tomorrow is shopping/errand day, with a dentist appointment thrown in. I am getting the braces off, but replaced with a retainer. That surely will be more comfortable.

Okay, it is Good Night Gracie time. Hope all has a good night, and awakes refreshed and ready to tackle a new day.

Earthling~ Yes you can still buy lard. I couldn't have soybean oil for years. I would use lard or butter.

Maria~Beautiful roses. Found a note on my deck this am while going out for the paper. It was from a neighbor down the street that wanted to bring me roses if it woul be OK with DH. DH had given him Iris' earlier. This guy is a bit off...I think too much alcohol and maybe a little something else. He does a lot of walk by singing....LOUD...When he got here he had the roses and a nice in his hand. My DA from up the road had stopped by and picked the note up to read it. He told her it was rude to read other people's notes, did she know me? When my nephew asked who the man was that left roses for me, I told him my boyfriend....He rolled his eyes and said, "That man has issues." We decided I should keep DH.

Maria~Where did you grow up?

Went to Birch Bay today....loved this pic of the boys.

Sheila~ I learned to pack like that. I did not want people touching my undies! At Bellingham airport they take everything out right there where everyone can see. Ticked our youngest off a couple years ago..."Why did I even bother to fold my clothes?", he said.

Dorothy the kitties are wonderful medicine. Looks like we will be stuck with Dick and Jane. Once they are here I can't let them go. My daughter once adopted a kitty with her very first pay check. DH was never fond of cats....Oh how times change!..Anyway, she saw this little kitty reaching out of the cage wanting to be petted. I said, "Sis, did you look at it?"..."yes and she wants to be held"....she was half shaved, had burned whiskers and ears, most of her tail was gone and she had stitches in her tail, her back leg had been amputated there were stitches there and she had been spayed. She'd gotten caught in a car motor and they saved her. Sis had to have her...I said no! Dad will kill us if we get another cat....he's gone for the weekend......well we knew what a softy dad really was...got the cat...no discount, I asked...but it's missing a leg...she didn't like that. Oh people can up with some nifty names for a three legged cat....Jen would have none of that, especially if Kate was around. Yes she named her Kate.....Guess what Kate went and did one day???? Broke the front leg on the same side as the missing one! If you want kitty fun, there it is. I had to hold her up to go potty, someone had to sleep with her so she would stay quiet. DH even took over a night shift after Sis came into our room crying because Kate had bit her. And yes a cat can run on two legs! She got away from me in the back yard...the only thing that kept her in was she got stuck in the fence with her cast! She had a lot of large dog kennel time. She lives with my parents now that Jen lives in Vegas. Kate does exactly as she pleases, they spoil her beyond rotten! Oh ya...when DH got home the next evening he came to Sis' room....he took one look at kate and said, "What is that?" Jen said, "A Kitty, Kate, do you like her?" "Where did you get her?" "The humane society." "you paid MONEY for that?" He shook his head walked out and came back in about 5 minutes to make friends with Kate.
Have a great day everyone!

Karen, I was born, brought up and educated in Vienna, Austria. I met an Ameerican Soldier at the end of WWii

Are you tellung me the actually open the suitcases at the Bellingham Airport? I have traveled to many places but never had to open my checked in suitcase, only the carry-on

Why are you up so late? Cannot sleep?

Schroon Lake, NY(Zone 4a)

Hi-I got up at 2 am to check the new kitties, who were in bed with DD#2. So now I'm up for good.

somer-how kind to take Kate and give her such good care. I wish i could take all the unwanted ones...but I had to adopt someone (s) who could fit in with the menagerie and stay indoors for now. We are now up to 2 dogs and 4 cats and 4 horses. If we move up to the farm I could have more animals, but i would never want to take any I wouldn't have time to spend with or that would feel out of place. Also, up there there will be a coyote danger, so you still wouldn't want kitties wandering at night.

Nice picture of the boys too! Looks like a beautiful spot.

m5-So you have a kittytree lumberjack there!

Bonnie-you and Ann are two of a kind. I wish I could acquire a little of whatever it is that keeps you going. I have so many projects, and no inclination whatsoever to start them! Every once in awhile i get going, then I can go for a long time. Just seem to need a new starter, or something.

Ann-Thanks I will hunt for the hosta too. I can see becoming a hosta addict after taking that photo tour. I wish there were more places where you could see pictures of groups of hosta, and get an idea of the relative sizes and colors (and maybe just copy the nice groupings while you're at it!)

Susan-Too cute picture of the Bit. Thanks! I just went to a big fund raiser for the SPCA here. I wish I could do more. It is too far to drive everyday to walk animals or help out that way, plus I'm still doing allergy shots (Some people might think it irresponsible to have all these critters I'm allergic to, but I figured i'll beat it!!!) I do support them financially. It is a tough time of year here with everyone dumping kittens. MAybe at some point I can serve on the board or do some other office type work to support them. I also feel free to share my opinion with people who always seem to have "free kittens..."

Off to the coffee pot, be back shortly
