Hi Dave,
I think that it might be a good idea if you could move Go Vols post of trade tips to the seed exchange, and place a duplicate in the plant exchange too. This way it can be where the traders need it most.
Thanks
P
Can you move Go Vols "best tips for trading" post?
Good suggestion - vols, say the word and I'll move this over to the Seed Trading forum.
Dave
Works for me.....would it be best if I posted a separate thread on the Plant Exchange and link it to the one on the Seed Exchange, or just have this thread posted in both places?
Dave, is there anyway that you could maybe put a link on the top of each page to this? If it's just a thread, it will get pushed down fast this fall. Just a thought
Tig, this thread is just a request for ideas. I volunteered to take all the ideas and put them into some semblance of a guide or primer. The finished product will have links from several areas of the site, right Dave?
Great, I love all the things in that thread!!
That's right, vols. I think Poojer was wanting to give this thread more exposure, so that even more tips and ideas may be contributed. Maybe not?
Anyway, are you happy so far with the response you are getting? Does it need to be seen by a broader audience in order to gain more content? Let me know.
Dave
Well, I'm not exactly a poster child for patience, so yes I'd like to see more responses ;0)
More exposure is better, so anywhere we can put this where more DG members will see it would be great! Since we'll soon be in prime trading time, I'd like to have the final document ready to roll out by late August/mid September.
As an aside, I also realize that DG members are busy with their gardens and other summer activities; given that it's only been up for a few days, I think the response has been good, and I really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to give their thoughts and tips. Thanks all!
Hi Dave,
Yes. The thread will get more exposure and some more great suggestions. But most importantly it will give the new traders a great start right now. It's better to get new folks started off in the right direction immediately rather than waiting a bit to get the FAQs together.
Poojer
Good point Poojer. Thanks for your help and thoughts on this!
GV....anything that helps new gardeners get off on the right start is important. Thanks for starting the thread.
I'm wondering if the thread suggestions could be divided into two entirely different venues.
One would be the physical processes in trading....harvesting/digging up, packing and mailing to survive the post office and mother nature, postal rates, tranplanting (if plants) or storing (if seeds).
The other venue would be the various etiquettes involved with arranging trades and following through, and advice about keeping track and what to do when things go wrong.
Poojer
Good idea! I guess I had planned to limit this more to the discussion of what to do assuming the plants and seeds are ready to send, and the techniques required to help them arrive in the best possible shape. We have seed saving and propagation forums that are meant to answer some of these questions.
Dave, maybe part of what I put together should include a link to those forums if folks have questions on how to save their seed, or divide their plants?
Poojer, can I include you on the distribution list for the draft version of this primer? I think you'd have a lot of good ideas on coaching gardening newbies, so if you have the time to spare, I'd really appreciate your perspective.
GV, check out the help/faq on sending seeds that poppeysue made last year, maybe you can incorporate that. :)
Jody, thanks for the reminder....Dave had mentioned it to me early on and it almost slipped my mind. Thanks to your nudge, consider it duly noted. I'll incorporate anything that I possibly can. Thanks, friend!
Terry/Go_Vols
Poojer I also would like to see a section on proper preparation of seeds. I have only traded/given away locally so it is usually dig and give or harvest seeds, put in envelope and hand to recipient. For example I have seen several references to drying seeds which is something I have never done.
Thanks in advance to go_vols (as long as they never beat Northwestern) for his/her efforts on this.
Grazdpa Jack
You're welcome in advance, Grazdpa_Jack! I'm a "her", by the way, although I suppose it is hard to tell from my nickname or my name (Terry). For the record, I am a Vols fan, but not as diehard as my DH. I'm sure he could tell us if Northwestern is on Tennessee's schedule anytime in the next ten years, as he loves his alma mater and has probably forgotten more about them then I will ever know!
But back to the subject at hand - seed harvest and storage. There is a seed saving forum, and it has lots of good information on how to properly harvest and treat seed to ensure it's viable for next year. If you have questions, post them there, and you're sure to get some great advice! And yes, I'm going to try to somehow incorporate that forum and the propagation one into this primer, as these are obviously critical to the success of trading seeds or plants!
Good to meet you, by the way!!!!
Terry/Go_Vols
Go vols
I don't think they are likely to meet unless Northwestern and Tennessee are ranked no. 1 and 2 in the nation. Which may be when that warm place down below freezes over. The pleasure as they say is mutual. I hope I can eventually contribute as much to DG as I have been getting.
Jack
So, what's the final resolution on this? Shall I link over to this thread so that more folks can see it and contribute ideas and suggestions?
I mean not this thread, but the other one that vols started (http://davesgarden.com/showthread/62478.html )
Dave
Yes, please!
Done! Go check it out - the link is up on the top of the page on the seed trading and plant trading forums.
The link will stay there until you tell me you've had enough.
Dave
Thanks, Dave. I'll cry "uncle" when the time comes.
Hi GV,
I'd love to help out with the drafts.
Trudi
