Lets liven things up a bit, shall we. PART II

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

The first thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/639227/ was getting a bit long with all those photos - those on dial up may not want to wait that long.
here's part II

Last one from me for a bit, I really need to quit slacking and do some work. Keep your photos coming!!

Happy Monday all!

Wonderful photos all....fabulous collection!

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Sorry to see that you can't clone Fiji with a leaf start - I guess the old timers were right. I think I have a leaf in the tank that rooted but I haven't looked for it in weeks. I'm sure I will get the same results you did.

Begonia Don Miller.

Very nice 'Don Miller', Jackie.

Here is 'Sinbad', 'Thurstonii', 'Lucerna', and some colocasias for background.

What a lovely mix of plants, hc. With the horrible heat wave many of us have been through, I was ready for fall. Seeing your group of beauties, and the others that have been posted, I want spring again.

Hey patootie, nice Don Miller!!! I gave up on most of my mallet types as they are powdery mildew magnets for me. Yours is a beauty!!

As are yours Butch!! Keep the photos coming!

Happy Tuesday all!

Wow wow hc.. those are nice

Two rexes in the house. The one on the left is labeled as Lalomie (but I doubt it), the other is unkown (on the right).

Thanx Butch and Lali. I only have a few that are nice enough to photo.
Both of you have lovely, extensive begonia collections. I haven't had the
time or energy necessary to keep them repotted and fed. The weather will
have to start cooling off soon and I hope to do more.
I hope everyone will continue to share their pics.

Begonia Phantom, my favorite.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Great photos! I will try to take some later on but I am not as good as you guys are on names. I am such a haphazard gardener!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Another shot of Phantom. It had never been pruned so by this
spring it was ugly. I cut back about 1/2 of the stalks but should have
just cut it all the way back. I was afraid if I cut it too far back,
I would lose it and I no longer
have a source for this one.
It has a lovely pattern in the lvs but I could not capture it.
I wonder if this Leathermania hybrid, sport, or seedling?
has rhizomatous in it's parentage.

Jackie, here's what I found in the data base

Source Reg # Name Seed Parent Pollen Parent Type Hybridizer Location Date
KF N/A Phantom Royal Lustre seedling N/A rhiz Frieling OH 1991

I also see this one
ABS #272 Phantom grex pseudolubbersii leathermaniae cane Lee, P CA 1970

not sure if it applies or not.

regardless it's a keeper. Love it!

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

Great pictures everyone. I have a question. Can anyone tell me how to tell between Frosty, Sinbad and Don Miller? They all look quite similiar.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Lali, thanx for looking this up for me. I am thinking that lubbersii has a
distinctive pattern in it's lvs, almost irridescent (sp) which is what I could
not capture in my photo.
When I purchased this about 5 yrs ago, I was told I might get the Phantom seedling which must be the Phantom royal lustre you listed above. When my
order came in the tag said simply, Phantom.
Now I need to look for a photo of the seedling.
Lali, thanx again.

Kathy, Sinbad has scarf/hair on the leaf surface, Don Miller doesn't.
It's smooth. Don't know about Frosty.

Jackie

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Kathyvm, I have both Frosty and Sinbad, and I confuse them all the time! Now I'm going to have look closer to see if I can find what the difference really is.

patootie, Don Miller looks like another one I may have to look for to add to my collection - beautiful plant!

Debbie

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanx Debbie, Don Miller hasn't been repotted in 2 to 3 yrs. Takes lots of
abuse. I forget to water it, leave it in total shade etc. I'm going to repot him
this week as I feel guilty. LOL

You all are just plain begonia crazy, 'that is a good thing' to quote a internationally famous criminal.

Thanks for all the input about the Sinbad/Frosty/Don Miller begonias.

Dale, am I correct that your begonia is a Sinbad.

rcn48 Does the Frosty have scarf/hair on the leaf surface like the Sinbad as patootie mentioned? Looks like Dales Sinbad has a little pink hue to the leaves. Does the Frosty have it too?

I think this may be the Don Miller begonia. It has no scarf/hair on the leaf surface.

This is Rudy's Hybrid that I picked up at the SF Aboretum sale a few weeks ago. It's putting out several new leaves.

This was an eBay purchase, labeled as Scrooge. The newer emerging leaves are real dark.

This is my new Plum Gorgeous, also from GHW. Should have watered after taking pictures I guess.

GHW sent me this one unlabeled. I did have a missing Black Ace on the shipping list but don't think this is it and with the long wait and trouble getting that order, i didn't even bother contacting them. I love it whatever it is!

This is a rex that I bought over a year ago, just plopped it in a large outside pot when it got ratty looking inside ( my first try with a rex) I forgot all about it as it looked like it died with the winter rains only to come back with the warmth of late spring. I have removed a couple of bug chewed leaves but other than that, it's seems happy and carefree.

Thumbnail by Calif_Sue

I added a peach fucshia, black coleus and silver dichondra to complement it's coloring.

I have a new Looking Glass in a small clay pot which I inserted into a bigger pot with a coeus and an unseen trailing gold leaf fucshia.

Found this one while shopping with Lali & Kell, marked carolinifolia but Lali says it isn't. Forgot the other name now, Lali?
Here's Monterey Bay Nursery's image of it, do they have it wrong too? http://www.montereybaynsy.com/B/begonia_carolinifolia1.jpg

Great bunch of begonias, calif_sue.

GHW usually sends freebies/bonuses which kept me coming back as a repeat buyer despite that they usually get something wrong. This year was the very worst from them.

That last picture is probably thiemei (don't you love the spelling on these things?). Carolineifolia looks very similar but the leaves are slightly different (I think thiemei has a hook on some of its leaves whereas carolineifolia is fairly uniform) and I think its rhizome is a lot larger but I will have to wait to see how my thiemei grows.

Check out these pictures.

Yup, Butch is right, that's what I think it should be Sue.

so how do we say that, 'thigh-ee-me-eye'?

I have both, so maybe if time allows, i can take a photo of them side by side.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks for sharing all of your goodies!!!
'Black Ace' isn't in the data base, but sure looks to have b. heracleifolia in it's gene pool.

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

Enjoyed all you pics Calif_Sue, especially the last one, the thiemei.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Sue, do you have a name for the b. that was planted with the black coleus and dichondra? I think the colors are so lovely. I'm enjoying all of these pictures, BTW.
