Do you smell your food before you eat it?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

In all the years I've smelled my food and drinks before consuming
them, I've found but a few people who do the same. The rest think I'm nuts.

Surely there are other sniffers out there, come forward!

When you smell your food as often and as long as I have, you
begin to know in advance what your mouth should expect. Laugh
if you will, but I often allow hubby to fix his fountain drink first, then
I smell his soda to see if I would like the same. You can tell (or smell)
if it is laden with syrup, too much carbonation, etc. Why pour an
entire soda if you aren't going to enjoy it?

(I hear someone laughing out there!)

Come on, folks. I know you're out there. Food sniffers, come on out!

Peterstown, WV(Zone 6a)

Ok, I have been know to sniff drinks! ~ just to make sure that I'm getting the one that I ordered & not my sons. He always gets a Coke & I get a D.P....

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

My husband should learn to smell his drinks! He only drinks diet drinks and absolutely hates cherry. You should see the look of disgust that comes over him when he gets a Dr Pepper, Cherry Coke or even Rootbeer or anything else unexpected. LOL

I think I smell food if someone else makes it but not my own cooking. Paranoia??

On the banks of the , VA(Zone 7a)

No, but only because if I'm home, I've cooked it, and I know it's good..or, I'm out, and it's just not something I'd do in a crowded place.

But I smell it constantly when I'm cooking. ; )

Waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

I have been known to smell first bite later. I'm one of these that if introduced to a new food If doesn't smell good its not good. Thats how I've been for 50 years, why stop now?

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

I always smell my food! If it smells bad, it for sure isn't going in my mouth. When I'm cooking, I smell the food, too - especially when checking for garlic.

I smell things before I cook them to see if they're fresh...such as meat, fish, milk. I check potatoes to see if they're earthy. Once food is cooked, I simply enjoy the aroma but don't stick my nose to it. :) I might sniff wine, but not my soft drink. Actually, I don't even drink the latter anymore.

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 9a)

I've always smelled my food. But I never really noticed it, until my oldest son came along. It was pointed out to me that he smelled everything before he would put it in his mouth, even at a young age. He is now 28, and he still does it, so does his 9 year old daughter. I guess we pass on these little idiosyncrasies to our offspring. Or, maybe its just habit, they see us do it...they do it.

Just the milk and half and half. Nothing ruins a pot of coffee like soured cream!

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Not intentionally, though it doesn't sound like a bad idea. Maybe I'd eat more slowly than.

DH likes to smell books.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL Kelli, better books than socks.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Now that you mention it, I think he smells socks sometimes, too. At least he doesn't put his dirty socks on the kitchen counter any more. I put a stop to that real quick. I swear, the man has no concept of germs.

My mother was an excellent cook but she would get into ruts some times and try recipes that would come in the Tuesday's paper to try and spice things up. It was on these occasions that our whole family would sit down to eat, say prayer and all turn to look at my older brother. He would smell the food, (always did) and if he took a bite we all felt it was safe. The real funny part is that even my mother would wait until Tim gave the go ahead after a good whiff.

He was an excellent cook and bakery himself when he grew up and everyone loved all the food that he cooked at any outing that he had attended. He claimed his skills in the kitchen were guided by the smells.

Edited because I can't spell any better then I can talk......

:)

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

I don't smell my meals, but I do smell produce. If a peach doesn't smell like a peach, then it isn't going to taste like much either!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I smell in-store and/or farmer's market tomatoes, and melons. Usually buy none from the store!

I ALWAYS ask to smell the fish, frequently don't buy it either.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Yep, I smell produce too. No rotten bag of potatoes for me!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

That made me laugh so hard about the sniff sniff sniff the food or others only for me smell the meat to make sure fresh before I cook this and not always look good color meat can be smell bad sometime so sometime kids trick on me change my drink when I see them acting not right so I has to smell it before I drink.
