Coffee and ... for Tuesday, August 8
This is about a BIL. Some years older than my spousal unit, he was very cruel to the younger kids. Later, he became involved with the KKK. They burned a cross in the yard of a poor black family that was living in the neighborhood, just trying to make a living.
He took up with drinking, too, becoming lewd, argumentative, and thought he owned the road. He raced on public roads a lot and if someone was ahead of him that was slow, he would get right on their bumper until they pulled over. He caused a few wrecks and nearly killed one woman who pulled out in front of him never dreaming he was doing 90 m.p.h.
He ruined his kids, both ended up on drugs and terrorized his wife. He came to our house one day and got into our electrical meter and slowed it down and, of course, the power company found out. Gambled wildly and had no control to actually win anything except by luck. And he made a vulgar pass at me that left me afraid to be around him at all, ever.
Now he's dead, of course. No tears shed at the funeral. However, all his siblings shared a common sad feeling of a wasted life. He was very intelligent and talented; an excellent welder who went on to sell welding supplies to industry and made good money, which we were aware of because he always kept an uncashed paycheck or two to show off. However, he got fired a lot for obnoxious behavior and drinking. He also got rolled by drinking buddies and lost thhose paychecks, too
No one misses him, though, except his 2 confused and sickly kids, who seem to have a revisionist memory of him.
wow, I really vented, didn't I?
I actually had a great weekend, which extended into Monday. Went to the music center for a concert on Friday, a quilt show on Saturday, and stayed home on Sunday and Monday and just piddled around and nursed my back after Friday and Saturday, lol.
Good monrning all,
Just stopping by quickly before breakfast and notice that if I sleep in, my fingers work better than when the alarm wakes me. They're not doing too well now.
Wood, glad you has a good weekend to mention at the end of your vent. The late BIL sounds like a real sad case.
Hope you all have a great day and I'll BBL.
Ann
Morning all - slept like crap last night- tossed and turned and walked the floor- think I got about 4 hrs in. I should have gotten up and done the dishes or cleaned! but instead just rolled around looking at the clock.
Had my morning walk already and almost got carried away by the mosquitoes - sheesh they are bad again. Noticed several clumps of J beetles - need to toss out the immunox and mix up some sevin I think.
Dsis is outta bed - reading - she does that 24/7 - eating, riding in the car etc- she always has a book/mag in her hand. We need to sit down and plan out our last day together.
wood- that BIL sounds off better in the ground than on earth. Isn't it a wonder that some people can cause such havoc. The sorriest thing is that his kids are so screwed up - the mess passes on to another generation.
Vi- luck you getting a rust bubble fixed for free. I have one on a fender, but DH doesn't seem concerned about it. Guess I won't waste time worrying about it either!
Well,, HI to all - time to get outta my chair and see about a healthy breakfast...
Morning All!
Was watching the hummers. There are 6 or 7 of them for sure. 1 male and 6 females. The battle over the feeder is really on. One flew up to another and actually dragged it off the rest. My they are fantastic to watch!
They will probably be here a few more days before they start south So you all be ready for them
Have to get going have to go to the Dentist today for a cleaning.
BBl Vicki
Hi all. Cool and nice here still. We missed the thunderstorms and hail yesterday so I got lots of mowing done.
Twyla-Thanks for the inspiration! I will print it out and put it all over my house!
darius-do get the tooth taken care of, pronto!
ws-That BIL sounds like a nightmare, wow, that's pretty extreme. Should be illegal for people like that to have kids or pets (or guns or cars for that matter)
defoecat and sarv-sounds great to have sisters like yours!
Now I CRS about yesterday's posts...and I tried so hard....well I haven't had my coffee yet so I will check back....maybe reboot the brain.
I'm nearly recovered from fair-going....we walked and walked until I thought I would drop. Saw all the exhibits, tasted much of the food, and made it home fairly early for a fair-day. I made a dutch apple pie just before we left and used the timer on the oven so I didn't know if we'd come home to pie or smoke. It worked, so now there's pie and two leftover cream puffs so help yourselves...
Not as much craft work as there was years ago, but what there was was nice. The flowers were beautiful, they had some outstanding dahlias and some interesting vegetable arrangements. Wish I had thought to take my camera.
Looks like almost everyone has a BIL or a family member who make life miserable for everyone. I have no patience to deal with drunks, and was surprised that mine didn't come equipped with his usual supply of beer last time he was here. I don't think he's reformed, I think he just didn't have enough cash...however, now that he sold that car....which, by the way, he had to return a couple thousand on to the buyer due to some undisclosed problems.
I'm a mystery fan too, just finished Case of Lies and Faithless, both excellent and well crafted mysteries. Winter time is better for reading, I am too easily distracted in summer, although the recent heat wave contributed greatly to my indoor time. I hope it's over. DH's buddy said the other day, if fall came this week he wouldn't be disappointed!
I would, I'd like to see a few blossoms on my lone moonflower vine, and harvest some of those green tomatos before it cools off.
Cece, those stone walks are attractive...at first, but eventually they sink, shift, and you can spend quite a bit of time on maintenance to keep them looking good. There are other materials that work well and can be amended, like wood chips or gravel. Since your BIL has no experience and gets all his info from tv, I think you are smart to ignore his recommendations! Funny how people with no background are so ready to tell others how to do something...(unlike those of us who know everything LOL)
I've got a golf game scheduled this morning so I better hit the shower, Maybe it will unstiffen my legs and back! What a bunch of casualties!! We need to start looking for a group home with a big yard for when we all fall apart....
Read everything last night before bed, but CRS has struck me, and I'm out of responses. Have a great day, take your meds, nurse your wounds, rest once in a while, keep your sunny side up, and I'll ttyl ~~~~~~~~
Sheila
DH says he had forgotten all about Waterscapes coming out in spring. I do believe he's leaning in my direction. The installator for Waterscape's mother owns a landscaping design company and he has put in 35 ponds in the time he has been doing it. This kid and I say kid cause he's only 24yo.. I tend to go with a professional than a know-it-all. BIL has always talked like he knew everything in the world to know and it never bothered me before cause in never affected me. This does and I got ticked. Even after I walked away he was hollerin' about what I should be doing first! Actually I do want garden paths eventually. In my time........I don't want stone either not necessarily. I'm not ready for them yet and when I am I will research and read on that too. Just don't try and make me look like an idiot in my own home.
Good Morning GOB's!
I've been up a while, read all, and really have nothing much to say. I got a surprize gift of $50 yesterday in the mail so I think I shall look for a dentist!
Meanwhile I have made a list for Brent to do when he gets here today, and things are moving along. Still hope to get started today on the storage room inside the barn but I'm doubtful. Tomorrow will be his day off because I have an appt. with my lung doctor in Tennessee, although we could work until noon. After we get all the foundation posts put in cement (there will be 10 of them), we will need to let them set at least 48 hours before we start putting on floor joists, so I hope to get them all in by Friday. BUT FIRST, we have to shore up the central bearing beam in the barn lest the whole thing falls on us.
Rats! Brent just called. His mother is off today and is taking him shopping for school clothes so he cannot work today. Shopping here requires a trip to another town so everyone tries to cram in as much as they can on that trip.
I just posted my old furnace on Freecycle... hope someone can use it.
Have a great day everyone!
Good morning, I got to sleep in a bit this morning. DH was gone when I got up, so don't know if he is in the garden harvesting, and planning my day or not. Have to do a run tothe post office, yes I went yesterday, but this idiot just mailed things and forgot to get stamps. It is overcast here, and we have had some rain, not much it looks like, so hopefully it will be a bit cooler so I can get out and do some work in relative comfort. I have read all, but no time to comment, will be back later to do that.
I have the utmost respect for all of y'all who can remember posts and comment on them. I'm lucky to remember my name some days!
M5----- That is one reason I was telling CC those stone walks will cost her a arm and a leg. If it is done right it sure will. I have helped my son put one in and he put down 3 inches of concrete as a base. let it set overnight then the next day we mixed sand and cement and poured it onto the concrete and set the stones into that something like setting tile. After the walk was done he came back a third time and made cuts accross the walk with a masons saw for expansion and contraction. That type is not going to sink.
Morning All,
Never did make it back in yesterday. Dr. Tom's receptionist Finally called back in the afternoon. A prescription was called into the pharmacy and I'll see him on Thursday. Went to pick up the prescription, Pharmacist told me Dr. wanted me to take 2 right away and after that 1, 4x per day until gone. He said if it were him, he would take the 2 right away and take 2 before bedtime. That way, they would get into my system quicker. Well, being that I'm a wuss with tooth pain, I took his advice. Woke up this a.m. and the pain isn't quite as bad. Still had to take a handful of Ibuprofen and it's dulling down some more.
Went to the grocery store after the Pharmacy, came home with Way too much stuff, took some Ibuprofen, as my mouth felt like someone was drilling into my tooth, put the cold and frozen stuff away, was going to leave the other stuff, but the Ibuprofen kicked in slightly so I put the rest of the stuff away. Bought deli chicken, Cole slaw, and potato thingies for Bill. He came home and said, "Is this dinner?" Shook my head yes, he asked what was wrong,,,,rofl,,,men have No clue. He knew my mouth was killing me. Told him that and he said, "Oh, I didn't think it was That bad". Gave him an evil look and went and laid down on the couch.
Well, just looked at the time and I better get upstairs to get ready for work or my customer will be here while I'm still in my jammie jams. Have a slowish day today and plan to keep it like that so will pop in later and comment more.
Like Darius said tho,CRS, so will have to re-read everyones posts.
Bye for now,
Kelly
Yes I think its amazing how some of you can remeber what was said by whom and comment. I read them slowly to remember and if I remember one or two I consider myself lucky. Well M5 you know how you pushed for me to learn how to get my pics on the computer and I finally did??????? i've forgotten already!! Have a pic of the little tree frog DD rescued from my lawn mowing excursion plus of a bi-color butterfly bush I never had any hope for. It not only gree from 2" to a foot and half it has its first bloom. Now I can't remember how to do it. I'm giving DS 20 more minutes then he's up. I don't care that his summer vacation is almost up. He gets up.
Actually it was twice shredded bark I was thinking of using for a garden paths some day, Not now. too much other stuff I want to get done first.
Thanks for the support!

Okay. I do believe I've got it. Lets see if this works Nope did something wrong. try again later
Good morning. Cooler today, forecast to be under 90. I woke up to wind and lay there listening to the branches of the elm tree sweeping the corner of the roof, sounding a bit like rain, but then I thought no it's not rain, I would smell rain. You know how you smell the ozone when it has been dry a long time and then it rains? Or at least we do out here. Thunderstorms forecast for tonight, but they will probably be the dry kind, lightening but no rain. We get those a lot in the summer, and that means new fires. Just when the big one near us is 95% contained but they still have 356 men working on it, plus 2 heilicopters and some bulldozers. It's almost 84 square miles and the country is steep and rugged. Some of it is a case of just keeping the perimeter cleared and/or wet to keep the fire from spreading. This gusty wind will make that difficult. I just heard one of the big planes from the forest service, probably heading to it with a load of retardant. We seldom hear planes so if we do we usually go look to see what it is, but with the wind blowing so hard this morning I couldn't locate the direction of the sound quickly enough to see the plane.
Woodspirit, when a fellow like your BIL dies, I think everybody feels a sense of relief to one degree or another. The sad part is the ruined lives along the pathway of his life.
Darius, I know you are trying to get the most done before your good helper goes back to school. At least he let you know that he couldn't be there today, and you can get a half day tomorrow before your appointment. Did the couple you hired ever come back? You said the male half was ok as I recall. How's that tooth feeling today? Ummm, nice unexpected gift.
Elaine, I hope your shoulder is feeling better. I think lots of reading is good for it.
Meezer, your day at the fair sounds like fun. Those days do tend to wear a person out, I think it's partly the walking but also the noise, people, confusion, so a person ends up with noise and motion fatigue.
Speaking of motion, I need to get into it. Laundry is first on the list, then a walk with Fritz and a ride on Patch, then going to town this afternoon. See you later. ~~~
Well, back from the post office, and did get the stamps. Probably won't have time to use them today, as DH has harvested more tomatoes for me to can. I hope this is the last I can. Some of these will be for DM. If some of you all want some, come on down, and I will even let you use my kitchen to can. Some of the tomatoes will go to DH's sister, also, then a cousin, so probably will get rid of them.
GG glad you got a prescription, and hope that by Thursday you will be able to have whatever procedure.
Cece, sounds like DH is coming around. If I were you, I would get the pond in, and scaped, then worry about the paths next. Can't do everything in one year. Gardening is a slow process, hopefully, I will have a nice garden to sit and look at when I am old(er)
M5, fair going is like pulling teeth for me. I hate it, cause all we ever do is look at the farm animals, when I am interested in so much more. Hope you take today to recover.
ves, I have hummers too, and they are a hoot to watch. fighting all of the time.
dmc, glad it is cooler, and that you can work in relative comfort today.
Sarv, was you back bothering you again and that was why you didn't sleep? So tell us what you and DS are going to be doing today.
Darius, sorry that your helper had to go school shopping, and you won't benefit from your services. Hope your trip to Tennessee is uneventful.
Viann, thanks for the facts starting each thread. Good trivia.
woodspirit, that is so bad about BIL, sounds like a complete useless jerk. I bet his life was miserable while he was here. Feel free to vent all you want, all of us need it from time to time.
Oz, you are a wellspring of knowledge. What else do you know that can benefit all us gardeners? Is you knowledge born from your mistakes, or by you successess? I get most of mine from mistakes, then the next time, I can do it right.
Well, gotta go check on the maters, hope it doesn't take too long to get this done.
BBL
Have been trying to post some pics but they won't go through so heck with try again another day.
Hello All!!
Just found you over "here." What a great thread ViolaAnn!! Course now, I'm gonna have to go and read previous days...LOL - as if keeping up with my others isn't bad enough - said in love!
Me, I'm just at work taking a break...liking the thought that we're having a break in this heat wave that only my cactus and plumies seem to enjoy!!
Thought for the day: "We are all like One-winged-angels. It is only when we help each other that we can fly." - Luciano De Crescenzo
Chantell
Ah Chantell I like that thought for today. I love angels. 5 of 13 beds have an angel some where in it.
yayyyyy it worked. Wasn't operator error it was computer err. Shutting down a bit and see whats what. bbl
Chantell, glad you could join us!
Mary, never heard a word again from the couple I hired.
This neighbor boy Brent seems good to the bone so I don't mind a missed day. It's tough to be 16, have home and garden chores, a mother with an up and down schedule and then trying to work for a neighbor as well.
He's 6' 4" tall, and just a few pounds overweight. When he came to talk to me about working, he said he used to be really fat. I asked him what changed that, and he said it started with a good whipping from his father to get him motivated off his lazy hinney, LOL. That was 2 years ago and now he has a good work ethic. He actually seems to like working although his first love is bluegrass guitar.
I suspect I shall end up being both a teacher and mentor/friend for him. He inherits a 3 acre parcel when he turns 18, and has been collecting building materials (lumber) for 2 years already. I have promised to help him with house plans (log house) and mechanicals, etc. He is so anxious to learn more than he already knows, and that's substantial country lore. So, he will also teach me!
Good job, Cece... I saw the posts on Preview.
BBL
Thank you Darius - very nice thread going on over here!!
Cece - like that tree frog!! Did good with the uploading of the pic...easy, isn't it?
darius and brent - a match made in heaven of teacher/learner! They both teach and they both learn - PERFECT!
ginni
Darius-------How did you see the posts on preveiw???? I'm so computer illterate that I had to wake D15yoS from his friends house to come home only for him to tell me the pictures were laoding I wasn't waiting long enough for it to happen. LAWSY I'm a mess with these things
Hi folks,
Went to aquafit and then three of us went bathing suit shopping and ended up having lunch at the food court in the mall. That took care of the morning. I got quite a nice suite at 50% off - black with purple trim. They had the same suit with blue but there was something about the way the bra cups were sewn in that caused a funny pucker; so I didn't buy two. There were the only two I could find in my size in that store - a branch of a large department store.
Chantell - welcome. but it's not MY thread. I'm just taking my turn starting it for the first half of August. Since we went to daily threads, we've been taking turns. I'll have to take another later on since I'm only here for a bit more than half of the month. I believe that the Coffee threads were started by julie88 whose birthday is today. Others can confirm that or correct me as they were going for close to a year before I joined them last summer. Anyway, we are delighted to have you join us.
Darius - did you call a dentist? There are several others who want to help you out with some of the expenses if you will go.
Well, off for now. Gotta figure out who the optometrist is that I've seen a couple of times. It's less than a year (I think) since I saw him, but I've got a big scratch across my left lens. When I get back from my trip, I guess I'll have to break down and get new glasses. I think the ones I have are 6 years old, but even though there was no change last year, there's no point getting $600-$700 glasses w/o getting eyes tested again. (Kills me. The supplementary medical insurance will pay maybe $250 every second year, but for those of us who keep our glasses longer than that but have to get really expensive specs, we can't claim for the years in between).
BBL.
Ann
Hi everyone! Work is getting busy again and I only expect it to get worse over the next couple of weeks. New promotion starting in mid-Sept. I hope you all know that I try to at least read your posts as much as possible and think of you guys alot. I really miss it when I can't pop in from time to time.
Had a good weekend. Started by going to Kohls Friday night and got some really good buys. To top it off, the woman in line in front of me felt bad for being a PITA and shared her 15% off coupon with me. She questioned every item that was rung up and really held up the line. I didn't mind, the only think I had to do was go home and do laundry. It was very nice of her to share though.
Saturday night went to a fair in another county. Took Sis and DBIL. Had a really good time. I love looking at all the farm animals. I would love to have a goat, but can't convince DH that the grandchildren (me) really need a goat.
Darius - How nice that you have a good worker and someone who you can share your wisdom with. He sounds like a wonderful young man. Hope you get to the dentist soon. Get that tooth looked at!
Kelly - So nice to see you back here.
Cece - What a cute little froggie! Good luck with the pond. I don't have any problem BIL's. But SIL's are another story! I only get along with 1 of the 3. MIL is no picnic either. DH's stepfather is a wonderful man and I don't know how he has put up with some of the crap over the years.
MaryE - Glad your having a cooler day. Hope those fires stay far away from you.
Back to work now. ~~~~~to everyone. Hope your having a great afternoon!
Cece, when I make a post and click on "Preview" rather than "Post" it shows a link of anything that has been posted while I was typing. You can click on the link and see the latest post before you actually send your own post.
Tried 2 dentists, waiting for a call back. Ann, I am NOT good at accepting help but I sure do appreciate the support!
I have 2 tomato plants in a front flower bed, with many, many flowers but NO fruit has set. Yesterday I saw they are infested with whiteflies so today I went to town and bought some Safer soap/insecticide.
Found a yummy recipe for zucchini canned in tomato sauce and think I will try the roasted tomato sauce for it... just as soon as I get some tomatoes! I have LOTS of zukes.
The other tomato plant in that bed has about 200 cherry tomatoes coming on. I never can remember the name of it, but Molly knows! Don't know why I have such a hard time remembering the name of that tomato. The ones in the chicken pen are setting fruit... I think 2 Brandywines, 2 German Reds and 2 unidentified. Tags are buried in mulch, LOL.
I really appreciate the young man who is working for me. If he continues to work like the last 3 days I will feel blessed.
Huskey, Darius, Huskey :^)))) If I can remember nothing else. Now which fruit trees do I have??? teeheehee
It's hot out there today. We are living on leftovers from the cooking from the weekend.
My Dsil did bring some homemade soup, we had that and leftover kabobs and I made a dessert concoction that Jeremy likes so that means it was a success. You couldn't get him to eat the angel cake before I slathered it with strawberry pie filling and sour cream. The fridge is still full so I know there are more leftovers to eat.
My neighbor gave me a watermelon, I forget what for, it was an apology for something, (no, this is the nice neighbor) These people come to visit after they've been drinking all day. Their transportation is a riding mower. I set Jeremy on them to tell them they can't drive that thing through my forest and wildflowers, please keep to the driveway. So far they accept this gentle guidance from the ds.
I can't be too cranky, they did give us a riding mower, doesn't work yet, but no doubt one day it will.
I've been trying to catch some photos of my new found hummingbirds, they are just so fast tho, I can't get close enough quick enough before they are frightened away. The like the h'bird feeder necter, but they also like the batfaced cuphea and tethonia, and a few salvias I have growing. So much for the red cypress and cardinal climbers.
Oh well, they are here and I am thoroughly enjoying their presense.
Better go check my cuttings and seedlings. No doubt they will need water. Did I tell you I turned my arbor into part potting shed/bench? I really like it lots better than the plywood and sawhorses. I gave up waiting for the vines to grow over the top giving me some shade in there. I put more lumber across the top for the shade and yet spaced to allow some rain in.
Okay, time to get something done out there. TTYL
Molly
:^))))
It was exhausting all right, I think that step-stop-step-halt-step you have to do walking in a crowd causes a lot of leg fatigue and is hard on the knees. And then there's always the group who stop in the middle of the aisle while they plan their next move so you have to stand and wait behind them.
Golf was fine this morning until I totally blew the last hole....hit a nice long straight drive and it was a disaster after that. Duffed the next shot, then hit the ball another nice long one . . . . .straight into a sand trap. Four strokes to get out and then two putts................stupid game. LOL Didn't do much to unstiffen me either. Glad it wasn't league play!
Things are looking up for our ailing and aching, and cooling off some for those of us who have reached medium rare. I need to go out a do a garden inspection, put down some slug bait before they figure out there are tomatos growing in the middle of the snapdragons and drizzle a little water on the potted and hanging plants. Beautiful day!
Sheila
Been a talkative afternoon here. Just to report in, canned 20 quarts of tomato juice this morning/early afternoon. Have a gazillion of them, so maybe tomorrow,I will make some roasted tomato sauce for the winter. Have some fresh green beans on cooking, and a roast in the oven, so supper will be a little later today.
After canning the juice, I went out and planted the 14 iris that I got in a coop. I worked the bed last night, and then planted and watered them in today. The pictures of them are just so gorgeous, hope that I don't have to wait 2 years for them to bloom. I am gradually changing my planting to perennials, and will throw in some annuals just for some color between seasons, a lot easier to take care of.
Today has been overcast, and a little cooler, but the humidity is still high. Okay, complain about 1 little part of it, with the other 2 good things.
Well gonna check on the food, be back later.
Welcome, Chantell, this is an ongoing daily thing, so feel free to drop in a get to know us.
suszieq I know about DSIL's too I have four brothers all married and I like one. Theothes are %$^&%$#%$^&* I'd love for all of them to just leave
Chantell they are really nice here. I just started about a couple of months ago and feel as though I've made some friends. Its great here. Just jump in; took me awhile to do that, though. Lurked for the fist few weeks.
Hi y'all
In for my afternoon coffee break. Help yourself ... it's on the counter. Sorry, I sent the cinnamon rolls to work with the DH. They weren't very good ... just some I picked up from the grocery bakery. Had a sweet tooth the other night, so now I've cured it and now they're no longer a temptation.
Molly, the potting bench sounds really nice. The DH took a couple saw horses and laid an old piece of counter top across them. Makes a real nice potting area. There's a little hole cut out to rest my nozzle ... and I have a big trash can with potting soil right next to it. Not perfect ... but sure not bad! Underneath I have one of those plastic containers with all my gardening tools, like hand rake, spade, clippers, rooting hormone, zip lock baggies for little green houses and my gardening gloves. Everything is right there and handy and doesn't get wet. :-)
Oh my goodness ... the DH just called and said he had a delightful lunch today. I said yeah I know. I packed it. He kept naming everything. He said he had yummy roast beef, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo for his sandwich ... but I had forgotten to pack the bread. Yikes! Oh well, there were cucumbers and red seedless grapes in there also. He didn't starve! LOL
Well, I've read everything but will just wave for now. Got to get tonight's chicken on. He has a meeting tonight so supper will be late. :-(
~~~~
LOL Elaine about packing your hubby's lunch. They expect so much don't they :^))))
Now your potting bench sounds wonderfully handy. Everything right where you need it.
