Coffee and ... for Sunday, August 6 - We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/635647/

On August 6, 1890, baseball great Cy Young pitched his first professional game, leading the Cleveland Spiders past the Chicago White Sox. Over the course of his 22-year career, Young won at least 509 games and averaged more than 23 victories a season. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.
Lucille Ball was born in 1911 and Andy Warhol arrived in 1928.

Hope you're all having a great weekend. Grab a cup of coffee or a lemonade and tell us what's happening where you are.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Morning everyone - took that egg carton thing off my bed and feel 95% better (back still sore but I can tolerate it...)

Drove 1 1/2 hr up to the pig roast/wedding reception - had a good time. Didn't know many people, but stayed 5 hrs. A goodly amount of beer was consumed (I only had one as I was the driver) Left just as it was getting dark and got hopelessly lost. This place was WAY out in the boondocks.....twisty turney roads. I drove for miles on desolate roads until I hit a small town and could get my bearings. Funny thing is, it didn't take us any longer to get home than to get there!!

I have a zillion things to get done today - need groceries- we don't have zip in the house to eat (I've even gotten into the baking chips!!) laundry is piling up, dishes are in the sink and patios need sweeping off - and that is just the beginning!! My Dsis will be here this afternoon, so groceries are the first priority!!

Darius - get to the dentist - teeth, feet and backs - when they hurt you are in misery...no matter what you do. Glad the land got all tilled up- ready for your planting...Some year, before I croak, I need to plant zucchini...never had any.

Vi- glad the concert went well for you last night..now you can put your feet up and take a well deserved rest.

~~ to everyone else- CRS has suddenly overcome me- I need a garden walk...

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Good morning Sarv and everyone, beautiful day right now only 57'

Sarve, here is one of my zucchini I missed it is a foot long ,what do you suppose I should do with it? Make a zucchini bread?

Maria, cut that zucchini in half, scoop out the center. Make a stuffing and bake it.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

good idea Darius, have done that before but they were not that huge

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Wow, Maria! Look at those tomatoes. It will be awhile before mine are ripe - though I DID find 4 ripe cherry tomatoes yesterday. But the bigger ones are not showing any color yet.

Re the Zucchini - how about zucchini chocolate cake? I find that generally when they get that big (and I found a similar one last week) that the centers are full of big seeds and best not used; so you might not have too much.

Darius - get thee to a dentist. I hope you can get some pain relief soon.

Sarv - glad you enjoyed the wedding and found your way home safely. Enjoy the visit from Dsis. Did you try that bed topper for more than one night? Did you have a good mattress pad on top of it? I find, as I get older, that some cushioning on top of the mattress is realy helpful in preventing sore backs because it allows the hips to sink in a bit. Am quite a bit more comfortable on the new mattress than I was on our older, firm one although the new one is also plenty firm. We have a foam topper for the sofabed mattress which is pretty good as those go, but much better with the topper.

The concert last night was really interesting, to say the least. The person who had been designated "House Manager" apparently shouted and was otherwise unpleasant to a reserved ticket holder at the afternoon concert when he had been head usher. Most seats are not reserved, which is why people line up hours ahead, but people CAN go to Ticketmaster and for an extra $14 get a reserved seat ticket. They also get front of the line privileges. But he told someone to go to the end of the line and apparently rather unpleasantly. They made the decision to remove him from the evening concert.

But, either he didn't "hear" them or they didn't do it clearly, because about 20 minutes after I got there, he showed up with "House Manager" written on his name tag. A number of awkward moments to say the least. We were quite willing to let him work as an usher and hear the concert (actually he would have really heard the concert in that role. I DIDN"T hear most of the concert). I called home and got the home phne number of the volunteer co-ordinator off my answering machine (fortunately I hadn't erased it). I told him that they had called me around 4 and asked me to be HM and suggested that if he wanted, he could call them directly. He eventually did just that and after talking to Theresa, told me he was very upset and was going home. Probably just as well because it eliminated any tensions and questions over who was in charge.

I was really surprised thought at the reactions of some of the other volunteers who told me how much happier they were working with me. I've worked with him a couple of times, but I just did my job and ignored the fact that he treated me like I didn't know squat. But apparently he uses the role of head usher or house manager as an occasion to power trip which, of course, isn't good if you want to get people working harmoniously together.

Fortunately, I had good people working with me and since the Head Usher had worked the afternoon concert and was tired, we designated a co-head usher. There was a lot to do because there were many reserved seats either for Ticketmaster people or sponsors or special guests - former national leader of a major political party, representatives of the Canada Council for the Arts - other big shots were there as a special award was given to one of the musicians. Festival staff pulled us aside for a huddle and a briefing on all that was going on (and also told me they had been worried when they saw who the original house manager was). The ticket sellers were experienced and amazing although I didn't need 5 on the last concert. LOL We had enough ushers to have 4 working on the reserved seats and I was able to deal with front of house issues and greet some of the special guests and deal with the drunk who walked in off the street and threatened to become beligerant. Once I got him out into the street rather than in the vestibule, I alerted the church custodian who talked to him and gave him an alternative of leaving or having him call the police.

With end of Festival speeches and the award to the musician (more speeches), and probably too much music, the first half of the concert wasn't over until 10. By that time I had two people who couldn't make it to intermission without a cigarette go out on the front steps and then expect to be let back in during a piece of music when they returned. I had two that showed up, probably planning to sneak in during intermission but they arrived early because it was so late.

After intermission, one usher was looking for something sweet for his diabetic wife. Neither of us thought of the St. John's Ambulance volunteer who was attending the concert for first aid. I asked the caretaker if he had anything sweet and he found some cookies, but then I couldn't find the usher - he had gone out to buy chocolate. And I had a partron waiting for Para-transpo to pick her up. I guess they had come early and come to the back door which is wheelchair accessible. Anyway, time was spent with her getting her to a telephone where she could make arrangements to get home.

Literally, never a dull moment during the whole evening. But a great confidence booster to have volunteers tell me how happy it was me in the HM role. Am I going to resume that role again? Nope. Not unless I'm really needed. I still like to actually hear most of the concerts. I never in the past signed up for HM unless I didn't care about the concert and it's still a good policy. Head usher gives me a chance to be as bossy as I want to be w/o being the final authority and w/o the hassle of trying to balance finances at the end (we didn't on either tickets for merchandise, but I don't really care).

Some of the Festival staff and volunteers went out to a local bar where they had a room reserved. I just came home. The volunteer party is tonight. The concert part of it got cancelled because they were all too exhausted and it's probably just as well.

Looks like a nice day here. I'm gonna spend part of it on my knees in the garden rather than go to church. Still have a filthy house and want to make some rhubarb muffins.

Hope you all have a great Sunday.

Ann

Good Morning all. I'm up and had my coffee and read the paper. Now, I need to head off to get dressed for church. This afternoon will be spent preparing for another fish fry. Just told DH that I am sort of tired of this role, we are playing. Treating everybody to our hard earned fish. This will be the 5th one in 2 months.

Well gotta get it moving.

VIann, sounds like there was quite the events to keep you occupied last evening.

Maria, great looking tomatoes. I need the roasted tomato recipe, do you have it?

Sarv, glad the back is better, sounds like you have a lot to do today also. Hope the visit goes well.

Well, I'm up and semi-alert, but I haven't read the funnies yet, so I'll be back later to check up. Raining cats and dogs, yippee! Haven't checked the weather channel but I hope it rains all day and soaks in good.

Bonnie, do you mean for sauce? Or as a side dish?

Waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

I'm up cooffee made sunday funnies read. I'm good to go. Raining cats and dogs here as well. Yippee! I did see weather cahnnel and we have isolated thunderstorms all day. So much for the plans I had for today but thats life.

DH and I went shopping and he is looking or so he says, for the perfect pond liner. I guess I will get one after all its just a matter of when. My thoughts of where to put it set right with him so today I was moving the plants that are there to make way for digging. I figure if I use the suggestion I got here and started digging it out I would get the pond sooner than later. The rain put that on hold though.

It is a good thing I mowed the lawn yesterday while DH was at work. I did it only because he was working 10 hours 5am - 3pm and I knew he'd come home and think he had to getter done. It makes for tired DH when he insists on doing it the same day. Now he says I've got the job twice a week if I want it or not. Don't mind. I'm more careful around the beds than he is.

Grocery shopping and will be looking for that tea that was wanted. ttyl Cherie

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Mornining All! Been up a couple of hours. Part of it lurking. Just finished breakfast. Waited for DH to get up. He's watching Band of Brothers.

Good storm last night. Lightning and boomers.Basement is wet again. Stone foundation. I get north and south rivers when there's lots of moisture. A long time ago during the Jan.- feb. thaw rain it ran from the field right to the house. My lg. chest freezer was floating.[when the neighbor plowed he changed the contour of the field]

Glad to hear you're getting rain further south. Rain off and on all day. Hope we all get some good soakers.

m5 what a kitty pile. They must stay warm and cozy in the winter.

cherie You picked up another job at home. Is he sure he wants to give it up? Wonder what he is looking for in a liner? Maybe 2 for a waterfall?

Picked my first corn last night. I'm so excited. Fresh corn!yum!yum! Today I have corn to freeze. Oh yeah and green beans.Tomatoes are starting to ripen. Cukes slowed down from the heat. Hope they pick up soon.

Sounds like everybody has a busy day planned for a sunday. Some work just doesn't wait.

darius saw the new garden pictures. Those were to busy guys. WE did that this spring so we could put in the corn. Thank goodness for DH!

Hope everybody gets the weather they need and are feeling better.

Waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Still raining. Got the new rain gauge up and we've an inch aleady.

Yes ves i get a waterfall to boot with it. First I need to get diggin,so he doesn't drag his feet purchasing the liner. then once that is in and filled with water I can worry about fish and the plantings next spring. My froggy fountain will do just fine at first. DD#1 was here with DGB when I was mowing and had a fit because I almost ran over a tree frog. Never seen one around here since we moved in so I wasn't looking for anything. just getting the job done.. She took it home with here and put it by her tree! The nerve of that child.

I guess to some I may sound overly selfish always wanting something. After having a first husband like I had Ed is my shining star. He's so sweet, kind, loving generous and funny that I sometimes have to wonder to myself how I ever deserved him. I sometimes find myself taking advantage of his generous nature and I'm not at all proud of that. He always ends up telling me that I deserve tohave things that make me happy. They broke the mold after him.

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

cherie i figured there was a fair amount of rain when I saw the wet basement.

We just had a tree frog on the window last night. Even had one living in the rain barrel for a couple of days. They are so cool! Tell DD#1 that she can do a yard patrol for you before each mowing. I've been seeing lots of little frogs and toads.

What a wonderful DH!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Back again- I take back what I said- I am in agony again with the back. Been sitting on ice packs all morning....Guess I need to break down and take a couple of aleve. I'm in a foul mood too because of it. grrr. asked DH if he would blow off the deck and the lower level area. You'd have thought I asked him to work for hours on it. Sheesh. He wanted to know what was on the deck- just glared at him.....I griitted my teeth and said 'crap' - just blow it...

I need some groceries, but know if I ask him to go to the store it will cause a major blow up. Guess I will pop some pills and waddle there myself...

I did manage to put 4 sugar cookies in the toaster oven to see if a sweet treat made me any nicer - NOT! LOL

deofe- I don't blame you on wanting a break from the fish fries....just smile and say 'not now'

Clouds have rolled in here too - hope we don't get a downpour of rain tho... My heavenly blue MG are opening by our slider and when I sit in my lazy boy I can see them - pretty sight!

Maria= I'll take a loaf of zucchini bread - thank you....

off to grab some aleve and another cookie!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Whoopee! Got leeks and parsnips planted in my new veggie garden this morning, not that I think they might grow well this year. New helper "Brent" is cleaning up the to-be tool shed area.

His dad came yesterday for the tilling... what a wonderful sense of humor he has! He mentioned the previous tenant (female) said she was a Preacher but in reality was also a prostitute. I told him, "Hey, Preachers have to make a living too!" and I thought he'd have a heart attack laughing so hard.

Can't do a dentist, spent all my money on Gracie.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Darius, Parsnips are a favorite here, they are soooo good to cut them in half lenghs wise give it a short boil then saute them in butter, sweet as honwy. Sometimes I use them in beef stews instead of potatoes

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Maria, I use parsnips in roasted winter vegetables. Just coat everything with some olive oil and rosemary, roast at 450º for an hour or so and stir every 15 minutes. I use potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, rutabaga, carrots, winter squash, onions and near the end I add garlic cloves and mushrooms.

I may try them as you suggest!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

do that,Darius, my MIL cooked them that way and so did her mother
I have roasted winter vegetables that way, sooo good. What a feast!!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

never had a parsnip....I think I've been deprived!!

Had rutabagas in pasties- I thought they were potatoes!!

DIL/DGS just stopped over because DGS thought he left his wallet here - had a whopping 28 bucks in it. I was sure I returned it - he wasn't a happy camper! He was on his way to "Michaels' to get some craft thing to do. Oh well, his mom can loan him the $$

I still need to make a run to the store for some fresh fruit and bread etc. Just took two aleve and am on an ice pack...I give it an hour to kick in

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

Just in from a couple of hours in the garden. Finally found some Holey Soles yesterday (like crocs but narrower fit. Dunno whether they are a Canadian knock off or American). Great in the garden and easy to get off when you come in. So far I've found that just a strip of that cheap towel I bought soaked in cold water and tied around my forehead works well to catch the sweat and keep it from dripping on my glasses. Someday I'll cut one and hem the edges. Darius, I made one and put the crystals in it and used it at some of the hot concerts, but found it warmed up too quickly to be much use. I had to keep wetting it.

Cherie - great news on the pond. And so glad you have such a great DH.

ves - corn from your own garden. What a treat! I have only a suburban lot and gave up trying to grow corn a couple of decades ago when I found the d*#m squirrels would pick it the day before I was planning to.

Sarv - I hope the Aleve works.Was it you who had the back problems a few months ago? Is this an ongoing problem with discs?

Darius - sounds ike the new worker is a keeper. And you know as well as I do that dental abcesses can get very serious. Get thee to a dentist, money or not. If some of us helped Twyla, I bet we can do the same for you. Anyone interested, D-mail me.

My DM was a lousy cook and we never had parsnips. Dunno why. but I'm gaining an appreciation of them. Your ideas will all help.

Well off for lunch. BBL.

Ann

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Ann, my coolers stay wet at least an hour and a half, maybe more. Are you soaking them long enough?

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Woke up from a couple hr nap - back still hurts like a son of a gun. No it wasn't me that had a sore one previously...this is new. Just talked to my sis on the 'cell'= she is an hour from our house. I'll feel better with her here- we laugh like idiots.

I never did get to the store - I;ll make her (sis) go with me. I'm trying to eat a plate of chips n cheese and type- what a mess!!

Vi- congrads on having such a successful, but eventful last night of music., That poor old drunk probably just wanted to hear some music to snore too! LOL Glad he was bamboosed with no problem. I gave the egg crate stuff a full week of trial - back aches started soon after I put it on my bed. My arm kept aching, so I thought more 'cush' would help it.

I just went out and hand picked a zillion japanese beetles. Seems like we had a new hatch after our last rain. This is getting so so old.

Well, time to lick the plate... LOL

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Rain seems to have let up for the day, but it's still overcast, and thankfully cool.

Sarv, sorry about your back, and Darius, about your tooth. It's always something, isn't it? Sometimes you forget how good it feels to be well, but you soon get reminded as soon as something else goes haywire. Now, Darius, if some of the old "parishioners" show up, don't be tempted to make extra money for your dental visit....LOL

MMM, parsnips are a treat for anyone, if you haven't tried them, you should. Sweeter than carrots, they go nicely in almost any slow cooked meal. Don't always see them in the big markets. They always have rutabata, the old timers called them "swedes". Was a standby in a root celler because they keep so well. The ones I see in the markets are always dipped in wax.

V'ann, they'll be back with more requests for next year's concerts. They may have had enough of the guy whom you replaced, He needs some new social skills for paying customers.

Cece, congrats on the pond planning. Guess your DH knows an immovable force when he meets it!! I think a pond is nice, I just don't think I would manage it well....aside from the evaporation rate in my shadeless yard.
Tree frogs worldwide thank you for your consideration.

I have lots of green tomatos! Little teeny yellow pear, and the two bigger red tomato plants are all thriving in the heat. Funny, last year they were pretty nonproductive, except the yellow pear which produces more than we can consume, and comes back by the dozen every spring. I pull them like weeds. Forunately my neighbor had a good harvest and brought me nice tomatos and cukes.

Stopped at the Dollar store and only spent $5. Cheap stuff, but useful. Since my last umbrella died a horrible death in a strong wind, I bought another one which looks like it will only survive one good storm. Better than none at all!!

Hope everyone is having a pleasant weekend.

Sheila

Hi everyone!
This is the first time I've felt like posting in several days. :-) I think maybe I'm on the mend and wow am I ever glad. Felt like a horse had kicked me in the arm yesterday ... but am feeling a bit better today.

Ann, sounds like you had *some kind of night last night .. drunks, mad workers and the lot! Whew!

Maria, oh do throw me one of your Zucchini. I love them any way you cook them. Oh and coffee sure does need one of your yummy Zucchini breads, now ya hear? LOL How is Samson doing? Has he quieted down and decided you're home to stay for a while?

Defoe, don't blame you for being sick of frying fish. In fact, I wouldn't blame you if you went on a complete strike! Maybe you should declare a Defoe Day. LOL

sarv, hope you and your back reach a compromise. That pain can *sure wear a body down. Maybe you need some ice cream? :-)

ves, oh oh oh, fresh corn! Yummy! Sounds like your garden is *really doing great. Glad you got some rain to help it along.

Hi Cece ... congrats on getting your pond. You go girl! That's gonna sure be pretty with your frog and all the plants when it's finished. Oh, and I see you got rain, also. :-)

We had storms Friday night. They started around 5 or 6 and lasted late. I powered down early and had to stay down all night. The DH and I finally just went to bed around 9 or 10 which is unheard of for us.

McCool, I am wondering how y'all are doing today? How's your DH feeling?

Casy, if you're around ... please check in and let us know how things are going. I'm feeling disconnected with those who have been sick and have family members sick.

Darius, so how is life with air conditioning? How did it go with those workers you hired. I think I saw where you had hired a couple to do some work for you. Oh ... and what about Gracy? Has she shown up yet?

Well, I know I've knot responded to everyone, but it will take time to catch up. Will just wave to those I've missed for now.

Hi Meezers, we posted at the same time and of course I didn't hit preview. LOL Am ~~~ at you also.

Hi all. It's been a busy week. Inwood has an annual all-town rummage the first Sat. of Aug. We decided to participate this year. Too much furniture, too much junk! I am beginning to hate clutter. We sold quite a bit of stuff - wood shelves, plant stand, dry sink, end table, pingpong table, platform rocker, etc. and the prize was the lawnmower! DH just got it 2 weeks ago to do some work on and resell. And it sold so he is a happy camper!

DD brought 6 years of DGD's clothes and sold abt a quarter of them. Crazy girl had them in a storage locker - I've been trying to convince her for the past 3-4 years to keep her favorite outfits and sell the rest. She is done working next week and returning to school full time so decided now was a good time to sell. She's going to do a rummage in her town in two weeks, hope lots more sells!

I needed the 2x4 the other day but never got around to asking for it. I needed if for my ladder and some dumb kids. 'Somehow' (ha!) the ladder switched around and I stepped off the wrong side last Tues. (3 ft. stepladder). I got a nasty bruise across the bottom of the pad of my right foot. I walked carefully at work Wed. Then went to a local auction sale Wed. night. Two kids (more relatics - 3rd or 4th cousins) were tossing a full bottle of Gatorade and one dropped it - yup, landed right on the top of the same foot, cap down. Yowzers did that hurt!! Couldn't get a shoe on at all after that! Left 15 mins early for work on Thurs, stopped at WW, hobbled in and found some thong-type sandals that bypassed the bruise. Even wore them to church this am! Both top-side and bottom-side are getting better.

Here the heat wave broke finally. We have been in the low 90s most of the week. Even a few upper 80s! And the best part, RAIN, wonderful, glorious RAIN!! Almost 2" this week, total.

DS and Kandyce broke up on the 4th, and I have not spoken to her since. I want to call but am kinda chicken, I don't want her to think I'm trying to push any agenda. Talked to DS Fri. and apparently it is over with the other guy already. That lasted long, didn't it? Her new job is going well and baby k. is doing good too. He didn't know if she had made dr. s appt to get that follow up MRI done. I'm worried that cuz she feels excellent and is busy working now, that she'll just let it slide and she can't do that. It's too impt, it's her life!! I've been keeping up on the ependymoma support group online and it really makes u realize that the patient must be vigilant. I read some interesting stats yesterday. There are approximately 40,000 primary (not as the result of a cancer elsewhere in the body) brain tumors diagnosed a year. Only abt 2.2% of them are ependys and a very small percent of the 2.2% are spinal ependys. But the scary part is that only 59% of the 2.2% were surviving ten years later! One guy had a good comment, "remember that u are not a statistic, u are a survivor!!" Good words to live by. Now, how to convince K. that she MUST get the follow up MRI done..... I'll make it my mission for the week.

Took Aunt JO and MIL to church this am. Stayed for second service too. It gets to be a long day. I left at 9 am to do MIL's hair, and church is from 10:30 to 11:30 and from 1 to 2 with lunch served in between services. We had to grab a few groceries on the way home and after dropping them off at their respective homes, it was 3:30 when we got home. DH is napping. MIL was extremely argumentive and talkative this am. I'm glad she has a pysch dr. appt in two weeks. I think we will have to increase her anti-psychotic again. She's been getting worse gradually over the past few months. Makes me wonder how long she will be able to stay in her apt.

I've really enjoyed the pics lately, Ernie's flowers and veggies are awesome again!!! I envy you your visit out there Maria. If I ever get out that way in the summer, he wouldn't be able to keep me out of that yard! LOL!

~~~~~~Have a good day all! (and hope those who are ailing, get better soon!!)
Back atcha, friend. :) hey, I noticed a bunch of nice starts of the raspberries, about 8 to 10" tall each. Our heat spell broke, think it's too hot to ship still? Should I wait till first week of Sept.?
Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)
Hi everyone, I was busy until afternoon with riding and watering, and then went to a moonlight trail ride, stayed the night and came home this morning in time for shower, church, lunch and now trying to catch up with all of you busy folks. I did get through yesterday's thread but haven't started reading todays.
About mid afternoon yesterday I decided to take Breezy and do the annual moonlight ride. It's a fund raiser for a riding club that works a lot on trail preservation. I belong to the club but haven't done much in the way of extra support beyond paying my annual membership fee. We started riding just about dusk and followed glolites (chemical light sticks) along trails and jeep roads making a circle of 11 miles with a lot of hills. Breezy only coughed once, and we trotted up a lot of the hills which really made him use his lungs. If there was any gunk left in there he would have been coughing a lot. It was fun, most of the riders were just walking, so we would pass them carefully, and then Breezy went trotting along expecting to find more horses to pass. After the ride they served us snacks and refreshments. I went to bed in my trailer about midnight, got up early and came home to a nice hot shower.
Lorie, (did I spell that right?) I hope you survive your week of long work days. It looks like the owner got the mare home just in time! We will all be looking for some pictures of little Fireball.
Our local fire was about 65% contained the last time I looked. No smoke here and there was none where I went for the moonlight ride.
Darius, I can just see 2 old ladies chasing a playful steer! I'm glad Gracie is still appearing at mealtime, she will get over it. Probably she wishes she could have told you she had already been spayed, and maybe had already had the shots too, but you couldn't take the chance on it. We took in a stray dog a few years ago, and when we took her to be spayed even the vet couldn't tell until he opened her up that she had already been done. He said whoever did the job really did a great suture job, the midline showed no scar at all. I looked at the garden spot, those guys did a nice job with the tiller. I have one like it, we bought it in 1982 and have had parts of it rebuilt already. It has rototilled not only our big garden but those of several friends over the years. It was a great investment.
Time to move a sprinkler and get back to reading. Back later.
Hi all-it's nice here!! cool and not humid! I felt sick all day, at first I wondered if I have heart trouble, short of breath, dizziness, nausea and weakness whenever I try to do anything. Slept a few hours and I feel better. I bet I just have screwed up potassium or something like that from the heat of the last week. I don't have A/C here and did take it easy, but still it was more sweating than I usually do!
Anyway, I'm drinking lots of water-should get some bananas too.
sarv-sorry to hear your back was bad again. Backs and teeth are agony, you're right. There's nothing you can do. At least with feet you can try to stay off them...
darius- so many things pulling together, dang that tooth for pitching a fit right now!! The gardens are looking wonderful, I bet you can mulch those parsnips and get them through the winter. I have carrots winter over here. Do you have any row cover stuff for extending the season?
kooger-you are an awesome person for continuing to care for Kandyce. Sounds like she needs it too. Glad your heat wave broke. Your poor foot! Lucky you weren't hurt worse off the stepladder though...what a busy Sunday you had....didn't you know it's a day of rest? ;-)
Mary-The moonlight ride sounds great! I'd love to do something like that. Glad you're missing the smoke and fires, hope they're under control soon.
IO1-I hope you're on the mend. Ouch, there are lots of aches and pains in coffee today!
Ann-What a busy (and confusing at the start) time as HM! I can imagine how relieved all the volunteers were to have you take over.Nothing worse that being a volunteer and being jerked around by someone on a power trip (been there). Sounds like you did a great job -they are lucky to have you!
Hope you got to have a fun day in the garden. Has your weather improved too?
m5-What a picture, I just love it!! I am SOOOO tempted.....but I have three cats already. Wish they'd do all sorts of adorable stuff! Aww, I love em anyway. But i do love your kitty pile.
cherie-congrats on getting your pond started! you will have fun with it. I dug one last year andDH is now enthralled with it, his koi and goldfish, lots of frogs, a chipmunk that comes to the watering hole, and fledgling chickadees and nuthatches have come with their mamas to learn to drink. It is just an amazing attractor of wildlife. I'd always heard that, but didn't imagine it...I enjoy seeing the fledgling birds coming in to drink the best. They're kind of comical.
Twyla- I hope you are doing well with all the trials that seem to come your way.
Maria-great looking veggies! I vote for zucchini bread, in fact I'm due to make a loaf myself. And I totally agree with the parsnips, mmmm. We typically roast root veggies but I will try your saute method.
Hi to all I've missed "in person". I hope you've had a good day!!
Dmc, get some salt tablets from the drug store, read the label and find some that have a fair amount of potassium. Ask the pharmacist for advice. Potassium helps muscles work, and your heart is a muscle. Some people get muscle cramps and are short of breath. Things like Gatorade help too, but the salt tabs are cheaper.
Thanks mary, I'll get to the pharmacy in the morning. I remember using salt tablets when doing strenuous outdoor sports as a teen, and I think because I was "taking it easy" during the heatwave that the possibility of electrolyte imbalance didn't occur to me, but I bet that's what it is. Forgot about the tablets! It would be worth having on hand in the first aid kit too.
I'm ok that way on one else is having it rough maybe..Its just all apart of life.. we all have them.. others worse off to those living on streets..
Potassium tabs at Walmart in the vitamin aisle. Cheap !
Cute picture, Twyla.
Dorothy, I think that salt tabs are probably a good idea although even just drinking a bit of salt dissolved in water would likely help too. I've not had the dizziness, but I've been going through a litre or more of water in one concert. the party tonight was very nice for the volunteers. Beautifully catered. In past years there has always been a party, often a BBQ, but often it seems to have been an afterthought. It WAS, however, in a church hall W/O AC. There were good spots under the fans, but in some spots it was just like being in St. John's church. The church was the hall of the Anglican cathedral; so wine and beer was allowed and provided.
Kooger, did DS ever undergo paternity tests to see if the baby is his? I know you spoke of it at one time. I hope for the baby's sake that Kandyce keeps her job and has the follow-up tests done. Glad you did well selling things, but sorry to hear about your foot. Sometimes a bruise like that can be as painful as something more serious.
Mary - glad your ride with Breezy went well. Good news about the fire.
Hi to all who I've not directly addressed.
BBL to start the new thread.
Hi just checking in before bed and I take Potassium Gluconate 550mg daily. It has Magnesium in it to help you absorb the Potassium. Back to finish reading all the posts.........then bed....Nite Nite Gracie and everyone.....Lauri
Hi everyone,
darius, so sorry for the tooth problem! I certainly can't say that I'm sorry you took pity on poor Gracie, but it sure does seem like the proof of that saying "No good deed goes un-punished." You mentioned some public health program in relation to my current problems and a church group that helped you out before. Do you have access to either now?
I01, I was wondering where you'd gotten off to. So sorry that your arm is giving you so much grief. I hope it has started to heal and will do so at record speed. (If that's not the case, perhaps you could call one of us or have various DGers check in with you each day so that you could dictate your message and not exacerbate your problems by typing. At least that way you could still stay in touch.) You asked about my DH. He has another doctor's appointment in two days and we're waiting to see whether or not he gets the go-ahead to go back to work. He visited the Trader Joe's store where he'd been working today (said he wanted to remind them that he's still alive). They again told him that they'd gladly hire him back as soon as he's able to work. (of course it would be another three months before he became eligible for health insurance, but as long as we can stay healthy for at least three months, things should be okay.) The big question is whether or not standing for so many hours per day would be likely to cause problems with his feet again or not.
Cece, great going in your quest for a pond! The waterfall is a definite bonus.
dmcd, sure hope that the salt tabs take care of your problems. That sounded kind of scarey.
Twyla, I don't know what to say, it seems that you go from one crisis to the next. How on earth do you manage to stay so positive? Those temperatures sound horrible! It never got quite that hot here --- though it was close--- and we were all absolutely miserable.
Today was great --- low humidity and not extremely hot. After the seige of awful weather I was just luxuriating in being able to be out in the garden without turning into a puddle. This year's veggie garden is more grass and weeds than veggies, I'm afraid. Between the unco-operative weather and even less time than usual to devote to it, I'm surprised that anything else is growing at all. I spent most of the day pulling grass out around the bean plants and some of the other vegetables (managed to pull up a few of them by mistake as well because they were so well hidden.) There were quite a few beans ready to pick (and somewhat BEYOND ready) that I discovered once the grass was out of there. Also got about 2/3 of the second barrel of the composter emptied. Hope to finish that and refill both sides before it gets too hot tomorrow. We're supposed to be back into the "sauna" tomorrow, unfortunately.
We had a green salad with strips of left-over steak for dinner tonight. DH asked if I had any weeds in the garden that would be good in it and, guess what, I did! Common purslane comes up in there every year and I'd read that it was edible, so we tried some in the salad tonight. It was pretty good too. I also added some very young Swiss chard, some small nasturtium leaves and a bit of cinnamon basil. DH had a second helping.
kooger, I wish you much luck in helping Kandyce to look after herself and her baby. Good luck with your MIL as well and I hope that your poor foot heals very quickly.
Mary, that moonlight ride sounds really intriguing. I don't know much about horses, but would have thought that if they are easily "spooked" a nightime ride could be pretty hair-raising. Glad that Breezy is so much better.
sarv, so sorry about your back. I sure hope that it's better tomorrow and you can enjoy your sister's visit.
M5, great kitty pic as usual! I'll have to try to get an up-to-date shot or two of D.K. She was strutting around the house today with a furry cat-toy in her mouth --- showing off her "kill", I guess. She managed to get two suppers tonight and was still mewing piteously while I was slicing the steak for our supper. I don't know where she puts it all.
V-ann that was quite the wind-up for your concert extravaganza! I'm glad that you didn't end up in the middle of un-pleasantness with the guy who originally had the HM job. Will you get a chance to put your feet up and rest even a little this coming week?
~~~~~~~~~hi to Bonnie, Maria, ves, and all the usual coffee bunch. Time's moving on and I've written enough to put most of you to sleep already. Sweet dreams to you all.
