The BugFiles Newsletter

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

In case it hasn't been noticed, Dave has now introduced a BugFiles daily newsletter on similar lines to the PlantFiles Newsletter. Just select News and find it just below the PlantFiles Newsletter.
Here is the first one: http://davesgarden.com/nl.php?date=2006-07-31&site=bf

Is todays the first edition?

Yes

Excellent job on that. Now I might finally learn what's 'roaming' around in my garden. Maybe BirdFiles next? I'd really like to be able to identify them too (I'm actually not kidding).

My goodness, now how cool is that!?
I like it! Great new feature.
Pretty soon if people want an education the first place they'll go to is DG University!

Guess I better start taking more bug pics so I can help out. (Wish me luck, I'm a terrible Picture-taker.)

What if I only have a picture and have NO idea whatt he name of the bug is?
How do you, posters, know what the name of the bug is?

Will someone else ID it before it gets added to the Bug Files?

What if the bug is dead, but well preserved? Will that qualify as a picture?

Questions.....questions..... Gita

How about an ID the bug forum like ID the plant forum?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Gita--I don't think you can post a picture in Bug Files unless you know what it is--you have to first find the bug that your picture is of and then go to the bottom and click on upload an image. This is the same way that Plant Files works, if you have a picture you want to put in you are responsible for getting it ID'd first so that you know where to put it. If you need a bug ID'd, for right now you can go post on Garden Foes or some people have been going to the ID forum. There's been some discussion on another thread of whether to start a bug ID forum but right now there's not one specifically for that.

dmj--there a thread going here talking about starting a bug ID forum

That's wonderful news Ken!
Thank you Dave :)

The Identification forum description has been changed to include Insects too. For now it is available for both plant and bug purposes and we'll just have to learn to live and work together with what we have.

Gita, I personally don't see any reason why a preserved bug shouldn't be entered.
It is not easy to ID bugs. You do have to do alot of research on your own in cases where no one else on the DG forums can help.
Example: Internet search .... If it looks like a beetle then just type in "insects beetle" into your search and see what you come up with. Sometimes you'll find your particular beetle right away. Sometimes it takes several hours or days or weeks. Sometimes you just have to give up but hopefully down the road you'll stumble across the info you need.
Someday if we have a separate Bug Files ID forum it would be great to have a sticky with all the bug ID links listed.

PS ... Gita, Ken has been very helpful to correct mistakes made when we enter our new bugs to the files. This may get old to him after awhile (lol) but for now he has been a blessing that way.

Thank you all. I was afraid of that!
Seems like a bit much work to me.

Below is a link to a Bug Guide I had saved in my Favorites. This may help someone trying to ID different bugs.
Brainstorm!!! I could even use it myself!!! LOL
