What would you do?

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4b)

This is the back of our house. It is facing East and gets full sun. As you can see there is an air conditioner to hide and a steep slope. I can't afford to have a retaining wall put in so that is out of the question.

I have started a sculpture that is a series of large beads, 12" - 18" and will be somewhere between 6 and 7' tall. I might make a series in varying heights. I could put it (them) there or in another spot I have that would work well.

At one point I had hollyhocks there with ground cover. Every time it rained there was more erosion. I tried various things to stop the erosion and finally had to give in and plant sod. There are gutters but when we have a heavy rain they don't hold it all. There is also run off from the hill to the left of the photos. The drip line is 12" from the house.

I guess you would say I have a cottage garden, it is definitely not at all formal and I am mainly adding native plants at the moment or at least plants that do not need a lot of water. Our climate is getting more dry every year. I know that a good share of you are not familar with zone 4, but give it a go anyway.

I could paint a mural, but would rather have some kind of flowering plants or bushes. I go around and around in my head and just can't come up with what I want. What ideas do you have?

Left side of back of house. The windows extend across the whole back of the house.
