San Antonio area Plant Swap - People and Plants
Ok..I need some help here. EXACTLY what is this all about? I just saw the thread title..bout plant swap..and jumped in..and now not sure what to do. I am a new gardener..I love perennials..but am wanting to get some really fragrant things going. If yall would, fill me in..I am eager to learn..and willing to share anything I have that any of you may consider worthwhile!! Thanks in advance!
Randa(like a panda!)
Howdy Randa...and welcome.. :) This particular thread is sort of a trade/swap list for all of the folks coming to the San Antonio area Plant Swap on October 15th in Boerne. We're just listing the plants and seeds that we have...and the requests for those plants that we can share...and for those plants that we want, that others may have. Like Linda's list right above your post. :) Its a wonderful way to meet other folks, sit around and talk about your favorite subject, "plants and flowers!" and swap seeds and cuttings. :) I'm really looking forward to my first one on the 15th. and most of us have been getting ready for it for a few months now...with cuttings growing and seeds germinating.
Anyone is welcome to come...family and friends alike....and you don't even have to bring anything...just a smile. :) So hopefully you can make it and come meet some of your fellow DG'rs.. :) And remember, the BIG Texas Swap is on November 4th in College Station. I'd love to go to that one as well.. :)
Melanie
Randa, you're welcome to come to this swap/get-together! It's in Boerne, which is near San Antonio. We're just getting together at someone's place to meet other DG gardeners and most will be bringing plants/cuttings/seeds to swap or share. It will be on October 15th, on Sunday. Hope you can make it. Also check out the thread for the statewide RoundUp, in College Station on November 4th...and I know there are a couple of other get-togethers at other places also. Just bring any plants or cuttings, etc. you think someone might want. List them on the thread if you want pre-trades and read what other people are bringing and ask them to save some of what you want. Hope to meet you!
Linda, could I please have one Damianita? Thank you very much.
Josephine.
Of course, Josephine. Those grow wild on my property...very drought-hardy, probably needs good drainage and a fair amount of sun.
Linda, could I have a Scarlet Penstemon, please o please o please? lol.. :)
Thank ya kindly... :)
Melanie
No problem, Melanie. Did the cuttings of scented geranium take? If they did, I could take one of those.
Not really, Linda...tho I'm keeping an eye on my nutmeg geranium cuttings. The large mother plant just started to completely die in its pot for some reason...and I've had it for about 2 years....I have a feeling that the heat was just too much for it... : / I took about 3 cuttings off of it before it died completely...and tho they don't look so great...I'm still waiting to see what they'll do. My mother lemon-rose geranium is having a battle of its own as well....due to white flys I think...*sigh*..sooo, as much as I love them...they are a tough plant for me to grow....but my patchouli is still holding on..lol..
If those cuttings perk up...I'll bring ya one.. :)
Melanie
Lee...did I imagine it somewhere or did I read that you had some White Ruellia, Ruellia malacosperma 'Alba' ? I think its tall....? lol...I can't remember...well, if ya do...and let me know if you do, lol...could I have a cutting? :)
Melanie
Wow! Thanks yall! All this is really cool...Now, gonna jump in ..again! I have SOOOOO much to learn. I read where yall are gonna trade seeds and what not. Now, bout now, I am probably gonna really show yall how much I need to learn! I dont even know how to go about getting seeds from any thing..and if I did, how in the world would I take care of it so it would grow!! Shoot..I get nervous deadheading!! LOL! So..there it is folks! I am not afraid to say..I NEED HELP!..Any links, personal tips, books, ..well, yall get the idea..would be greatly appreciated!!..Oh! And some of these plants yall have listed..or are wanting...I gotta do some reading on DG.,,I am not sure what all they are..Heck, I dont even know what all MINE are!!...
Randa
(can i stay??lol)
Melanie - yepper.... I had talked to ya about a red ruellia cutting
and told you I had purple, pink & white....but my white is either a young plant or a dwarf variety...(it's not as tall as some of my pinks, and I've always thought they may grow larger) I picked them up early this spring somewhere I can't remember....I'd be glad to bring one for you! Lee

It is sorta like dead heading except you put them in a bag and then sit and watch tv as you unearth the seeds and throw away the junk.
Well, I did it! I had thought about taking one of those propagation classes at Schumacher's Hill Country Nursery (near New Braunfels), but this time I actually did it. What a bargain! For $10, I got the instruction and got to choose among almost all of the nursery's plants for what I wanted to do cuttings on. We'll see what roots...I'll go back and see in a couple of weeks, if not before. They also could use volunteers to help out at the nursery, if anyone has the inclination and a little time.. Some may have heard something about the ordeal Chip Schumacher and his wife have gone through. Chip has Parkinson's Disease and valiantly struggles to keep the nursery going while his disease has progressed to the point that he can barely function at times. In any case, since they took back full control of the nursery, they've got nice sales going on now.

Neat deal, Linda...I need to get out there sometime... :)
Ok....I have a question about the swaparoo...About what time did ya'll want to start? lol, for some reason...I reckon we just haven't gotten that far along to talk about a time to meet at Nada's place....and I've recently discovered that our company picnic is on the 15th as well......but it doesn't start until 5:30 in the afternoon. I'm all for 10 or 11 am.....but I'm open to anything.. :)
What do ya'll think?
Melanie --->---@
Anytime after 10am is fine... As long as everyone is gone by 10pm I'm ok...
We also need to talk about food and door prizes (if we want them) and anything else.. It is 3 weeks from now!
I probably can't get there before noon since we have a long way to drive, but you guys can start earlier and we will join you before lunch.
I think door prizes are nice and a fun thing to do, usually something small and fun, or related to gardening.
As far as food I could bring a cake and paper products such as plates, napkins, cups, and utensils.
We need directions to your house, and maybe a phone # in case we get lost.
I am getting excited, how about you guys?
Josephine.
Being that it is at my house... I will have water, ice tea, and coffee available so people don't have to bring drinks unless they just want to.
ok why doesn't everyone that can bring a door prize item.
An old book you don't need anymore that is about bugs or plants or dirt
A plant
A packet of seeds
An old tool that you don't use but is still ususable
Anything else garden related you can think of
Okay, I added Gayfeather to my list. I'm rescuing some along the highway where they're going to eventually widen the highway. I dug up some today and will be getting more. As far as I can tell they're Liatris mucronata. I also saw a plant today I'm not familiar with (yea, I just love seeing a new native!). I think it's Marsh Fleabane...it was by the side of a creek. Yes, I'm getting excited! First those cuttings (I am so hoping at least half make it), then the plant rescue today. And a swap to meet more of you guys soon! Nada, what plants can I bring you? One tip I've got from a previous swap where I was having trouble figuring out where to turn off the main road...a couple of signs, or balloons, or anything near your place would help at locations where people are going to be turning might help...besides directions, of course. Gotta think about what I'll bring.
I will take anything you are willing to bring But I don't beleive I have any Gayfeather yet. *giggle Once you see my place you will understand why. I have LOTS of land and lots of plots but only a few plants in each. I bought only a few cuz of money and also cuz I know some of them will grow so big they will eventually take over that area. Some have... some I planted too close... some I planted too far... some died.... you know the drill. *g
Thanks for the thought about signs. I will see about making some up on my computer. I'm working up directions to my place today and checking them out when I go home tonight before I send them out.
I'm excited too.......! Can't wait to meet you guys....and proudly hand out my Texas BoP seedlings, lol...My cuttings have been looking sort of so-so....but I've still got a few more to attempt... 11-ish to 12-ish sounds good to me..I definitely don't think we should camp out at Nada's house until 10 pm, lol.....
Would anyone like to have a small bromeliad that a co-worker gave me? Its a nice little guy, I guess, but I'm not much into bromeliads very much.... let me know.. :)
Melanie
Hey guys the date is getting close, where is everybody?
I'm here . . . been out enjoy'n the cooler weather we've been have'n lately :) We got a nice little shower today . . . nearly an inch out here where I am :) wooooooo ha :)
They're say'n we are going to have temps down in the 50s at night and highs in the 60s later this week :O Hope it stays nice and cool for this weekend too :)
Lookin' forward to it! Ditto on the weather!
Hello everyone,
still around though I think I have biten off more than I can chew. I still plan on attending and meeting everyone. I will be bringing my seeds (moonflower vine, luffa gourds(sponge) and some Pride of Barbados. Sorry that I am unable to contribute to the grown plants, but I have been so busy that I have lost most of the plants I have had and only the seeds seem to live on. lol.
calvin
don't worry about it calvin... I'm sure we will enjoy your company and your seeds...
I keep checking in, not saying much, just reading all your coments.
lol....I'm raising myself back from the land of a work schedule from Hades these past 10 days.. :p
But I'm here too...and starting a 2 week vacation.....yeehaww.....whoa...almost passed out there...lol.. Anyhoo.... :) And so I'm hearing about this humongous cold front blasting in from the north which should arrive this late evening. And they've raised the rain chance to 40% on Sunday. If it does rain....are we still going to have our get-to-gether? My wee seedlings are starting to look a bit anxious.. :) Can't wait to see you guys.. :)
Melanie
Yes... even with rain we should be able to handle it.
I've been to swaps where it poured. That never stopped any serious gardener. Some rain should be fine as long as we can duck under something.
I plan on putting up a tarp in one place in case... and there is always the house
Will see y'all tomorrow...everyone drive safely!
You too Lee! I have a wee white orchid tree and some red ruellia with your name on it...lol :)
Melanie
wonderful! This will be so much fun!
I think so too... :) I do hope it doesn't rain....as I look out my window and its pouring right now...lol..but we so need it.. I think I just saw my desert willow dance a jig for joy...lol
Melanie
looks like it will be raining but that doesn't matter. plenty of room around here.
We really did need this rain. Felt good this morning to wake up to hear rain. Good weather for my cuttings. And for plant rescues or moving plants. See ya tomorrow. My truck will be loaded with plants (way too many, will have to leave some behind) and ready to go by this evening.
lol Linda.....I only have about 20 or so cuttings ready to go....I wish I had had more room to create some more....but they look pretty good.. :)
Wasn't the rain just wonderful this morning? Dang...its just refreshed everything....I can still see alot of migrating butterflies outside of my window...
Melanie
Melanie, I've released about 35 new Monarch butterflies this week, will have a few more to go today! Hope some make it to Mexico! And return in the spring! I potted up a few of my "Schumacher's cuttings" that had rooted well already by this week. I'll have to wait and see on some others. But what a bargain! Should have done this long ago.
