I should have bought it....................

Don't you hate it when you travel a long way, find an interesting plant but control yourself and then regret it!!

It had no name on it but the leaves came out spotted.

But then the older leaves had much more silver over them.

Oops........ wrong forum.

Don't you hate it too when you post a whole thread in the wrong forum? LOL It is not even 6 here and I have been up since 3. I need to go to bed. LOL

Looks like a variegated winged begonia Kell. I've never seen one of these - it is beautiful.

Kell, I was laughing at each post..I knew you boo booed...lolol...and I do that all the time..hold myself back and then regret it..so what I do is stand there talking to myself for a long time and making sure that I wont go home crying...lolol.....Judy

Kell, darling dont worry, it was the HEAT! (my car thermometer in Novato!)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Tussee, I am so mad I walked away but nothing will make me go back there today. See Lali's thermometer. I went to Novato the day after Lali took that picture. I melted yesterday. 115 degrees. I thought I was going to stroke out, esp by the 4th nursery. LOL! I am so bad. I am a delicate flower that just can't take such heat.

Judy, I must admit I did have my cart full of other beauties. The way I was looking at it was I was doing a mission of mercy. Rescuing all the pretties I could fit into my car and taking them to the East Bay where they would revive with cooler temps. My husband did not quite see it like that though. LOL

Do you have begonias, Tussee? I am so addicted. Here is my latest thrill.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

You and I are two peas in a pod - we've never met a plant we didn't like. I love begonias but have none as beautiful as the one you pictured. What is its name? I particularly like the red leaved ones but they can be so fussy about humidity and water. Here's a pretty one I bought this year - nothing special but growing nicely, B. Raspberry Crush.

I agree, they can be so fussy! One mistake and they die it seems. I do not have enough humidity here so I run out all day and water the surrounding areas where I have them stashed hoping to increase it. What we do for love. LOL. Your Raspberry Crush is just lovely! It sure seems to love what you are doing for it. I love the Rex too but have better luck with the rhizomatous begonias, preferably the hairy weird ones. Canes hate our winters here, too cold and wet which is a combo that can be lethal to the Rex too.

Speaking of never meeting a plant you do not like............. I saw some great pics yesterday on Dave's of caudiform plants. And I thought, geez, I just love that look. I am so glad I was not at that sale for I would have come home with one or 2 for sure. Do find these appealing? Look at the ones Lali (begoniacrazii) posted. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/625449/

Here is one of her photos I stole to entice you to go look at her pics. I think they are so cool looking and I wonder if they are not easy to keep too.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

nothing special? What!? It's awesome!!! Send it my way if you ever get tired of it! LOL. I think I'm in the pea pod myself! LOL.

I just walk around with my 'Will Work For Begonia's' sign around my neck!
It's on a dry erase board so I can change the 'begonia' to what ever my plant fancy of the moment is.
Saturday it read 'Sansevierias'!

Kell, why haven't I seen that one yet! better hide it from me! LOL.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I had one of those .. it was called an Angel Wing Begonia .. it was about 5 feet tall! Then my father killed it from overwatering it.

X

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh X, a stately cane is so grand looking. Sue has one I just love. Begonias seem to do better with a bit of neglect in the watering department. What a shame. The angle wings bloom great too indoors!

LOL Lali girl. I just emailed you when I finished posting and asked where are you this AM and here you show up immediately! LOL. I had meant to tell Tussee that I do not know the name of that one, but that my technical adviser Lali Girl, would know. LOL

The one I posted is the one you got a few weeks ago Lali and made me so jealous I went to every Sloat I knew till I got 2 for myself. LOL You are so bad for me.

I too love the sinus curl like in your Rex, Tussee. Here is one I adore.

Thumbnail by Kell
Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Kell, I need the name before I can leave home and wander endlessly seeking your last pictured begonia! Lol. I need a second greenhouse for sure.

Tussee

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Tussee. If you have a Sloats, you should start there on your quest. LOL. I have no names, and sadly Cottage Gardens doesn't believe in tagging their begonias. I wonder if they have them listed on their website. Lali girl usually comes thru for me. She is the brains in our friendship. I store all I forget there. She is much younger than I am, and that is my excuse and I am sticking to it.

GH culture for begonias really helps. You could have so many incredible specimen begonias, Tussee. I would then have to throw myself at my computer screen in lust at all yor pics if you do get a begonia GH! Oh to have some room.

Here is a beauty too.

Going to steal a photo of yours too. This one I'm told by some very smart begonia heads "probably B. U400 or a hybrid of it"

Thumbnail by begoniacrazii
San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Except if you are human Lali and it is your nose. LOL.
So where do they come up with such names as B. U400?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

It means that that begonia hasn't been identified yet (species) so they give it a 'U' number meaning Unidentified species #400.
the Astro branch keeps a great page of info/photos on them

http://swregion.tripod.com/uxxx.htm

here's the one I think we have. http://swregion.tripod.com/uxxx/spic_uxxx/U400.jpg

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Ohhhhhhhhhhh so it is a species and not a hybrid. Well those are so cool to have been created by nature.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Since you have this thread subject twice I'll just answer to this one so it doesn't get so confusing.

your comment was
"What a great name. Not. LOL
b. 'U168' I would never remember that one for sure. "

**
Yea, not very romantic, however, as the species is determined, they get a name. I know some new ones got their names while we were at the convention. I think Jooolz or Butch can elaborate possibly but I dont remember which ones they were. I think it might be in The Begonian.

I'll thumb through my recent issues and see what I can find.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Well that was weird, this thread was here, then in the begonia forum and now here again! Well any hoo I found it again - whahappen!?

Hey BTW, I wanted to pick your brain Kell about my brugs. maybe you recall that I had spider mites so I treated everyone with Bayer, and then every one got fed MG and then I did messenger. BUT the weird thing is that the 'tree' shaped ones all sprouted lush healthy new growth below the "y' and dont seem to be doing much at the ends where I saw the most damage on the mature leaves. What do you think?

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Hey, y'all, they had nice, big and very pretty rex begonias on clearance for $2 at our local WalMart today. The one I got is about 14 inches across, red on the bottom and very irridescent on top. They also had some that looked similar to the second one Kell posted.

They had a little bit smaller but still large pots of regular begonias on sale for $1. The pots were about 6 inches square and a bit deeper than that.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It is magic, Lali! LOL. Or maybe you are seeing things. Or is that not seeing things? LOL

You are in luck, since we are in the Brug Forum, I will answer you. LOL So are the stems looking healthy above the Y?? Did you get rid of the mites? Are you spraying your top growth with water when ever you water them?

In this heat I would not fertilize or use that Bayer rose stuff. It will stress them too much. But when it gets cooler and if your brugs are in total shade since you are so much hotter where you are than where I am, I would Neem the top. I bet you still have bugs.

Since these are the standards, clip off the side growth. And when cooler, I would foliar feed the top a few days after you Neem it. Can you send me a couple of pics? Are they suckering or just side growthing. LOL

Thumbnail by Kell
San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh WOW Hart. I have never seen a 14 inch Rex, yours must be a delightful sight. And what a price. Our Walmart rarely has plants of distinction. And I do not have the karma to walk in on such a clearance. I am green in envy!

Edited to say if Lali and I lived near you we both would be out the door to Walmart. And I would be hoping I would get there first. LOL. Lali is much nicer than I am.

Let's see, I did the bayer/feeding thing way before this current heat wave (maybe two weeks ago?)
I'm assuming I got rid of the mites since I removed the sick looking leaves and it had defoliated a lot on it's own (I say it, but I mean my collection of 6 or so) all except 'Peaches & Cream' which I recall you said doesn't get them like the others do.

When it cools down this evening (yea right! 90º is 'cooled down' for us, as it's 110º outside right now) I'll try and get a photo or two and check for the little buggers.

My collection in the front yard (which were all the ones I received in a trade last fall from a fellow Daver) are not having any problems. These are the brugs I started in my 'bubbler' batch when someone here posted the 'how to' here - They all rooted for me and are thriving now! There's a first!
Plus Butterfly and Maya are in the front yard. The 'cutting' you gave me! LOL

The ones having issues are b. suavolens, b. Dr. Seuss (or so it was labeled but oddly looks *just* like the suavolens, and three from Parks last spring labeled only 'pink', 'yellow' and 'white' (sigh... that was before I discovered the BRUG forum and see all the beauties you brug-heads grow!)
Perhaps they are just weaker hybrids/species? I don't know much about brugs so y'all will have to wise me up a bit! LOL.

All are in shade under the walnut trees. So they get dappled light but not deep shade nor direct sun. oh yes, one more thing, they are all in pots/containers.

Hart, do please show us your Rexie! Salivating at the thought of 14" Rexie leaves!! Woo HOO!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Some brugs are mite magnets. And oddly I have noticed some years particular ones won't get mites even if you bath them in mites, and then the next year they get covered in them so out went my mite resistant adjective.

So I think it may have to do with how much lush green growth is calling out to them or perhaps a weaker plant is a calling card too.

Also if they are grouped together, they may be passing them back and forth.

I was just out, wetting around my begonias again. It is hot here too at 91 degrees. This is unheard of by the Bay. I have done nothing today. I am a failure as a house wife too. Soon Tom will be home to no dinner, no clean house, not even nice plants. Do you think Tom will be appeased when I tell him I got the begonias thru yet another day of heat? My main feat. And I ate his lemon bar. I am in such trouble.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

The Begonia's are beautiful but I surely don't need another addiction. LOL Where would I keep them this winter? LOL
Poor Tom, Kell you ate his lemon bar???? For shame. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, Ada. It was a Star Buck one and delicious. Almost as good as the one that was mine. LOL. He hasn't noticed yet. I still haven't served dinner. He is not happy.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

91º! HA!
It's only just now down to 95º outside!

I'll do photos in the a.m. still too hot and getting dark. I think I'll space the brugs out more, I have the room to do it, just haven't yet.

Poor Tom!

Ahelms, begonias make incredible houseplants! just provide bright, indirect light, humidity for rexies and maybe others if your house is on the dry side. don't over water and viola!

(always trying to convert yet another innocent plant lover to the begonia side! Worked for Kell, one down 250,000 other Davers to go!)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

LOL My house is full of Brug seedlings and other plants for the winter, not enough room to add a bunch of Begonias and the greenhouses will be too full. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Ada talks tough, Lali but she is a push over. All we have to do is start sending her pictures of them and she will cave like house of cards. LOL

It is 77 degrees here now. Tom is eating a cooked chicken from Trader's Joe's and a sliced tomato. But I did microwave the chicken. And he even thanked me. Ever since I retired, I can't seem to do anything so he appreciates even a small gesture. Am I not so lucky??

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Shame on you, Kell for telling that. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Ada, it is so the truth. You are the only person I know who has bigger eyes than I do. We are needy people Ada and very predictable. LOL

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

But I have a little more room than you, Kell. LOL Of course, it gets smaller everyday.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

[[waving]]] Pea Pod Brigade here, checking in for duty!!

Rex I have had in this pot for 1 1/2 years now that get ignored except by the occasional bug/slug.

Wow, it looks great Sue.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Sue, AKA Pea Pod Brigade, do you take cuttings from your plants and dispose of the large plants in the late fall? I"ve read of begonia people doing this but I'm afraid to try. My luck, the cutting will not take and I have thrown away the mother plant.

Tussee

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Mine stay out year round, I meant to post above that it was in a pot 1 1/2 years, I updated it. All the leaves disappeared during the wet rainy season but as soon as it got warm, they showed up again. We have mild winters here usually, only a couple of nughts it got below freezing, a good frost would most likely do them in. I just bring my most valuable ones in the living room for the winter months, they do great there as I have bright morning light. Some stay all year in the living/dining room but most are happier outside and really seem to thrive.

On one hand, Sue, I'm envious of your mild weather but then reality sets in and I'm thankful for my winter respite. I do not have the time to garden year around and with your climate, you can do just that. Your Essie Hunt reminded me some of B. Madame Queen.
