I should have bought it....................

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I have never seen this plant look so bad, but that's my fault for not repotting it in three years! It still remains one of my most favorite, but I'm having a senior moment just now and the name will not come. I feel so guilty, I'm going out there now and repot it.

What lovely begonias! I only have one, my mother in law was given it as a gift when my husband was born 35 years ago. It has been as big as 8' tall and cut all the way down, and everything in between and over again many times thru the years. I thought the move to Nevada would kill it, but nothing seems to phase it... I re-potted it for the first time in a decade last fall and broke about 2/3 of it off in the process, now everyone i know has some of it. LOL

Is it an angel wing? Someone told me that once.

It looks like a winged begonia but I do not know its name.
My last photo is B. Cowardly Lion. The memory did not improve; I found the tag while repotting. :)

I can smell a begonia from a mile away! LOL. It's one of my FAVORITES, but it hates me. Not humid enough, But I keep trying it!

Lali - Zero, Brevirimosa - Four!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I want a Brevirimosa too! When I see it in Logee's catalogue it is always sold out. But if you kill it Lali, I have no chance.

WOW Tussee, you have some good begonias. Cowardly lion is a fav of mine.

Melissa, I love the spotted canes and they flower so freely. Yours must feel like a member of your family! Yes, you have a angel wing begonia. Lali might be able to ID it exactly.

Sue, I love Essie Hunt too. I have that one and just love the red vein.

I have underplanted some of my brugs with begonias this year. So far so good!

hi Kell that is a begonia this year i grew the non stop begonas and they are beautiful their rose flowered ones and large carnation type. a good sorce for begonas is logee,s nursery. Bob ps i thought on the brug thread that was a strange brug. Bob

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Bob! I have heard the nonstop ones really do bloom nonstop. I need to try them. Do you have any pictures of yours?

LOL, yes a strange brug indeed. Seems brugs are driving most of us to despair so actually maybe some of us are up for a new plant obsession. LOL

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Yep, I second that. I now grow brug trees for the shade I need to grow begonias.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Sue! Or we could use them to grow our vines on.

Speaking of vines.............
I finally found a plant Tom LOVES!! He came running in all excited, I have never seen him so enthralled before over a plant. He dragged me out to see this incredible flower by the front door. I had totally missed it.

Kell........when ever do you sleep. :0)) you seems to be up 24-7.
Have a question. What is the differens between suckers and side growth on brugs.
Janett

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Janett. I am about to go to bed now. I have to be up early too for I have a full day which includes lunch and nursery hopping with another Daver. Such hard work. LOL

I can tell you what they mean to me................ A sucker is a fast growing shoot that grows usually straight up from below the soil from the roots. It can also be a similar fast growing shoot growing from the lower part of the plant, above the soil line. I have had brugs sucker from below the soil and also from above from the lower trunk of the brug.

A side growth to me is just a normal growing shoot from the trunk that does not grow straight up like a sucker does.

If I want a standard, I leave the sucker on the mother brug till it is the height I want. I do this because they grow so fast when still attached to the Mom and they grow straight up, making a great standard form.

Hope this helps Janett! Night!

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Thanks Kell.
Hope you have/had a great nap
We call that Watershoots. If the sucker come up trough the soil do you cut it above soil or do you "dig" it out and cut it close to the starting point. I have a two of those on the one I posted June 25:th that flowered for me. They started to grow from the soil after it flowered the first time. They have a trunk 1 inch thick are 2 ft high and have just Y-ed and I went out and checked............THEY HAVE BUDS.

Good Morning Janett! Sounds like you will have more brugs any minute. You can cut them off either way. If you leave a node, you will get more shoots. Some here too call them watershoots.

So are you getting a greenhouse?

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Yes I am buying a greenhouse. BUT I will wait a while because I cant build it togheter OR use it.The ligaments have gone in my right shoulder so I have trouble with my whole right arm. It cramps up and goes numm.. I have been to Dr and now I am waiting for app with the Orthopedic. If ( I HOPE) they operate it will take even longer before I can even start to use it.. With the ligament gone the nervs get pinched big time.

I dont want anyone to build it for me. Half the fun is telling your self " I MADE THIS" and to be proude of it. I reallly love to use hammers screwdriver etc and love to build things.
I have started to be pretty fast typing with my left hand :0)) and I have learned to type with more then left indexfinger..hehe every bad thing have at least one good thing with it.

Kell - when I was on the mainland in May, there was a huge basket of begonias in every box store for sale...small leaves, big bushy growth and Coast Guard Orange flowers. It was really too large and $$$$ to buy and bring back....and the cuttings I "rescued from the floor" never survived the trip. Have you seen it?

Kell...
I love that vine. I have circled that one and a couple of others in the Logees catalog. I keep thinking I will order it. Then I keep telling myself... "I don't need any more plants. LOL

Aristolochia gigantea "Pelican flower" is the name of the one that Logees has. http://logees.com/prodinfo.asp?number=R1065-4

Yes, I was asking about Carol's. Do you know the name? Thanks

Tussee

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm wondering if Carol's begonia was 'Orange Rubra' an everblooming cane type. It is one of the more common orange flowering canes.
Unless she saw a tuberous type. C'mon Carol - do tell!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gee Janett, you are brave. I would never attempt to build even a box. You must be good at such things to attempt a greenhouse! When you get it all done and it is full of flowers, you must take pictures for us. Or better yet take pics as you build it so we can see your progress. I hope your arm heals up fast and that they do do the surgery for you. It must be so hard to have to do everything with just one arm and hand.

Carol, no I have not see that one. I sounds so beautiful though! You didn't take any pictures?? Of course I had to look at B. Christmas Candy, Tussee. So pretty!

Is this the one Carol?

Oh Bob that is just so lovely. You must adore it. I am going to grow more of the tubers next year. They really are miraculous how they grow such big fleshy plants from those funny looking tubers.

Betty, I bought my Aristolochia gigantea last year in a small pot at a local nursery. I got a couple of flowers. It lived all winter outside and just started flowering now. It is in a tall slender pot and it has taken off. I think it is so neat looking. It has been so very easy for me as it seems to live on neglect. I also have a miniature one that hasn't flowered yet this year. It is so neat in that it makes a basket out of its seedpod and holds the seeds inside. This basket is from last eyar, and look, it is still on and full of seeds. LOL

Isn't the little basket cute. Just cut it off and sit it on the shelf full of seeds. LOL Have you tried planting the seeds?
