Coffee...and for July 21, 2006
Defoe- Im with you! TGIF. By the way, there's hot cherry pie on the counter cooling. Help yourselves. Im off to bed now. Catch up with you in the morning.
Katy
Katy, what kind of cherries do you use in your pies?
I found some small black ones at my son's that are ripe but are ver y tart. Not as tart as the others but I think they would make great pies. if there is such a thing.
Happy Belated Birthday TGIF!! I hope it was a great day..
Happy Anniversary sgtdot. Congrats on the years...
Thanks for the ideas on dinners and McCool, LOL that is what I fixed for dinner last night except I had fresh pineapple...great minds think alike...well yours anyhow since mine is fried from the heat...
hope, I never thought of the crock pot.I will have to get it back from DS when we help him move this weekend....if I can find it.
vess, thanks for the web site. I'll try to get to it tonight after work.
~~~~~~~~~~To everyone else since I have to get moving or be late for work...Have a great day..see ya tonite..Lauri
Karen there are four great pies on the counter right now. Linda made two cherry and two raspberry blue berry combos last night in the heat. It took 799 cheries to make two pies I wonder if she cut the odd cherry in half or let one pie be bigger than the other lol. The crust recipe Maria gave Linda is perfect.
Lauri crock pots make the best soups and corned beef and cabbage better get yours back and try it out. Well maybe soup is not the thing for this time of year but one has to eat heat or not.
Off to work All have a good day. Ernie
What? Am I the first one up? (at a decent hour that is). Didnt get to check in or even read your posts yesterday. Work was so busy and today will probably be awful as well. We are always swamped toward the end of the month so Im already dreading it. At least tomorrow is Saturday!
Last night when I got home from work I had to go out and pick some figs as they were falling off the tree they were so ripe and I hate to see them go to waste. I made another batch of preserves last night. Also had to pick some for a lady I work with as I had offered her some about a month ago for when they got ready and she has held me to it. I will be taking her a big dishpan full today and the figs will probably need picking again by Sunday!
Just finishing my 1st cup of coffee now and have already been out to look at my pretties. Gotta get up now and get these kids ready to go and off to work with me. Hope you all have a good day and I will be checking in later. Happy gardening! :)
Morning everyone!! Supper last night was leftover boiled potatoes ,onions,zucchini and ham fried together. With a side of fresh cucumbers. Not one of DH favorites [he isn't nuts about the zuc.] but he eats anything I put in front of him. I think i'm pretty lucky!
He mentioned going out for supper tonight. Maybe I should cook that more often!
Yes I'm putting off going out and working on the wall or digging for glass and such. this is much more fun.
eweed enjoyed your pie story. Love it when I can read and get a good chuckle.
Hope all family and animal members are doing better today!
BL Vicki
Morning, I'm here but not for long. It's just a beautiful day for golf, and I'm ready to head out the door. Went out and gave the pots and hanging plants a good drink since we didn't get enough rain to wet your thumb, Cece got it all. They keep saying rain but I don't believe them any more, they are just saying that!
Ernie, who's going to eat all those pies? You better get started! I picked up blueberries the other day, but I froze them for later. Tell Maria hello again for us, unless she gets to read this herself! We miss her daily chat. And her delicious menus.
In spite of the heat, the gardens look pretty good. Daily drinks help. My oriental lilies are starting to bloom, and the phlox too. Still waiting for DH to take his helicopter ride and take pictures from above. We'll have to photoshop the grass, some places are pretty brown!! LOL
OK I'm off....check in later and see what's going on. Have a great day!
Sheila
Hi I guess now M5 will think I'm a rain hog. I can't help it chose here to fall but I like.
How is everyone doing this fine morning? I never got that nap yesterday, never got anything done outside either. DGB was here til 7 then I laid down on the couch. Woke up at 2am and went to bed and slept til6:30. I am feeling mighty darn chiper this morning. On my 2nd cup of coffee went outside for my morning inspection of the pretties and now I'm here. Last night they said sunshine for tday and all weekend with isolated showers here and this morning they clain cloudy today partly cloudy Sat and Sun with a chance of isolated showers. Should have known that was coming. County Fair is in town this weekend and it always ends up raining on the main acts that start at 7. I'll try to send it to everyone that needs it.
George Thourogood is playing Sunday and DH wants to go. I pesonally don't want to cuz the music is just so loud. But he was nice and went to summerfest with me for Hank Williams Jr and he despises country so to be fair................things women do for love. Hey??
Deofe Friday has always been my favorite day. Period whether I'm working or not.
Before I went back to school and got certified In career I can't find a job in, I worked in grocery stores in the deli dept. Weekends holidays and evenings for the first 10 years of my divorce. My kids were young then too. For ten years I worked every Easter, Memorial day Easter Fourth of July Labor Day Thanksgiving and christmas eve as well as new years eve til 10:30 at night. I sometimes never got out of there till almost midnight with cleanup. After Kohls left WI market I vowed never to work again some where that was nights weekends and holidays. I maybe doing that again now and its very depressing. I think I've done my time and now deserve to spend the time with the things I like to do and spend time with I my family but ..............things get so difficult. Sorry I'll get off the pity pot now. Till DH absolutely makes me actually go back to work.....garden is my days; him and the kids who still live at home and DGB&D and older DS (when I can get a hold of him) at night. Oh and my computer time.....I'm enjoying this immensely.People here are so friendly and some are so funny.
Have a good day to everyone. Cherie
Pooh, just got ready to type a nice reply and another adjuster called, wants me to come over to the storage unit in 20 minutes, and then back here to see the damaged goods.
BBL
Good morning all. Got to sleep in this morning. Gosh that really is a treat. Didn't get up till 8:00. I have to take the car in for an estimate this morning ( where I tore the mirror off), then I need a trip to the pharmacy, and may try to take in some yard sales.
To all of you who are cheerful morning people, please curb your enthusisiam, it takes me awhile to get going. DH used to whistle and sing early, and it irritated the crap out of me.
Well, gotta get moving, if I am to salvage any of the morning. Will be back later.
Hi all
i was MIA yesterday. My 17 year old son had to be picked up after a week of volunteer work in Ky. and my 19 yr old daughter left at midnight to catch a flight out of Montreal to go for two weeks to a mission in Nicaragua.
I was scrambling to buy extras for her to pack in every remaining speck of luggage space. The director had put mirrors on the wish list. many of the kids in the school and orphanage they support don't even know what they look like. I was lucky to find unbreakable shower mirrors at a closeout place ( a miracle) and bought 15 of those, a dozen folding hairbrushes with mirrors in the handles, and dozens of combs, brushes, hair scrunchies, and little makeup bags. My daughter will assemble grooming kits when she gets there.
It's steamy and pouring here and the mosquitoes are bad. I did my garden walk and will now clean...haven't cleaned in weeks....and it shows.
darius-I hope you're getting good news from the adjuster
Ernie and katy-Watch out cherry pie is my favorite. Any kind of cherries, sweet or sour, but mainly the pie cherries....mmmmm AND I didn't get ANY cherries this year = missed the farmers market
~~~~~WAving to the rest of you~~~ I hope to get back later
V-Ann, send me a mailing address vis Dmail and I'll send the pattern for the head bands to you.
Good morning. Ha, I have to laugh at myself, I just typed good mooning. Do you think all these years of living in cow country have had an effect on my thinking.
Yesterday I just keep weeding and watering until dark. About an hour or so before dark my neighbor who owns the sheep came over to put up a hot fence so we could move the sheep into the orchard to mow the grass. We have stacks of old lumber, fencing materials, pipe, and farm inpliments stored in one section of the orchard and don't want the sheep climbing on things and knocking lumber piles down, so the hot fence is a necessity. He had yearling cattle in there a couple of months ago and the grass is a foot or so tall again. They are very happy again, at least they will be for a few days.
Ernie, LOL on counting the cherries to make the pies. Did you think to count the raspberries and blueberries too?
Hi to Maria, I'm glad you are having a nice vacation and a look at the beautiful Pacific Northwest. You should come back when all the tulips in the Skagit Valley are in bloom.
Darius, I hope the new adjuster gives you some satisfaction on your claim. It's bad enough to have the damaged goods and so you sure don't need the runaround. How did you get a second adjuster? You do know how to get things done! I like the name you choose for your kitty.
Got to go now, the man from the window coverings place will be here in a few minutes to install our new roll up Roman type shades. I'll be back later.
Wow, a few names I don't know. HI to all of you.
Well I managed to get the back watered and cleaned up a bit before coming in to get ready to take DH to the hospital. I just wanted to pop in a say Good Morning. Hopefully I will be able to report only good things when we get home.
Have a great day everyone.
The second adjuster is the local adjuster's boss. They looked again at the storage unit, and then came to the house to look at the damaged prints. Both said they know nothing about art, probably typical in this largely rural farming area.
Fortunately, all of the damaged prints are by a well known California artist, David Lance Goines, and there is a web site of current values. The 6 damaged signed prints total over $5,000, plus maybe another $1,000 in damage to other unsigned prints. The books seem to be recovering in this heat so maybe they can be saved. Some are out of print.
What makes me so angry is that these prints have been carefully stored in acid-free paper in a portfolio box for 30 years with no damage, my total investment account LOL. A few framed prints have some minor damage to the edges of the matting but the expensive framed ones seem okay.
Gracie has not used the litter box I put out on the back deck for her (and where she stays most of the time), so I'm thinking she was never an inside cat? She's sure friendly, though. Loves to be petted. I'll get a photo when I can. Hard to do because she wraps herself around me when I go out there and I can't get a distance shot. Maybe when I feed her?
Some gladiolus have appeared in a huge neglected clump in the front yard. I weeded the rest of a long front bed last night and will move the glads there in the fall. The bed has hostas in it and I will move them to our shade garden area when Mike gets the rest of it cleaned out.
Unpacking my pantry is proving difficult. I have less space to use and a lot of wasted space using the plastic shop shelving from Lowe's. Guess I need to build some custom shelving to fit the space... in my spare time! I haven't yet unpacked any dishes, just pots and stuff to do some canning. My house is a wreck!
Good Luck, Casey. You both are in my T&P's.
darius she's so pretty. yellow or green eyes? I love green eyes on a cat. Either name fits her fine. I've got a Leon and Furby. Brothers we rescued out of a parts car in our yard. My sister took Sophia for her girls. Tiny little black kitty.
My DH has allergys so the boys are in the garage. No they are not ignored. I go out and spend time with them and every time I come in or out. We walk thru the garage.
Nice glads. was a good find.
She has green eyes.
Well, I am not totally MIA, just scarce today. Went to the pharmacy, a clothing store who has having a clearance sale, grocery for some forgotten potatoes last night, Walmart and Lowes. It was a power trip, so not much looking going on. I wish I could have a trip where no one wanted to go with me, then I could look to my heart's content. Anyway, did a bit of weeding when I got home, and then cleaned the refrigerator, and the computer tower, helped DH wash both cars, and now am starting something for supper. It will be fresh veggies again, with a piece of country ham fried to go along with it.
We have severe thunderstorm watches out until 9:00 pm, so although we need the rain, I don't like the storm part.
Well, I will check back after the evening meal, if the weather is not too severe. BTW, have we had a discussion of what we call our meals? Here it is breakfast, lunch and supper. When we were on the farm the noon meal was called dinner, because often it was the largest meal of the day. Tell me what you call your meals.
defoecat we're a breakfast-lunch and dinner bunch!
Darius I always wanted a cat colored like that or an orange one. Ended up with 2 tabies. 1 short haired and 1 long haired. Maybe next time even though the boys are only going to be 4.
Awww, Darius, it looks like Gracie is very glad to have a people again. Can you tell if she ever had kittens, or is spayed?
Welcome back, Carat, we missed you. I'm praying that your husband's back can be made comfortable and functional again.
It's gonna be a hot one today. I will do more weeding for short periods of time and try not to get as much sun as I did yesterday. My bug bites itch and are swollen, darn, I wish I wasn't so sensitive to bugs. It was probably the ants I got into, but of course there are spiders, earwigs and other crawlies.
Our new shades look nice, just the effect we wanted. Now of course the furniture looks tacky, well gee, that's because it is old and tacky. Fritz (Jack Russell Terrier) has the old swivel rocker near the front window for his day bed and launch pad. It has a sheet over it because the upholstry is shot. It is a very comfortable chair but when I looked into the cost to reupholster it OUCH! The hideabed looks better but is also old and well used. I guess I should be looking at some good used furniture, the new stuff would break the budget which is already bent from the new windows and these shades. The furniture liquidators might have some new that is reasonable, maybe a discontinued color or style.
Maria, I was thinking that one thing you need to do for sure is take the ferry boat ride up through the San Juan Islands. And get off at Eastsound on Orcas Island and have lunch at the Rosario resort. It was built by one of the early lumber barons as his private home, and even has a pipe organ which I wasn't able to hear because it needed some work. The original electric plant on the property runs on water power (DC I think) and was still operating when we were there about 20 years ago, although regular (AC) power was added to the building because of increased demand. The street lights were still powered by the water when we were there about 1980. It is a very interesting place and the food was wonderful. Here, take a look. http://rosario.rockresorts.com/
Dmc, your daughter will come home a different person! I think it is wonderful that she was able to go to Nicaragua. Every American kid should spend some time in a 3rd world country to appreciate what we have here. On another subject, I was thinking that my Patch horse would make a good cart puller. I still have the harness and the cart, unused for about 5 years since my original harness broke horse died.
Dry flower beds and weeds are calling. ~~ see you later, maybe when the ice cream calls my name.
darius-what a sweetheart
defoecat-we do breakfast, lunch and dinner. We missed our predicted thunderstorms, and it's dry here now...the gardens need a drink.
Mary-I would love new roman shades! I think it was Ann who had a nifty design at the Food Cupboard that I wanted to copy. Too lazy so far. Slipcovering a swivel rocker is easy-I just pinned fabric inside out, to the shape, cut off the excess, and sewed it up. Of course, that's presuming you have time to do anything else at all. I have also seen cool looking shutters made of fabric covered insulation board for glass doors. We have glass doors here and I should get some nice insulated covers for the cold nights.
I agree about third world countries. Emily is on her second trip to Nicaragua. She felt bad that some people are critical that she's "not helping people here". Of course we do that too, but I cannot fathom the poverty and misery that the people they serve, live in. She earned the airfare. 100 percent of their donations go directly to the people, and they sponsor a school and orphanage. I try to remember them when I'm sick of heat, humidity and mosquitoes.
have you tried Patch in harness? My horses really took to it. I guess some don't.
Georgeous cat Darius..Is she gonna be a Mama? Looks a little like it..If the litter box is outside she probably wouldn't use it..preferring the natural outdoors, lol..She is a beauty tho.. Slate grays are my favorite..
Larkie
Ice cream time, that didn't take long now did it?
No, I haven't tried Patch with the harness. I thought I should take him in the corral and put the harness bridle and lines on him and just ground drive him for a while to get him used to that. The trainer who started him didn't ground drive. The corral can be enlarged from 2 small ones to one larger since the panels are pipes and we have a fairly level spot. Something else to add to my gotta do it list. There is a trainer who lives across the valley who would be glad to help me (for $ of course) who has had driving horses for years. She used to run a trolley (wagon) to take tourists around town, but sold that to have more time for a horse training business, and now uses a team in the winter to feed elk and take tourists to see them up close. The elk are a problem in the winter because they tear down fences to get in with the cattle to eat alfalfa hay, so they have their own area where they can go every day and eat their fill, then they go off into the woods to act like normal elk. It isn't as much to keep them from being hungry as to keep them from being distructive and probably shot by somebody who isn't happy about a torn down fence and cattle running all over.
Next trip outside I need to use the weedeater. But first the ice cream should be soft enough now to get it out of the container and into a bowl. The freezer on the referigerator freezes it harder than the chest freezer. Oops, just remembered I need to call my neighbor.
Hello all.. Sheila the lily is so lovely really nice colors..
Dmcdevitt.. your daughter is doing a wonderful service..
My favorite pie is cherry, blueberry, rhubarb, lemon, banana, coconut -cremes..
Everyone have great week end.. blessings..
Twyla
Well, we had some rain from the severe thunderstorm warning. Haven't gone out to look how much, but the thunder and lightening were horrible.
Got caught up on my magazines tonight. I put them in a pile, and when time permits give them a look see. In the summer time, sometimes I go weeks without attacking that stack.
Darius, I meant to comment on Gracie, she is a fine looking cat. I think you need to move the litter box to an inside room, maybe a laundry room. You can tell if she has never been an inside cat from her reaction to the enclosed environment. She may decide to have the best of both worlds. My inside/outside cat resides inside most of the day, and then wants out for the evening.
This has been a day that I have not accomplished much, but have rested some, so maybe will be ready to face a really hard gardening week next week. I will probably be doing some canning and freezing too. The lima beans will probably be ready to freeze.
Well, gonna check out some other forums, and will be back shortly to start the new daily.
Just popping in to say goodnight (to Gracie and to everyone else as well)
Twyla, I hope you're feeling better today. Is your knee any better, or still extra sore from the doctor visit?
I've been keeping up with all of you during the day, but I don't close the store until 8 PM on Fridays and we had a last minute customer tonight so didn't get out til even later. Had to broil some kebabs tonight as the weather didn't cooperate for the planned grilling last night and we didn't eat until very late.
Did anyone else have trouble with DG tonight? I tried to get to this thread several times, but it was exceedingly slow and I got bounced out once or twice.
darius, Gracie is a cutie. I also wondered; however, if she might be about to gift you with a few kittens. That would explain her hearty appetite too!
We're back in the "sauna" again, unfortunately. With July this hot, I dread to see what August has in store for us. At least we were lucky again so far as the thunderstorms went. We got a very heavy, but brief, downpour, but the lightning was far enough away not to present any threat. Pheeeww! I know some people love to watch the storms, but I've always been a chicken when it comes to lightning.
It's getting late and tomorrow's just another work day for me, so I'm afraid that I don't have time to go back and forth and try to respond to everyone's post. I'll just wish you all a peaceful night and see you tomorrow.
Tomorrow's daily is up, follow me over here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/629209/
Sorry, another OOPS! follow me with this thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/629209/
